Adversarial Design: Pushing Back on the Internet of Things, April 5-7, CITP, Princeton
by Seda Guerses 03 Feb '17

03 Feb '17

Dear all, Please find below the call for participation for an interdisciplinary design workshop we are organizing at Princeton in April. Can I kindly ask you to distribute this in your circles? For those who would like to attend and are affected by the US travel ban (current and previous), there is an opportunity to join a small local rendering of the workshop towards the end of February in Brussels. This is not a sufficient response to travel bans and their destructive consequences, but reflects our insistence to come and work together. Thank you. s. ****************************************************************************************************************************** Adversarial Design: Pushing Back on the Internet of Things Call for Team Applications Dates: April 5-7, 2017 Location: Princeton University ****************************************************************************************************************************** Princeton University’s Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) in collaboration with the Center for Digital Humanities is hosting a workshop that explores the security and privacy concerns that arise from Internet-connected devices in smart homes and cities. We solicit teams of computer scientists, engineers, designers, artists, legal scholars, and social theorists to come together and design systems that can provide users with more visibility into and control over the behavior of the devices that they connect to their networks, ultimately giving people more agency over these devices. Existing efforts to improve IoT privacy and security have begun to explore ways to visualize and control data flows from these devices, but many of these designs could be informed by insights from architects, designers, and sociologists as well as critical theories of design. The workshop plans to bring people together from these diverse knowledge bases to enrich and enhance existing approaches to security and privacy in smart homes and cities. The designs developed at the workshop may have different goals. For example, in a smart home with multiple inhabitants, participants may develop designs that improve security or privacy in ways that incorporate a variety of living arrangements and user interests. Another design goal might be to allow communities to seamlessly communicate with manufacturers about privacy and security issues that they discover. We are inviting teams of 3-5 people to come to Princeton University for the workshop. Each team will provide an analysis of a security or privacy concern related to smart homes or cities and develop an intervention to address that concern. Teams may choose a device (or devices) to work with ahead of time, or make use of a set of devices that will be made available at the workshop. To facilitate prototyping and design, we will provide a Raspberry Pi-based system that inspects traffic on a network and provides users with rudimentary capabilities for visualizing and controlling traffic flows on that network. All teams will be asked to document their activities after the workshop in a short report. Teams may wish to use the workshop as a starting point to participate in the FTC’s “IoT Home Inspector Challenge.” Potential teams should submit an application that includes: - a short statement of interest describing questions and methods you plan to bring to the workshop, as well as a brief description of a possible intervention you would design. - a list of team members (3-5 per team), including short biographies of each member. We encourage teams whose members span a broad range of backgrounds, possibly spanning fields including computer science, design, urban studies, arts, and architecture. Costs and Travel Support: There is no registration fee for the workshop. We have limited funds to support three external teams with a budget of up to $1,000, and a total budget of $3,000 to offer honorarium to independent artists and designers that participate in the workshop. If you are in need of funding for participation, we kindly ask you to indicate this in your application with a short justification. Important Dates: Applications due: February 24, 2017 Decisions on applications: March 3, 2017 More About The Workshop: Applications for team participants for the three-day event can be submitted https://citp.princeton.edu/call-iot/ <https://citp.princeton.edu/call-iot/> A separate event webpage will be availabe soon for people who would like to attend the public portion of the workshop on Friday, April 7, 2017. This portion will be held in the Friend Center Convocation Room on the Princeton University campus. A link will be provided for attendees (not participants) to RSVP at a later date. This workshop is part of the CITP Project Agonistic Algorithms put together by Carl DiSalvo (Georgia Tech), Nick Feamster (Princeton University), Seda Gurses (Princeton University, Leuven), and Janet Vertesi (Princeton University) and is produced in collaboration with the Center for Digital Humanities. The workshop is part of an ongoing effort to explore how theories of agonistic pluralism—which champions a diversity of perspectives, affect, and contestation as foundational to democratic politics—might be brought to bear on computational media and systems design. Adversarial design refers to such practice and, in the context of this workshop, its combination with adversarial modeling in computer science privacy and security research. Fwd: [COMPOS] PETIÇÃO INTERNACIONAL DE APOIO À UERJ EM 5 IDIOMAS
by Marco Schneider 01 Feb '17

01 Feb '17

INTERNATIONAL PETITION TO SUPPORT THE UNIVERSIDADE DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO. SIGN AND SHARE! Send your name ans institution to save.uerj(a)gmail.com. The Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), founded in 1950, is one of the most important public academic institutions for higher education and research in Brasil. The current bankruptcy of the State of Rio de Janeiro is now threatening the university with closure. In 2016 the UERJ obtained less than two thirds of its usual budget, and is now unable to pay staff wages and student grants or to ensure minimal maintenance on campus. The start of the next term has been postponed indefinitely. We the undersigned, academics and researchers from all over the world, wish to express our deepest concern for the future of the UERJ, show solidarity for all the students and staff and draw the attention of Brazilian authorities to the scientific, social and cultural disaster that would result from the destruction or weakening of the UERJ. __._,_.___ ------------------------------ Posted by: "Denilson Lopes" <noslined(a)bighost.com.br> ------------------------------ Reply via web post <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/COMPOS/conversations/messages/25917;_yl…> • Reply to sender <noslined@bighost.com.br?subject=Re%3A%20PETI%C7%C3O%20INTERNACIONAL%20DE%20APOIO%20%C0%20UERJ%20EM%205%20IDIOMAS> • Reply to group <COMPOS@yahoogroups.com?subject=Re%3A%20PETI%C7%C3O%20INTERNACIONAL%20DE%20APOIO%20%C0%20UERJ%20EM%205%20IDIOMAS> • Start a New Topic <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/COMPOS/conversations/newtopic;_ylc=X3oD…> • Messages in this topic <https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/COMPOS/conversations/topics/25917;_ylc=…> (1) ------------------------------ Have you tried the highest rated email app? <https://yho.com/1wwmgg> With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. FYI: HR 482 and SB 103 - attack on geospatial information, antiracism work, and affordable housing
by Jack Jen Gieseking 01 Feb '17

01 Feb '17

Dear AoIR colleagues, Colleagues and I just posted this collaboratively written email to various geography lists. Please help us get the word out and encourage AoIR, @theAAG (American Association of Geographers), and other disciplinary groups (AAA, ASA, ASA, MLA, AHA, et al) to take action. With you, Jack ** Dear Geographers, We are writing to bring your attention to the US HR 482 and SB 103, which are an attack on the collection, storage, and distribution of geospatial information, antiracism work, and affordable housing (see below). The text of the bill <https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/482/text?r=117>, “Local Zoning Decisions Protection Act of 2017,” will nullify HUD's 2015 “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” report to "have no force or effect," and does so by eliminating the data to support social change. In other words, the bill stands at odds with the pursuit of knowledge about human geography, including census data. The bill would prohibit a significant amount of the work we do on race, racism, and fair housing in the US, as well as GIS research more broadly, all of which thwart work towards social justice. A key section reads as follows: SEC. 3. PROHIBITION ON USE OF FEDERAL FUNDS. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be used to design, build, maintain, utilize, or provide access to a Federal database of geospatial information on community racial disparities or disparities in access to affordable housing. We encourage feedback, wisdom, and action among our respective lists, AAG specialty groups, other collectives and collegial relationships, and the AAG leadership. We ask you to share word about this bill with colleagues in other disciplines and on social media, using the hashtags #datarefuge and #datarescue when doing so to connect this issue to larger issues of public data and public data collection erasure, obfuscation, and elimination. We also encourage US citizens to reach out to your congressional representatives or to organize from afar in solidarity to stop this bill. Full links to the Senate and House bills are below. Thanks to Euan Hague for bringing this to the CRIT-GEOG list's attention, and for Reed Underwood's response.
