07 Feb '17

*Call for Papers* *Special Issue of New Media & Society:* *Media, Identity, and Online Communities in a Changing Arab World**[1]* Co-edited by Aziz Douai, Eid Mohamed, and Adel Iskandar *Objective and Significance* This special issue will examine the role of new media in the construction of online communities in the Arab world. It is important to understand how user-generated content empowers these new publics and the novel communities established by user comments on social media and news websites. Specifically, there is a need to research these online communities and their perceptions of the role of user-generated content to contribute to politics, and potentially engage other citizens in the public debate. For these reasons, this special issue seeks to answer the following questions: What characterizes these online users’ communities? What are their motivations? How do they perceive the role of news websites’ commenting functions in promoting political engagement? The editors welcome contributions that are theoretically informed and empirically rigorous, employing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. *Proposed Topics:* Articles could develop a subject in connection to any of the following suggested themes: - Theorization of the Online Arab Public Sphere - User-generated Content and Participatory Cultures - New Media and Social Movement Theory in the Context of the Arab Uprisings - Arab Spring and the Mobilizing Potential of New Media - Media Convergence and Citizen Journalism after the “Arab Spring” - The Political-Cultural Division in the Public Sphere - Network Cultural Production in the Digital age - Digital Divide and Participation in the Public Sphere - New Media and the Construction of New Arab Identities - Regulation Policies and Standardization Processes, and Their Impact on Institutional and Individual Uses of Technology Please note that these themes are suggestions only and the guest editors welcome inquiries on a wide variety of theoretical contributions in the fields of new media and the public sphere, presentation of ongoing research and empirical studies along with any of the abovementioned themes. *Submission:* Proposals should include the author's name and affiliation, title, an abstract of 250-300 words, and 3 to 5 keywords, and should be sent to the e-mail address tiproject(a)dohainstitute.edu.qa no later than March 25th 2017. Selected submissions will be due 30 September 2017 and will be submitted directly to the submission site for *New Media and Society*: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nms where they will undergo peer review following the usual procedures of *New Media & Society*. Note therefore that invitation to submit a full article does not therefore guarantee acceptance into the special issue. The special issue will be published in early 2018. *Tentative Timeline:* - Abstract Submission Deadline: *March 25, 2016* - Proposal Selection Notification: *April 15, 2017* - Initial Article Submission Deadline: *September 30, 2017* *[1]* This special issue is part of a larger research project led by Dr. Eid Mohamed and funded by Qatar National Research Fund, NPRP program titled “Transcultural Identities: Solidaristic Action and Contemporary Arab Social Movements.”

CFP: DiGRA 2017 Workshop: “Gaming the Systems: Towards a More Inclusive DiGRA"
by Adrienne Shaw 07 Feb '17

07 Feb '17

Please share widely *DiGRA 2017 Workshop: “Gaming the Systems: Towards a More Inclusive DiGRA”* What would it mean for Game Studies to be diverse, and what role can DiGRA play in achieving this? Does the term ‘diversity’ deserve critical scrutiny in its own right? In light of corporate initiatives such as Intel’s recent and highly substantial investment in creating an inclusive workforce, ‘diversity’ can legitimately claim to be one of the most impactful terms that has ever been developed in league with humanities and social sciences thinking. On the other hand, diversity can be seen as a code word for the most comfortable way in which difference appears to contemporary power structures - and hence subject to academic critique. Intel’s recent and widely publicized investment in making their own workforce more inclusive and diverse[i], as well as increasing diversity in games and the tech industry broadly, demonstrates that conversations about representation are finally making headway in corporate sectors. At the same time, we might question if these business-minded approaches to diversity are really invested in the more critical types of change diversity is discussed in relation to in academic conversations. Moreover, as the industries we are interested in begin to take seriously questions of their own diversity, we too must take stock of who is represented in the wide field that is game studies. What can we do to make our field more inclusive and represent a wider array of perspectives? Might it even be possible that we could use such efforts in turn to offer a model for the industries we study as they launch efforts to increase diversity? As scholars, perhaps the response to this situation is quite predictable: more research is needed. This DiGRA workshop will pose the question of what a diverse game studies would look like in both theoretical and practical registers: partly by gathering theoretical papers and partly by providing a venue for voicing and testing ideas that can be represented as precedents to DiGRA and other game studies conferences. The workshop will balance the question of what other fields have done to encourage diversity with the question of what scholars of play can bring to thinking about what academic diversity means in the first place. This will be a half day workshop on *July 2, 2017, *organized as follows: *Format and Activities* 12:00-12:30 Opening and Introductions 12:30-13:00 Designing Diversity Guidelines 13:00-15:00 Paper presentation – six papers, 15 minutes each and 5 minutes of question time. 15:00-15:30 Break and Play Time 15:30-17:00 Co-facilitated Discussion *Location* PAR-Arts West North Wing-256 (Collaborative Learning Room) The University of Melbourne Parkville 3000. *Call for Proposals* We welcome proposals for papers that investigate questions such as, but not limited to: · What have conferences, fields of study and the game industry done to encourage diverse participation? Can and should DiGRA take a proactive role in fostering game studies diversity? · To what degree is diversity a useful concept? What political work does it do and can it do in our field? How does it link with concepts of representation, attention and competition, and to what level are such concepts already part of the logic of the academy? · What potentials do academics interested in play bring to broadening or questioning the idea of diversity? · How diverse is the history of game studies as both theory and pedagogy and to whom does this matter? · What is the relation of academic game studies to videogame business and industry across various regional and national contexts, and to what degree does this affect diversity? · Middleware is often cited as increasing access to game development, but how diverse are the resources, assets and legal structures of such tools? What role does the academy play in this area and how could it be expanded? · Who is best positioned to speak on regional issues including funding and representation, and what power dynamics are at play in the centrality of the Anglophone academy to DiGRA? · Is DiGRA creating a safe space for diverse voices, and what are best practices models for how DiGRA should do this internally, and pressure platforms externally? What are the practical issues and how can they be met? Please send your extended abstract (1500-3000 words) to *Sian Beavers *( digradiversityworkshop(a)gmail.com) by *March 6, 2017* at 17:00 CET (9:00 PST). Please note this is an open paper format and you are *not *required to use the DiGRA template for extended abstracts. Accepted papers will be included in a Diversity Special Issue of ToDiGRA, published in 2018, where full papers will be subject to an additional round of peer-review prior to publication. Notifications of acceptance will be sent to participants on April 3, 2017. Full papers (8000 words including references) are due September 15, 2017 for peer review. CfP: Social Media & Business Practices in Emerging Markets
by P. VIGNESWARA ILAVARASAN 07 Feb '17

07 Feb '17

Special Issue: Social Media & Business Practices in Emerging Markets ------------------------------ Special issue call for papers from Journal of Advances in Management Research *“Social Media & Business Practices in the Emerging Markets” Journal of Advances in Management Research Special Issue* Journal of Advances in Management Research of Emerald Group Publishing invites high quality manuscripts for a special issue entitled 'Social Media & Business Practices in Emerging Markets’. Businesses use social media platforms in all the possible domains – marketing, customer relationship management, recruitment, brand management, market research and new product development etc. The extant management research is predominantly focusing on the developed markets, apart from abundant research on political activism or governance in the developing world. Out of the management research, digital marketing, with a special focus on social media platforms, are relatively numerous than other areas. There is a need for going beyond marketing and the developed world. The emerging and developing markets offer different challenges while deploying social media for various business functions. The ownership and usage of social media platforms in these markets differ significantly than the developed ones. Though the reasons are known - differential penetration rates, content availability, cost of broadband access, affordability of devices, weaker network externalities and regulatory frameworks, state-of-the art of social media strategies in the developing world is still emerging. The knowledge in this domain also seems to be sparse. Businesses, both local and multinationals, compete with each other in winning the emerging markets. The proven frameworks and social media strategies are from the developed markets of better wired consumers. They need to be customized or adapted, and subsequently disseminated. The proposed special issue is an attempt in this direction. The special issue invites high quality manuscripts that are grounded in empirical data and should be focused on the developing and emerging markets. The analysis of the data can be from traditional research methods and from social media analytics. Following are the possible questions (not exhaustive): How do firms in low-networked markets select and use specific social media platforms?; Is there a distinct social media strategy among the developing market firms?; Whether firms exploit the selected features of social media platforms? Whether firms differentiate between home grown and global social media platforms?; Is there a different device strategy adapted by the firms?; Whether CEOs in emerging markets think differently of social media platforms? Why?; What are the implications of introducing social media functions on the organizational structure?; Whether social media platforms are exploited in functions beyond marketing?; What is the impact of regulatory environment on the businesses’ use of social media?; How are firms handling social media skill deficiencies?; How are social media activities measured, and investments are evaluated?; What kind of insights and opportunities do social media data provide? What are the challenges of managing social media data? *Important Dates:* Call for notifications - 1 Dec 2016; Submission Deadline - 1 April 2017; Decision on submission - 1 June 2017; Revised Paper Submission – 1 Aug 2017. *Guidelines on Submission:* The papers submitted for this special issue shall be filtered by a Guest Editors first before sending for blind review by the experts. Please visit the Journal of Advances in Management Research author guidelines pages to find out more about the manuscript requirements. (Reminder) ICA2017 preconference: Digital Inequalities and Discrimination in the Big Data Era (Abstracts Feb. 10)
by Jenifer Sunrise Winter 06 Feb '17

06 Feb '17

Thank you to those who have submitted thus far. Just a quick reminder that the deadline for abstract submissions to our ICA preconference on Digital Inequalities and Discrimination in the Big Data Era is this Friday, Feb. 10. -Jenifer *DIGITAL INEQUALITIES AND DISCRIMINATION IN THE BIG DATA ERA* *Preconference of the International Communication Association '17* May 25, 2017, San Diego Hilton Bayfront, San Diego, California (USA) Co-sponsored by the Pacific ICTD Collaborative, the School of Communications (University of Hawaii at Manoa), and the Institute for Information Policy (Penn State University) *Abstracts due: February 10, 2017 * *CALL FOR PAPERS* A growing number of ordinary objects are being redesigned to include digital sensors, computing power, and communication capabilities – and new objects, and processes, are becoming part of the Internet. This emerging Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem – networks of physical objects embedded with the ability to sense, and sometimes act upon, their environment, as well as related communication, applications, and data analysis, enables data to be collected from billions of everyday objects. The emerging datasphere made possible by these developments offers immense potential to serve the public good by fostering government transparency, energy conservation, participatory governance, and substantial advances in medical research and care. On the other hand, a growing body of research addresses emerging privacy and civil liberties concerns related to big data, including unjust discrimination and unequal access to data and the tools needed to make use of it. For example, big data analytics may reveal patterns that were previously not detectable. Data about a variety of daily tasks that seem trivial is increasingly being federated and used to reveal associations or behaviors, and these analyses and the decisions made based on them pose potential harms to individuals or groups. Many transactions that seemed innocuous can now be used to discriminate – one’s movement throughout the day, items purchased at the store, television programs watched, “friends” added or looked at on social networks, or individuals communicated with or who were in close proximity to the subject at various times, can all be used to make judgements that affect an individual and his or her life chances. With the advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning, we are increasingly moving to a world where many decisions around us are shaped by these calculations rather than traditional human judgement. For example, sensitive personal information or behaviors (e.g., political or health-related) may be used to discriminate when individuals seek housing, immigration eligibility, medical care, education, bank loans or other financial services, insurance, or employment. At the same time, individuals, groups, or regions may also be disadvantaged due to a lack of access to data (or related skills and tools) to make use of big data in ways that benefit their lives and communities. This preconference session seeks to advance understanding of digital inequalities and discrimination related to big data and big data analytics. *Papers between 5,000-8,000 words and position papers between 1,000-2,000 words are welcomed.* *TOPICS OF INTEREST* We welcome scholarly and applied research on, but not limited to, the following: • Social, economic, and ethical implications of big data analytics in a variety of contexts (e.g., access to housing, immigration, medical care, education, bank loans or other financial services, insurance, or employment). • Perspectives on big data from scholars from emerging economies or traditionally marginalized groups. • Predictive analytics, algorithmic discrimination, and artificial-intelligence-based decision making. • Digital inequalities, such as unequal access to big data sets, skills, or tools. • Emerging data literacies. • Use of big data to counter social and economic inequality (e.g., promoting civil rights and social justice). • Disclosure of algorithms, algorithmic transparency, and the public good. • Big data, security and encryption (potential for hacking, theft, third-party abuse). • Government and corporate surveillance. • Big data brokers and sale of personal data (is privacy a commodity or a right?) • International norms and standards for big data. • Policy/legal analysis related to big data and the preconference theme (e.g., standards of liability for injury and defective work products (algorithms/burden of proof), the challenge of Notice and Consent, liability for bad or false or slanted or insufficient data collection, government regimes for supervision of big data policies). • Consumer bill of rights for big data. • Big data and anonymity, re-identification of anonymous data. • Big data vs. privacy as an essential condition for safeguarding free speech, intellectual property (i.e., how IP laws impact big data), or Constitutional rights of freedom of assembly and association. Papers may include empirical research as well as policy analyses, new methodological approaches, or position papers addressing the preconference theme. Submissions by graduate students working in this area are welcomed. *The costs of the workshop are heavily subsidized by the participating Institutes, to keep fees for participants at a nominal level.* *IMPORTANT DATES* *Abstracts due*: February 10, 2017 *Notifications to submitters*: February 27, 2017 *Full papers due*: May 12, 2017 *SUBMISSION GUIDELINES* Abstracts of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be emailed to pictdc(a)hawaii.edu by February 10, 2017. Please include “Digital Inequalities ICA 2017” in the subject line. Full papers accepted for presentation at the preconference will, with the consent of the authors, be submitted to the Journal of Information Policy ( http://www.psupress.org/Journals/jnls_JIP.html/) for consideration for a Special Issue curated by guest editors from the field. The papers will be blind peer-reviewed, to assure their academic value to both authors (for academic credit) and readers. ---- Regards, Jenifer Jenifer Sunrise Winter, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Graduate Chair, School of Communications Co-director, Pacific ICTD Collaborative University of Hawaii at Manoa 2550 Campus Road, Crawford Hall 325, Honolulu, HI 96822 ph: 808.956.3784

Pre-doctoral position at the University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), "Learning Analytics for Computational Thinking Assessment"
by Pablo Garaizar Sagarminaga 06 Feb '17

06 Feb '17

Dear all, Find below the information about a three year pre-doctoral position we offer at the University of Deusto. We would be very pleased if you could disseminate it among your contacts and possible candidates. Best wishes, Pablo ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Supported and co-funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND Programme, the University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain) provides a three-year position for qualified international Early Stage Researchers for high quality PhD training. The thesis proposal "Learning Analytics for Computational Thinking assessment" aims to apply Learning Analytics techniques for Computational Thinking assessment. This topic is challenging and plausible at the same time. Challenging, because most computer-related problems have more than a single solution and novice programmers tend to address problems in imaginative -and often overcomplicated- ways. Plausible, because the solutions that need to be analysed are defined in formal languages and the possibilities are often bounded. Deadline for applications: 7 March 2017 More information about the thesis proposal: http://www.deusto.es/cs/Satellite/deusto/en/education_garaizar_2017/documen… How to apply: http://www.deusto.es/cs/Satellite/deusto/en/phd-1/dirscofund/about-dirscofu… ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Pablo Garaizar Sagarminaga Universidad de Deusto Avda. de las Universidades 24 48007 Bilbao - Spain Phone: +34-94-4139000 Ext 2512 Fax: +34-94-4139101
