The PhD studentship will be linked with the EPSRC ‘Cyber Security Across the Life Span’ (cSALSA) project, under the supervision of Professor Adam Joinson. PhD Studentships worth approximately £19,500 pa for 3 years (to cover home/EU tuition fees, maintenance and training support grant), are open to International, EU and UK candidates who have both (i) exceptional academic qualifications and (ii) a strong commitment to acquiring a professional research training to become academics. It understands Big Data not solely in terms of large-scale datasets of textual or digital data that require us to tune our research practices. More radically, it starts from a conceptualization of Big Data as a complex set of cultural, political and scientific knowledge practices that challenge the traditional modes in which research questions are posed and framed, analyses are performed, as well as the ways in which results are communicated to the public and thus affect public discourse and debates. Consistently, the section comprises a set of panels that aim to investigate two interrelated aspects. On the one hand, panels will engage with how Big Data are leveraging our understanding of political dynamics within complex societies. In this respect, the section will consider applications of Big Data in connection to public opinion and institutional politics (party dynamics, political communications, etc.) as well as in relation to the study of contemporary forms of collective action and unconventional political participation (social movements, digital activism and the like). On the other, panels will develop a specific take on Big Data, considering how they become a contested research and political terrain, and thus inviting critical reflections on methodological and epistemological implications but also on the power dynamics that entwine with the increased datification of our societies. In this sense, this Section offers a unique occasion to foster the convergence of scholars and researchers currently working on the value of Big Data for studying politics but also on the politics of Big Data themselves. With this aim in mind, the panels in this Section will welcome papers employing different theoretical, empirical and methodological approaches on Big Data, with a single-case or a comparative multinational and/or multiplatform perspective. More specifically, the Section will welcome papers on the following topics. *Big data, public opinion and institutional politics* Digital social behaviors and, particularly, social media communications and interactions are increasingly considered a fundamental component of electoral campaigns, governmental and legislative dynamics as well as of the relationships and the interactions between party members and political leaders with their constituencies. Thus, it is in the online public discourse unravelling on social media platforms that politicians and policy-makers lean to an increasing extent to have the pulse of ongoing and ever evolving political trends and public opinions. This panel invites papers that apply Big Data to the study of contemporary political institutional and/or public opinion dynamics with national or comparative perspectives thus providing a space to inquiry about how this type of data and related methodological and analytical practices can leverage our understanding of traditional political science topics. *Big data and unconventional political participations* The rapid diffusion and increased use of social media platforms in grassroots politics has relevant consequences for the organization of social movements and their forms of protest. While more traditional forms of collective actions still exist, grassroots politics often follows a logic of connective action according to which collective actors are less central than in the past for the success of mobilizations. Moreover, activists lean increasingly on web-based platforms and internet services that produce Big Data flows worldwide. This panel invites papers that investigate to what extent Big Data are changing the way in which activists organize and protest with national or comparative perspectives thus providing a space to inquiry about how this type of data and related methodological and analytical practices can leverage our understanding of grassroots political participation today. *A paradigm shift for political science? Discussing Big Data epistemology and its implication for political studies* Recent events, such as the last USA Presidential elections, have clearly shown the potentials and, perhaps, even to a larger extent, the criticalities of predictive analytical practices in the study of political dynamics. The time seems more than ripe to begin re-addressing the methodological practices that underpin our understanding of sociopolitical dynamics – in particular in relation to our extensive use of large-scale digital and textual datasets which are deemed to be “representative” of citizens’ political preferences, desires, and priorities. Consistently, this panel invites papers that address, theoretically or empirically, the potentialities and the criticalities of Big Data as a new epistemological practice for producing valid and socially relevant scientific knowledge in the field of political science. *Big data as a political terrain: deconstructing and approaching critically datification* Big Data are not a neutral field of practice and knowledge, in particular when it comes to politics. Political actors, economic actors and media actors understand in different ways the concept of big data. More precisely, when political parties and social movements engage with Big Data, they often evoke specific, and contrasting, understanding of what datification processes means in and for politics. Wednesday's event is the first time we've done a live inter-city meetup. Should be interesting! We still have plenty of seats available at the NYC node, so please join us. GrubHub is across the street from Bryant Park and, as you might imagine, there will be food and drink! *RSVP* A little background on the event. The idea for this came in the run up to last years *USA-IGF* <https://www.igf-usa.org/>. We already had a session on free speech issues thus it got bumped. What it really was about how what we see on the Internet is shaped, the public interest in that, and the role of governance. Since then we've been overtaken by events - not just fake news, but a general awareness of the bubble effect. The are many facets to this, and it looks like it will merit a series. Secondly, the format. We all know how remote participants are second-class participants in meetups.. CALL FOR PAPERS (apologies for multiple copies) *3rd IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things for Active and Assisted Living (IoTAAL)* In conjunction with IEEE Global IoT Summit 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - 6-9 June 2017. http://www.tlc.dii.univpm.it/iotaalms/iotaal2017/ *MOTIVATION AND SCOPE* Increased life expectancy and decreased birth rates are challenging developed countries worldwide, with a rapidly growing elderly population, and a declining workforce. These two contextual phenomena are generating new needs, as ageing increases the probability of developing physical and cognitive impairments, requiring new and more effective ways to provide support and care. According to the United Nations, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 60, will make up 37% of the European population by 2050, from 20% in 2000: this will put a dramatic pressure on public welfare systems, and new ways of assistance and care delivery have to be designed. The Internet of Things may provide significant enhancement to the quality of life for the elderly and, in general, people in need, bringing new algorithms, architectures and platforms into Active and Assisted Living (AAL), to develop new and innovative approaches. A peculiar aspect of IoT relies in enabling the collection of massive amounts of data, generated from physical and virtual sensors, things, smart objects and users. As such, IoT is totally functional to AAL, with the pervasive collection of environmental and personal data related to the monitored subject, and their processing, aimed at generating information to be used in different types of applications, from behavioral analysis, to gesture and action recognition, to fall prevention and detection, to human-machine interaction, just to mention a few. *TOPICS OF INTEREST* This workshop aims at investigating the close relationship between IoT and AAL, in a data-oriented perspective, and at different layers: from the technologies enabling sensor data collection, to the communication architectures needed to support data transfer, to the reasoning techniques applied to data, in order to generate the information upon which AAL services and functionalities are built. This is a non-tenure-track, full-time position, renewable annually based on performance. Candidates must possess a MA, MFA or Ph.D. in a related field at the time of application. This position would reside within the Communication Training Center (CTC) of the College of Media & Communication, and the successful candidate will offer regular workshops for doctoral students and faculty for improving graphic design, data visualizations, videos, photos, etc. in grant proposals and major publication manuscripts. This position would also offer consulting services for select major proposals and publication manuscripts as designated by the Vice President for Research. The successful candidate will also teach two courses per long academic semester, with additional opportunities for summer teaching, within the College of Media & Communication. She or he will have a proven track record of professional accomplishment and substantial teaching experience in graphic design and at least one of the following areas: photography, videography, digital media post-production, interactive media, and/or web design. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. The German AI Society Travel Grant The German AI society (AI chapter of the Gesellschaft für Informatik) is kindly offering support for German students or students working in Germany to attend the IUI Conference. This support is provided in the form of three small stipends (500 EUR each) to partially cover the registration fee and the costs of travel and living expenses while attending the conference. The students will be reimbursed for their expenses after the conference. After the conference, students write a short report (1 page) for the national AI magazine. Students must be member of the German AI society before submitting the reimbursement forms. The NSF Travelling Grant (Only for US students) We are happy to announce that student participation support provided by NSF to attend the IUI Conference will be provided (limited to US students). This support is in the form of a small stipend to cover the registration fee and partially cover the costs of travel and living expenses while attending the conference. Today, developments such as let's plays, eSports, and streaming have made spectating play an important mode of engaging with digital games. Historically, sporting arenas have brought together not only skillful athletes, but huge crowds of spectators. The audience has an effect on the play, from the cheering of the fans of the home team, to rule changes implemented in sports in order to make them more television friendly. The spectator experience places different design considerations on a game than that of the player experience. Spectating Play is the 13th annual spring seminar organized by University of Tampere Game Research Lab. The seminar welcomes any and all scholarly work on the intersection of audiences and game/play. This paradigm could broaden and amplify creative capacity for all, but is today mostly developed and studied in game AI. This one-day workshop at CHI 2017 therefore convenes CHI and game researchers to advance mixed-initiative approaches to creativity support.
