FEB 23 SYMPOSIUM #NotAskingForIt: Rape, Discourse and Media
by Feona Attwood 06 Feb '17

06 Feb '17

#NotAskingForIt: Rape, Discourse and Media Thursday 23rd Feb, 9:30am-6pm Middlesex University Committee Room 1, The Town Hall, The Burroughs, Hendon, NW4 4BT. To reserve your free ticket please click here This one day symposium aims to explore the widespread interest in rape culture, within the academy and within popular media more generally. Much of this popular discussion focuses on the lived experience of rape culture, or the social codes and conventions that support or legitimate violence against women. This event will focus on the cultural construction of rape and sexual violence. It will explore the discursive construction of rape in legal settings, as well as interrogating the intersection between rape culture and the media. This will encompass a broad range of perspectives within feminist media and cultural studies: from the construction of rape in both social and legal contexts; to the representation of fictional violence in contemporary film and television; an interrogation of the journalistic practices in investigating and reporting on such crimes; and the crucial role of social media in the process of spreading rape myths, enacting violence as well as, in some cases, directly challenging gendered violence and dismantling pervasive cultural constructions. Keynote Speakers include: Professor Jessica Ringrose, Dr Kaitlynn Mendes and Dr Nicola Henry. Doing Social Media Analysis with Free Tools A Digital Sociology Study Group Event 28 April 2017, 10:00-13:00 Leeds Beckett University, UK https://www.britsoc.co.uk/events/key-bsa-events/doing-social-media-analysis… Analysing Data from Twitter, Youtube, Facebook and Smartphones Social media are now a central part of many people’s lives. When we send messages, comment, upload photographs and make connections with others we are creating new kinds of networks. This creates vast amounts of data which hide valuable insights. This workshop will introduce a range of free tools which can help you to collect and analyse these data. It will also help you to tackle the even thornier issue of how to interpret these data as a sociologist. We will engage in hands-on workshop activities on data-driven digital methods and their research applications in relation to people’s lives. The aim is to introduce critical engagement with the digital tools as well as the application of these tools to research questions. The workshops will be conceptually grounded in the problems of public communication and privacy, digital media production and consumption, and the ethical issues associated with big/social data and digital methods in the context of digital media environments. Outline of the event Tools to be introduced will enable researchers to collect data from Smartphones; Twitter; Youtube; Facebook as well as visualise and export the data for publication without any programming skills required. Asking questions regarding every decision in these processes is a necessary component of thinking sociologically while archiving, visualising and interpreting the data being collected. We will work through four main themes: - Social Media Data Collection - Social Media Data Analysis - Visualisation and Presentation - Ethics of Mapping Social Media Convened by Dr Steven McDermott <http://www.arts.ac.uk/lcc/people/school-of-media-teaching-staff/dr-steven-m…> who lectures on contemporary developments in media and communications at the University of the Arts London. VIDEO: @HouseCommerce #SubCommTech Hearing – Reauthorization of NTIA
by Joly MacFie 03 Feb '17

03 Feb '17

Touted as a "holistic" overview, this was indeed a wide-ranging hearing. Witnesses were 3 former Administrators, but not *Larry Strickling* <https://www.linkedin.com/in/lawrence-strickling-25162/> - presumably now kicking up his heels at some paradisiacal resort after finally *signing off on ICANN* <https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/correspondence/strickling-to-crocker-…>. Topics included: *Trump infrastructure$$*, it was estimated $20 bil will go to broadband; *Spectrum* - agencies will be scrutinized for spare space; *5G *- shorter wavelengths will require many more pole attachments, rollout is anticipated to begin in 2020, *ICANN *- the giving up of oversight frees up the US to be partisan! e.g. argue that .amazon should go to the US company. Also suggested was that the Administrator should be given a power upgrade from "Assistant Secretary" to "Secretary". The post, and Deputy, are *currently vacant* <https://www.ntia.doc.gov/offices>,. joly posted: "On Thursday January 2 2016, the U.S. House of Representatives Energy & Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology held a hearing - Reauthorization of NTIA - in Washington DC. Established in 1978, the *National Telecommunications and Information Administration <https://www.ntia.doc.gov/>* (NTIA) and its administrator were tasked with serving as the president’s principal advisor on communications policy. The NTIA administrator serves as the coordinator of government spectrum allocations, and voice of the administration at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in Congress. Despite NTIA’s important role on communications and information policy, it has not been reauthorized since 1992. Members discussed NTIA’s role moving forward in the efficient use of federally held spectrum, its role in broadband deployment, and its role in promoting safe, secure communications networks. Details are as follows: Track: Social Technical and Social Inclusion Issues Mini Track Title: Social Theory in Information Systems (STIR ’17) Description This year we are proud to celebrate the 21st consecutive year of the Social Theory in Information Systems Research minitrack. Since 1996, scholars and researchers have presented cutting edge research, using social theory in their work. STIR’17 solicits papers that use social theory in IS research drawing upon such approaches as sociotechnical theory, critical theory, social informatics, and organizational theory. We are interested in highlighting research that critically examines the constitution of ICT, and their roles in organizations and society. We are particularly interested in research that makes use of social theory to address the main theme of the conference, “A Tradition of Innovation,” meaning work that is innovative in terms of multi- and trans-disciplinary uses of social theory and methodologies to study the impacts of new and emerging technologies on people in their organizational and social lives. We are interested in questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and hinder the move towards more useful, productive, and happier lives. Issues might include designing smart and sustainable digital futures, critically examining the constitution of ICTs, and their roles in the design, maintenance and dissolution of online and offline communities, and posing and investigating questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and sometimes hinder progress towards more useful, productive, and happier lives. Please join us in San Diego for this milestone! Suggested Topics In addition to research aligned with the conference theme we are also interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and understand: • The implications of social networks for organizations and social groups • Conceptual and empirical work focusing on the ways ICT can promote or hinder social inclusion • The significance of cyberinfrastructure for commerce, governing and research and sustainable development • The relationships between ICTs and people as they participate in online communities and virtual teams • Online communities of practice, their processes and outcomes • The dynamics of and social and cultural impacts on ICT • Hacktivism and the use of technology to mobilize resources and advance ideology • Unintended consequences of technology implementation and use in organizations and in social life • Scientific collaboration and scholarly communication as enabled and constrained by ICTs • The impacts of social computing on our social and work lives SUBMISSION SITE http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amcis2017 Submissions may be of two types: Completed research papers (< 5000 words, excluding references, tables, and figures) Research-in-progress papers (< 3500 words, excluding references, tables, and figures) All conference submissions will be double-blind, peer reviewed, and must be submitted using the online submission system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/amcis2017 For complete instructions for authors and information about the conference, visit the AMCIS 2017 website at http://amcis2017.aisnet.org IMPORTANT DATES January 9, 2017: Manuscript submissions for AMCIS 2016 begin March 1, 2017: AMCIS manuscript submissions closes for authors at 10:00am PST April 17, 2017: Notification of initial decision CHAIR CONTACT INFORMATION Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu> Howard Rosenbaum, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University hrosenba(a)indiana.edu<mailto:hrosenba@indiana.edu>
