Dear all, during the past couple of months, the impact of social media on elections has been a prominent topic of discussion. 'Fake news' and big-data-based advertising were discussed in particular. The Network of European Cinema and Media Studies (NECS) is holding its annual conference in Paris from June 29 to July 1. The NECS workgroup 'new media' wants to submit a panel by the working title "Social Media and Elections: Practices, Discourses, Impact". If you want to be part of this panel, send your idea for a paper to hillrichs(a)uni-mannheim.de ASAP. We have two participants already. While the panel’s working title is still very general, ideas for papers should be specific of course. As the workgroup’s coordinator, I’ll see if ideas work together and come back to you to ask for the full abstract. The panel has to be submitted by January 31. Best, Rainer P.S. These changes call for novel analytical tools and methodologies for making sense of large amounts of heterogeneous data, for deriving diverse kinds of knowledge, and for linking across different collections and research disciplines. Thus the theme of the 2017 conference is #TOScale #TOAnalyze #TODiscover. Digital libraries must improve outreach efforts, engage diverse communities, and provide scholars and users with effective and flexible access to materials which will in turn empower them to make new observations and discoveries. This year, we particularly invite papers, panels, workshops, and tutorials that present new discovery methods for diverse kinds of collections and datasets (e.g., documents, images, sounds, videos), that apply recent technologies in related fields like machine learning and data mining, and that report on innovative digital library applications that engage diverse communities, facilitate user access, and enable discovery and exploration in all domains including science, art, and the humanities. This year, in addition to the research-oriented program, we are organizing a practitioners’ day so experts and practitioners can share their experiences and report on major projects. Practitioner contributions will take the form of posters and demos. Participation is sought from all parts of the world and from the full range of established and emerging disciplines and professions including computer science, information science, web science, data science, digital humanities, librarianship, data management, archival science and practice, museum studies and practice, information technology, medicine, social sciences, education and the humanities. Representatives from academe, government, industry, and others are invited to participate. TOPICS JCDL welcomes submissions from researchers and practitioners interested in all aspects of digital libraries such as: collection discovery and development, hybrid physical/digital collections; knowledge discovery; applications of machine learning and AI; services; digital preservation; system design; scientific data management; infrastructure and service design; implementation; interface design; human-computer interaction; performance evaluation; user research; crowdsourcing and human computation; intellectual property; privacy; electronic publishing; document genres; multimedia; user communities; and associated theoretical topics. They may also present theories or systems that can be described concisely in the limited space. Short papers must not exceed 4 pages in the conference format. In some cases, these changes have disrupted value chains and market equilibria. In many industries digital players have built new sociotechnical arrangements, including those forms of intermediation sometimes referred to as the platform economy. In the Global South, digital money and financial services offered through digital technologies have been hailed as having the potential to create financial inclusion and grow the economy. More generally, digitization affects the way most ordinary economic activities are designed, undertaken and assessed, from marketing through consumption, including for example tracking and targeting devices, the imperative of data collection, and the rise of collaborative consumption. Empirical studies show that the outcomes of digitization are not technically determined, but depend on local arrangements. On some markets, the internet provides opportunities for challengers, on some others it favors concentration; some digital tools empower consumers, whereas tracking and targeting devices aim at controlling their behavior. Indeed the market form itself is sometimes bypassed in favor of new forms of economic organization. The aim of this mini-conference is to bring together empirical studies on digital markets and the digitization of economic practices. We particularly - though not exclusively - welcome contributions on: 1) Digital goods & services In many creative and knowledge-intensive industries, goods and services have been "digitized". Moreover, new categories of digital items circulate and are traded: digital money, digital artifacts (e.g. in-game objects), digital reputations. How are these digital commodities designed, valuated and traded? How does the machine-based intermediation that underlies digital services compare with human-based intermediaries? 2) Market infrastructure and equipment Digital infrastructures provide new kinds of intermediaries and business models, now gathered behind the concept of 'platform economy' (eBay, Etsy, Amazon, etc.). But they also equip markets with new coordination instruments, such as judgement and evaluation systems based on participation (online consumer reviews), virtual and alternative currencies, bots, algorithms and new forms of calculation. To what extent do these infrastructures lead to new ways of performing markets practices online and offline? 3) Engaging with markets Online market devices have triggered or extended specific forms of market participation and enhanced new forms of consumerism. Digital technologies gave support for consumer empowerment: evaluation of products (price comparison, online reviews), coordination (forums, communities),amateur commercial activities - and digital labor. Symmetrically, firms invest in conversational forms of connection with consumers. How do these ongoing processes shift market boundaries and change the balance of power in the economy? 4) Beyond the market Digital technology also provides a platform for non-market forms of economy. The name selected is The Public” (John Dewey, 1927). There is a tension between how “publics” form spontaneously (for example in response to economic hardship, to create support groups, to protest about particular matters of concern) and how online users with similar consumption, browsing, movement patterns become grouped and acted upon as units of data, whether by organisations, researchers, or others. When people collectively and publicly self-organise to form a group, the identity of participants as well as the collective grouping itself may be apparent to all involved. However, with the rise, across a range of fields of digital and algorithmic technologies that work by segmenting people according to shared sets of interests, objectives, behavioural traits, and/or political persuasions, these processes as well as the identities of participants tends to be invisible to those involved. In the latter, it is only when these acts of ‘assigned’ collectivisation are exposed, perhaps deliberately (e.g. when confronting published research), perhaps unexpectedly (e.g. via data hacks/leaks), or perhaps when group self-recognition is achieved by users (e.g. via transparency apps/tools, social media, activism, freedom of information requests), that those involved begin to recognise their status as a “public”. This conference will investigate the diverse ways in which publics are, and can be, constituted, provoked, threatened, understood, and represented. This includes examining the role played in the formation of publics by new on- and offline infrastructures, data visualisations, social and economic practices, research methods and creative practices, and emerging and future technologies. Specifically, the event will facilitate cross-cutting conversations between designers, social scientists and creative technologists to explore the new challenges and opportunities afforded by thinking and working with “Data Publics”. This conference will be inherently interdisciplinary and as such we seek contributions from researchers within the areas of social science, design, new media art, data visualisation, and human-computer interaction. It will take place over three days, and will comprise a combination of hands-on workshops, paper presentations and an exhibition of work. Day one will provide hands-on introductions to key methods for investigating data publics, involving two workshops running in parallel. One workshop – ‘Digital Methods/Data Visualisation’, led by David Moats<https://www.tema.liu.se/tema-t/medarbetare/moats-david?l=en> – will introduce the digital methods and data visualisation approaches that can be used to conduct research in this field. The day will end with participants from the two workshops entering into dialogue. Following the workshops, the next two days will feature a mixture of academic paper presentations and exhibits from participants, with a focus throughout on the way a diverse array of methods, analytical approaches, representational techniques and practical engagements might be related to one another, put in conversation and combined. Participants are warmly invited to presents digital artefacts, data-visualisations or performances alongside their academic work or as stand-alone pieces that explore the topic of data-publics. For participation in the conference, we seek two forms of contributions: full papers and works to exhibit. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS AND EXHIBITS We seek either (a) abstracts for papers or (b) descriptions of exhibits that each engage with the formation, relevance, and effects of “Data Publics”. We invite contributions from professionals, scholars, designers, artists, activists, and those in other related fields, working in areas including but not limited to sociology, anthropology, geography, digital methods, interaction design, data visualisation, human-computer interaction, and art. The deadline for submission is January 22nd, 2017. Contributions should address at least one of the following three themes: 1. Digital Economies / The Effects of Data Publics ● What are the social, economic, ethical (and other) implications of emerging and future data publics? ● How are data-oriented publics constituted, including in relation to digital economies? ● Through which registers of everyday experience (e.g. as associated with making financial decisions, seeking emotional support, campaigning for change) do individuals participate in such publics? 2. Emergence and Complexity / The Behaviours of Data Publics ● How do different conditions (e.g. social, technological, affective) impact the emergence of data-oriented publics? ● What new design paradigms are enabled with large-scale data publics? ● How might we better conceptualise and work with complex data publics? ● How are new technologies affecting the shape/direction of data publics? 3. Methods / Interactions and interventions with Data Publics ● How can we intervene in the formation, stabilisation, destabilisation, and transformation of publics? What role might such methods/creative practices themselves play in the constitution of data publics? ● What forms of creative practice/visualisation/interaction design/human-computer interaction are needed to engage with data publics and to either support the emergence of or sustain such publics? ● What (new/existing/combination of) methods/tools are required to study/shape the emergence/fate of data publics? HOW TO SUBMIT Those interested in participating in the conference should submit either a paper abstract including 5-10 indicative references, or a description of the work to be exhibited including, if relevant, a maximum of 5 illustrative images and an additional description of any technical/spatial requirements the exhibit has. The volume will also specifically explore how these transformative trends and forces, while international in scale and dynamics, are experienced differently across the globe (from USA to Australia, Europe and Asia). Attention to these local and national differences will be a central theme of this book. The volume will also explore different and at times competing theoretical models, frameworks and perspectives that seek to grapple with and illuminate these transformations in the videogames industry. Our intention is to offer a plurality of theoretic perspectives and empirical methods from diverse social science, business and creative industry disciplines that can inform and illuminate our understanding of the forces shaping innovation and transformation in the global videogames industry. This volume is the fifth volume in a book series focused on business innovation and disruption in the creative industries and we are delighted to be able to continue our collaboration with Edward Elgar Publishers for this volume. 600 word abstracts should be submitted to [ja.banks(a)qut.edu.au] by 1 April 2017. The abstract should outline your chapter and identify your theoretic and empirical method approaches and selected topics related to the theme of the volume. Include as a separate file a brief biography covering your current institutional affiliation and position and a listing of your relevant publications and educational background and any other pertinent information on your qualifications for contributing to this volume. Based on these abstracts, invitations to submit chapters will be sent out before the end of April 2017. Tabloid and other forms of popular journalism use narrative devices of gossip, rumor and scandals while many news media have abandoned facts and intelligent analysis in favor of spectacular outrage and incivility, both situations acting as testaments to the lack of informed opinions. Although scholars and journalists work together during news reporting, investigations/documentaries, and on other issues that are covered by news media, scholars are often confined to academic research and disconnected from the realities faced by journalists. Can citizen journalists and journalism scholars help move forward with progressive research and practice? What are the qualifications and definitions of a ‘journalist?’ Is this someone who is employed professionally - or someone who has received an academic certification (degree) to be qualified? Or can anyone today be a journalist? Citizen participation has been seen as essential in the democratic processes of production, distribution, and reception of news. Online participatory media such as blogs, comments and videos offer a democratic platform for the expression of alternative ideas that may otherwise be filtered by traditional journalism. Yet, citizen journalists need critical media literacy that is often lost in the lure of visibility. How can journalism scholars creatively and critically engage citizen journalists in the dissemination of their research, informed opinions and cultural productions? Centre for Digital Culture at King's College London CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS This international conference aims at exploring the digital everyday, understood as the transformation of everyday life practices brought about by digital technology. From how we buy, walk around, get a cab, love, break up, go to bed, meet new people and sexual partners to the way we rate services, turn on the fridge, exercise and eat, social media, apps, and Big Data are reshaping some of the most basic activities in our lives. The conference will explore these digitally enabled transformations by looking at a number of domains affected by these shifts, for instance: of work and leisure, of friendship and love, of habits and routines. We will also explore a number of overarching dynamics and trends in the digital world that contribute to these transformations, including: processes of digital individualisation and aggregation; the elisions of spatial and temporal barriers; trends towards quantification and datafication; and the dialectic between control and alienation. We invite participants from various intellectual traditions and streams of research including media studies, sociology, psychology, information science, computing and anthropology. Together, we will explore a number of key questions. How, for example, is digital transformation affecting everyday life? To what extent is this process one of increasing individualisation of social experience? Or might there be something more complex happening? What are the new psychological and social pathologies that result from the digital transformation of everyday life and from processes of datafication and quantification? Is digital technology allowing for new forms of control over our everyday life or is it increasing alienation, making us overly dependent on infrastructures beyond our grasp? Is digital technology contributing to extending our freedom to choose, or is it stifling us with an overabundance of options? Is it guiding us towards who we 'really' are or want to be, or is it plunging us into a hall of mirrors that only reinforces our isolation and narcissism? Is it facilitating exploration, serendipity and curiosity, or is it installing us into a pre-programmed and predictable world, into a filter bubble where choices can be more easily measured and manipulated? Proposed paper abstracts may address the following topics: transformations of work patterns; changes in everyday life routine (sleep, meals, etc.); fitness and sport activity; love and sexual interactions; friendship and acquaintanceship; consumption and entertainment; sense of place and time; transportation and tourism; play and leisure. CFP ACM TVX 2017 - FULL AND SHORT PAPER SUBMISSIONS ACM TVX is the leading international conference for research into online video, TV interaction and user experience. It is a multi-disciplinary conference and we welcome submissions in a broad range of topics. Our aim is to foster discussions and innovative experiences amongst the academic research community and industry. In particular, we encourage submissions that address the different domains in the TV and online media ecosystems, including content production, implementation/deployment, design of novel interaction techniques and devices, new content distribution models, user research, user experience and exploration of interactive experiences for TV and online video. As the main theme of the conference is ‘Alternate Realities’, we particularly welcome contributions that look into specific tools, methods and evaluation of experiences related to creating and enabling alternate realities. This includes novel user interface designs, user-centered design methods and approaches and quality of experience measurement and monitoring. Research that explores the social aspects of TV and online video, enabling a complex ecosystem of people communicating with each other in synchronous and asynchronous manners. - Media studies: studies that aim to understand consumption practices and changing behavior as well as adoption and domestication of new TV-related services, and Quality of Experience. This topic also includes research on ethical, regulatory, and policy issues as well as novel mechanisms for evaluating the impact of TV and online video, and audience measurements. - Immersive media experiences: research on novel ways of content production (for example, 360 panoramic and omnidirectional video capture) and consumption making use of immersive devices such as head-mounted displays, as stand-alone experiences or in combination with other more traditional TV viewing devices (for example TV-set, tablet). This topic also includes explorations of augmented, mixed and virtual reality for content production, delivery and consumption. - Alternate realities: studies into what makes the access to alternate realities an enriching experience; explorations on how interaction, virtual and augmented reality technologies, UHD TV, second third and fourth screens, and streaming technologies can generate added value in delivering alternate realities, and on how to measure this added value. Reports on technologies that can better guide the user to find its preferred alternate reality, offering appealing, personalized, context aware content selected or recommended from the multitude of the available material online. - Data science and recommendations: descriptions of advanced computational systems based on content and/or user generated data to support collaborative filtering, interactive/synchronous environments, collective intelligence and crowdsourcing, or location-based and context-aware applications and services. - Business models & marketing: research, practice and case studies around novel business models and marketing strategies for the new media landscape of TV and online video (for example OTT services,..). This topic includes studies around novel ways of advertising models and strategies (for example targeted advertising, programmatic buying). - Innovative concepts and media art: research on innovative design strategies, new concepts, and prototype experiences for TV and online video, including case studies and media artworks and performances. SELECTION PROCESS Content will be rigorously reviewed by members of the program committee and peer experts. Each paper will receive feedback in the form of at least three peer review reports. Authors will receive feedback on their work after the first review round (March 3rd) and will be able to submit a rebuttal (March 10). The final selection will be made by the Technical Program Committee based on the review reports, rebuttal and meta-review. The program committee reserves the right to ask authors for specific changes as a precondition to publication. Authors of accepted long and short paper will be invited to give an oral presentation of their work at the conference. Accepted paper submissions will be published in the conference proceedings by ACM and indexed by the ACM Digital Library.
