CFP: Join a "research hackathon" on commenting!

Conceptualizing, Creating, & Controlling Constructive and Controversial Comments: A CSCW 2017 Research-athon http://comp.social.gatech.edu/comments-cscw2017/ Many social media platforms provide features for commenting, which often provide affordances for people to give feedback to others. Around the theme of advancing research about online comments, this workshop aims to bring together a diverse range of researchers for cross-discipline community building and productive mixed-methods research. The workshop is structured around a research “hackathon,” where participants actively work on producing initial stages of research, theory, and design related to a central dataset (in the case of this workshop, public comments from a historical reddit.com corpus). Participants will form collaborative teams to tackle questions of interest that move forward current thinking around online comment behaviors, participants, quality, and design. The one-day workshop is led by 5 researchers, and it will accommodate up to 32 participants. Call for Workshop Applications The CCCCCCCR workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to work collaboratively in a "research-athon/hackathon" style workshop. We invite participants with both qualitative and quantitative backgrounds to collectively investigate a shared commenting dataset (everyone will be granted access to a collection of shared, similar datasets from Reddit) in order to generate immediate questions, hypotheses, findings, designs, and theories. We invite proposals from academic, industry, public sector, and activist researchers that touch on commenting in relation to: - Behaviors: commenting participation, norms, and quality - People: comment posters, repliers, and audiences - Moderation: commenting promotion, deletion, and control - Design: comment threads, replies, and interaction The workshop will be held on Sunday February 26th, 2017, from 8:30-5:00. Additionally, two weeks before CSCW, participants will be expected to attend a 1-hour pre-conference online video conference meeting, where workshop organizers will provide access to datasets, organize topic areas with suggested teams (based on workshop applications, but these are flexible), and answer any questions. We will also point participants with specific interests to particular portions of the dataset. (For any participants who wish to explore qualitative methods – e.g., conduct interviews during workshop time – we will ask them to consider plans for this work at this point before the workshop.) Call for contributions: Remixing Life O̶n̶l̶i̶n̶e̶ In 1998, Annette Markham proposed a framework of the internet as a tool, as a place and as a way of being. In the introduction of her book “Life Online: Researching Real Experience in Virtual Space” she writes: “I wanted to know why people spent so much time online. I wondered what cyberspace meant to them, how it affected or changed their lives. I wanted to know how they were making sense of their experiences as they shifted between being in the physical world and being in these textual worlds created by the exchange of messages, where they could re-create their bodies, or leave them behind. I decided to go online to talk with some of the people who spend extensive time there. In this book, I tell the story of what it took for me to get connected and of what and whom I encountered once I was there. Through my experiences and my conversations with others, I provide an interpretation of some of the ways users (including myself) are making sense of their experiences online.” Since 1995-6, when this research was conducted, various metaphors have thrived and dwindled to help us make sense of and explain our experiences with and in digital, web, internet-mediated, or technologically saturated contexts. Cyberspace and the Electronic Frontier gave way to The Information Superhighway. The Net became the World Wide Web, which morphed into social networks, networked societies, and convergence culture. What was once called digital is now often called smart. As the internet has become more mobile and ubiquitous, it is predominantly experienced as a way of being. We suggest this as a starting point for thinking about how people experience their everyday lives in the 21st century. We are now inviting collaboration for a book that extends Markham’s 1998 ethnographic work “Life Online.” We are inviting stories of life o̶n̶l̶i̶n̶e̶ twenty years later. This book will combine ethnographic accounts with evocative interludes. Thus, we welcome proposals for creative renderings in addition to more traditional qualitative or ethnographic scholarship. Details are as follows: Track: Social Technical and Social Inclusion Issues Mini Track Title: Social Theory in Information Systems (STIR ’17) Description This year we are proud to celebrate the 21st consecutive year of the Social Theory in Information Systems Research minitrack. Since 1996, scholars and researchers have presented cutting edge research, using social theory in their work. STIR’17 solicits papers that use social theory in IS research drawing upon such approaches as sociotechnical theory, critical theory, social informatics, and organizational theory. We are interested in highlighting research that critically examines the constitution of ICT, and their roles in organizations and society. We are particularly interested in research that makes use of social theory to address the main theme of the conference, “A Tradition of Innovation,” meaning work that is innovative in terms of multi- and trans-disciplinary uses of social theory and methodologies to study the impacts of new and emerging technologies on people in their organizational and social lives. We are interested in questions about how we interact with ICTs in our work and social lives in ways that help and hinder the move towards more useful, productive, and happier lives. The goal of the workshops is to provide additional venues for discussing novel ideas as well as recent results of research in progress. In 2017 our goal is to have a balanced workshop program which comprises workshop formats of different types and a combination of emerging and established topics. Different full-day and half-day workshop formats are possible, for example: Novel interactive workshop formats with a correspondingly small number of participants. Such workshop formats might for example target at the exploration of a certain topic during the workshop through a moderated discussion or breakout sessions, resulting in a draft paper or report to be completed and published after the workshop. Particular priority will be given to these formats which require the active involvement of the participants. Traditional mini-conferences on specialized topics; such workshops typically have their own paper submission and review processes. Proposals for continuations of existing workshop series are welcome; a brief statement on the development of the workshop series, e.g., in terms of topics, number of paper submissions and participants or post-workshop publications over the years should be provided. Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation are also highly welcome. Call for Participation: Symposium on Media, Communication, and Film Studies Programs at Liberal Arts Colleges, May 23-24, 2017 Deadline for submissions: February 10, 2017 Media, Communication, and Film Studies Programs at Liberal Arts Colleges (MCFLAC) invites proposals for papers, panels, and exhibits for a two-day symposium, to be held at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The symposium will bring together faculty engaged in the scholarly and pedagogical praxis of media, communication, and film studies in the liberal arts context for two days of resource sharing, student-work showcases, workshops, and panel sessions. Building off the momentum of last year’s inaugural symposium, at Muhlenberg College, this year’s theme is “Revolutions.” We have chosen this theme in keeping with Colby College’s Center for the Arts and Humanities year-long focus, which is broadly conceived to encompass revolutions in the “political, literary, artistic, cultural, social, scientific, … conceptual,” and, we suggest, pedagogical and institutional realms. We invite proposals (250 to 500 words) that engage with our theme, including: * Revolutionary approaches to teaching * Teaching about revolutions--past and present * Revolutionizing the (increasingly neoliberal) institutional structures in which we are located * Mobilizing theory and pedagogy to facilitate revolutionary thinking * Analyzing the impact of ongoing revolutionary changes (sociocultural, economic, epistemological) upon our work in liberal education, including ideas for redirecting, capitalizing and/or adapting. * Interrogating the “revolutionary” rhetoric around higher education, with the liberal arts college said to be ripe for “disruption” * Responding to the Trump “revolution” and its reverberations on our campuses Preference will be given to submissions that fit the symposium theme, but we welcome submissions on all topics reflecting MCFLAC’s unique emphasis on praxis in liberal arts settings. We seek to bring together a diverse group of teachers, scholars, and students, from different backgrounds with various life experiences, teaching styles, and intellectual orientations.
