The Facebook President: Fact trumps fiction

call for proposals: Video Vortex XI (Kerala, India)
by Geert Lovink 02 Dec '16

02 Dec '16

Video Vortex XI: Call for Responses 23-26 February 2017, Kochi-Muzeris, Kerala, India Video Vortex XI: Video in Flux Video technology has radically altered the ways in which we produce, consume and circulate images, influencing the aesthetics and possibilities of moving image cultures, as well as yielding a rich body of scholarship across various disciplines. Given its ease of access and use, video has historically been aligned with media activism and collaborative work, further enabled by digital platforms, that facilitate transnational networks even as they exist within heightened systems of surveillance. Having emerged as the driving force behind the web, social media, and the internet of things, video, as Ina Blom (2016) suggests, is endowed with life-like memory and agency. As witnessed in the recent network crash in America as a result of the hacking of web cameras, video overload can even become a cause for infrastructural vulnerability. While the infrastructures of video in Europe and America may almost be taken for granted, in many parts of the global South, video exists across uneven conditions, and this invites engagements with video history and theory that are attentive to these varied lives and forms of video. Video Vortex XI proposes to place emphasis on these ‘other’ video cultures, which have largely evaded scrutiny under the fiction of video’s universalism. In keeping with this intention, Video Vortex XI is being held in the city of Kochi-Muzeris, in the midst of the 3rd Kochi biennial, which gives contemporary form to the histories of an extremely cosmopolitan city. Kochi-Muzeris housed large Chinese, Arab, Jewish, and Christian populations from its beginnings, and was governed by the Portugese, the Dutch, and the British, before becoming part of independent India in 1947. As such, the city provides a perfect location -- as the centre of trade between East Asia, South Asia, and Europe – for addressing the diversities and the synergies implicit in video cultures across the globe. We are interested in the sharing of provocations, research, speculations, video and film work that responds to current debates in film, video, media, networks, and game theory, while being particularly attentive to the implications that technologies of live video, surveillance, virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence have for the future of video & media cultures. We particularly encourage work that addresses the use of video in activism and political mobilisation, artistic practices, technological developments attendant to the medium (and its future), as well as the formal qualities of video in the digital post-national and post-medium context. The two day conclave will include screenings, discussions, workshops and round tables and we invite proposals that address (but are not limited to) the following themes. We are particularly interested in work that is Asia-centric but are open to contributions that engage with video cultures in the Global South : Histories of video in Asia Video art and activism Aesthetics of Online video Video and surveillance Video archiving & curation Infrastructures and platforms of video Emergent technologies of video and moving image We invite proposals in the following formats: Films & Curated Screening Programmes: Filmmakers and video artists are invited to submit work that addresses the themes and concepts outlined in the Video Vortex XI call. Curators are invited to propose short screening programmes of up to 3 hours that showcase video/film work , in response to the themes outlined. A focus on Asia is encouraged, but is not essential. Workshops: We invite video practitioners, artists, researchers, scientists, content producers and theorists to submit proposals for workshops that explore critical making as a mode of critique and inquiry. We are especially keen on hearing from those working with Virtual or Augmented reality, as well as those working with/on specific video archives. If you are proposing a workshop, please indicate costs for materials, as these will have to be built in separately as registration fees. All workshop organisers will have to make their own arrangements for materials required. Sessions, individual contributions, reflections, responses & performances: We welcome suggestions for sessions, round tables, and individual interventions addressing any of the topics outlined in the call, as well as proposals for performances. About Video Vortex XI Video Vortex XI will take place in the Mill Hall, an old grain mill in Mattanchery, which is one of the locations for the Kochi-Muzeris biennale 2017. Video Vortex XI will form a collateral event to the biennale, which attracts large numbers of artists, curators, scholars and tourists from around the world between the months of December 2016 and March 2017, when the biennale is on. For more information on the biennale see https://kochimuzirisbiennale.org <https://kochimuzirisbiennale.org/>. Submission deadlines: Please email proposals to Rashmi Sawhney: rashmi.sawhney(a)gmail.com <mailto:rashmi.sawhney@gmail.com> and Andreas Treske: treske(a)gmail.com <mailto:treske@gmail.com> by 16th December 2016. Selected applicants will be notified by 30th December 2016. Registration Fees: All Video Vortex XI events are open to the public. However, some of the workshops may have registration fees to cover material costs. Visa Application Guidelines: The Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore, can provide a letter of invitation to all Video Vortex participants who require one. Please note that it can take 1-4 weeks to get an Indian visa depending on your country of residence. Travel and Accommodation: participants will have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. However, we can recommend a list of hotels close to the Video Vortex venue. Video Vortex XI is being organised by the School of New Humanities & Design, Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology in collaboration with the University of Bilkent, Ankara, and the Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam.

3 DC Events - Global Democracy Networking, Local-up Facebook Groups, Civic Tech Happy Hour - Tue Dec 6
by Steven Clift 01 Dec '16

01 Dec '16

Thanks to our awesome digital democracy supporters out there, I am able to host three engaging small gatherings next Tuesday during a quick trip to DC. Please share this with your DC-area contacts interested in all things civic tech, open government, civic engagement and more. Come on along. All Events - Tuesday Dec 6, 2016: ** Digitally Networking Democracy Builders Globally? A Conversation 9:30 - 11 AM Info/RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/1825880037625153/ Hosted at NDI - National Democratic Institute ** Local-up? Digital Bridges for American Communities Brown Bag 12 Noon - 2 PM Info/RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/1681899672124715/ Lake Research Partners, 1101 17th St, NW Suite 301 ** OpenGov Civic Tech Facebook Group Happy Hour 5 - 8:00 PM Info/RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/1194660773961648/ James Hoban Bar, Dupont Circle Each link above has extended details. In summary: 1. The morning gathering is about sharing the secret sauce from 24 x 7 "e" knowledge sharing within the niche open gov/civic tech crowd with the broader and global democracy/civic engagement community that is so poorly e-networked in comparison. The geeks are getting it right, but how can we extend that? 2. The brown bag lunch (aka bring a sandwich) session is a strategic conversation about using social media post-election in the US to connect people across the partisan divide with a strategic local-up twist. Over a dozen volunteers responded to my post-election call - http://po.st/localupfacebook - to create new city-wide civic life Facebook Groups adapting the long-time E-Democracy online town hall model - http://e-democracy.org/if - to a new platform. What should we do next? How do we support these volunteers and position these local online town halls to spread across hundreds of cities? Contact me to volunteer for your city: clift(a)e-democracy.org Put "Local Facebook Group - Your City" in the subject. We must counter the "virtual civil war" - https://medium.com/@democracy - now before it destroys our democracies and this is one small way I hope to be part of the solution with others. If we can't better connect via social media on public issues starting locally with more civility, then we are absolutely screwed as a nation on national issues in the digital era. 3. Social time. For those DC area Open Government and Civic Technology Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/opengovgroup - members NOT in Paris at the OGP Summit, let's just have some french fries and French wine instead. :-) The Facebook Group is approaching 6400 members from well over half the countries in the world. If you have ideas on who might fund a strategic outreach campaign to bring it to 16,000 members, let me know. This group delivers quality knowledge exchange every day. Let's drink to that! International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction SI: Following User Pathways (abstracts due 19 December).
by Hall, Margeret (KSRI) 01 Dec '16

01 Dec '16

Dear Colleagues, Please consider submitting to this SI, and forwarding to your relevant contacts. Apologies for cross-posting. ? International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction Special Issue: Following User Pathways http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/est/hihc-cfb-8.2016 Call for Papers Social media and the resulting tidal wave of available data have changed how researchers analyze communities at scale. However, the full potential for science has not yet been achieved, despite the popularity of social media analysis in the past decade. To date, few researchers invest in cross-platform analyses due to various reasons, e.g. variations in curating data, disparate methods and tools, complexity of cross-platform and mixed method analysis, methodological conflicts arising from mixed method studies, etc. "Following user pathways: Using cross platform and mixed methods analysis in social media studies" brings together a community of researchers and professionals to address methodological, analytical, conceptual, and technological challenges and opportunities of mapping user across platforms with mixed method analysis in social media ecosystems. See the full call and scope at: http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/est/hihc-cfb-8.2016? CFP: A Special Issue of Science Communication
by Hara, Noriko 01 Dec '16

01 Dec '16

Call for papers for a special issue of Science Communication Public science in a wired world: How online media are changing science communication Guest Editors: Sarah R Davies (University of Copenhagen), Joachim Allgaier (Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt), and Noriko Hara (Indiana University). Science communication – public dissemination and debate of scientific knowledge – is increasingly taking place online. From the websites of scientific organizations such as universities or scholarly societies to social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook groups or Reddit, science is negotiated by public audiences in online spaces alongside traditional formats such as the mass media, public lectures, or popular science writing. Social research is starting to engage with these spaces and tools, and to understand how science communication is produced and consumed in digital and social media. Recent work has, for example, explored how authority is negotiated in science blogs (Riesch & Mendel 2013), what kind of science is presented online (Brossard 2013), how Twitter is used to engage with scientific projects (Gastrow 2015; Kahle et al 2016), or how blogging is used to manage scientific identity (Steinke 2013). As of yet, however, there has been no dedicated volume or special issue devoted to science communication in digital and social media, and this emergent body of research remains dispersed. This special issue will showcase cutting edge research in online science communication and thereby consolidate and draw together this emerging field. Potential focus areas for papers (which may use any recognized systematic methodological approach, whether qualitative or quantitative) might include (but are not limited to): * Science videos on YouTube, TED or other platforms; * Science as a social media phenomenon (such as Facebook pages or science on Twitter); * Science blogging by scientists or non-scientists; * University websites and online branding activities; * The role of science journalism in an online era; * Online public information campaigns (such as Science: It’s a Girl Thing!); * Discussion forums and online dialogue and debate by scientists or non-scientists. We welcome papers that interrogate these developments by critically exploring, for instance, how online media are affecting scientific authority, the visions of science that are being constructed through online communication, the reception and interpretation of science online, or how online science communication is managed, produced and/or misused. Full papers are due May 1, 2017, for publication likely in late 2017 or early 2018. Earlier submissions are very strongly encouraged. Mention the special issue in your cover letter. Late papers may be considered if extra space is available. Papers should follow the Science Communication guidelines for length and format; submit at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sc. Our ideal manuscript is between 7,000 and 9,000 words, inclusive of notes, references, and other material. Additional guidelines can be found at scx.sagepub.com. Queries regarding the special issue can be addressed to the guest editors (Sarah Davies, Joachim Allgaier, and Noriko Hara; contact at srdavies(a)hum.ku.dk) or to the journal’s editor, Susanna Priest, at editorscicom(a)gmail.com.
