DATA POWER 2017 A two-day, international conference Dates: 22nd & 23rd June 2017 Venue: School of Journalism & Communication, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Data Power 2017 builds on the successful Data Power 2015 Conference held in Sheffield. Increasingly pervasive in our daily lives, data are constituted through converging technologies and practices such as the internet of things, smart cities, drones and precision agriculture; global finance, credit scoring and data brokerage firms; surveillance, predictive policing and customer relation management systems, to name a few. Data are also generated by and flow through applications, software, platforms, and infrastructures that reshape how we play, work, eat, socialize, see ourselves, and know the world. In an era of data power, data have become agentic, especially when input into black-boxed algorithms and systems whose outputs are used to profile and sort us, influence the political economy, and for purposes for which no consent was given. Is this a 'fait accompli'? To answer this question, the Data Power 2017 conference asks: How can we reclaim some form of data-based power and autonomy, and advance data-based technological citizenship, while living in regimes of data power? Is it possible to regain agency and mobilize data for the common good? To do so, which theories help to interrogate and make sense of the operations of data power? What kind of design frameworks are needed to build and deploy data-based technologies with values and ethics that are equitable and fair? How can big data be mobilized to improve how we live, beyond notions of efficiency and innovation? This conference creates a space to reflect on these and other critical issues relating to data’s ever more ubiquitous power. To date, the following keynote speakers and commentators on data power have been confirmed: * Paul Edwards, University of Michigan, author of A Vast Machine: The Atmosphere of Big Data (2010); * Stefania Milan, University of Amsterdam, author of Social Movements and Their Technologies: Wiring Social Change (2016), and PI of the DATACTIVE project; * Helen Nissenbaum, New York University, author of Privacy, Big Data and the Public Good (2014), and PI of the Values in Design project; * Frank Pasquale, University of Maryland, author of The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information (2015). Papers and Sessions are invited on the following - and other relevant - topics: * The political economy of data * Data and journalism * Theorizing data * The politics of data visualization * Data labour * The social life of data and data-driven methods * The politics of open and linked data * Data-driven governance, surveillance and control * Data, discrimination and inequality * Social, ethical and legal issues * Data citizens * Data activism, citizen engagement and advocacy * Data, genealogy and power * Data power and violence * Critical cultural and feminist approaches to data * Resistance, agency and appropriation. Information/details * Whilst we welcome papers and sessions of all kinds, please note that this conference focuses on critical questions about data’s power and also papers that are critical and/or reflective with regards to the social and cultural consequences of the rise of data's power. * Please submit 250 word paper proposals, using the following online submission system: https://ocs.library.carleton.ca/index.php/datapower/datapower2017. * The deadline for paper proposals is Friday 25th January 2017. * The conference fee is $225 (CAD) for all, and $90 (CAD) for students. * The organising committee will select papers for a special issue on Data Power in the following peer reviewed journals: The Canadian Journal of Communication and Online Information Review. * Ottawa is Canada’s Capital, and is celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2017. The City is home to numerous international museums and galleries, and Carleton University is set along the beautiful Rideau River and the Rideau Canal. Best wishes, The Data Power Conference team Tracey, Helen, Jo, Ganaele, Ysabel & Merlyna datapower2017(a)gmail.com Tracey P. IGF Day 3 update
by Joly MacFie 08 Dec '16

The session I really enjoyed yesterday was the one on accessibility and public policy. As much civic activity goes online this is so important! FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn made her points on the topic very powerfully and succinctly. See <http://www.igf2016.mx/multimedia.php> https://youtu.be/Fn0BNHd1gF4?t=942 and http://isoc-ny.org/igf16/wed/rm2.txt The Elon University 'Imagining The Internet' Project students have been busy conducting interviews with participants and you can see them at https://www.youtube.com/user/ImaginingtheInternet/videos The NTIA have now published Larry Strickling's prepared remarks from the opening ceremony: https://www.ntia.doc.gov/speechtestimony/2016/remarks-assistant-secretary-s… Glenn McKnight of ISOC Canada/NARALO has taken almost 1000 photos and they are on his flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/glennmcknight/albums/72157675856256361 One picture that Glenn didn't take (to my knowledge) but is much admired is the one of Vint Cerf, Steve Crocker, Olaf Kaukman, and Oscar Alejandro Robles-Garay wearing sombreros! - http://bit.ly/losigfamigos Also a musing, but embarassing, is the fact that IGF's home site was down earl i er today, due to their domain expiring yesterday! MoneyLab#3 Failing Better Conference: Reviews are available online
by Leila Ueberschlag 07 Dec '16

07 Dec '16

Over 150 people attended MoneyLab #3 Failing Better, which took place on 1 and 2 December 2016 at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The 2-day conference featured panel discussions on financial surveillance, on the music industry and its revenue models as well as workshops on the blockchain technology and its social and political impact and artworks. Reviews of the different sessions and workshops can be found on the MoneyLab Blog: <http://networkcultures.org/moneylab/ <http://networkcultures.org/moneylab/>> Find below the review, by Pablo Velasco, of the workshop: Role Play Your Way to Budgetary Blockchain Bliss, hosted by Ruth Catlow and Ben Vickers (Furtherfield) Ruth Catlow (artist and curator) and Ben Vickers (curator, writer, and technologist), brought the LARPing tradition to MoneyLab in this special workshop ‘Role PLay Your Way to Budgetary Blockchain Bliss’. Unsuspecting participants were assigned characters – generic roles that frequent the business cycle of start up tech companies trying to make the next big thing with the latest technological innovation. The only twist was that this 2-day start up tech hackathon was aimed at creating Blockchain based businesses ideas that improve the life and future of cats. For this role-playing workshop, each participant was assigned a cat-invested persona and the general goal of networking their way into a profitable enterprise for themselves, the cat community, and the hosting institution. The workshop critically emulated the extravagant discourse and excitement surrounding the super-automation and hyperconectivity that comes with blockchain and similar technologies, and the capacity of the technology stakeholders to both increase and diminish global inequity. PhD studentship on Participatory self-quantification for patients through IoT-based medical devices
by Mina Vasalou 07 Dec '16

07 Dec '16

Apologies for cross-posting. Please disseminate to students seeking doctoral funding. Participatory self-quantification for patients through IoT-based medical devices Principal supervisor: Professor George Roussos (Bbk) Co-supervisor: Dr Mina Vasalou (UCL IOE) Sustained advances in microelectronics have enabled the integration of miniaturised information processing devices and low-power wireless communication into a wide range of physical objects. These artefacts integrate seamlessly with information networks thus bringing about the Internet of Things (IoT) and its ecosystem of applications and services which offer the potential to fundamentally transform the ways in which citizens consume health care services by blending the until recently separate physical and digital experiences into one. Indeed, most personal experiences of well-being and disease remain largely unobserved and the IoT is about to change this situation. Yet despite its promise, there is accumulating evidence to suggest that users only briefly engage in these opportunities, leading to high abandonment rates of IoT-based wellness and health tracking services (e.g. Arthur 2012, Farago 2014, Rapp et al. 2016). This is often seen as the consequence of a technology-rather than a patient-driven approach and an alternative perspective is that IoT developers should design for people and communities who conceive of the benefits of data fusion as they fit with their existing agendas such as people already involved in forms of self-reflection and activism or self-advocacy relating to their disease. This PhD will examine this question in the particular context of Parkinson¹s disease (PD). Specifically, we aim to understand current practices of patient activism, advocacy and self-tracking (or self-quantification) in PD; and, understand the transformative role of the IoT in giving agency and voice to individuals and communities. Candidate Requirements: This PhD is aimed at graduates with a strong interest in multi-disciplinary research. Research will be organised around case studies to be developed 'in the wild' where the student will conduct participatory research with patients to understand how the IoT changes practice and can enable patient empowerment. The student should be familiar with qualitative research methods and user-centred design practices. Good knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: social science and health research; IoT technologies; information visualisation; participatory design; ethnographic research methods.
