Call for Submissions: ICA Young Scholars Preconference on Interventions in the Practice of Visual Communication Research (Deadline: January 1 2017)
by Giorgia Aiello 15 Dec '16

15 Dec '16

Call for Papers ICA Young Scholars Preconference on Interventions in the Practice of Visual Communication Research University of California at San Diego (San Diego, California) Thursday May 25, 2017 Organizers Samantha Close (University of Southern California, USA), Ayellet Pelled (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA) David L. Morris II (University of Oregon, USA), Giorgia Aiello (University of Leeds, UK) Rationale Intervention comes in different forms. Research questions aim to intervene in societal and philosophical problems, scholarly conferences and initiatives intervene within the halls of academia and the practice of contemporary research, and publication intervenes in both scholarly and public debate. As society becomes increasingly mediatized through both digital technologies and nostalgic returns to traditional folk arts, it is essential to analyze the specifically visual aspects of communicating in the social world. And yet, because of this same cultural and technological upsurge in visual communication, scholars who focus on the visual are often spread across ICA divisions based on the non-visual content of their work, from health communication to popular communication to rhetoric to technology and beyond. Scholarship is also increasingly presented using visual images, to both public and academic audiences. This raises challenges in communication and publication, particularly for young scholars. We aim to bring together a critical mass of emerging and senior scholars to discuss, reflect, and challenge each other on our interventions into the visual. In this way, the preconference is also an intervention into scholarly careers in the still-growing field of visual communication studies. Aims This one-day preconference will bring together young scholars (current Ph.D. students and early career postdoctoral researchers) engaged in promising research on visual communication. We aim to 1) theorize key challenges in visual communication research and publication; 2) provide strategies for addressing and overcoming these challenges; 3) provide a forum for cross-divisional and transnational networking between young and senior scholars; and 4) provide feedback on young scholars’ research projects and publication plans. Format This event follows two very successful ICA Young Scholars Visual Communication Studies preconferences in San Juan 2015 and Fukuoka 2016, which featured presentation and workshop sessions with young and senior scholars from ten countries. This year’s preconference will follow a similar format but focus on a new, complementary set of issues and questions. First, an opening keynote will give an overview of key interventions into visual communication research happening now and those needed to advance the discipline. Second, in poster, non-traditional, and brief oral presentation sessions, young scholars will have the opportunity to present their research projects, discuss their challenges in conceptualizing and communicating their projects with other participants, network with peers, and receive substantial feedback on their projects from experienced senior scholars. All young and senior scholars will participate in the presentation sessions, a format that provides a practice-oriented overview of a range of approaches to visual communication studies and common challenges. Third, young scholars and senior experts will split into smaller breakout groups for focused discussion on a specific aspect of visual communication studies research. Finally, in a closing plenary, we will summarize key insights originating from discussions in the breakout groups and, together with all participants, we will discuss ideas and plans for future networking and research events. Submissions We invite young scholars from all ICA divisions and interest groups to submit extended abstracts on both completed and ongoing projects. We welcome submissions on all aspects of the visual communication process (production context, media context, reception context) and on all visual methods, as well as on a broad range of topics, such as visual political communication, visual science and health communication, visual popular communication, etc. This year, ICA has for the first time explicitly called for scholarly projects in non-traditional formats through the “Making and Doing” exhibition to follow the opening plenary. Non-traditional publication and visual communication research are closely allied, as many alternative publication formats take advantage of the unique affordances of the visual or themselves interrogate visual communication. We particularly invite submissions of in-progress work in these non-traditional formats, or which use “making and doing” methods, by young scholars. Extended abstracts should briefly summarize the project, including theory, methods, results (where applicable), and its relevance to the study of the visual. Please specifically discuss challenges in conceptualizing and communicating the visual aspects of the project, as well as in which areas senior scholar feedback would be most useful. Extended abstracts should be limited to a maximum of 1,000 words (double-spaced; illustrations, tables and references do not count against this total of words). Please remove all identifying information from the document and include a separate title page indicating the name(s) of the author(s), the affiliation(s) of the author(s), the title of the project, and the status of the project (e.g. completed project, work in progress). Please also note your preference for presentation format (e.g. poster, brief talk, non-traditional, or no preference). Please send your submissions via e-mail to sclose(a)usc.edu<mailto:sclose@usc.edu> no later than 1 January 2017. Decisions will be made by 31 January 2017. The preconference will be open to a maximum of 40 young scholars. Participants will be selected based on the quality of their extended abstracts. In the review process, we will also consider that a reasonable range of topics will be covered by the poster presentations and that participants can be grouped in breakout sessions focused on similar concerns. Venue The preconference will be hosted on the campus of the University of California at San Diego in San Diego, CA. Transportation from the main conference hotel to the university campus and vice versa will be provided for all participants with a chartered bus (about 15-30 minutes each way). Fee There will be a US $106 fee for preconference participants to cover transportation, room rental, and catering costs. Depending on the availability of additional funding for the preconference, we may also be able to offer a discounted fee at the time of registration. Website Please also visit the accompanying website www.visualcommunicationstudies.net<http://www.visualcommunicationstudies.net/> for any updates on the preconference. Contacts Please do not hesitate to contact us in case you should have any questions regarding the preconference. **Apologies for cross-posting** CALL FOR PAPERS *Please give widest distribution* THE 23RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON LANGUAGE, INTERACTION, AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATION University of California, Santa Barbara May 19-20, 2017 Presented by: The Language, Interaction, and Social Organization (LISO) Graduate Student Organization at UCSB ~ & ~ The Center for Language, Interaction and Culture (CLIC) Graduate Student Association at UCLA PLENARY SPEAKERS Patricia Baquedano-López UC Berkeley Education Erica Cartmill UCLA Anthropology Tanya Stivers UCLA Sociology Theme: “Encounter and Interface” The LISO conference promotes interdisciplinary research and discussion in the analysis of naturally occurring human interaction. Papers will be presented by national and international scholars on a variety of topics in the study of language, interaction, and culture. The papers primarily employ analysis of naturally occurring data drawing from methodologies that include conversation analysis, discourse analysis, ethnographic methods, ethnomethodology, interactional linguistics, and interactional sociolinguistics. The conference theme this year is “Encounter and Interface”. “Encounter” and “interface” here are both broadly defined and inextricably connected. Encounters, ranging from interactions between individual speakers to the intermingling of distinct linguistic and cultural systems, now occur through various contexts, both face-to-face and digitally-mediated. How are the ideological underpinnings of these encounters manifested and re-shaped in everyday interaction? How is online language and culture shaping– and being shaped by – the norms of face-to-face communication? Presentations related to the conference theme may include but are not limited to: • blending of communicative interfaces (e.g., how is online interaction talked about in face-to-face conversation, or vice versa?) • reciprocal influences between types of literacy (e.g., digital, classroom, etc.) • the influence of technology on student agency in the classroom and at home • how social media challenges traditional understandings of interaction • technology as a language-learning resource • the role of embodiment in interaction (face-to-face and online) • interaction in virtual worlds • construction(s) of identity through online and face-to-face interaction • socialization into new cultural and linguistic systems • examinations of how interaction and language in use reveal power dynamics between speakers of varying genders, sexualities, and abilities, or ethnoracial, class, national, and linguistic backgrounds Although submissions based on the conference theme will be particularly welcome, innovative work on all aspects of language and interaction will be considered. We welcome abstracts from undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty working in the areas of Anthropology, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Communication, Digital Humanities, Education, Ethnic Studies, Feminist Studies, Internet Studies, Literacy Studies, Linguistics, Psychology, and Sociology. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Abstracts must be submitted via email to lisoconference(a)gmail.com<mailto:lisoconference@gmail.com>. Author information, affiliation, and contact information should be submitted in the body of the email only, with abstract attachments made completely anonymous. Please include in your abstract document the title of your poster or presentation and your preference for poster or presentation session. If you have a format preference but would like to be considered for both, please indicate that clearly. Presenters will have 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. Posters will be displayed during a one-hour poster session. Abstracts must be submitted in .doc, .docx, or .pdf, format only. Abstracts must be no more than 500 words long and should not include the author's name or any other identifying information. The abstract should include the following: (1) a clear statement of the main point or argument of the paper; (2) a brief discussion of the problem or research question with reference to previous research and the work's relevance to the area of study; (3) a short piece of data to support the main point or argument; (4) conclusions and/or implications of the research, however tentative. If your presentation relies on a visual representation of data (e.g., video data or screenshots of Internet data), up to three images may be included in your abstract as contributing data samples. In the case of an abstract longer than 500 words, only the first 500 words will be read. Papers will be selected based on evaluation of the anonymous abstract. Abstract submission opens on November 1, 2016. Deadline for electronic submission and receipt of abstracts is January 13, 2017. Late submissions will not be accepted. Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance will be sent via email in early February 2017. We look forward to welcoming you to an exciting conference in Troyes! Myriam Lewkowicz, Markus Rohde Conference Chairs chairs(a)comtech.community == IMPORTANT DATES * February 1: Papers (full and short), workshop proposals and case studies due * March 1: Notification of acceptance for workshops proposals * April 1: Notification of acceptance for papers (full and short) and case studies * April 20: Camera-ready for papers (full and short), workshop descriptions and case studies due * May 2: Workshop papers and Doctoral Consortium applications due * June 26-30: Workshops and conference in Troyes, France == CALL FOR PAPERS (FULL AND SHORT) C&T focuses on the notion of communities as social entities comprised of people who share something in common; this common element may be geography, needs, goals, interests, practices, organizations, enemies, or other bases for social connection. Communities are considered to be a basic unit of social experience. For the 2017 round of C&T, we welcome contributions that particularly pay attention on technology that can be deployed for the common good. This raises a number of questions, issues, and implications that might not be relevant in other computing related conferences. The common good generally means finding peaceful ways to resolve conflict, securing a more equitable society, a healthy and diverse environment for ourselves and future generations, and cultural diversity. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can support community formation and development by facilitating communication and coordination among members, as well as enable and empower communities to deal with challenges and threats. We must also acknowledge the possibility that ICTs could be used in processes that degrade communities or community life; some ICTs could actually be antithetical to healthy communities. In this case certain developments should at the very least be questioned, if not actively discouraged. For this reason we also encourage critiques of existing systems, approaches, policies, and trajectories— any of the factors that encourage private gain at the expense of the common good. It’s not enough to assert that some particular technology will support the common good. Too often, in fact, the assumption is that a particular technological approach — if not the whole of ICT development — is steadfastly advancing towards a state of maximal support for the common good. What lines of argument can we develop that help support a case that a technological approach will support the common good — or wouldn’t? As researchers and academics we must entertain the possibility that our investigations may force us to revise some of our own approaches and assumptions, including rethinking who are the stakeholders of our work, and how our work should be evaluated. Modeling and designing the world we’d like to see can provide invaluable insights. Beyond conducting research and developing tools, services, policy, and the like, we aim to build the circumstances that help promote this work and the orientation in the world. What systems can help encourage civic intelligence and public problem solving? How do we recognize systems that discourage them? Are certain approaches to design, deployment, etc. more likely to result in systems that support the common good? And, if so, where have these been used—and with what degree of success. This focus acknowledges the reality that technological systems exist within social environments and frameworks, policy proposals, and educational approaches may be extremely relevant. Finally, how do we as a community identify our goals, gather our information, and report our findings as to help the communities upon whom we rely to use the information most effectively? Topics appropriate for submission to this conference are manifold. And they may emerge from a variety of relevant perspectives including philosophy, social sciences, design, art, the humanities, etc. Examples of some of the vibrant areas of communities and technology research include, but are not limited to: * Domains such as learning/education, health, cultural heritage; crises and natural disasters; environmental degradation and climate change; * Variety of communities and their relationships to technology; urban and rural, migrants, refugees, indigenous and first peoples, LGBTQ, low-income communities, measuring impacts on communities —positive, negative, and mixed * Bottom-up movements, grassroots developments, civic activism, community engagement, participatory publics, communities and innovation; * Crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, collective and civic intelligence, community learning, early warning systems, collective awareness, collaborative awareness platforms; social cognition; community emotion; happiness; historical memory; * Community owned and operated technology, DIY and maker communities (makerspaces, fablabs, crafters); community agriculture; * Online and offline communities, urban and rural communities; urban technologies; urban informatics; urban interaction design; cross-community work; new forms of communities; * Community memory, archives, and knowledge; resilience; smart communities in the context of smart cities; sustainable communities; economic and social development; * Civic problem-solving, communities in relation to urgent and complex challenges to the health of the planet and the people that inhabit it; collaborative systems; partnering with education; government, civil society, and movements; * Sharing economies; social media and social capital; associations, strong and weak ties, stakeholders; * Methodological issues including research, action, participatory approaches, community-centred design, infrastructuring and evaluation methodologies; ethnographic and case studies of communities; * Supporting community processes: sensemaking, online deliberation; argumentation and discussion-mapping; community ideation and idea management systems; collective decision-making; group memory; participatory sensory networks; * Technological issues: community toolkits; federated systems; integration with other systems, integration with face-to-face systems; * The future of communities and technology; simulations and utopian design; durable relationships and long-range goals; and * Developing and supporting the Communities & Technologies community; social and technological critique; effectiveness and other measures == Submitting a Paper Please submit all papers and abstracts using the ACM recommended templates. Papers will be submitted via EasyChair. In order to allow for a diversity of contributions, the conference will accept full and short research papers. * Full papers must be no longer than ten pages, including all additional material such as references, appendices, and figures. * Short (or Work-in-progress) papers must be no longer than four pages. The papers must include a title, sufficient space for the author name(s) to appear on the paper, abstract, keywords, body, and references. Papers submitted by the due date will undergo a double blind peer review process by the Program Committee and will be evaluated on the basis of their significance, innovation, academic rigour, and clarity of writing. The C&T proceedings are part of the International Conference Proceedings Series published by ACM. Please send any questions to the Program Chairs: papers(a)comtech.community Ingrid Mulder, Douglas Schuler Program Chairs == CASE STUDIES This year, C&T introduces a new category of submissions: Case Studies. With this category, we encourage C&T researchers or practitioners to present a case study or an experience report of real-world cases projects that provide new insights and learnings to other C&T researchers and practitioners. In general, both kinds of research are welcome – more analytical (such as ethnographical case studies and historical analysis of case) as well as more action-oriented (such as design case studies, action research reports). In addition, methodological reflections about case study research are appreciated. == What counts as a good case study research Case studies should be inspiring, but should not be constrained by traditional academic expectations. The primary criteria is relevance in making a significant contribution to the community. Successful case studies will meet the following criteria: they report on new work that derives in original insights, they have the potential for real impact on the C&T body of knowledge and practice, they report on very specific or singular communities or experiences. They shed light into emerging and/or marginalized topics and address existing gaps in the broader C&T methods and understanding. Suggested topics of interest include, but are not restricted to: * Technology design and use in the developing world and non-Western societies * Research of a specific domain, user group, organisation or experience, discussing its rationale, any issues, and lessons learned * Pilot studies preceding and informing larger-scale investigations * Application, critique, or evolution of a method, process, theory, or tool * Challenges to existing notions of Research, Design, Theory, and Practice * Revisiting definitions of C&T practice * The role of technology in civic activism, community engagement, participatory publics * The role of technology in the context of the refugee and migrant crisis * The role of technology in consumer empowerment (supply chain transparency, open data, etc.) * Sharing and commoning practices (communities and the sharing economy and/or commons-based production) Other more specific areas of interest: * Uses and misuses of technology by communities * New maker practices * Technology in humanitarian crisis contexts * Decentralisation and blockchain * Gender and technology * HCI teaching and learning in education, training, or knowledge sharing. * ‘Big Ideas’ and how to make them happen == Preparing and submitting your case study Case studies will be submitted via EasyChair. The Case Study submissions must be reported using the ACM recommended templates, should not exceed 5 pages, and can include supplementary material in the form of pictures, videos, documents, websites, etc. If supplementary materials are submitted, we request authors to include a list of the supplementary documents in their submission and a description of the nature and purpose of each item. Submissions will undergo a peer review process by the Program Committee members. Accepted case study reports will be published in the Proceedings, together with long and short papers. The C&T proceedings are part of the International Conference Proceedings Series published by ACM. Please send any questions to the Case Studies Chairs: casestudies(a)comtech.community Mara Balestrini, Gunnar Stevens Case Studies Chairs == WORKSHOPS C&T Workshops will run for a half or one full day and will take place on June 26th or June 27th. Workshops provide a platform to discuss, explore and advance specific research areas of Communities & Technologies with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the C&T community a new, innovative way of thinking about the topic, or ideas that suggest promising directions for future research. Topics addressed may include (but are not limited to) theories, methodologies, artifacts in practices, emerging application areas, design innovations, strategy and organizational issues pertaining to communities and technology. While workshop summaries will be integrated into the conference proceedings published by ACM (pending), organizers can consider converting individual workshop papers into edited books or special issues of journals. Furthermore, there is the option of publishing the workshop submissions (all contributions) as an International Report on Socio-Informatics (IRSI): http://www.iisi.de/en/international-reports-on-socio-informatics-irsi/. You may consider including such publication goals in your workshop proposal. A workshop proposal must be prepared according to ACM recommended templates and should be no more than 4 pages including references. Furthermore each proposal should: * include the title of the workshop, * list organizers and their backgrounds, * provide workshop’s theme, goals and activities, * indicate maximum number of participants, * provide means of soliciting and selecting participants. Please send proposals directly to the Workshop Chairs: workshops(a)comtech.community Sukeshini A. Grandhi, Lars Rune Christensen Workshop Chairs == DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM The Doctoral Consortium is scheduled prior to the main conference programme, on Sunday 25 June 2017. The Doctoral Consortium (DC) offers research students a special forum where they can present, discuss and progress their research plans with peers and established senior researchers. We especially welcome contributions which are related to the overall C&T conference theme, which is devoted to technology that can be deployed for the common good. This encompasses questions and approaches which are concerned with securing healthy and diverse ways of societal development. However, all contributions falling in the scope of the C&T conference are welcome. Research students wishing to attend the doctoral consortium should submit up to 4 pages, using the ACM templates, addressing the following: * Introduction setting up your research area and specific research question(s)/goals(s) (including key related work); * Overall research approach, methodology, and expected contributions; * Work in progress (including findings to date and next steps); * Questions and issues for discussion, and what you hope to gain from attending the DC; * Short bio. CFP: InfoSocial Grad Conference @ Northwestern
by William Marler 14 Dec '16

14 Dec '16

Call for Papers InfoSocial 2017 A graduate student conference hosted by the twin programs of Media, Technology, and Society (MTS) and Technology and Social Behavior (TSB) at Northwestern University. Date: April 7-8, 2017 Location: Northwestern University, Evanston, IL Submission Deadline: February 1, 2017 The Information Age was getting hype before most graduate students today were born. The idea of the Network Society is approaching the U.S. drinking age. And the Digital Era? As old as Rick Astley. To break new ground and continue to explore how people interact through and with technology, we need novel ideas, updated methods, and a disregard for disciplinary conventions and boundaries. Enter InfoSocial. InfoSocial is a student-run conference dedicated to showcasing interdisciplinary graduate student research on the role of technology in contemporary society. In 2017, the conference aims to bring scholars from diverse disciplines together to showcase new, innovative approaches to key questions, and highlight opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations that explore the (now old) argument that human society has forever been changed by technology. This is your call. We are looking for papers authored by graduate students (submitted as extended abstracts) that are theoretically engaging, methodologically sound, and socially relevant, as well as timely. We are disciplinary agnostics, seeking submissions from within and across fields like communication and media studies, information science, computer science, science and technology studies, human-computer interaction, sociology, psychology, political science, and anthropology. New and mixed methodologies will excite us, including approaches that blend established methods with new, innovative tools. Here are only some of the topics we hope to include: - Human-computer interaction - Online behavior & cyberpsychology - Privacy, surveillance & encryption - Social media & big data - Youth, family & the media - Social impact, policy & regulation of technology - Digital cultures, online communities & gaming - Digital inequality, skills & social capital - Information and communication technologies for development - Communication, technology, and politics - Transformation of the mass media in the digital era Submissions: To submit to InfoSocial 2017, please prepare an anonymized extended abstract of no more than 1,000 words (excluding references) that explains your paper, any unique methodological approaches you use, and how it pushes the boundaries of our knowledge about how people interact through and/or with technology. Please format your abstract in either APA or ACM SIGCHI style. Submit your abstract no later than February 1, 2017 at https://infosocial.soc.northwestern.edu/submit/. Dates and Information: Extended abstract submission deadline: February 1 Acceptance notification date: February 20 Conference Dates: Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, 2017 Location: Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois Conference URL: https://infosocial.soc.northwestern.edu/ Note: There will be no fee to attend or participate in the conference. Some meals will be provided, and interested attendees may request to be housed with Northwestern students. While we can make no guarantees, we will do our best to accommodate requests. Code of Conduct and Anti-Harassment Policy: InfoSocial is dedicated to a harassment-free conference experience for everyone. Our code of conduct and anti-harassment policy can be found at: https://infosocial.soc.northwestern.edu/code-of-conduct/

Government website harvesting
by Joy McNally 13 Dec '16

13 Dec '16

I was wondering if someone has created a running list of who is harvesting government websites ahead of the US government transition next month. There have been a few articles published in the past couple of days focusing on individual efforts, but it seems a lot of groups might be overlapping what they are archiving. Here's a good article discussing a few of the efforts: Scientists are frantically copying U.S. climate data, fearing it might vanish under Trump https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/12/13/scient… Thanks for any leads!
