new book: Private Power, Online Information Flows and EU Law
by Angela Daly 13 Dec '16

13 Dec '16

I am delighted to announce that my book, Private Power, Online Information Flows and EU Law: Mind the Gap has just been published by Hart: http://www.bloomsbury.com/au/private-power-online- information-flows-and-eu-law-9781509900657/ (20% discount when using code 'CV7' at checkout - www.hartpub.co.uk) *Description* This monograph examines how European Union law and regulation address concentrations of private economic power which impede free information flows on the Internet to the detriment of Internet users' autonomy. In particular, competition law, sector specific regulation (if it exists), data protection and human rights law are considered and assessed to the extent they can tackle such concentrations of power for the benefit of users. Using a series of illustrative case studies, of Internet provision (including the net neutrality debate), search, mobile devices and app stores, and the cloud, the work demonstrates the gaps that currently exist in EU law and regulation. It is argued that these gaps exist due, in part, to current overarching trends guiding the regulation of economic power, namely neoliberalism, by which only the situation of market failure can invite ex ante rules, buoyed by the lobbying of regulators and legislators by those in possession of such economic power to achieve outcomes which favour their businesses. Given this systemic, and extra-legal, nature of the reasons as to why the gaps exist, solutions from outside the system are proposed at the end of each case study. *Endorsement* 'This is a richly textured, critically argued work, shedding new light on case studies in information law which require critical thinking. It is both an interesting series of case studies (notably cloud computing, app stores and search) that displays original and deeply researched scholarship and a framework for critiquing neoliberal competition policy from a prosumerist and citizen-oriented perspective.' - Professor Chris Marsden, University of Sussex *Events* I will be giving seminars and talks about the book during January: 9/1/2017 - Power and Identity conference, Graduate Programme on Global Society, University of Tokyo (Japan) 24/1/2017 - Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society seminar, University of Tilburg (NL) 26/1/2017 - Digital Rights and Enforcement panel, Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference, Brussels (Belgium) 31/1/2017 - official book launch and evening reception (reply to me if you are interested in attending), London (UK)

Onteaiken 22 - “Global Labor”: transformations, sensibilities and social conflicts
by Martin Eynard 12 Dec '16

12 Dec '16

Dear AoIR / Air-L members, Greetings from Córdoba, Argentina. It´s a pleasure to share with you our latest edition of the "Boletin ONTEAIKEN", that includes articles around the topics of global labour, transformations, sensibilities and social conflicts, written in collaboration with many members of this community. Please see below and share. Thank you. Best regards, Martin Eynard (PhD) CIECS (CONICET, UNC) *ONTEAIKEN N° 22* *“Global Labor”: transformations, sensibilities and social conflicts* The numerous researches that explain and qualify the transformations of the *“world of work” *over the last twenty years cannot ignore the *"global/ local"* component running through these phenomena. The numerous researches that explain and qualify the transformations of the “world of work” over the last twenty years cannot ignore the "global/ local" component running through these phenomena. Behind this finding we could recognize at least the following relevant features linked to the complexity announced in the emergence of this "metamorphosis": *a-* Firstly, that the understanding of the diverse and complex "global / local" realities of labor require efforts that strain the fragmentation of disciplinary approaches; *b-* In addition, the understanding of the problems associated with the realities of the bodies-that-work (Lisdero) requires linking the transformations of/in the global/local labor world, with the deep metamorphosis of the conditions that shape the subject’s everyday life. *c-* This insight should not leave aside the debate on the implications that the different modes of accumulation cause on inclusion/exclusion/marginalit y and the forms of spoliation of the various and heterogeneous masses of workers. *d-* Finally, it is also important the way in which the global production networks develop concurrently in relation with a sets emergency/latency conflicts that in turn are connected, again, with the aforementioned transformation of the daily lives of thousands of subjects with the current processes of social re-structuring. Such conflicts demand to be understood from a perspective that goes beyond the false antinomy micro-macro that reconfigures dimensions such as space/time or work/leisure/non work, in order to promote a look that re-binds an (undetermined) global logic of the social. Based on the above, and precisely highlighting some of the dimensions that from our perspective are relevant, the new number of Onteaiken aims to bring together a series of articles that problematize the connections between local realities experienced by workers in the framework of global processes. *We invite you to explore Onteaiken 22 (in Spanish)* VISIT OUR WEBSITE <http://estudiosociologicos.dyd.es/newslink/275635/25.html> *ONTEAIKEN *(ISSN 1852-3854) es una iniciativa del "Programa de Estudios sobre Acción Colectiva y Conflicto Social" <http://estudiosociologicos.dyd.es/newslink/275635/13.html> <http://estudiosociologicos.dyd.es/newslink/275635/14.html>

Reminder: CfP: “Media Policy and Digitalization” workshop
by Aske Kammer 12 Dec '16

12 Dec '16

*** Reminder; sorry for cross-posting *** CfP: “Media Policy and Digitalization” workshop at NOPSA 2017 Odense (DK), August 8-11, 2017 The workshop will constitute The 2nd European Symposium on Media Policy. Description: Media policy constitutes a neglected sub-field of political sciences and has, traditionally, been relegated to the realms of media and communication studies. However, since it concerns the structures that support and regulate democracy, freedom of expression, and public participation, and since it is of increasing interest to policy-makers on both national and super-national levels, it is an area that could also be of interest for the political-science community. This workshop proposes an occasion for starting such a conversation and fertilizing the ground for increased integration of media policy in the political sciences. Issues of media policy have become pertinent in recent years as technological and social development reconfigures the object of this policy area. So, the workshop will focus particularly on the challenges that digitalization poses to media policy and the questions that it raises. These challenges include – but are not limited to – (1) how traditional media markets such as broadcasters and the press increasingly converge on digital media, challenging the regulatory frameworks and subsidy systems put in place by policy-makers; (2) how digital intermediaries such as Google and Facebook are central actors in citizens’ media use but transgress the tools of the same policy-makers; and (3) the extent to which one can even distinguish between “media policy” and other policy areas such as cultural policy, policies of infrastructure (telecommunications), and trade/business policy. Workshop format: We emphasize the workshop format of the event, expecting all authors with accepted abstract to submit full papers before the workshop (see timeline below) and act as designated opponents on other authors’ papers (i.e., reading the paper in advance and prepare comments). At the workshop, we will have 45-60 minutes for each paper: 20 minutes for presentation, 10 minutes for comments from the opponent, and 15-30 minutes for general discussion. This format should allow for time to work in-depth with the paper contributions. The workshop will accept a maximum of 15 papers, and we hope to be able to publish the best of them as a special issue. Timeline: January 15, 2017: Deadline for paper proposals. Proposals should have the form of extended abstracts (750 words) and be sent directly to workshop chair Aske Kammer (aska(a)itu.dk) March 15, 2017: Notification of acceptance May 15, 2017: Deadline for Early Bird registration July 15, 2017: Deadline for submission of full papers (send to workshop chair Aske Kammer, aska(a)itu.dk) August 8-11, 2017: Conference Workshop leadership: - Chair: Aske Kammer (The IT University of Copenhagen, aska(a)itu.dk<mailto:aska@itu.dk>) - Vice-chair: Vilde Schanke Sundet (Lillehammer University College, Vilde.Schanke.Sundet(a)hil.no<mailto:Vilde.Schanke.Sundet@hil.no>) Venue: The workshop will be part of the Nordic Political Science Association’s (NoPSA) XVIII Political Science Congress, which will be held at the Department of Political Science and Public Management at the University of Southern Denmark on August 8-11, 2017. [JVWR] Call for Papers: EVE Online - a Special Issue

We welcome contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with virtual worlds' research. Breaking Conventions *EVE Online (EVE)* -- the space-themed massively multiplayer game released in 2003 by CCP Games -- is a game with a reputation. Sometimes referred to as “Excel Online”, *EVE* has also become known as a game with a brutal learning cliff that is hostile to newcomers. And yet, it is also home to vibrant community of long term, dedicated players. In a number of important ways, *EVE* breaks from the conventions of the MMOG genre such as its single shard server, permanent death, robust in-game economy, and pervasive treachery. As a result, much of the research on other MMOGs is not necessarily applicable to this gameworld. Motivation and Scope For much of* EVE*’s history it has received little academic attention. Recent publications, including* Internet Spaceships Are Serious Business* (University of Minnesota Press, 2016), have only just begun to scratch the surface of EVE. This special issue of *Journal of Virtual Worlds Research* will serve as a collection of recent investigations into this MMOG and its community of players. Researchers currently working on EVE-related projects are invited to contribute to this special issue, to be published in Q4 2017. *Suggested topics include but are not limited to:* - The EVE metagame(s) - The history of EVE and/or CCP Games - EVE Online player communities - EVE’s avatar creation tools - Conflict and collaboration - “Fun” or “play” in EVE - EVE’s economy and/or its black/grey markets - Methods for studying EVE - Lessons from EVE Authors are requested to submit an *abstract* of their proposed paper by *May 15, 2017*. Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words (references are not included in this word count). We welcome papers from a variety of disciplines and methodologies, and encourage graduate students to submit their research to this special issue. The guest editors are happy to discuss proposals for contributions, please contact Kelly Bergstrom at *kellybergstrom AT gmail.com <http://gmail.com>* for questions prior to submission. We are also open to alternative formats and shorter pieces such as “tales from the trenches” written from the perspective of players. Please contact the guest editors to discuss ideas for alternative submissions in advance of the abstract deadline. Submission Instructions Interested authors should submit a 500 word abstract by the deadline indicated below. After review by the guest editors, authors will be invited to submit original scholarly papers of up to 5000 words including footnotes, references, and appendices. Longer papers are optional and should be discussed with the issue editors. All submissions (abstracts and papers) should be made via the JVWR publishing system (see www.jvwreserach.org > About JVWR > For Authors). Accepted papers will be published online in the Volume 10, Number 4 (2017) of the Journal. Deadlines and Timeline *May 15, 2017 *- Authors submit abstracts *May 30, 2017 *- Editors return comments on abstracts *July 1, 2017 *- Authors submit full papers *September 1, 2017 *- Review & initial decisions *October 1, 2017 *- Authors submit revised papers *November 1, 2017 - *Final comments and decisions *November 30, 2017 - *Authors submit final versions *December 31, 2017 *- Publication *Review Process:* Abstracts will be considered by the guest editors. Full papers will be reviewed by expert referees using the JVWR *double-open policy*. Re: [Air-L] Fake News
by MC Cambre 10 Dec '16

Instead of fake news, how about disinformation? The partial and/or misleading of unverified events posing as information but tending more towards gossip, scandal and slander, with the intent to polarize debate and damage reputations. Often put forth from behind masked partisan lenses. *** Last Call for Demos and Posters *** 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces IUI 2017 St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus March 13-16, 2017 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Demos The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. All submissions are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and should not be advertisements for commercial software packages. The page limit for demo papers is 4 pages (including references). Accepted demo papers will be published in the companion proceedings in the ACM Digital Library. Posters Posters provide an opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. We invite submissions on all topics of the conference. All submissions should convey a scientific result or work in progress that is not yet ready to be published as a full length research paper at a refereed conference. Submitting a draft poster along with your submission is not required but highly recommended. The page limit for poster papers is 4 pages (including references). Accepted poster papers will appear in the companion proceedings in the ACM Digital Library. Submission Guidelines Demo and poster submissions do not need to be anonymized. The page limit is 4 pages (including references) in HCI extended abstract format (MS Word template, http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi…, LaTeX template, http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi….
