maybe the R package Syuzhet serves your needs: ftp://cran.r-project.org/pub/R/web/packages/syuzhet/vignettes/syuzhet-vigne… It is for free, and it works for tweets, so it should work for FB posts as well. best regards Mauurice Vergeer On Thu, Nov 3, 2016 at 4:06 AM, Andrea.Schlueschen(a)hsba.de < Andrea.Schlueschen(a)hsba.de> wrote: > Hi all, > > can anyone recommend a (free/relatively cheap) tool for short text > sentiment analysis? Sentiment analysis tool for Facebook comments
by Andrea.Schlueschen＠hsba.de 02 Nov '16

Hi all, can anyone recommend a (free/relatively cheap) tool for short text sentiment analysis? I have about 300,000 Facebook comments from various posts and need to find out their valance. Tools like LIWC are unfortunatelly not working since they are created for longer texts. Also, for my PhD project on celebrity endorsement I am currently looking for more people to participate in my survey: www.soscisurvey.de/PostRating So if you have 10 minutes, I would be really grateful if you could click on the link and evaluate four Facebook posts. It helps if you are a bit familiar with U.S. celebrities. (Sorry if this is not the right channel for this kind of request, but I saw a survey on here before, so I hope it is alright!) New Book
by Robyn Longhurst 02 Nov '16

02 Nov '16

Hi everyone A few years ago when I began researching this book I asked list members for suggestions on existing work on Skype and was generously steered in a number of productive directions. Many thanks for this. I thought, therefore that some of you may be interested in the resulting book (even though I am a cultural and social geographer by training rather than an internet researcher). Skype: Bodies, Screens, Space For more information see: https://www.amazon.com/Skype-Bodies-Screens-Robyn-Longhurst/dp/1472434544 About the book: Despite the popularity of Skype with video many of us are still figuring out how to ‘do’ it. Interviews reveal that we can now run the programme but we are less certain about how to ‘perform’ in front of the webcam. Seeing ourselves in the box on the side can feel strange. We are not quite sure which bits of our bodies to display on the screen, how much to move around the room, or move the device around the room. Is it acceptable to use Skype with video at a funeral, in crowded spaces or while in bed? This book addresses how people are emotionally and affectually connecting with others audio-synchronously on the screen in a variety of different spatial contexts. Topics include Skype with video being used by grandparents to connect with grandchildren, friends and family using it for special occasions, and partners using it for romance and sex. Theories addressing bodies, gender, queerness, phenomenology and orientation inform the research. It concludes that while Skype does not offer some kind of utopian future, it does open up possibilities for existing power relations to be filtered through new lines of sight/site which are shaping what bodies can do and where. Best wishes Robyn Longhurst

New Book: Disability Rights Advocacy Online: Voice, Empowerment and Global Connectivity
by Filippo Trevisan 02 Nov '16

02 Nov '16

Hi all, I thought some of you may be interested in my new book, which was just released by Routledge: Disability Rights Advocacy Online: Voice, Empowerment and Global Connectivity <https://www.routledge.com/Disability-Rights-Advocacy-Online-Voice-Empowerme…> About the book: In just a few short years, Internet-based media have revolutionized disability rights advocacy. At a time of crisis, online media fostered a renewed sense of unity in the disability community, starting a process that is continuing today as advocates try to organize the disability vote in the 2016 U.S. election. In the UK, new digitally native organizations have emerged, which challenge traditional ways of thinking about disability advocacy. Young disabled bloggers have become the new faces of the disability movement. In this book, Filippo Trevisan reviews the changes, challenges, and opportunities that led to these transformations, discussing their significance for the disability community and other progressive movements that seek to spark social change. Suggestions for readings on web decentralization?
by Emma Stamm 02 Nov '16

02 Nov '16

Hello all, I'm a first-year PhD student in an interdisciplinary humanities/social sciences program. One of my research interests is the history of initiatives, ideas and theoretical rationale for decentralizing the Internet. To that end, I'm wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of readings that address this subject — scholarly articles and books are excellent, although more informal sources are welcome, as well. I am specifically familiar with the possibility of using blockchain technology to decentralize/distribute the web, a very current idea. While this and other proposed "Web 3.0" developments are interesting to me, right now I am specifically focusing on historical predecessors that underscore the visionary potential (and possible pitfalls) of the notion of a decentralized/distributed web. Thank you so much! All the best, Emma *Emma Stamm, MS* *PhD student, ASPECT Virginia Tech* *www.realyou.me <http://www.realyou.me> | @turing_tests*
