CFP for #ttw17
by David Banks 02 Nov '16

02 Nov '16

Hi Everyone! It's that time of year again! Hope to see lots of familiar faces and some new ones! -db Call for Papers *Theorizing the Web 2017* *April 7–8 in New York City* At the Museum of the Moving Image, in Astoria, Queens The submission deadline is January 22, 2017 (11:59 p.m. EST) Started in 2011, Theorizing the Web is an annual event for critical, conceptual conversations about technology and society. Theorizing the Web begins with the assumption that to talk about technology is also to discuss the self and the social world. Debate around digital social technologies too often fails to apply the many relevant literatures of social thought. We do not think “theorizing” is solely the domain of academia, and we value clear and compelling arguments that avoid jargon. Here are some photos from last year’s event if you want to see the vibe of it all. Theorizing the Web is a home for thinking about technology by people who may not think of themselves primarily as “tech” thinkers. Activists, journalists, technologists, writers, artists, and people who don’t identify as any of the above are all encouraged to submit. We especially invite submissions that engage with issues of social justice, power, inequality, and vulnerability from a diverse range of perspectives. Submissions on any topic are welcome. Some general topical suggestions include the intersections between technology and identity, privacy, sexuality, the body, power, politics, surveillance, racism, sexism, ableism, harassment, space, code, design, knowledge, images, memes, attention, work, fiction, gaming, globalization, capitalism, and protest. Submissions should be 300 to 500 words (only the first 500 words will be reviewed). The TtW Selection Committee will blindly review submissions and make decisions in early to mid-February. Space is limited, and our acceptance rate is typically 20-35%. The presentations themselves will be 12-minute talks in a panel setting. You will be speaking to a general audience who may not share your area of expertise. Before submitting, please read our FAQ section on submissions <http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/2017/about#faqsubmit>. Submit your proposal here: http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/2017/submit Registration for Theorizing the Web remains pay-what-you-can, and we ask that you donate whatever amount you deem fair or can afford (minimum $1). Register here: http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/2017/registration Stay tuned to theorizingtheweb.org for announcements about invited panels, and email us at theorizingtheweb(a)gmail.com <http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/2017/cfp#mce_temp_url#> if you would like to help out with our all-volunteer event in any way. We’re @TtW_conf <https://twitter.com/ttw_conf> on Twitter, and the conference hashtag is #TtW17. xx -- -db

CfP: SIEF2017 - Mediating everyday life: dwelling in a digital age
by Christian Ritter 02 Nov '16

02 Nov '16

*Apologies for Cross-Posting* Dear colleagues, We would like to call your attention to our panel session at the SIEF conference in Göttingen, Germany. Many thanks for your consideration, we hope to see you there! Kind regards, Christian and Michael Call for Papers International Society for Ethnology and Folklore bi-annual congress, March 23-26 2017, Göttingen. Please send proposals by November 7th at midnight. To submit a proposal to the panel please follow this link<http://nomadit.co.uk/sief/sief2017/panels.php5?PanelID=5074>. Panel Session: Mediating everyday life: dwelling in a digital age Convenors - Christian Ritter (Istanbul Studies Center, Kader Has University) - Michael Humbracht (University of Surrey) Panel Short Abstract This panel addresses the interrelations between travel and dwelling practices among people on the move. We seek to better understand the mutual shaping of dwelling-in-travel and traveling-in-dwelling by comparing various ethnographic accounts of home-making practices. Panel Long Abstract This panel addresses the interplay between travel and dwelling practices among people on the move. The ubiquitous use of networked computers in homes transformed everyday lives. Digital technology has both opened up windows to entertainment, education, gossip, and networking while also ushering in new forms of surveillance that control everyday routines. Digital media connect remote people and places: we explore virtual travel and mooring in concert to unveil the everyday practices involved in the various uses of digital media at the intersections of traveling and dwelling. Specific everyday practices, tactics and histories revolve around dwelling and traveling (Clifford 1992). Dwelling-in-travel may include practices of homing that draw on decorative objects, cuisines, rituals and festivals. Travel-in-dwelling refers to the use of internet technologies, television, radio, phones and remote gift exchange while staying in a shelter. The increasing circulation of people, objects, ideas and capital are anchored in (ephemeral) dwelling practices in private and public settings. This panel focuses on these practices and materialities of dwelling. Hotels, tents, refugee camps, night trains and recreational vehicles contain multiple stories of delayed travel, aspired destinations, routes, despair and stillness, which ethnographers can bring to light. Instead of artificially separating dwelling-in-travel and traveling-in-dwell, this panel seeks to more comprehensively understand the mutual shaping of both sets of practices. We welcome ethnographic accounts and theoretical papers on mobile people, including expatriates, refugees, exiles, long-distance commuters and life style travellers. How do digital technologies transform their practices of home-making? Which dwelling practices do they develop? The paper proposal should include: - title - name/s and email addresses of author/s - short abstract of fewer than 300 characters - long abstract of fewer than 250 words

Game Studies: The International Journal of Computer Game Research has just published its latest issue (Volume 16, Issue 1, October 2016). All articles are available at www.gamestudies.org/1601<http://www.gamestudies.org/1601> Editorial The Battle for Open Access Publishing - And how it affects YOU<http://gamestudies.org/1601/articles/oa> by Espen Aarseth There is an ongoing battle for the heart and soul of open-access publishing. And it is not going well. Articles Game Sound in the Mechanical Arcades: An Audio Archaeology<http://gamestudies.org/1601/articles/collins> by Karen Collins This paper provides an "audio archaeology" of the penny arcades, exploring the uses of sound in the electro-mechanical era of games. Is Every Indie Game Independent? Towards the Concept of Independent Game<http://gamestudies.org/1601/articles/gardagrabarczyk> by Maria B. Garda, Paweł Grabarczyk We argue that "indie game" is a distinct narrow notion within a wider concept of "independent game". The latter can be explained as a disjunction of three types of independence (financial, creative and publishing) and it is associated, in a given historical period, with different contingent properties determined by the game culture of the era. Regional Game Studies<http://gamestudies.org/1601/articles/liboriussen> by Bjarke Liboriussen, Paul Martin Game studies is undergoing a regional turn marked by an increase in research conducted in and focussed on areas outside of Western Europe and North America. The development of "regional game studies" will extend the field's ability to engage with important global issues and enrich game studies with new perspectives and concepts. The Vitruvian Thumb: Embodied Branding and Lateral Thinking with the Nintendo Game Boy<http://gamestudies.org/1601/articles/reynolds> by Daniel Reynolds Describes a confluence of forces that shaped the development of the Nintendo Game Boy. Argues that the Game Boy exemplifies a relationship between technologists, media technology, and users. Encourages theorists to consider the bodily and other material constraints that inform the development of media platforms. It took a few days for video to emerge of last week's Georgia Tech event, and when it did the audio wasn't so good. I have cleaned it up to the best of my ability and added some titles. There was a technical problem with the render earlier in the day (PC crash!) which belayed the 7pm time, and I now expect to stream this around 2am EDT = 06:00 UTC. It's a good session. Two parts - first Milton and Larry. Then the panel, with some penetrating questions from the student body. joly posted: "On Friday October 28 2016 the New America Foundation Cybersecurity Initiative presented Cyber Insecurity: Emerging Policy Tools in Cybersecurity in Washington DC. Four year research grants in Norway
by Jill Walker Rettberg 01 Nov '16

01 Nov '16

Dear young scholars (40 or younger with a PhD in hand), Bergen Research Foundation and the University of Bergen invites applications for four year grants for young scholars. You must have a PhD completed, and you must be 40 years old or younger (this can be extended for documented parental leave or long-term illness). This is a four-year research-only position where the recipients of the grant lead a small project group (typically you would get a couple of PhD students to work on your project and whom you would supervise, plus you would have funding for workshops, travel, research stays abroad, bringing people in etc) and the grant *may* lead to a tenured full-time professorship, although there are conditions attached. We would love to have a BSF grant in Digital Culture, and I am sure there are excellent young scholars on this list who would be perfect candidates. If you would be interested in living in Norway, a country with free health care, free tuition, great parental leave and heavily subsidised childcare, and have an idea for a research project that might fit in this scheme, please get in touch with me at jill.walker.rettberg(a)uib.no<mailto:jill.walker.rettberg@uib.no>. It does require you to have (or be able to develop before the deadline) a well-worked out research project plan and to have a CV that shows you are an excellent young scholar with promise. It’s not a completely open call, you need to be nominated by the department as the department would be putting money in, so you would need to get in touch with me (or another professor at UiB), then we can talk about it, and then I will need to talk my head of department into supporting the application. Here is last year’s call: http://bfstiftelse.no/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/BFS-Call2016.pdf This year’s call will be formally announced in December. The deadline will be in March. Do get in touch if you are interested - it’d be useful if you would send me a paragraph explaining your research interest/idea for a project, along with a CV or link to an online CV. CFP SIEF: a (fun!) panel in Germany on digital ethnography and related methods (deadline Nov 7)
by RGH 31 Oct '16

31 Oct '16

Hello All: Coppélie Cocq and I invite submissions to our panel on "Digitally dwelling: the challenges of digital ethnology and folklore and the methods to overcome them.” This panel is sponsored by the new working group for Digital Ethnography and Folklore at the The International Society for Ethnology and Folklore in Göttingen, Germany. More on SIEF here: http://www.siefhome.org/about.shtml I will paste a bit more on the panel below, but anybody doing work on digital ethnography or related digital methods would be super welcomed. If we have enough people, we can do a full day session at the conference and spend the rest of the time checking out other great stuff. The SIEF is always a great experience and a great excuse to go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Göttingen Email me if you have any questions! Papers must be proposed via the website: http://nomadit.co.uk/sief/sief2017/panels.php5?PanelID=4993 General information on the conference: http://www.siefhome.org/congresses/sief2017/index.shtml See abstract below, and see you in Göttingen! Rob Digitally dwelling: the challenges of digital ethnology and folklore and the methods to overcome them What does it mean to "dwell" in a digital community? Or inhabit a network location? Do we dwell together as we access different apps on the bus to work? Or do we dwell together in the synthetic spaces inside a virtual reality helmet? Participants in this panel will offer specific cases of challenges they faced dwelling in digital cultures and explore methodical fixes that attempt to address them. The pace at which the manifold uses of the internet and of other digital and mobile technologies are constantly evolving means that the nature of the digital worlds we inhabit together are always changing. In this environment of constant change, the researcher is always being presented with new challenges to the perspectives, methods and tools they have used before. The omnipresence and intensification of the digital challenge our perceptions of localities, presence and encounters. As a consequence, methods for online research need to redefine concepts such as the "field" and fieldwork, participant observation, interaction, etc. This panel will investigate methods in research on digital culture, digital practices and the impact and the implications of the digital in our lives by asking participants to present specific cases of problems they have faced in their digital research and the fixes they developed to address whether successful or not! We invite contributions approaching methods and methodologies in digital folklore and ethnology. Topics can include for example, but not only: - Collection and fabrication of data - Big and small data - Ethics - Ethnography Robert Glenn Howard http://rghoward.com _______________________________ University of Wisconsin -- Madison Director, Digital Studies & DesignLab Professor, Department of Communication Arts Affiliated Faculty Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Culture Religious Studies Program Robert F. & Jean E.
