Call for Papers: ICA 2017 Preconference
by Anna Litvinenko 07 Nov '16

07 Nov '16

Dear administrator, I would like to kindly ask you to include our Call for Papers for the ICA 2017 Preconference in the ECREA-Mailing list (please find the posting below). Thank you very much in advance! With best wishes, Anna Litvinenko, PhD Institute for Media and Communications Studies FU Berlin Garystrasse 55 14195 Berlin Office: +49-30-838-55448 Mobile: +49-1578-5352927 POSTING: Call for Papers: ICA 2017 Preconference The Consequences of the Internet for Authoritarian Politics: Comparative Perspectives Time & Venue Date: May 25, 2017 Time: 9 am - 5 pm Location: San Diego Hilton Bayfront (onsite, conference hotel of the ICA annual conference 2017) Rationale Over the past decade, a vibrant body of academic literature has emerged on the political consequences of the Internet for non-democratic politics. However, the majority of extant studies have focused on phenomena of political communication in one authoritarian regime only. By contrast, very few studies have aimed at comparing empirical findings from across different authoritarian contexts. Against this backdrop, this preconference explicitly aims at providing a forum for scholars from across the globe to discuss, and develop, comparative perspectives on the consequences of the Internet for authoritarian politics. In order to pursue this goal, we have invited a number of well-respected scholars in the field to contribute to the event. Invited speakers include Muzammil Hussain (University of Michigan, USA), Paolo Mancini (University of Perugia, Italy), Sarah Oates (University of Maryland, USA), and Katrin Voltmer (University of Leeds). In order to supplement the preconference program, we would like to invite at least three types of additional submissions. Firstly, we explicitly welcome submissions that compare empirical data across different authoritarian contexts. Secondly, we are also interested in papers that present empirical findings from only one country, but that, at the theoretical level, explicitly aim at embedding them into a wider regional or global context. Such theoretically informed comparisons can be achieved, for instance, by referring to the lively recent debates around new types of responsive and competitive authoritarianism, or to the literature on authoritarian institutions. As a third type of submission, we also invite purely theoretical contributions. Moreover, as a number of scholars have recently lamented, extant research on the conference topic has largely focused on either how oppositional activists leverage new digital tools to challenge authoritarian rule or how authoritarian elites suppress and censor online dissent. Against this backdrop, we are particularly keen to also discuss questions around how authoritarian elites pro-actively deploy the Internet to expand their communicative power. Why, how, and with what consequences, for instance, do authoritarian leaders across the globe reach out to their citizens via social networks? Why do they open up virtual participatory spaces that host, for example, online polls, online petitions, or virtual deliberative forums? The topic of the preconference is situated at the intersection of two divisions of the ICA, the Political Communication and the Global Communication & Social Change divisions, which are cosponsoring the event. At a more abstract level, a key goal of the preconference is thus also to bring together scholars from these two communities, encouraging intellectual exchange across manifold disciplinary and methodological borders. Participants who would not like to contribute but would still like to attend the event are welcome to sign up on the ICA registration website as audience members. The participation fee, which is being charged to cover the two coffee breaks, is 50 USD. The conference is organized by the Emmy Noether research group "Mediating (Semi-)Authoritarianism: The Power of the Internet in the Post-Soviet World," of Freie Universitaet Berlin. All news regarding the conference, including its finalized program, will be published on the research group's website, <http://www.mediating-authoritarianism.net/ica-2017-pre-conference/> http://www.mediating-authoritarianism.net/ica-2017-pre-conference/. For additional information, please contact Anna Litvinenko ( <mailto:anna.litvinenko@fu-berlin.de> anna.litvinenko(a)fu-berlin.de) or Florian Toepfl ( <mailto:f.toepfl@fu-berlin.de> f.toepfl(a)fu-berlin.de) Please email submissions - which can be of any format, from extended abstracts (800 words) to full papers (up to 10,000 words in length) - to our student assistant Daria Kravets ( <mailto:daria.kravets@fu-berlin.de)> daria.kravets(a)fu-berlin.de) The deadline for submission is December 11, 2016. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out before January 1, 2017.

REMINDER CFP: Audience research into documentary and related media
by Craig Hight 07 Nov '16

07 Nov '16

(Apologies for cross-posting) REMINDER: abstracts due Nov 30th CFP: Participations: Journal of Audience & Reception Studies Special Issue: Audience research into documentary and related media Expected Publication Date: November 2017 (Vol . 14, Issue 2) Co-Editors: Craig Hight (University of Newcastle, AU); Kate Nash (University of Leeds, UK) Participations is the online Journal devoted to the broad field of audience and reception studies. It aims to bring into dialogue work and debate across all fields involved in examining all areas of media and culture. Participations has pioneered a system of open refereeing for all contributions, designed to encourage open, critical debate among researchers. It can be found at www.participations.org<http://www.participations.org/>. Call for Papers Despite a long established and rich literature on documentary cinema and television, there is still comparatively little research which addresses issues in the reception of the range of content which might fall within the umbrella label of 'documentary media'. This label encompasses celebrated exemplars in cinematic and televisual forms and more recently includes forms ranging across other media, and depending on who is defining the nature of documentary culture, includes everything from photography, drama-documentary, documentary animation (documation), hybrid televisual formats, online and interactive forms, and even documentary comics . Documentary proper has tended, especially within film theory, to draw from an assumed distinctive relationship which audience have with mediations of reality. However, the complexity of forms which draw their rhetorical and affective power from documentary aesthetics and the assumptions they appear to engender is proliferating. Documentary, in its exemplars, assumes a knowing, reflective and literate audience. Other documentary-related forms are driven by more obviously entertainment-centred agendas. How do differently situated audiences negotiate this part of the contemporary mediascape? The aim of this issue is to bring together work which interrogates from the side of reception how documentary is evolving, the implications of the proliferation of documentary and related forms, and the complexities inherent to how viewers of these forms are negotiating their meaning. Possible questions to be addressed might include: 1. What can audience research tell us about the nature of documentary and related media? 1. How can we characterise the nature, characteristics and contradictions of documentary engagement? 2. How do audiences define ‘documentary’ ? 4. Are there different modes of reading associated with different media forms within the spectrum of documentary and related media? 1. How do audiences understand the nature of ethical practice within documentary and related forms? 2. How do audiences make use of social and political knowledge represented through documentary forms? 7. How do viewers / users assess the nature and integrity of evidence presented in documentary and related forms? 1. Is the notion of indexicality still relevant for contemporary audiences? 9. How do viewers read documation (animated documentary)? 10. How important are paratextual material (including online commentaries), to documentary reception? 11. How do viewers / users assess the issue of ‘performance’ in documentary and related media 12. How do audiences read mockumentary? 1. How does involvement in video-making and similar amateur pursuits change perceptions of documentary as a form? 14. How do audience understand how documentaries and related media are categorised and made ‘findable’ through digital distribution channels? 1. How do interactive technologies enhance, or problematize forms of engagement assumed with documentary forms? Manuscripts can cover various media (e.g. cinema, television, theatre, podcasts, photography, online and interactive forms, apps, games, comics, etc.). The editors welcome theoretical essays as well as empirical studies from various methodologies. Please send a 250 word abstract to craig.hight(a)newcastle.edu.au<mailto:craig.hight@newcastle.edu.au> by November 30, 2016. Please title the email “Participations Special Issue – your last name.” DEADLINES Abstracts Due: November 30 2016 Decisions to Authors: December 30 2016 Full submissions: June 1 2017 Final drafts: September 1 2017 Publication: November 2017 Please see the submission guidelines for the journal http://www.participations.org/submission_guidelines.htm

No cash, no intermediaries? Different scenarios for a digital economy What happens when a culture of primarily cash-based and mediated financial transactions encounters the world of digital financial platforms that promise cashless and direct transactions? In a world abuzz with conversations about digital financial transactions, we explore how they work among different low-income social groups in a one-day workshop on November 11, 2016 at IIIT-Bangalore. The workshop comprises three panels spread over the day. It will bring together diverse voices on digital financial transactions, who have earlier engaged with these issues on separate stages, to discuss changes in the nature of financial transactions. Together, we will explore possible ways to rethink cash-less and intermediary-free economies, and examine how best to incorporate the values associated with cash and financial intermediaries into the world of digital financial transactions.
