Reminder: Production in Media and Journalism - Call for Papers
by Jernej Amon Prodnik 12 Nov '16

12 Nov '16

Dear all, I would again like to kindly invite you to submit abstracts for a thematic issue of open-access journal Media Research / Medijska Istrazivanja entitled Production in Media and Journalism (2017, Vol. 23, No. 2). Please see more information on the call below, abstracts are due 15th of November 2016. My apologies for cross-posting. Best regards, Jernej Amon Prodnik Media Research / Medijska istraživanja CALL FOR PAPERS Thematic Issue (2017, Vol. 23, No. 2): Production in Media and Journalism Editor-in-Chief: Nada Zgrabljić Rotar (University of Zagreb, Croatia) Guest Editors: Igor Vobič & Jernej Amon Prodnik (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) Scope of the Thematic Issue: Open-access journal Media Research / Medijska istraživanja invites contributions for its themed issue entitled Production in Media and Journalism (2017, vol. 23, n. 2). The issue will be published in the second part of 2017 and will focus on different facets of the production process in media industries, particularly journalism production chain, and concurring relations of production in this sphere – from more general issues, such as structural embeddedness of production in capitalism and its implications for social communication and/or legitimation of the existing social relations, to more specific questions, for example paradoxes of labour division in newsrooms and normalization of precarity in journalistic community, occupational ideology, and issues connected to automatisation. Even though production is not a completely ignored topic in media and communication studies, it often remains under-represented and under-researched in comparison to other moments in the accumulation process of media industries. We invite contributions based in critical approaches, chiefly in political economy of communication, but not limited to it. As the sphere of production encompasses a variety of relations and issues, our aim is a thematically rich issue, which will put a deliberate emphasis on theoretically and historically strong contributions that are not shy of asking general questions regarding media and journalism in capitalist society. The journal invites contributions assessing one or more of the following topics: - Specifics of media and journalism production within general relations of production - The role of media and journalism production in reproduction of capitalist social relations - (Ir)relevance of the base and superstructure model for the research of media in capitalism - Changing forces of production in media and technological changes affecting production process - Information sources and reproduction of power through journalism production (e.g. international press agencies, unnamed sources, routine sources) - Convergence between production and consumption in media and journalism - Production of audiences, audiences’ production - Changes in physical production of media and communication technologies - Labour(ers) in media industries’ production chains - Dilemmas of automatisation and algorithms in media and journalistic production - Precarious labour in journalism and occupational ideology Timetable: Submission of abstracts of 300-400 words and author’s details: 15th of November 2016 Notification of abstract acceptance: 15th of December 2016 Full manuscript of 6000-7000 words submission: 1st of May 2017 Results of double blind peer reviews: 1st of July 2017 Revised and proofread papers submission: 15th of September 2017 Final notification of acceptance: 15th of October 2017 All abstract submissions should be sent to guest editors Igor Vobič (igor.vobic(a)fdv.uni-lj.si) and Jernej Amon Prodnik (jernej.amon-prodnik(a)fdv.uni-lj.si) Journal Media Research / Medijska istraživanja (ISSN: 1330-6928 (Print), 1846-6605 (Online)) is indexed in Sociological Abstracts (SA), Linguistic and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA), Social Planning/Policy & Development Abstracts (SOPODA), Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) and in SCOPUS.

Lesson plans for teaching for a peaceful, diverse world that is safe for everyone
by Jill Walker Rettberg 12 Nov '16

12 Nov '16

Dear all, After the US elections I am sure many of us, whereever we live, are thinking about how to plan next semester’s teaching so that it helps equip the next generation to deal with an increasingly frightening world. Within internet research, some obvious topics we can discuss are things like polarisation of polticial views, filter bubbles, algorithmic news filtering and the increasing spread of fake news. More generally, we can design activities that foster critical thinking, empathy, understanding of people who are not like oneself, and relate this to technology/internet/media. Maybe this would also be a good time to bring discussions of pre-internet media and technology and their role in the years before WW2, or even earlier dangerous times, and to compare this to social media etc today? I don’t yet have very clear ideas about this, but I would love to share ideas with other internet researchers who teach and who want to do the best we can in our teaching to counteract the racism, sexism, hatred, distrust of government and of others, and general division that is not only affecting the USA but obviously Europe and other parts of the world as well. I know many of us already teach these things, but maybe not in as focused a way as I think we may need to do in future? Or maybe the resources I’m longing for already exist? If you have ideas, please share them! If this is something several of us are interested in, we could set up a syllabus/Google doc / Facebook group or something. I’m thinking case studies with readings and lesson plans would be a really useful resource and might be a way we could do some good in all this. CfP Gaming Disability: Disability perspectives on contemporary video games
by Mike Kent 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

Call for Papers: Gaming Disability: Disability perspectives on contemporary video games Edited by Dr Katie Ellis, Dr Mike Kent & Dr Tama Leaver Internet Studies, Curtin University Abstracts Due 15 February 2017 Video games are a significant and still rapidly expanding area of popular culture. Media Access Australia estimated that in 2012 some twenty percent of gamers were people with a disability, yet, the relationship between video gaming, online gaming and disability is an area that until now has been largely under explored. This collection seeks to fill that gap. We are looking for scholars from both disability studies and games studies, along with game developers and innovators and disability activists and other people with interest in this area to contribute to this edited collection. We aim to highlight the history of people with disabilities participating in video games and explore the contemporary gaming environment as it relates to disability. This exploration takes place in the context of the changing nature of gaming, particularly the shift from what we might consider traditional desktop computer mediation onto mobile devices and augmented reality platforms. The collection will also explore future possibilities and pitfalls for people with disabilities and gaming. Areas of interest that chapters might address include * Disability narratives and representation in gaming * Accessibility of gaming for people with disabilities * Mods, hacks and alterations to games and devices for and by people with disabilities * Augmented reality games and disability * Disability gaming histories * Mobile gaming platforms and disability * Specific design elements (such as sound) in terms of designing accessible games * Gaming, television and disability * Future directions for disability and gaming Submission procedure: Potential authors are invited to submit chapter abstracts of no more than 500 words, including a title, 4 to 6 keywords, and a brief bio, by email to Dr Mike Kent <m.kent(a)curtin.edu.au> by 15 February 2017. (Please indicate in your proposal if you wish to use any visual material, and how you have or will gain copyright clearance for visual material.) Authors will receive a response by 15 March 2016, with those provisionally accepted due as chapters of approximately 6000 words (including references) by 15 June 2016. If you would like any further information, please contact Mike Kent. About the editors: The editors are all from the Department of Internet Studies at Curtin University and have a history of successfully publishing edited collections in the areas of and gaming, disability, and new media. Dr Katie Ellis is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Internet Studies at Curtin University. Her research focuses on disability and the media extending across both representation and active possibilities for social inclusion. Her books include Disability and New Media (2011 with Mike Kent), Disabling Diversity (2008), Disability, Ageing and Obesity: Popular Media Identifications (2014; with Debbie Rodan & Pia Lebeck), Disability and the Media (2015; with Gerard Goggin), Disability and Popular Culture (2015) and her recent edited collection with Mike Kent Disability and Social Media: Global Perspectives (2017). Dr Mike Kent is a senior lecturer and Head of Department in the Department of Internet Studies at Curtin University. Mike's research focus is on people with disabilities and their use of, and access to, information communication technology and the Internet. His other area of research interest is in higher education and particularly online education, as well as online social networking platforms. His book, with Katie Ellis, Disability and New Media was published in 2011 and his edited collection, with Tama Leaver, An Education in Facebook? Higher Education and the World's Largest Social Network, was released in 2014. His latest edited collection, with Katie Ellis, Disability and Social Media: Global Perspectives is available 2017, along with his forthcoming edited collections Massive Open Online Courses and Higher Education: What went right, what went wrong and where to now, with Rebecca Bennett and Chinese Social Media Today: Critical Perspectives with Katie Ellis and Jian Xu. New Ph.D. Program in Technology Management and Organization Studies at UC Santa Barbara
by Yosem Companys 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

From: Paul Leonardi <leonardi(a)tmp.ucsb.edu> The University of California, Santa Barbara is pleased to announce the launch of a new Ph.D. DEGREE in Technology Management. Applications are due January 15, 2017 for matriculation in Fall 2017. This new program is administered by UCSB’s Technology Management Program (located in UCSB’s top-ranked College of Engineering), whose internationally-renowned faculty include: Steve Barley Gary Hansen Paul Leonardi Kyle Lewis John Mohr Dave Seibold Ambuj Singh Bob York *Why Pursue a Ph.D. in Technology Management?* Scholars who study technology, innovation, and organizing are in great demand across many fields including business, information studies, communication, sociology and engineering. Yet most disciplinary-based programs, be they in the social sciences or in engineering schools, do not train Ph.D. students with the right mix of skills to understand both the organizational and technological aspects of work. The Ph.D. Program in Technology Management fills this void. *Is a Ph.D. in Technology Management the right fit for you?* We seek students who want to become exceptional scholars and who will go on to research and teach at top universities across the country and around the world. You would fit our program well if you are interested in technology-related work regardless of whether you have a background in the social sciences, physical sciences, management or engineering. Our program integrates organizational studies with technology and innovation studies in an interdisciplinary environment that transcends the distinctions between disciplines. If you come from a technology or scientific background we will teach you about the importance of organizations and social systems. If you have a social science or management background you will learn to understand the role of technology and innovation in shaping organizational action. *Where can our Ph.D. take you?* The job market for interdisciplinary Ph.Ds. with training in technology and organizations is expected to be strong over the next decade. We anticipate that most graduates will pursue academic positions in Business Schools (where the study of technology innovation and entrepreneurship is growing), Schools of Communication (where the study of organization and technology is increasing swiftly), in Schools of Information (which are being rapidly founded across the country), and in Schools of Engineering (that are increasingly interested in the social aspects of technical work). Unlike the demand for Ph.D. tenure track faculty in many other disciplines, the number of tenure track openings in these schools exceeds the number of Ph.Ds. awarded each year, and that gap is increasing. *Why UCSB? * UCSB is world renowned for its interdisciplinary culture, which encourages collaboration across disciplinary boundaries and exciting new interdisciplinary fields and programs. Our *faculty* <https://tmp.ucsb.edu/faculty> is world renowned for its commitment to interdisciplinarity; we have backgrounds that range from engineering and management to the social sciences. Our Ph.D. students are encouraged to explore courses and to make links to faculty in the social sciences, environmental science, and other engineering departments. The Technology Management Program is housed in the *College of Engineering, *which ranked as number one in the world among public universities for engineering research. The National Research Council ranks all of UCSB's College of Engineering research programs among the top five for their disciplines. *Learn more about this new Ph.D. Program here*: https://tmp.ucsb.edu/phd For more information about the Ph.D. Program, please contact Paul Leonardi ( leonardi(a)tmp.ucsb.edu) or Kyle Lewis (klewis(a)tmp.ucsb.edu) Thank you for forwarding this announcement to prospective students. ____________________________________________________________ ___________________________ Paul Leonardi Duca Family Professor of Technology Management Investment Group of Santa Barbara Founding Director, Master of Technology Management (MTM) Program University of California, Santa Barbara +1.805.893.5414 leonardi(a)tmp.ucsb.edu http://www.tmp.ucsb.edu/leonardi

Good modern Endnote Harvard style
by David Brake 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

To my astonishment, none of the Endnote Harvard style files I have been able to find are up-to-date to, for example, display DOI information for journal articles or web addresses for reports (consistent with, for example, http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm <http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm>). The most “modern" Harvard style file I have been able to find is this one: http://guides.is.uwa.edu.au/ld.php?content_id=25492064 I’ve tried “Sage Harvard”, “Harvard”, “HarvardHWU”, “UQHarvard2002”, “Harvardam4a”, “UWA_Harvard”... Can anyone suggest a better Harvard style file? Am I right in thinking that there is no universally agreed-upon Harvard style as there is with APA? New Book Series: Materializing the Digital
by Adam Fish 11 Nov '16

11 Nov '16

Dear AOIR, I'd like to invite interested parties to submit to us their book ideas for our new series, Materializing the Digital. Materializing the Digital seeks to interrogate the infrastructures, relationships and imaginaries of digital technologies through situated, empirical analyses of the production, circulation and use of digital devices and systems. Series Editors: Hannah Knox, University College London and Adam Fish, Lancaster University Positioned at the intersection of media studies, STS, anthropology and sociology, the series will provide original, critical and theoretically innovative understandings of the implications of digital technologies for contemporary social life. Our intention is that this series will provide a solid ground from which to engage and critique the persistence of utopian, functionalist and dystopic visions of technological futures. We are particularly looking for projects that: attend to the specific processes by which digital technologies are produced, circulated and used; analyze the nature of the infrastructures that digital systems rely on, and the unforeseen material consequences and effects of digital technologies (e.g. e-waste); draw attention to materiality is to broaden the usual focus of ‘media’ (i.e. text and representation) to include issues like signal, transmission and storage; interrogate the interplay between material processes and social dynamics; present theoretically informed ethnographic monographs that detail the social, material and cultural relationships that structure the production and circulation of digital media. Proposal Guidelines: To submit a proposal, please complete the MUP proposal form: Proposal Form PDF Send completed proposal forms to Tom Dark, senior commissioning editor at tom.dark(a)manchester.ac.uk For more information about the review process, please click here: Review Process Forthcoming books: Memory ecologies by Mél Hogan (coming September 2017) Best, Dr. Adam Fish Senior Lecturer, Sociology, Lancaster University +44 (0)1524 592699 adamfish(a)protonmail.ch @mediacultures Disclaimer: This communication may be monitored and collected without consent in secret by the NSA and GCHQ.
