E-Voting
by Yosem Companys 14 Nov '16

14 Nov '16

From: Zacharia Gichiriri <zacharia.gichiriri(a)strathmore.edu> Are there any countries that have implemented a form of mobile voting? Is there any research on the potential, challenges and applicability of mobile voting? Considering the explosive growth of mobile phones across Africa, would the use of mobile phones for elections (citizens voting through mobile phones) improve election outcomes and transparency? Best, -- Zack.

Call for the ICA 2017 Pre-Conference "Data and the Future of Critical Social Research"
by Andreas Hepp 14 Nov '16

14 Nov '16

Call for the ICA 2017 Pre-Conference "Data and the Future of Critical Social Research" Sponsored by the Philosophy, Theory and Critique Division of the International Communication Association Event date: 25 May 2017, 9:00 AM - 5 PM, San Diego, California, USA Deadline for proposals: January 15th, 2017 (500 words abstract) Organisers: Nick Couldry (London School of Economics) and Andreas Hepp (University of Bremen) What we call media and mediated communication is more and more interwoven with processes of datafication in an environment of continuous and largely automated data-gathering, for example, from our activities online or our mobile phone use. The uses of data collected, aggregated and analysed by systems of computers are today a precondition for everyday life. In short, data are changing social ontology, and as a result the role of 'media' within the constitution of the social. This can be understood as part of a process of 'deep' mediatization (Couldry and Hepp 2016) - in which the very elements and building-blocks from which social is constructed are based in processes of mediation, accompanied by automated data processing. In this transformed context, this pre-conference asks: What do such changes mean for critical communications and social research - indeed for critical social theory and informed political action generally? How should we now do critical empirical research into media and communications bearing this deep mediatization in mind? The pre-conference aims both to focus these questions theoretically and to encourage perspectives on what constitutes critical empirical research under such conditions. Questions on which we welcome either theoretical or empirical contributions include: • What sort of economic, political and social order is being built through today’s data relations and their underlying linked infrastructures? • How are the self's relations to institutional power changing through digital traces, data relations and with implications for autonomy and freedom? • How is the nature of social institutions changing through deep mediatization and the pervasiveness of data relations? • Are practices of civic and political intervention for social change on balance stimulated or undermined in a datafied environment? • What does community and other forms of collectivity come to mean under these new datafied conditions? • How should we develop our methods for a critical analysis of processes of deep mediatization? • What kind of social interventions are needed that build from critical analyses of datafication? Please email a 500 words proposals to Andreas Hepp (andreas.hepp(a)uni-bremen.de) by January 15th, 2017. Please direct any questions to: Nick Couldry (n.couldry(a)lse.ac.uk) or Andreas Hepp (andreas.hepp(a)uni-bremen.de) --- Prof. Dr. Andreas Hepp Twitter: @Andreas_Hepp NEW BOOK: N. Couldry & A. Workshop research ethics 29.11. at Utrecht University
by Mirko Tobias Schaefer 14 Nov '16

14 Nov '16

What: The Utrecht University's Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON) in cooperation with Utrecht Data School (UDS) is organizing a workshop on Research Ethics for Data and Digital Methods. The workshop will take place on 29 th of November 2016 in the Sweelinckzaal from 10a.m - 5p.m. Why: New data resources and novel tools for analysis provide opportunities and challenges for researchers. The use of social media in research practices, or the disputed Facebook study, the leaked Ashley Madison data set or the Cablegate database are only few of many example that pressure researchers to revisit research ethics. In response to the changing practices for collecting and (re)using data for research, this workshop will revisit ethical standards for researchers. Speakers from the field of ethics in general and from the field of data research and digital humanities in particular will kick-start our discussion on various ‘ethical minefields’ and how to apply ethical guidelines. For whom: You are interested in research ethics, digital methods, digital humanities and using data, social media or web platforms for your research, this workshop is for you. If you use any kind of data for your Ph.D. or post-doctoral research, and if you face questions of research ethics, you are warmly invited to take part in this workshop. Participation is free of charge but seats are limited. Please register through sending a brief motivation of your interest or a brief summary of the data you use and the immediate ethical questions you have to our workshop coordinator Aline Franzke: aline(a)dataschool.nl Programme 10:00 Doors open, coffee 10:15 Introduction by Nele Heise: “Revisiting research ethics” 10:30 What is a process oriented framework for research? (Nele Heise) What are the different contexts in which research takes place? What are the legal frameworks and how to deal with online data? What are the communication principles that guide academic research? Nele Heise will present a process oriented, context sensitive approach to research ethics. 11:30 Discussion 12: 00 Lunch 12:45 Group work: Applying the framework to everyday practices Which ethical problems researcher face? What are the most urgent topics and themes? Participants form groups according their interest and apply and discuss the presented framework. For example: One group that is mostly interested in problems of qualitative/ qualitative research, reviewing processes. 13:30 Coffee break 13:40 Groups present their results 14:40 Coffee break 14:55 Intervention by Dr. Ingrid Hoofd “How to implement ethical guidelines?” Ingrid Hoofd about pitfalls, other concerns and practical experience in Singapore to implement ethical reflection. Should ethical reflection be obligatory Does it constitute a culture of surveillance? What does it mean to be liable as a faculty? 16:00 Discussion: Next steps in revisiting research ethics and informing policy. 17:00 Drinks Biographical notes Aline Franzke is a junior researcher at Utrecht Data School and the Institute for Cultural Inquiry. She obtained an MA in Applied Ethics at Utrecht University. Aline investigates data practices in public management and consults municipalities on data ethics. Nele Heise is a digital media and communication researcher, working at the Institut für Journalistik und Kommunikationswissenschaften at the university of Hamburg. Nele is involved in developing online research ethics conferences and guidelines. Her Ph.D. project sheds light on the technological and social conditions of media participation in the digital age. Besides her academic endeavour, Nele is active in communicating media research to a broader public audience via blogs, radio and television. Dr. Ingrid Hoofd is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Culture. Her research revolves around issues of representation, feminist and critical theories, philosophy of technology, and information ethics. She is the author of Ambiguities of Activism: Alter-Globalism and the Imperatives of Speed. Her research generally analyses the ways in which alter-globalist activists, as well as left-wing academics, mobilize what she calls ‘speed-elitist’ discourses and divisions in an attempt to overcome gendered, raced, and classed oppressions worldwide.

PLSC-Europe & TILTing 2017 abstract deadline is Nov. 20 (with GikII events)
by Bryce Newell 14 Nov '16

14 Nov '16

The deadline for abstracts for PLSC-Europe 2017 (European Privacy Law Scholars Conference) and the TILTing Perspectives 2017 conference is this coming Sunday, November 20th. Please consider submitting your work and sharing this call with your colleagues who may also be interested. The conference has tracks focused on Data Science, Healthcare, Intellectual Property, and Privacy (including PLSC-Europe), as well as a series of GikII-style events on the final day of the conference. The conference will be in Tilburg (Netherlands), from May 17-19, 2017. *The deadline for all submissions is November 20.* To submit, and for more information, please go to http://www.tilburguniversity.edu/tilting2017. The general call for papers, as well as special instructions for PLSC submissions is at https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/research/institutes-and-research-groups/t… . *Confirmed keynote speakers for the TILTing Perspectives 2017 Conference:* - Solon Barocas (Microsoft Research) - John M. Golden (UT-Austin School of Law) - Flis Henwood (University of Brighton) - Gary T. Marx (Professor Emeritus, M.I.T.) - Sean McDonald (CEO, FrontlineSMS) - Irene Schlünder (German ELSI expert for BBMRI-ERIC) - Christopher Slobogin (Vanderbilt Law School) - Maciej Szpunar (Court of Justice of the EU, Professor of Law, University of Silesia) *Information about the Privacy Track and PLSC-Europe* The definition and boundaries of privacy, as both a philosophical concept and a legal right, have been hotly debated in recent years. Indeed, emerging technologies have continually challenged traditional conceptions of privacy that relate to “private life,” the public/private dichotomy, or property (e.g. “my home is my castle”). Many people now carry devices throughout the public sphere that contain (access to) vast quantities of information about their private lives or maintain technologies in their homes that sense and collect potentially sensitive data—technologies that often have porous digital walls, connect to external networks, and store information in distant servers. As a consequence, governments and companies (as well as other private parties) have an increasing number of entry points to invade personal privacy. This track will include both a general privacy track as well as the 2nd European edition of the Privacy Law Scholars Conference (PLSC-Europe).[1] The general track will encompass a variety of events, including paper presentations, panels, roundtable discussions, and invited talks. PLSC-Europe events will follow the traditional PLSC model, in which papers will be presented and commented on by discussants and other participants (who are all expected to have read the papers in advance). For submissions to the general track, proposals are especially welcomed within the theme of privacy, technology, and space(s), including issues related to privacy in private or public spaces (e.g., homes or streets), and privacy issues generated by the fact that information that used to be stored in private physical spaces (e.g. inside a person’s home, office, desk, or safe) is now often stored on mobile devices or in less-private “virtual” spaces (e.g., cloud storage) that offer less practical and/or legal protection against intrusions by private or public actors. The primary focus of the general track is on privacy law, rather than data protection, but proposals focusing on data protection are also welcome. Submissions to PLSC-Europe may focus on any aspect of privacy or data protection law. Submissions to the general privacy track and PLSC-Europe will be handled separately. *PhD Student Registration-fee waivers*: We are pleased to announce that we will be waiving the conference registration fees for two (2) PhD Students whose work is accepted for presentation in either PLSC-Europe or the broader Privacy Track. Waivers will be awarded selectively by the Privacy Track program committee. To be considered for one of these waivers, please indicate your PhD-student status in your submission. *Suggested themes* Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the ethical, legal, organizational and/or social challenges related to: - The relationships between privacy, technology, and public/private spaces - The evaporation of the physical home as a stronghold for privacy - Privacy crimes (e.g. voyeurism, revenge porn, stalking, eavesdropping, trespassing, hacking) - Privacy, criminal procedure, and the regulation of police powers - Surveillance and privacy - Privacy and mobile devices - Privacy in the cloud - Technologically-facilitated intrusions into private life - Privacy in smart cities - Privacy and the Internet of Things (e.g., smart toys, connected devices) - Privacy of body and mind *Questions* For questions about possible presentation topics for the Privacy Track, please contact the track chair, Dr. Bryce C. Newell, at B.C.Newell(a)tilburguniversity.edu. [1] Based on the popular PLSC event in United States, PLSC-Europe is dedicated to bringing together privacy law scholars, practitioners, and privacy scholars from other disciplines from across Europe and beyond to discuss current issues and foster greater connections between academia and practice. The first PLSC-Europe was held in October 2015 in conjunction with the Amsterdam Privacy Conference. From 2017 onwards, PLSC-Europe will become an annual event co-organized by the University of Amsterdam (IvIR), Tilburg University (TILT), and the Free University Brussels (LSTS/Brussels Privacy Hub), alternating between Amsterdam, Tilburg, and Brussels.

New Book: Data Ethics - The New Competitive Advantage.
by francesco 13 Nov '16

13 Nov '16

*This might be of interest to some of you* *About the book: Data Ethics - The New Competitive Advantage by Gry Hasselbalch and Pernille Tranberg:* Respect for privacy and the right to control one’s own data are becoming key parameters to gain a competitive edge in today’s business world. Companies, organisations and authorities which view data ethics as a social responsibility, giving it the same importance as environmental awareness and respect for human rights, are tomorrow’s winners. The book combines broad trend analyses with more than 50 cases of companies which use data ethics to varying degrees. The authors make the case that citizens and consumers are no longer just concerned about a lack of control over their data, but they also have begun to act, they describe alternative business models, advances in technology and new regulations, all of which combine to foster a growing market for data-ethical products and services. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Data-Ethics-New-Competitive-Advantage-ebook/dp/B01… -- Francesco Lapenta PhD www.beingdigital.org <http://www.beingdigital.org/whois-2/> The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and privileged material.
