New Book Announcement
by Dal Yong Jin 19 Sep '16

19 Sep '16

Please share with other AOIR members: Mobile Gaming in Asia: Politics, Culture and Emerging Technologies By Dal Yong Jin, Simon Fraser University Springer, 2016 http://www.springer.com/gp/book/9789402408249 This book provides holistic approaches to the field of mobile gaming, includes a comprehensive analysis of mobile gaming in the context of Asian smartphones, and develops a local perspective using translated papers published in national languages. This book analyzes mobile gaming in the Asian context and looks into a hitherto neglected focus of inquiry – a localized mobile landscape, with particular reference to young Asians’ engagement with mobile gaming. This edition focuses not only on the remarkable success of local mobile games, but also on the significance of social milieu in the development of Asian mobile technologies and gaming culture. It examines the growth of the current mobile technologies and mobile gaming not as separate but as continuous developments in tandem with the digital economy. It is of interest to both academics and a broader readership from the business, government, and information technology sectors. Dal Yong Jin is Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, Canada (djin(a)sfu.ca)

New issue from communication +1: Machine Communication
by Zach McDowell 18 Sep '16

18 Sep '16

*communication +1 *is pleased to present: *Machine Communication* *Edited by David Gunkel and Zachary McDowell* With this special issue we explore the boundaries of communication beyond the human subject and the restrictions of humanism by considering that which is radically other – the machine. These articles seek to interrogate the opportunities and challenges that emerge around, within, and from interactions and engagements with machines of all types and varieties. By examining the full range of human-machine interactions, machine-machine interactions, or other hitherto unanticipated configurations, we believe we have assembled a collection of ground-breaking essays that push the boundaries of our discipline and probe the new social configurations of the 21st century. *Contributors include: * Zachary McDowell David Gunkel Andrea Guzman Anna Nacher John Novak Jason Archer Victor Mateevitsi Steve Jones Sun-ha Hong Samuel Goyet Cléo Collomb Sandra Robinson Lisa Tam Rajiv Khosla To the authors we extend our deep gratitude for their contributions. Tool for collecting Instagram images/websites/data?
by Rainer Hillrichs 18 Sep '16

18 Sep '16

Dear all, I searched on the list and on the web but couldn't find anything: I'm looging for a tool that collects Instagram images, websites, and data associated with a specific tag. Basically, I want to type in a tag and end up with a folder full of images, websites, and a table with data (e.g. user name, date posted, URL, other tags). I already suspect that is a lot to ask for ;-) Even a simpler tool would be a good start! As long as I don't have to to end up saving individual images, websites, and typiing/copying stuff into a table. Suggestions very much appreciated! CFP - Handbook of Research Methods in Digital Humanities
by lewis levenberg 16 Sep '16

16 Sep '16

Hi all, Please consider submitting a proposal for this edited volume, or forwarding to contacts who may be interested. Digital Humanities is a contested field. With little agreement on exactly what Digital Humanities means it has been deemed both the savior of the humanities and, as recently claimed in the London Review of Books, a “neoliberal tool” (Allington, et al, 2016) bent on destroying traditional humanities departments. Yet, despite the disagreements and debates, we believe that students need a guide to introduce them to the methods digital humanitarians employ. This guide is designed to give students the capacity to study, interpret and present a range of cultural material and practices; develop practical and reflexive understandings of software and digital devices; and explore ways to collaborate and contribute to scholarly communities and public discourse. Digital Humanities extends and rethinks aspects of Literature, History, Philosophy and the languages and takes on critical aspects of fields such as Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, African-American Studies and Global Studies. It includes the development and application of archives, databases, digital environments, software and hardware. It also investigates and circulates cultural practices in new ways by applying theories and methods from the humanities to understand technology. We contend the best work in Digital Humanities takes on these critical approaches to politics, society, culture and technology to ask the important questions of our day. The Handbook of Methods in the Digital Humanities intends to introduce students to a range of digital research methods, locating each method within critical humanities approaches, and providing guides and examples. It is primarily intended for advanced undergraduate students in interdisciplinary and humanities programs. There is potential utility for Honors and Masters’ students or elective classes for majors in Computer Science. In each chapter, experts will introduce a method with examples from their own work and guides to help students formulate and produce their own research. Researchers explain the key terms associated with their method, discuss where the method came from, the ethical issues involved, and why a researcher would or would not use the method. This is followed by a step-by-step guide to the procedures involved in the method illustrated by examples from their case study. Finally, contributors’ conclusions and discussion questions are designed to help the reader consider their own projects, think deeply about the research method and provide a guide for further discussion. Potential submissions may choose to focus on: - Content analysis / textual data mining - Critical code studies - Visual analysis - Physical digital structures - Online interviews and ethnography - Network analysis - Political economy - Communications / media studies - Archives - Big data - Dark web / the illicit - Collaborative research - Presenting research - Information aesthetics - Procedural literacy *Submissions*: Please submit a 400 word abstract and a brief bio by October 1, 2016 to David Rheams (drheams(a)masonlive.gmu.edu) Tai Neilson ( tneilson(a)masonlive.gmu.edu) or Lewis Levenberg (llevenbe(a)gmu.edu) Proposals should identify your method, describe your case study, and position your work within critical approaches to Digital Humanities. Chapter drafts will be due February 1, 2017. We are working with a representative from the publisher Rowman and Littlefield International. Informal inquiries are welcome!

CFP: ICWSM 2017 (Montreal)
by Alice E. Marwick 16 Sep '16

16 Sep '16

Hi all, I'm a program co-chair this year at the International Conference on Web & Social Media. It's an interdisciplinary conference (following more or less a CS model) that has attracted some great social scientists in the past. In my experience, the attendees are very open to qualitative approaches and I encourage you all to apply! *The 11th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM 2017)* Sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Montreal, Canada: May 15-18, 2017 http://icwsm.org/2017/submitting/call-for-papers/ The International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM) is a forum for researchers from multiple disciplines to come together to share knowledge, discuss ideas, exchange information, and learn about cutting-edge research in diverse fields with the common theme of online social media. This overall theme includes research in new perspectives in social theories, as well as computational algorithms for analyzing social media. Research presented at ICWSM blends social science and computational approaches to answer important and challenging questions about human social behavior through social media while advancing computational tools for vast and unstructured data. ICWSM, now in its eleventh year, has become one of the premier venues for computational social science, and previous years of ICWSM have featured papers, posters, and demos that draw upon network science, machine learning, computational linguistics, sociology, communication, and political science. The uniqueness of the venue and the quality of submissions have contributed to a fast growth of the conference and a competitive acceptance rate around 20% for full-length research papers published in the proceedings by the Association for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The accepted papers will be open access and have equal time for a full oral presentation. Full papers will also have the opportunity to display their paper as a poster at the venue. For ICWSM-17, in addition to the usual program of contributed talks, posters and demos, the main conference will include a selection of keynote talks from prominent scientists and technologists. Building on successes in previous years, ICWSM-17 will also hold a day of workshops and tutorials in addition to the main conference. *Please see the full call for disciplines, topics, and types of social media. *http://icwsm.org/2017/submitting/call-for-papers/ *Paper Submission Categories* Please note that the formatting and submission instructions in the author kit are for final, accepted papers; ICWSM submissions are anonymous, and must conform to all detailed instructions for blind review (Detailed guidelines). In addition, the copyright slug may be omitted in the initial submission phase and no copyright form is required until a paper is accepted for publication. This year there are three submission options; ICWSM is introducing a new paper format, Dataset Papers, for researchers whose primary contribution is to provide new data resources and methodological novelty in procuring those resources. *1. Full paper format: *Full paper submissions to ICWSM are recommended to be 8 pages long, and must be at most 10 pages long, including figures and references. The final camera-ready length (between 8-10 pages) for each full paper in the proceedings will be at the discretion of the program chairs. All papers must follow AAAI formatting guidelines. *2. Dataset paper format: *Dataset paper submissions must comprise two parts: a dataset or group of datasets, and metadata describing the content, quality, structure, potential uses of the dataset(s), and methods employed for data collection. Descriptive statistics may be included in the metadata (more sophisticated analyses should be part of a regular paper submission). Datasets and metadata must be published as part of ICWSM data sharing service and the papers will be part of the full proceedings. Dataset paper submissions must be between 8-10 pages long. All papers must follow AAAI formatting guidelines. *3. Poster and demo paper format: *Poster paper submissions to ICWSM must be 4 pages long, including figures and references. Demo paper submissions to ICWSM must be 2 pages long, including figures and references. All papers must follow AAAI formatting guidelines. Anonymity: Paper submissions to ICWSM must be anonymized. Social sciences and sociophysics papers with optional publication: We will be continuing the 'social science and sociophysics' track at ICWSM-17 following its successful debut in 2013. This option is for researchers in social science and sociophysics who wish to submit full papers without publication in the conference proceedings. While papers in this track will not be published, we expect these submissions to describe the same high-quality and complete work as the main track submissions. Papers accepted to this track will be full presentations integrated with the conference, but they will be published only as abstracts in the conference proceedings. Ethics: We encourage the authors to obtain ethical approval for experiments with human subjects from their corresponding institutions' Internal Review Board (IRB) and demonstrate this information as part of the submission. Please see the call for papers ( http://icwsm.org/2017/submitting/call-for-papers/) for template and additional guidelines. *ICWSM 2017 - Important Dates* *Workshops - *http://icwsm.org/2017/submitting/workshops/ Proposals: December 12, 2016 *Papers, Posters, and Demos - * http://icwsm.org/2017/submitting/call-for-papers/ Abstract Submission: January 6, 2017 (by 23:59 Hawaii Standard Time) Full Papers Submission: January 23, 2017 (by 23:59 Hawaii Standard Time) Paper and poster notifications: February 28, 2017 Camera Ready Version Due: March 10, 2017 *Tutorials - *http://icwsm.org/2017/submitting/tutorials/ Proposals: January 25, 2017 Notification: February 15, 2017 *ICWSM 2017, Montreal, Canada* Tutorials and Workshops: May 15, 2017 Main Conference: May 16-18, 2017 Sandra Gonzalez-Bailon, Alice Marwick, & Winter Mason ICWSM 2017 Program Co-chairs Vanessa Frias-Martinez and Sarita Schoenebeck ICWSM 2017 Tutorials Chairs Munmun De Choudhury, Brian Keegan, Jürgen Pfeffer ICWSM 2017 Workshops Chairs -- Alice E.
