Dear Colleagues, Apologies for crossposting. Since 1999, I have maintained a collection of web pages that provides links to useful resources for people on the academic job market in communication studies, though others in critical humanities fields may find the materials useful as well. In recent years, I have added material on other aspects of professional life and will continue to do so. You can find it at: http://sterneworks.org/Academe New this year: links on getting a PhD in the age of social media, the SSRC’s awesome grant writing guide, how to manage grad school if you’re poor, new teaching resources, and more! I am always looking for good suggestions for material to add to the site, and as you'll see, I have used it to archive some material that has been circulated in other fora. If you have a suggestion for a link or a document worth archiving, or a correction to a typo or missing or expired link, please email me at jonathan.sterne(a)mcgill.ca<mailto:jonathan.sterne@mcgill.ca>. Please note that I do not post or keep track of job ads, nor am I interested in promoting commercial services or people's professional website. This is purely for material that’s free and that I judge to be truly helpful for my intended audience. I intend to continue building the site, so suggestions for other areas to cover would be appreciated. Thanks for reading. ****Apologies for any cross posting **** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Online Book Launch: Social Media in Industrial China and Social Media in Rural China Date: Tuesday 13 Sep 2016 (Tomorrow!) Time: * London: 3 pm - 4 pm BST (UTC+1 hour) * New York: 10 am - 11 am EDT (UTC-4 hours) * Los Angeles: 7 am - 8 am PDT (UTC-7 hours) * Hong Kong: 10 pm - 11 pm HKT (UTC+8 hours) Register today: http://bit.ly/2b1mVuA -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join Professor Daniel Miller (UCL Anthropology), Xinyuan Wang (UCL Anthropology) and Tom McDonald (HKU Sociology) for a live and interactive discussion about UCL's groundbreaking Why We Post project. Streamed on Youtube, and hosted by HKU Sociology, this exciting discussion will mark the launch of two brand new Open Access volumes Social Media in Industrial China (UCL Press) and Social Media in Rural China (UCL Press), which detail they key findings of the Chinese section of the UCL Why We Post project. Put your own questions to the authors, and hear them discuss their experiences of conducting ethnographic fieldwork on social media use in China, writing their books, and how the unique case of China has implications for understanding social media use around the world. Register today: http://bit.ly/2b1mVuA -------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the books Wang's Social Media in Industrial China describes social media's role in the biggest migration in human history, an estimated 250 million Chinese people have left their villages in recent decades to live and work in urban areas. Wang describes a second migration taking place: a movement from offline to online. As Wang argues, this is not simply a convenient analogy but represents the convergence of two phenomena as profound and consequential as each other, where the online world now provides a home for the migrant workers who feel otherwise 'homeless'. Find out more: http://bit.ly/2b1qAT7 McDonald's Social Media in Rural China argues that social media allows rural Chinese people to extend and transform their social relationships by deepening already existing connections with friends known through their school, work or village, while also experimenting with completely new forms of relationships through online interactions with strangers. By juxtaposing these seemingly opposed relations, rural social media users are able to use these technologies to understand, capitalise on and challenge the notions of morality that underlie rural life. CFP Online Misogyny
by Eugenia Siapera 12 Sep '16

12 Sep '16

Dear AoIRs, Please consider submitting an abstract to the special issue of Feminist Media Studies on Online Misogyny. Deadline: October 1st! Details below and in this link: http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/ah/special-issue-online-misogyny-call In recent years, online misogyny has become a major concern for women. As a new wave of feminist / female bloggers, journalists, activists and gamers have attempted to assert their presence on the internet, there has been a concerted backlash against both feminism and women generally. This special issue of* Feminist Media Studies* seeks to identify and theorise the complex relationships between online culture, technology and misogyny. How have the internet’s anti-woman spaces and discourses been transformed by the technological affordances of the internet and social media? How are they being articulated and reproduced in diverse cultural contexts and / or transnationally? Are they borne of the same types of discontents articulated in older forms of anti-feminism or to what extent do they articulate a different constellation of social, cultural and gender-political factors? Despite growing social concern about online misogyny, discussion and debate of this issue has been primarily journalistic to date. Moreover, the focus has been strongly western-/anglo-centric, and has tended to revolve around certain ‘flashpoint’ events. There is a need, therefore, for greater representation of how this phenomenon operates globally across contexts from non-anglophone, technologically advanced cultures to countries in the Global South. It is important to ask, for example, how internet access and local gender landscapes complicate our understanding of this subject. In addition to the more high-profile, anonymous attacks covered by the western media, there are also reports of intimate partner and acquaintance abuse online, which often takes the form of ‘revenge porn’ or unauthorized distribution of sexts by men known to their victims. Moreover, misogyny can and does operate in the more formal contexts of the technology sector. All of these examples should alert us to the importance of progressing academic inquiry on this issue not from a point at which we assume online misogyny to be a stable, recognisable phenomenon but rather by inviting contributions that will expand current knowledge and understanding beyond western experiences, gender-political contexts and epistemological frameworks. What is significant about all of these phenomena is their very real impact on the lives and safety of real women, as well as their success in deterring women from expressing their opinions or putting their work online. Despite this, online misogyny remains under-researched in academia (Jane, 2014). There have, however, been important activist interventions such as #everydaysexism and #freethenipple as well as a raft of feminist groups organizing online to highlight and challenge misogyny. Given that activists, journalists, gamers and filmmakers have effectively led this charge, we consider it important to ask whether these new, more popular expressions of digital feminism are reaching new audiences and shaping new publics, and what impact this might have on theoretical understandings of feminism. Moreover, while it is important to consider the new misogyny in relation to older theorisations of anti-feminism (Faludi, 1991; Kimmel, 1995; Messner, 1997), it is also crucial to build reflexive criticism into narratives that have hitherto excluded non-western cultures as well as other, related forms of online hate speech such as racism, homophobia and transphobia. *Online Misogyny* aims to give this increasingly important area of enquiry the impetus, attention and theoretical cohesion it requires. The increasingly amorphous and anonymous nature of online misogyny and the fluid and dynamic nature of online communication pose considerable challenges for data capture and analysis, and we expect methodological innovation to be a key element of this special issue. We also hope to publish at least one contribution from an activist, artist or non-academic. *Possible topics in relation to this theme may include (but are not limited to):* - Online misogyny and feminist media theorisations - Forms of online misogyny (including threats, abuse, ‘revenge porn’, creepshots, sexting, slut-shaming, technology-enabled intimate partner and acquaintance violence, and others) - Sites and contexts of online misogyny - Discourses and visuality of online misogyny - Global contexts and online misogyny - Transnational travel / global pathways of misogyny - Online misogyny’s articulations with racism, homophobia and transphobia - Technological affordances: the role of algorithims, anonymity, governance, technical design, platform politics, etc. - Social, political and personal impact of online misogyny - Women’s / feminist responses to online misogyny - Performative responses to online misogyny - The role of social media corporations and community managers - Workplace and institutional misogyny: misogyny in the technology / gaming / journalism sectors - Legislation and corporate policy - Digitally networked publics: the impact of online misogyny on democracy and the public sphere - Online misogyny and the post-feminist context *Aims & Scope* *Feminist Media Studies* provides a transdisciplinary, transnational forum for researchers pursuing feminist approaches to the field of media and communication studies, with attention to the historical, philosophical, cultural, social, political, and economic dimensions and analysis of sites including print and electronic media, film and the arts, and new media technologies. The journal invites contributions from feminist researchers working across a range of disciplines and conceptual perspectives. *Peer Review Policy* All research articles in this journal undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymous refereeing by at least two scholars. Submission Instructions Please submit a 350-word abstract as well as a short (1-page) CV to Debbie Ging (debbie.ging(a)dcu.ie) and Eugenia Siapera (eugenia.siapera(a)dcu.ie) by *1st October 2016*. Authors whose abstracts are selected will be notified by 15th January 2017 and asked to submit complete manuscripts by 15th June 2017. Acceptance of the abstract does not guarantee publication of the paper, which will be subject to peer review. New Book - Inhuman Networks: Social Media and the Archaeology of Connection
by Grant Bollmer 12 Sep '16

12 Sep '16

Hi everyone (and apologies for cross-posting), I’m just writing to publicise that my book, ‘Inhuman Networks’, is available now from Bloomsbury, which some of you may be interested in. I’ve included the description and blurbs below, but more information can be found at Bloomsbury’s website: http://www.bloomsbury.com/au/inhuman-networks-9781501316166/ At the moment I believe you can get a 40% discount with the code BOLLMER16 on Bloomsbury’s website, though it’s still quite expensive, so please let your library know if you’re interested! ----------------------- Inhuman Networks: Social Media and the Archaeology of Connection Grant Bollmer Hardback | 304 pp | August 2016 | ISBN: 9781501316159 Social media's connectivity is often thought to be a manifestation of human nature buried until now, revealed only through the diverse technologies of the participatory internet. Rather than embrace this view, Inhuman Networks: Social Media and the Archaeology of Connection argues that the human nature revealed by social media imagines network technology and data as models for behavior online. Covering a wide range of historical and interdisciplinary subjects, Grant Bollmer examines the emergence of “the network” as a model for relation in the 1700s and 1800s and follows it through marginal, often forgotten articulations of technology, biology, economics, and the social. From this history, Bollmer examines contemporary controversies surrounding social media, extending out to the influence of network models on issues of critical theory, politics, popular science, and neoliberalism. By moving through the past and present of network media, Inhuman Networks demonstrates how contemporary network culture unintentionally repeats debates over the limits of Western modernity to provide an idealized future where “the human” is interchangeable with abstract, flowing data connected through well-managed, distributed networks. “Part an archaeology of connectivity, part critical analysis of contemporary culture, Inhuman Networks offers an inspiring take for media studies. Grant Bollmer's rich, multi-layered book shows that social media does not just mediate but performs a subtle yet effective moral code: the networks prescribe senses of the self, community, value and direction. The so-called human exists only if it routes.” – Jussi Parikka, Winchester School of Art, UK author of Digital Contagions (2007) and Insect Media (2010) “Bollmer's Inhuman Networks represents the best of the cultural studies tradition of taking the object seriously, learning everything one can about it, putting it into historical and cultural contexts, and then rigorously critiquing it. Combining media archaeology and genealogy, Bollmer crafts critiques of the admonition to connect or be considered inhuman. However, he also challenges misguided calls for total refusal of connection, instead insisting we humans re-engage with practices of collectivity and commonality.” – Robert W. Gehl, Associate Professor of Communication, University of Utah, USA, and author of Reverse Engineering Social Media “Bollmer's Inhuman Networks issues a bold and welcome critique of social media's culture of connectivity. This accessible, provocative analysis of the “network” concept is shaped by network theorists predating the network society: anatomists deciphering the flow of bodily fluids, railroad conglomerates arguing about rail gauge, defenders of branch banking, and conspiracy theorists. Bollmer deftly shows how the conjunction of these early modern discourses of the network combine with contemporary digital technologies to forge “nodal citizenship,” a reduction of the human to an information node in a broader technological network. A must-read for anyone interested in communication, media studies, cultural theory, and political economy.” – Damien Smith Pfister, Department of Communication, University of Maryland, USA and author of Networked Media, Networked Rhetorics “Inhuman Networks masterfully exposes the stunted understandings and logical fallacies undergirding widespread economic and cultural assertions that unless we are connected through social media we are less than human. Bollmer convincingly argues that enlightenment understandings of “human nature” are being supplanted by neoliberal and normative narratives of networked communications as the way to finally achieve full humanity. Yet this is a disempowered form of “humanity” constituted through capital and data alone and ultimately less important than the inhuman(e) routers through which individuals “connect” in empowered and irrelevant ways.” – Ken Hillis, Professor of Media and Technology Studies University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill USA “As social media becomes more pervasive in many people's lives globally, the complex entanglement of the human and inhuman across practices, cultures, flows and networks are yet to being fully understood. Grant Bollmer's Inhuman Networks: Social Media and the Archaeology of Connection offers a thorough and thought-provoking discussion of how we might re-imagine social media beyond a human-centric model bolstered by problematic metaphors around connection. From metaphors such as “networks” to “contagion”, Bollmer takes us on a fascinating journey in and around the messy relationality between technology, desire and humans. This book puts the complex human and beyond-human dimensions of social media in context historically and conceptually in ways that are both poetic and inspiring.” – Larissa Hjorth, RMIT Distinguished Professor School of Media and Communication, RMIT University, Australia DR GRANT BOLLMER | Lecturer in Digital Cultures Digital Cultures Program, Department of Media and Communications | Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY Room N225, John Woolley Building A20 | The University of Sydney | NSW | 2006 T +61 2 9351 2308 | F +61 2 9351 2434 E grant.bollmer(a)sydney.edu.au<mailto:grant.bollmer@sydney.edu.au> | W sydney.edu.au/arts/digital_cultures/<http://sydney.edu.au/arts/digital_cultures/> CRICOS 00026A This email plus any attachments to it are confidential. Hi all, My colleague, Marc Raboy, published a (lively and accessible) tome on Marconi and I suspect it might be of interest to those who work in the area of networked communications https://global.oup.com/academic/product/marconi-9780199313587?cc=ca&lang=en& It has received rave reviews... and/or Marc has written some interesting pieces on it. Here are a few http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/21/books/review/marconi-by-marc-raboy.html?_… http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v535/n7612/full/535354a.html He is not active on this list so I offered to pass the news about this pretty monumental book here. CFP AAG 2017: Digital\\Human\\Labour
by Jim T 09 Sep '16

09 Sep '16

*Call for Papers: Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting. April 5-9, 2017, Boston, MA* The proposed Digital Geographies Working Group of the RGS/IBG and the proposed Digital Geographies Specialty Group of the AAG would like to invite submissions to a series of paper sessions and panels for the 2017 meeting of the American Association of Geographers in Boston, MA. Reflecting the shared interests of these groups, and their mutual desire to facilitate conversations between a wide range of geographical scholarship, this call is for papers exploring specifically the various intersections of ‘digital’ and ‘labour’ in diverse meanings of both. We will convene a concluding panel session, and encourage interested participants to submit abstracts for any of these three paper sessions: *The human labour of digital workDiscussant: Mark Graham* [image: image] The spread of the internet to three and a half billion people around the world has significant implications for the human labour. It is now relatively straightforward to outsource business processes to anyone, anywhere, that has a digital connection. This session aims to bring together scholarship that explores the human labour of this digital work. Who carries it out? How does it effect the livelihoods of workers? What sorts of political and organisational governance regimes bring it into being? And what are the ethical, spatial, social, and economic implications of a world in which human labour is increasing disembedded into digital networks? *The digital labour of being humanDiscussant: Gillian Rose* [image: image] Digital technologies are now embedded in many aspects of everyday life in many places, mediating everyday experiences of embodiment, mobility, and communication. It is clear that many of these mediations are reproducing existing ways and forms of ‘being human’, but it is also clear that new forms of (post)humanities are emerging, co-produced with, for example, VR headsets, big data, and social media platforms. This session aims to bring together scholarship that addresses these monadic emergences. What new forms of distributed agency, performative gestures and navigational orientations could and should be mapped? What are their temporalities and spatialities, and what hierarchies of power and difference do they enact? *The algorithmic labour of beingDiscussant: Jim Thatcher* [image: image] Alongside the rise in access to internet technologies and the quotidian uses of said technologies, has come an entwined rise in the analysis and manipulation of digital information through algorithms. Just as new technologies introduce interfaces, mediations, and affordances to (re)produce representations of self, so too do the algorithms which sort, select, and present information constrain what can be done and known through the use of said devices. Similarly, even as the very real geography of the labor of digital work shifts and extends across the globe, algorithms increasingly insert themselves betwixt and between laborers, customers, and corporate interests, altering traditional employment relations through the mediation of technology. Building from the themes of the previous two sessions, this session aims to bring together research on the many ways in which algorithms and quantification function in the world. Questions of interest include, but are not limited to: What sorts of new spatial relations are possible through the algorithmic mediation of labor relations? Where is the work of algorithms done? What are the historical roots of this process? What new forms of knowledge and power have been enabled (and constrained) by these systems? If you have any additional questions, please contact Jim Thatcher ( jethatch(a)uw.edu) Mark Graham (mark.graham(a)oii.ox.ac.uk) or Gillian Rose ( gillian.rose(a)open.ac.uk) For consideration of inclusion, please submit abstract to jethatch(a)uw.edu by October 15th, 2016. Please format your abstract in a text file of no more than 250 words, including a title, your name, institutional affiliation and email address in the document.

Dear Daniel, Though it's been published some years ago, I'd highly recommend Brighenti, Andrea (2007): Visibility. A category for the social sciences. In: Current Sociology 55(3), pp. 323-342 with regard to the category ..."classical" approaches and authors that do NOT explicitly talk about today's political (social) media contexts, but which you would consider highly applicable to understand such phenomena. Vice versa, *if something is **not visible**in today's social-media-democracy it does not exist, thus has no meaning, thus has no political power/impact/relevance**.* Yet, I feel - and so far it's only really a feeling - that *these invisible spaces and actions enable, generate and allocate as much political power as their visible twins.* Against the backdrop of "social-media-everywhere" and the *dominant daily narrative of the visible* (which we all experience when we look at our smartphone), I'm now looking for *authors and concepts that explore/reflect/challenge/* - that either the *politics of the visible* - or the *politics of the invisible* - or even the *relationship between visibility and invisibility* with regards to political power. It might be *authors and concepts that already reflect on today's (hyper) social media worlds**, as well as "classical" approaches on visibility/invisibility of power.* To give you two examples: Thinking about today's social media, we could have a closer look at the power of images (e.g. a meme) on our interfaces (visible) or at the algorithmic structures that sort and "deliver" these images (invisible). Both layers of power are real, in the sense that they affect us in our daily live, but one is visible and one is invisible. And of course, they are certainly connected. Same goes for something that existed before social media, let's say party politics. There have always been official press releases and interviews about how well e.g. a party congress went and what wonderful values this party now stands for (transparency, inclusion, etc.), but at the same time, at the congress in question, there also existed back-room meetings and private phone calls to influence internal party currents (opacity, exclusion, etc.). Again, both spaces and actions are real, in the sense that they have power effects on the party's members and/or possible voters, but one (media) space is visible and the other one invisible. And, here too, both layers work together perfectly. So, anyone wants to share their must-read with me? *...on "new" Cultural and Social Anthropological approaches and authors that already reflect on the politics of visibility/invisibility against today's backdrop of "social-media-everywhere". ** ** **...and/or "classical" ***approaches and authors* that do NOT explicitly talk about today's political (social) media contexts, but which you would consider highly applicable to understand such phenomena. *Either directly drop your recommendations in here: *https://danielderkunzelmann.piratenpad.de/airl-mediaoverload-politics-visibility-invisibility* or reply to this message via the list or a pm :)* * Of course, when the literature list is done, I will be sharing it with all of you! kind regards, Daniel *Daniel Kunzelmann, Ph.D.c / Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich / Institute of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology twitter @der_kunzelmann <https://twitter.com/der_kunzelmann> blog http://transformations-blog.com/daniel-kunzelmann/ web http://unibas.academia.edu/DanielKunzelmann linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/pub/daniel-kunzelmann/7b/426/9a5* _______________________________________________ The Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: http://www.aoir.org/ This message and any attachment are intended solely for the addressee and may contain confidential information.
