2016 Best Dissertation Award - Dr. Eden Litt
by Michelle, AoIR Association Coordinator 07 Sep '16

07 Sep '16

The Best Dissertation Award for 2016 goes to* Dr. Eden Litt* for her dissertation, “The Imagined Audience: How People Think About Their Audience and Privacy on Social Network Sites.” She filed it June 2015 at Northwestern University, under the direction of Prof. Eszter Hargittai. Dr. Litt investigates the imagined audiences to whom social media users share their latest updates – whom do they imagine as the audience? What shapes these imagined audiences? Do these imaginings fluctuate each time they post? And do these imaginings relate to other factors, such as what people reveal or conceal? Her research design was creative and ambitious, and she managed to draw from a diverse sample of participants and a range of social network sites to make her claims. Litt’s rigorous study supports important findings, which ultimately sketch an agenda for future research in Internet studies focused on better understanding the intentions and assumptions of social media users in their day-to-day online practices. A readable and well-organized manuscript, Litt’s dissertation is a shining example of excellence in the field today. The committee also offers an honorable mention to Dr. Anne Helmond. Her dissertation was titled “The Web as Platform: Data Flows in Social Media,” and she filed it September 2015 at the University of Amsterdam, under the direction of Prof. Richard Rogers. Dr. Helmond’s dissertation is notable and stands to make a significant long-term impact in the field. AoIR is grateful for the hard work by this year’s Best Dissertation Award committee: Daren Brabham (chair), Taina Bucher, Mathias Klang, Anders Larsson, and Sun Sun Lim. Congratulations to Dr. Litt and Dr. Helmond for their exceptional work!

Reminder: Deadline 17 Oct 2016 - CFP: Philosophy & Technology Special Issue on Ethical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data
by Brent Mittelstadt 07 Sep '16

07 Sep '16

Dear colleagues, Apologies for any cross posting. Please find below a reminder for the Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue onEthical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data. Deadline for submissions: October 17, 2016 Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on Ethical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data GUEST EDITOR Brent Mittelstadt, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford INTRODUCTION In biomedical research, the analysis of large datasets (Big Data) has become a major driver of innovation and success. ‘Biomedical Big Data’ (BBD) describes the complex and new set of technologically-driven phenomena focusing on analysis of aggregated datasets to improve medical knowledge, public health, clinical care and commercial health and well-being devices and services. Machine learning and algorithmic categorisation can increasingly make sense of the seemingly endless data emerging from sensors, wearable devices, clinical observations, clinical trials, social and online platforms which provide insight into the behaviours and physiology of individuals. BBD is expected to provide new ways of understanding health and well-being at the level of the individual and society, for example by predicting behaviours, monitoring diseases and outbreaks, and providing risk stratification for individual patients. Epidemiology, infectious disease research, and genomics and genetics are already deeply affected. However, the collection, storage and analysis of BBD potentially raises serious ethical problems which may threaten the huge opportunities it offers. To avoid foreseeable problems and react quickly to emergent issues, the planning and deployment of BBD must include proactive ethical risk assessment. To contribute to this critical step, this special issue of Philosophy and Technology aims to map new, under-researched but important issues, concepts and cases that should be considered in proactive ethical assessment of emerging BBD platforms and services. TOPICS We request the submission of research articles addressing topics including: • Theories and concepts critical to the ethical assessment of biomedical Big Data in particular • Required modifications to informed consent in response to the scale and complexity of BBD • Alternatives to informed consent for BBD governance • Group-level protections, harms and benefits • Ethical principles for governance of BBD platforms • Applicability of traditional medical research ethics principles to BBD • Privacy, de-identification and research subject rights to data access • Ownership of intellectual property generated from BBD • Uses of BBD for empowerment or improvement of patient experiences • Implications of data-intensive clinical experiences for the doctor-patient relationship • Implications of the crossover between personal health devices and BBD research, e.g. Apple HealthKit • Impact of the European General Data Protection Regulation on both biomedical research and personal health/wellness services • Policy recommendations and requirements for poorly regulated BBD practices • Empirical studies/cases of existing Big Data practices that demonstrate critical ethical issues, concepts and solutions TIMETABLE • October 17, 2016: Deadline for paper submissions • December 16, 2016: Deadline reviews papers • January 31, 2017: Deadline revised papers • 2017: Publication of the special issue SUBMISSION DETAILS To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Managerhttp://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The journal’s submission guidelines and instructions for authors can be found here<http://www.springer.com/philosophy/epistemology+and+philosophy+of+science/j…>. Articles should be written in English and not exceed 10,000 words. The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select the special article type: "Special Issue on Ethical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data” from the selection provided in the submission process. All submissions are subject to double-blind peer review. Submissions will be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. Fwd: CfP: Academic Labour, Digital Media and Capitalism
by Christian Fuchs 06 Sep '16

06 Sep '16

-------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: CfP: Academic Labour, Digital Media and Capitalism Date: Tue, 6 Sep 2016 21:52:43 +0100 From: Thomas Allmer <thomas.allmer(a)UTI.AT> Reply-To: Thomas Allmer <thomas.allmer(a)UTI.AT> CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Academic Labour, Digital Media and Capitalism Special Issue of /tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique / http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/27 GUEST EDITORS: Thomas Allmer and Ergin Bulut Modern universities have always been part of and embedded into capitalism in political, economic and cultural terms. In 1971, at the culmination of the Vietnam War, the Chomsky-Foucault debate reminded us of this fact when a young student pointed a question towards Chomsky: "How can you, with your very courageous attitude towards the war in Vietnam, survive in an institution like MIT, which is known here as one of the great war contractors and intellectual makers of this war?" (Chomsky and Foucault 2006, 63) Chomsky responded dialectically, but also had to admit that the academic institution he is working for is a major organisation of war research and thereby strengthens the political contradictions and inequalities in capitalist societies. Edward P. Thompson, one of the central figures in the early years of British cultural studies, edited the book "Warwick University Ltd" in 1970. Thompson was working at the University of Warwick then and published together with colleagues and students a manuscript that discovered, as the title suggests, the close relationship of their university with industry and industrial capitalism. The book also revealed some evidence of secret political surveillance of staff and students by the university uncovered by students occupying the Registry at Warwick at that time. The relationship between state control and global capitalism has intensified in the last decades. With the collapse of the welfare state and the drop of public funds, universities are positioning themselves as active agents of global capital, transforming urban spaces into venues for capital accumulation and competing for international student populations for profit. In this environment, students have to pay significant amounts of tuition for precarious futures. Similarly, teaching and research faculties across the globe have to negotiate their roles that are often strictly defined in an entrepreneurial manner. Increasingly, the value of academic labour is measured in capitalist terms and therefore subject to new forms of control, surveillance and productivity measures. As the recent cases of Steven Salaita (USA), Academics for Peace (Turkey) and the crackdown against students in India reveal, academic labour and academics in general are also facing immense challenges in terms of state control and freedom of speech. Situated in this economic and political context, the overall task of this special issue of /tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique/ is to gather critical contributions examining universities, academic labour, digital media and capitalism. We are thus particularly interested in articles focusing on (1) the context, history and theoretical concepts underlying academic labour, (2) the relationship between academic work and digital media/new information and communication technologies/the Internet/social media and (3) the political potentials and challenges within higher education. We welcome submissions that cover one or more of the following or related questions. 1) Contextualising and Theorising Academic Labour * What is the historical role of universities and academic labour and how has it changed over time? * What is the role of universities for capitalist development in the age of neoliberalism and post-Fordism (e.g. employability, market-driven and industrial research)? * How far can the neoliberal university be considered as medium and outcome of informational capitalism? * How far can the university expansion be understood as a dialectic development of progress and regress, social achievement and advanced commodification? * What is meant by concepts such as Warwick University Ltd, McUniversity, academic proletarianisation, edu-factory, corporate university, academic capitalism, entrepreneurial university, university gamble, digital diploma mills, global university, DIY university, etc. in the context of academic labour? How are these concepts related to the wider social context and the existing capitalist order? How can a systematic typology of the existing literature be constructed? * What is the role of the concept of value for understanding academic labour? * What is the role of the concepts of the working class and the proletariat for theorising academic labour? * How should we define academic labour; who is included/excluded by this understanding? Where does adjunct labour stand? * What kind of workers are academics and how are they related to knowledge, informational and cultural workers? * How far can the outcomes of academic labour be considered as part of the information and communication commons? * To what extent rests informational capitalism on the commons produced at universities? * What are the important dimensions for constructing a typology of working conditions within higher education (e.g. new managerialism, audit culture, workload, job insecurity)? * How do different working contexts and conditions in academia shape feelings of autonomy, flexibility and reputation on the one hand and precariousness, overwork and dissatisfaction on the other? 2) Academic Labour and Digital Media * Given that the academic work process is today strongly mediated through digital media, to what extent can academic workers be considered as digital workers, and academic labour as digital labour? * In how far can digital education and online distance learning be understood as a new capital accumulation strategy that aims at attracting international students in a commodified and competitive higher education market? * In how far can digital education be regarded as a response to neoliberal conditions within higher education? * How do digital media/new information and communication technologies/the Internet/social media frame the working conditions of academics? * How are the working conditions of academics characterised by intensification and extensification in the realm of the digital university (e.g. the blurring of working space and other spaces of human life, the blurring of labour and free time, fast academia, always-on cultures, deskilling, casualisation, electronic monitoring, digital surveillance, social media use for self-promotion, new forms of intellectual property rights)? 3) Politics, Struggles and Alternatives * How do the broader political realities and potentials in terms of solidarity, participation and democracy at universities look like? * What is the relationship between the state and academic labour? What are some of the lessons that we can learn from global crackdowns on academic labour? * What are the challenges in order to reclaim the university as site of struggle for both academics and students? * How far can the struggle at universities be connected to the global struggle against capitalism? * How do the political potentials of alternatives within higher education look like (e.g. informal learning processes, co-operative education, open education, open access, copyleft, creative and digital commons, Wikiversity)? DEADLINES: Abstract submission: 31 October 2016 All abstracts will be reviewed and decisions on acceptance/rejection will be communicated to the authors by the end of November 2016. Full paper submission: 15 April 2017 Please submit article title, author name(s), contact data and abstract of 200-400 words to: Thomas Allmer, thomas.allmer(a)uti.at <mailto:thomas.allmer@uti.at> and Ergin Bulut, erginb(a)gmail.com <mailto:erginb@gmail.com> ABOUT THE GUEST EDITORS: Thomas Allmer is Lecturer in Digital Media at the University of Stirling, Scotland, UK, and a member of the Unified Theory of Information Research Group, Austria. ** Digital\\Human\\Labour ** Call for papers at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting. April 5-9, 2017, Boston, USA
by Mark Graham 06 Sep '16

06 Sep '16

*Digital \\ Human \\ Labour <http://zerogeography.net/post/149997132008/digitalhumanlabour-call-for-pape…>* Organisers: Jim Thatcher <http://directory.tacoma.uw.edu/employee/jethatch> (Washington), Mark Graham <https://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/mark-graham/> (Oxford), Gillian Rose <http://www.open.ac.uk/people/gr334> (Open University) The proposed Digital Geographies Working Group of the RGS/IBG and the proposed Digital Geographies Specialty Group of the AAG would like to invite submissions to a series of paper sessions and panels <http://zerogeography.net/post/149997132008/digitalhumanlabour-call-for-pape…> for the 2017 meeting of the American Association of Geographers in Boston, USA. Reflecting the shared interests of these groups, and their mutual desire to facilitate conversations between a wide range of geographical scholarship, this call is for papers exploring specifically the various intersections of ‘digital’ and ‘labour’ in diverse meanings of both. We will convene a concluding panel session, and encourage interested participants to submit abstracts for any of these three paper sessions: *The human labour of digital work* *Discussant: Mark Graham* The spread of the internet to three and a half billion people around the world has significant implications for the human labour. It is now relatively straightforward to outsource business processes to anyone, anywhere, that has a digital connection. This session aims to bring together scholarship that explores the human labour of this digital work. Who carries it out? How does it affect the livelihoods of workers? What sorts of political and organisational governance regimes bring it into being? And what are the ethical, spatial, social, and economic implications of a world in which human labour is increasing disembedded into digital networks? *The digital labour of being human* *Discussant: Gillian Rose* Digital technologies are now embedded in many aspects of everyday life in many places, mediating everyday experiences of embodiment, mobility, and communication. It is clear that many of these mediations are reproducing existing ways and forms of ‘being human’, but it is also clear that new forms of (post)humanities are emerging, co-produced with, for example, VR headsets, big data, and social media platforms. This session aims to bring together scholarship that addresses these monadic emergences. What new forms of distributed agency, performative gestures and navigational orientations could and should be mapped, and in what ways? What are their temporalities and spatialities, and what geometries of power and difference do they enact? *The algorithmic labour of being* *Discussant: Jim Thatcher* Alongside the rise in access to internet technologies and their everyday usage, has come an entwined rise in the analysis and manipulation of digital information through algorithms. Just as new technologies introduce interfaces, mediations, and affordances to (re)produce representations of self, so too do the algorithms which sort, select, and present information constrain what can be done and known through the use of said devices. Similarly, even as the very real geography of the labor of digital work shifts and extends across the globe, algorithms increasingly insert themselves betwixt and between laborers, customers, and corporate interests, altering traditional employment relations through the mediation of technology. Building from the themes of the previous two sessions, this session aims to bring together research on the many ways in which algorithms and quantification function in the world. Questions of interest include, but are not limited to: What sorts of new spatial relations are possible through the algorithmic mediation of labor relations? Where is the work of algorithms done? What are the historical roots of this process? What new forms of knowledge and power have been enabled (and constrained) by these systems? If you have any additional questions, please contact Jim Thatcher ( jethatch(a)uw.edu) Mark Graham (mark.graham(a)oii.ox.ac.uk) or Gillian Rose ( gillian.rose(a)open.ac.uk) For consideration of inclusion, please submit abstract to jethatch(a)uw.edu by October 15th, 2016. Please format your abstract in a text file of no more than 250 words, including a title, your name, institutional affiliation and email address in the document. ------------------------------------------ Mark Graham Professor of Internet Geography Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford Faculty Fellow The Alan Turing Institute Research Affiliate School of Geography and the Environment University of Oxford Visiting Fellow Department of Media and Communications London School of Economics and Political Science oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/people/graham> | geospace.co.uk <http://www.geospace.co.uk> | Information Geographies <http://geography.oii.ox.ac.uk> | wikichains.org <http://www.wikichains.org> | @geoplace <http://twitter.com/geoplace> | zerogeography blog <http://www.zerogeography.net/> | Connectivity, Inclusion and Inequality Group <http://cii.oii.ox.ac.uk/> | GEONET <http://geonet.oii.ox.ac.uk> <http://twitter.com/geoplace>

CFP: SAGE Handbook of Web History
by Ian Milligan 06 Sep '16

06 Sep '16

The web has now been with us for almost 25 years: new media is simply not that new anymore. It has developed to become an inherent part of our social, cultural, political, and social lives, and is accordingly leaving behind a detailed documentary record of society and events since the advent of widespread web archiving in 1996. These two key points lie at the heart of our in-preparation Handbook of Web History: that the history of the web itself needs to be studied, but also that its value as an incomparable historical record needs to be inquired as well. Within the last decade, considerable interest in the history of the Web has emerged. However, there is no comprehensive review of the field. Accordingly, our SAGE Handbook of Web History will provide an overview and point to future research directions. The editors, Niels Brügger, Megan Sapnar Ankerson, and Ian Milligan, have over twenty-five chapters in preparation. However, there are a few areas where we are soliciting additional chapters to round out our handbook. The focus of the chapters needs to be on the subject of Web history. * Business histories of the Web; * Web governance; * E-Literature or Web Art; * History of online social media; * Dot-com Start-ups * Memes * Hacking and Activism * Video on the Web * Asia and the Web If you are interested, we are soliciting 300 - 500 word abstracts by 10 October 2016. If you have any questions, or wish to discuss a potential submission, please e-mail us via Ian Milligan at i2millig(a)uwaterloo.ca. Final chapters will be a maximum of 7,000 words and would be due by 1 March 2017. -- *Ian Milligan* Assistant Professor, Department of History University of Waterloo | 200 University Ave W Waterloo ON N2L 3G1 http://ianmilligan.ca | @ianmilligan1 <https://twitter.com/ianmilligan1>

Register now! MoneyLab #3 Amsterdam, December 1/2
by Geert Lovink 06 Sep '16

06 Sep '16

MoneyLab #3 Failing Better Symposium | Workshops | Exhibition 1 - 2 December 2016 Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam A two-day symposium featuring talks, workshops and performances that confront the notion that finance is too big to fail. Themes Universal Basic Income, Feminist Economics, Global Finance, Financial Surveillance, Post-Work Society, Decentralized Democracy, Blockchain, Smart Contracts, Credit Unions, DAOs, Publishing Models, P2P Distribution, Copyright Law, Streaming Models, Platform Cooperativism, Community Currencies, Commons Transition. Background After Bitcoin forked, and remains in tatters, it is now blockchain technology that ignites visions of deregulated and decentralized organization, while it is simultaneously sanitized by commercial banks. Meanwhile the sharing and “service” economy lost its innocuous veneer and streaming services have failed and continue to fold the music industry. Despite the mutation of crowdfunding into crowd-equity and platform co-operatives, artists and designers continue to struggle to financially support themselves. All the while the financial mediators of the previous centuries continue to drag themselves onward into global debt. We are failing better, nonetheless. Workers’ unions are on the rise and numerous collectives are working together to collectively ensure their own wellbeing and build alternative models of social governance. The aspirations of grassroots organizations such as DiEM25, that promise to liberate social democracy from the stronghold of global finance, are gaining momentum across Europe. People’s parties such as Podemos and the Five Star Movement get closer to an electoral majority. This momentum has thrust radical economic alternatives onto center stage and some governments in Europe have begun experimenting with progressive policies such as a living working wage and a universal basic income. MoneyLab #3 will assess the ambition of financial provocations that have ignited to establish a terrain of social and political reform, from decentralized networks to state governments. The rift we find ourselves in goes much further than 'the banks’ and financial retaliation can be considered more than attempts to fail better. Confirmed Speakers Tori Abernathy, Steyn Bergs, Alex Foti, Max Haiven, Austin Houldsworth, Lewis Just, Dmytri Kleiner, Bindu De Knock, Simona Levi, Jeroen Van Loon, Silvio Lorusso, Nathalie Maréchal, Renzo Martens, Dan Mihaltianu, Caroline Nevejan, Patrice Riemens, Emily Rosamond, Trebor Scholz, Brett Scott, Cassie Thornton & Henry Warwick. Workshops Baltan Laboratories, Feminist Economics Department, Fine Art Financ€ Lab, Furtherfield, Nethood, PublishingLab & University of the Phoenix. Evening Program Thursday 1 Dec: Fiscal Drag Live, Mezrab, Amsterdam Friday 2 Dec: Failing Better Afterparty, Roest, Amsterdam Practical information Tickets: €10 per session € 30 per day € 60 two day pass Students: 50% discount on all tickets All tickets include lunch and evening program. Facebook Groups
by Mridula 06 Sep '16

06 Sep '16

Hi All, I recently found myself in bizarre situation on an India based Facebook Travel Group. I was a member since about a year, I would occasionally interact as well. The group description clearly said it was for non commercial activities, hotel, spa, airline reviews would be deleted. Then without any warning, they launched a commercial website by the same name (just adding 'world' to the name of the group), claiming they represent all the members of that FB group. The FAQ of the website has pitches to tourism boards and PR agencies. They had about 400 members, almost all related to travel. A lot of us were stunned! They just casually announced a commercial website based on a non-commercial FB group without a word to anyone whatsoever. Consent was not even in the picture. All hell broke loose after that. Now the admins claim that a lot of things happened inadvertently but the site is still up. Has anyone faced a similar situation before? This leads me to ask a few questions? 1. Does being an admin of a non-commercial FB group means you can launch a commercial venture based on it? 2. Is this a violation of FB TOS? I tried to understand the FB TOS for groups but I am not very successful. 3. If this is not against the TOS then some other group that added me will do the same in the future. And that will be a big pain. I need to go and manually remove myself from all those groups that keep adding me! Sharing here so that I may get some clarity from the community. Call For Papers: NCA PreConference on Media and Class in the 21st Century 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, Philadelphia, PA Submission deadline: September 9, 2016 Help build a new conversation on contemporary relationships between media and class, creating new definitions of 'class' in the process. This interactive NCA preconference seminar on Media & Class in the 21st Century will bring together 25 scholars from many communication subfields working at the intersection of media and class, with specific focus on how understandings of class are changing in contemporary media contexts. This daylong seminar will consist of two plenary sessions, brief presentations of position papers by participants, small group interactions and an interactive lunch that encourages scholars to meet others who share their interests. All participants in the preconference will be work-shopping and presenting their ideas to each other. Prospective participants should submit brief position papers* drawing upon empirical or critical approaches in an exploration of contemporary and/or historical issues at the intersection of media and class. * NOTE: 1 to 2-page drafts are acceptable at the time of submission; 2 to 5 page papers must be submitted within two weeks of acceptance, and will be circulated to other participants in advance. Position papers should be submitted as email attachments in MS Word to Erika Polson and Lynn Schofield Clark at: Media.and.Class(a)gmail.com . The deadline for submissions is September 9, 2016.
