They are a means by which close relationships are maintained, new relationships are formed, information is acquired, entertainment is delivered, and work gets done. As such, mobile devices have become an important new site for social science research, and they have simultaneously inserted themselves into traditional research sites in which quantitative and qualitative data are collected. The implications for how data are collected and analyzed are vast and affect researchers working in a variety of traditions. For those working in behavioural science traditions, the large caches of detailed and highly personal behavioural log data contained on mobile devices raise new opportunities along with weighty ethical and methodological challenges. For those working in interpretive traditions, the role of mobile devices in many aspects of social life requires a rethinking of research contexts and modes. Mobile devices can also act as new tools for data collection, allowing participants to share and create social meaning, and researchers to conduct on-screen surveying, experience sampling, field experiments, technology probes, and so forth. We seek out scholars who are methodologically reflective about the use of mobile methods in their research, whether it be to better understand the mobile and mediated environment or to use the mobile devices as a lens into broader social, political or health issues, questions, and interventions. We seek diverse mobile methods scholarship that is innovative, rigorous, creative, and/or exploratory. Submissions that develop or advance new mobile methodological approaches are encouraged, as are articles that explore epistemological issues related to mobile methods. The articles in the special section may include, but are not limited to, the following themes in the study of mobile methods: • Ethical issues in mobile data collection • Multi-method approaches to mobile data collection • Integrating mobile devices into interviews • Mobile data collection in field experiments • Mobile ethnography • Mobile methods beyond the smartphone and tablet • Ethically tracking behaviour using mobile devices • Implications of mobile methods for social science • Experiential sampling using mobile devices • Opportunities and constraints with on-screen mobile surveys • Analyzing large and complex behavioural data collected from mobile devices • Methods that place mobile use into broader social and situational contexts • Location tracking in mobile research • Mobile photo elicitation • Ethical and methodological issues surrounding the development of data collection apps • Mobile systems/infrastructure analysis • Critical methods to mobile data collection JOURNAL REVIEW PROCESS AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES For guidelines on preparation of manuscripts and criteria for acceptance, please follow Mobile Media & Communication Submission Guidelines (https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/mobile-media- communication/journal202140#submission-guidelines). Please submit an abstract of 700-800 words that clearly states the main argument and evidence of the paper and the primary literatures it is building upon. Also include the names, titles, and contact information for 2-3 suggested reviewers. We are excited by the interest people have expressed in the Early Career Scholars Workshop that will be part of AoIR 2016 as a preconference. Please remember to register for the workshop when you register to attend the conference. The workshop aims to provide junior faculty and researchers with the opportunity to network with peers and senior scholars and to address matters pertinent to them. PhD scholarship in internet research with a focus on the United States (re-advertisement) The Department of Media, Cognition, and Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Peoples’ Internet (PIN) project sponsored by the Carlsberg Foundation. The scholarship is expected to begin November 1, 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter. Description of the project “The Peoples’ Internet – Market, state, and civil society in China, Europe, and the United States” will undertake a comparative study of the internet in different world regions. Digital networks are among the most flexible and universally applicable technologies ever invented by humans. But the many significant variations in the social uses of the internet around the world remain poorly understood. The PIN project compares the current state and future potential of the internet in three centers of the global economy and world politics – China, Europe, and the United States – focusing on the interplay of civil society with the other two key sectors of modern societies: market and state. The PhD candidate will be an integral part of the PIN research group. The PhD candidate will participate both in formal project events and in informal deliberations throughout the candidate’s affiliation with the project; will have the opportunity both to pursue personal research interests and to contribute to the overall theoretical and methodological framework of PIN; and will join a wider interdisciplinary research environment centered in the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Communication and Computing and its research group on Digital Communication and Aesthetics. In addition to coursework and other institutional obligations, the PhD candidate will undertake the following main activities: • six months of ethnographic fieldwork in the USA • review of regulatory regimes and cultural traditions in the fieldwork area • participation in analyses of population surveys • contributions to the dissemination of project findings and other outreach. The successful PhD candidate must be fluent in spoken and written academic English. Prior experience with cross-cultural studies and/or survey research within media and communication studies will be considered an advantage, but is not a requirement. It is expected that the successful candidate will be present, part of the research group, and engaged in the activities of PIN on a daily basis. Apply *with a PhD project proposal* by August 26. ++Job description++ The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) of the Faculty of Humanities is looking for a PhD candidate to join the ERC-funded project 'Data Activism: The Politics of Big Data According to Civil Society' (DATACTIVE), with Dr. Stefania Milan as Principal Investigator. DATACTIVE investigates citizens’ engagement with massive data collection, seeking to understand how activism evolves in the time of datafication. As datafication progressively invades all spheres of contemporary society, citizens grow increasingly aware of the critical role of information as the new fabric of social life. This awareness gives rise to new sociotechnical practices taking a critical approach to ‘big data’ and massive data collection, which fall under the rubric of ‘data activism’. Data activism takes at least two forms: re-active data activism, whereby people increasingly resist the threats to civil rights that derive from corporate privacy intrusion and government surveillance (e.g., by means of technical fixes such as encryption); and pro-active data activism, whereby citizens take advantage of the possibilities for campaigning and social change that data availability provides (e.g., data-based advocacy). The DATACTIVE project explores how activism broadly defined evolves in the age of big data. We take a critical look at, among others, citizen empowerment through data; civil society’s privacy practices; surveillance and internet activism; governance of data flows and internet infrastructure; open data and civic tech networks. You will join an interdisciplinary team working under the leadership of Dr. Stefania Milan (the Principal Investigator; https://stefaniamilan.net) and collaboratively examining the emerging dynamics of data activism at the intersection of its social and technological dimensions. We offer a multidisciplinary, interactive and international research environment in a leading department (Communication and Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam currently ranks number 8 in the QS World Rankings). ++Requirements++ The ideal candidate should have: * a demonstrable affinity with one or the combination of the following areas of research: social movements/grassroots activism’s engagement with data, digital technology and citizen participation, datafication and digital citizenship, democratic agency and algorithmic power, social effects of algorithm discrimination, (participatory) governance of data flows; * a Master’s or equivalent degree in one of the following disciplines: sociology, political science, communication sciences, media studies, and neighboring disciplines, preferably with expertise in one of the following fields: social movement studies, digital sociology, sociology of knowledge and/or culture, international relations, governance studies, critical internet studies, critical data studies; * demonstrable expertise in qualitative/ethnographic and/or quantitative research methods; familiarity (or willingness to acquire it) with data processing techniques and digital methods. Crypto Design Challenge for Deep Web Designers The Deep Web evokes images of an underworld that cannot bear the light of day. Yet this hidden realm contains an estimated 96% of all the content to be found circulating online. The first international Crypto Design Challenge shout out to artists, designers, researchers and visionaries to dive in and create new images of the Deep Web. Data leaks such as the Panama Papers and sensational press coverage on cybercriminals operating in a virtual legal vacuum maintain a dramatic image of online encrypted channels as a lawless cove, populated by bandits, predators and pirates. However, the Deep Web is so much more than an online black market, teeming with scandals and illegal activity. In fact, an estimated 96% of all the content online is not accessible through search engines, including encrypted databases, secret wikis and information that has not been indexed. This realm also empowered many citizens during the Arab Spring, providing encrypted communication channels to coordinate protest movements. Indeed, it harbors important communication tools for human rights NGOs, political dissidents, activists, and every other user who – for any reason whatsoever – wishes not to be tracked, stalked, and spied on. It is one of the remaining bastions of individual privacy, against corporate and governmental snooping and data mining, a place where anyone can remain anonymous. Three years after the Snowden revelations, it is safe to conclude that the focus on surveillance and individual privacy has not lead to a thriving debate on the infrastructure, imagination and accessibility to information on the web. Public outrage about privacy and data leaks has failed to spark the collective imagination. So You Want to Be a Deep Web Designer? The iceberg metaphor affects popular understanding of the Deep Web, as the inaccessible dangers of the murky “underwater” world. *REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR:* *Culture and politics of data visualisation: a one-day conference, 10th October 2016, University of Sheffield (*** please note change of date ***) *As data become more and more abundant, the main way that most people get access to them is through their visualisation. To date, much academic research about data visualisation has focused on individualistic and micro-level factors like memorability and speed of comprehension and has not attended to the social, cultural, political work that visualisations do, the contexts in which they circulate, and the mutually constitutive relationships between visualisations and their contexts. More recently, critical perspectives have begun to emerge, which point to the ways in which visualisations can privilege certain viewpoints, perpetuate existing power relations or create new ones, and play a role in the generation and modification of knowledge, cognition, perceptions of objectivity and opaque forms of governance and control. These critiques exist alongside the apparently contradictory belief that data visualisations are a way of ‘doing good with data’, making data transparent and accessible and so enabling greater inclusion in data-driven conversations and societies. This one-day conference addresses the culture and politics of data visualisation, brings critical thought into dialogue with the practice and potential of visualising data and considers how they might inform each other. In this way, it is neither a ‘show & tell’ nor a critique of datavis as ideologically implicated, but a space for productive exchange between critical thinking and datavis practice. We invite you to join us to consider these questions: * How do data visualisations get made, used, circulated and consumed, and what are the implications of these processes for society, culture and politics? * What problems and opportunities does the spread of data visualisation bring with it? * To what extent do data visualisations get used in the interests of power or to act against power? * How can the belief that visualisation makes data transparent and accessible be brought together productively with critiques of visualisation-as-control? * How should we account for the affective dimensions of data visualisation? * How can visualisation be used in socially useful ways? * What does critically-informed, reflective data visusalisation look like? And based on what standards should this be done? At ARTICLE19 we firmly believe that the Internet should be an instrument for freedom of expression and access to information. Help us to protect and strengthen the Internet as a rights enabling environment! The Programme Assistant (PA) supports ARTICLE 19’s work on freedom of expression and information on the Internet. The PA will oversee project management for our core digital rights grants, and engage in day to day implementation of activities in ARTICLE 19’s Digital projects on Internet governance, specifically ICANN, the IETF/IRTF, IEEE, ITU as well as work on mainstreaming the usage of HTTP status code 451. You would be part of a growing, dynamic team in which there is a space for creativity, reflection and professional growth.
