The Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies hosts five international research fellows https://www.westminster.ac.uk/news/2016/the-westminster-institute-for-advan… Five scholars have been awarded fellowships at the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) during the academic year 2016/17: Dr Arwid Lund (Sweden), Dr Bingqing Xia (China), Dr Claudio Celis Bueno (Chile), Dr Ergin Bulut (Turkey), Dr Lynete Lusike Mukhongo (Kenya). All five are experts in the research field of critical digital and social media studies. The Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies is an academic space for independent critical thinking beyond borders at the University of Westminster in London - http://www.westminster.ac.uk/wias Its primary research focus is on critical digital and social media studies. Professor Christian Fuchs, Director of the IAS, comments: “Digital and social media have become ubiquitous in everyday life and society. Critical studies of data and digital media’s role in society’s power structures are much needed today. The IAS is excited to be able to host five distinguished international experts in critical digital media studies during the academic year 2016/17. The research fellows’ projects focus on various economic and political aspects of digital media in global society. They show the importance of critical thinking and critical research about the Internet in the information age”. Dr Claudio Celis Bueno is a postdoc researcher at Diego Portales University in Chile. His fellowship project will start on 5 September 2016, and will focus on the analysis of the role of digital media in the movies of the filmmaker and video artist Harun Farocki. He comments: “My research focuses on the relationships between images and power in contemporary society. The work of Harun Farocki offers a powerful tool in order to analyse the current role of images in contemporary society. Farocki explores the role of the visual in labour processes and how new algorithmic machines replace both manual labour and information labour. I will examine the role of operative images in Farocki’s documentary films and video installations. An operational image is a type of image that is part of a technical operation. Examples include images intended for surveillance, medical, industrial, logistic, or military purposes”. Dr Bingqing Xia, who is an assistant professor at Macau University of Science and Technology, will commence her IAS fellowship on 12 December 2016. Her research topic is the study of the Chinese Internet economy in context of crisis tendencies. Dr Xia describes her fellowship project: “In 2015, the number of Chinese Internet users had reached 670 million. Since 2015, when the Chinese economy slowed down, much attention has been given to the Internet industries. The Chinese Internet industry at the moment especially has a focus on O2O (online to offline) services and big data. Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (BAT) are the three largest Internet companies in China. BAT planned to invest a lot in new O2O services. My research asks if the Chinese Internet economy is a big bubble or not and what role low-level technical labour plays in it”. Dr Arwid Lund, from Uppsala University in Sweden, is studying discourses on open knowledge during his IAS fellowship. He completed the first part of his stay in July 2016 and will commence the second part on 3 April 2017. He comments: “The movement for Open Knowledge is a broad movement spanning new publishing models in science, commons-based ways of producing software, knowledge and design, e-governance and big data analytics. My project conducts a detailed analysis of what the open knowledge movement’s ideological landscape looks like. It asks: How does the movement understand its political position and mission? How do open knowledge activists assess commercial social media and big data services and the commercial digital economy in general?” Dr Lynete Lusike Mukhongo is a senior lecturer at Moi University in Kenya. Her fellowship research, that will start on 17 May 2016, will study how Kenya’s announcement that it wants to leave the International Criminal Court has been discussed on social media. Dr Mukhongo says about her IAS fellowship project: “The International Criminal Court (ICC) was established by the Rome Statute which came into force in 2002. Its jurisdiction is to prosecute international crimes against humanity. Kenya signed the Rome statute in 1999 and ratified it in 2005. There have been calls by the African Union for withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. The study aims to undertake an analysis of how users in Kenya communicate about this political issue. The study wants to identify diverging views among Kenyans on Twitter on themes related to justice, accountability, imperialism, emancipation, Africanness, postcolonial identity, and African states’ threats to withdraw from the ICC”. Dr Ergin Bulut is an assistant professor at Koc University in Turkey. He will start his IAS fellowship on 1 June 2017. It will focus on the analysis of labour conditions in the video game industry. Dr Bulut comments on the importance of studying the digital game industry: “There is much hype regarding the potentials of creative economy and creative production. Young people tend to regard video game development as a dream job. Our society also preaches that young people should do what they love and be ready to work for free if they really want to have a job in the video game industry or other creative industries. Second Call for Papers to a Special Issue of Design Issues: Organizing provocation, conflict and appropriation: The role of the designer in making publics Because of the importance of the role and embodiment of the designer/artist in making publics, this special issue draws attention to reflexive practices in Art & Design, and questions how these practices can be embedded in the formations and operations of publics and design practices. More specifically, the special issue aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? This issue will contain the best papers received and presented in the corresponding workshop in the Participatory Design Conference in Aarhus in August 2016 (PDC2016) entitled “Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation”, as well as other invited contributions. In the morning session, SIG-SI will bring a perspective that focuses on the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) in work and play across all areas of ASIS&T. In the afternoon session, SIG-USE will focus on information related activities from different research perspectives and explores the significance of information seeking and use on our lives. Submissions may include empirical, critical, conceptual and theoretical papers and posters, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. The combined workshop will allow networking between members of both SIGs during the day. MORNING: THE SOCIAL INFORMATICS OF WORK AND PLAY (SIG SI) Co-sponsored by the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics This year’s conference theme is “creating knowledge, enhancing lives through information & technology.” This is a particularly apposite theme for SIG-SI, because the social impacts of ICT and the complex relations among people, technologies, and the contexts of ICT design, implementation, and use have long been core concerns of social informatics. The SIG-SI morning session, our 12th annual gathering at ASIS&T annual meetings, will bring a critical perspective that focuses on the social aspects of ICT that cuts across all areas of ASIS&T This year, we are particularly interested in papers that investigate the social informatics of work and play. We define “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. We also define “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (e.g., paper, books, etc.), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include papers and posters that explore the ways in which people’s uses of ICT affect their practices and behaviors while at work, play, and engaged in their social lives. We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme, but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. It acknowledges social, individual and technological perspectives on the roles and flows that information takes as part of physical and digital work. The broad approach relates to the conference theme with a focus on information behavior (IB) or on information practices (IP) in connection to workplaces. Earlier generations were accustomed to stable and localized work; now work activities and contexts have and are radically changing. During their work life, people may experience several career changes, are expected to learn new skills and adapt to new ideas as well as manage the increasingly fluid boundaries between work and leisure. Moreover, much of information and data are internetworked and accessible simultaneously by multiple mobile devices supporting networked communities anyplace, anywhere, anytime. This challenges both the creation and consumption of information used for work – or at work; it also affects how, when and where people work, as well as their productivity, collegiality and innovativeness. Despite, or perhaps due to, the advances in technology, today’s workplaces remain challenged by how to create, discover, share, value and enhance information and knowledge at and for work; and, how to design and manage the systems that support these functions, which are so critical to organizationally effective and individually rewarding work. The issues are many, from the consequences of new devices that are stretching the ways that an organization works, to the efficacy dynamics (stress, motivation, collaboration, productivity, age, etc.) and to the new skills and expertise required to work in such changing and changeable environments. Information is indispensable in many, if not all, workplace activities; as a resource for getting work done as well as for learning, managing change, developing and maintaining processes and creating professional networks. Specific issues to be addressed depend on the interest of the participants and the issues they bring into the workshop. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. IUI 2017 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics. Ethical challenges in qualitative research using Facebook

Hi AoIR Community, I am a PhD Candidate and I have run into some ethical issues in my research, which I am looking for some guidance on. I am exploring Facebook user perceptions of sole mother poverty and welfare in Australia, focusing on a period of welfare debate in which sole parent pension amendments were introduced (May 2012-January 2013). I'm undertaking a discourse analysis of a subset of comments across four categories of public pages and groups- media, political parties and ministers, welfare/charity organisations and sole mother networks- that were published in response to the amendments. Although Facebook Data Policy considers this information public, Internet research ethics guidelines and other academic papers point to a number of ethical issues around publishing the comments of users without obtaining their consent. As I am doing a post-structural discourse analysis this is unavoidable unless I consider paraphrasing or similar techniques that aim to protect the identity of users, however this strategy raises questions of scientific rigor and does not seem to be one that is widely used or indeed fool proof. There are also issues around contacting users for consent, for example users could be underage or belong to other vulnerable groups. I am left with two options if I take a worst case scenario approach to these dilemmas - either tweak my research question (for example to look at the posts of public figures and organisations such as media outlets) or consider alternative research methods which do not present the ethical challenges of discourse analysis or other methods of close analysis, but allow me to answer my research question (What were the Facebook user perceptions of sole mother poverty and welfare in Australia between May 2012 and January 2013?). Any suggestions for readings, tips or advice regarding ways forward including methods would be most appreciated. Many thanks in advance, Emily
