Dear Colleagues, Please consider submitting to this SI, and forwarding to your relevant contacts. Apologies for cross-posting. ? International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction Special Issue: Following User Pathways in the International Journal of Human Computer Interaction http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/est/hihc-cfb-8.2016 Call for Papers Social media and the resulting tidal wave of available data have changed how researchers analyze communities at scale. However, the full potential for science has not yet been achieved, despite the popularity of social media analysis in the past decade. To date, few researchers invest in cross-platform analyses due to various reasons, e.g. variations in curating data, disparate methods and tools, complexity of cross-platform and mixed method analysis, methodological conflicts arising from mixed method studies, etc. "Following user pathways: Using cross platform and mixed methods analysis in social media studies" brings together a community of researchers and professionals to address methodological, analytical, conceptual, and technological challenges and opportunities of mapping user across platforms with mixed method analysis in social media ecosystems. See the full call and scope at: http://explore.tandfonline.com/cfp/est/hihc-cfb-8.2016? Call for Papers The Journal of Emerging Learning Design special issue: The Digital Humanities Submissions due date On/before November 14, 2016. Editors Jerry Alan Fails (Boise State University) and AJ Kelton (Montclair State University) Introduction The Journal of Emerging Learning Design is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for its first Special Issue: The Digital Humanities. With roots reaching back as far as 1940, the term Digital Humanities came into wide usage in late 2012 and has slowly risen in popularity since then. A Google Scholar search for “digital humanities” yields just under 30 results during the year 2000 and over 4,700 during 2015. The increase in the number of published articles in 15 years is second only to the diversity of the research that is included. About the ELDj The Journal of Emerging Learning Design (ELDj) is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal that provides a platform for academics and practitioners to explore emerging learning design theories, concepts, and issues and their implications at national and international levels. An outgrowth of the annual Emerging Learning Design Conference <http://eld.montclair.edu/>, which makes its home at Montclair State University (MSU), the ELDj invites scholarly communication in the emerging learning design field and will present best practices in design and implementation by offering articles that present, propose, or review engaging and dynamic approaches to pedagogy and how technology can better enhance it. More details can be found at http://eldj.montclair.edu/about/ About the Special Issue The ELDj has purposefully kept the focus of the theme for this special issue broad. The intent is to continue to break down traditional academic silos and allow for an open dialogue and sharing with respect to what is considered the Digital Humanities. ELDj is intentionally taking a broad consideration for what is included in the digital humanities with the clear understanding that this issue, and the articles within, will contribute to this growing field and provide a groundwork for further reflection and research. Timeline Deadline for Submission: November 14, 2016 Notification of Acceptance: March 1st, 2017 Final Revised Submission: April 21, 2017 Publication: June 2, 2017 Publication and Presentation The issue will be published prior to, and featured at, the 7th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference (ELDc17) on June 2nd, 2017. Based on when a submission is accepted, authors may be offered the opportunity to present their research at the 7th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference in June, 2017. Presentations must be given in an appropriate presentation format for the conference: panel (full conference audience), workshop (120 minutes), concurrent (45 minutes), or Sparks! (5 minutes to full conference audience). Submission Details Manuscripts should be the appropriate length for the material being presented. - Full paper manuscripts can vary from 2500-4500 words in addition to an abstract of 250 words and a works cited section of appropriate length. - Briefs or Trends papers have a limit of 1000 words. A description of each type of submission and guidelines can be found at http://eldj.montclair.edu/submission-guidelines/ <http://eldj.montclair.edu/submission-guidelines/>ELDj uses a double-blind, peer-review process. Submissions should not have been published previously or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors should review the above linked guidelines for important and relevant information. Submissions should be sent to eldj(a)mail.montclair.edu: questions and information requests may be sent to the Editors at the same address. -- ----- AJ Kelton Director of Emerging & Instructional Technology College of Humanities and Social Sciences - Montclair State University Doctoral Candidate, ABD Educational Communication and Technology - New York University ---------- Emerging Learning Design 2017 Conference Chair http://eld.montclair.edu Twitter: @ELDConf <http://twitter.com/ELDConf> Hashtag: #ELD17 ELD Question? New out in paperback - Tell Everyone: Why We Share and Why It Matters
by Hermida, Alfred 30 Aug '16

30 Aug '16

Friends and colleagues Delighted to share the news that the paperback edition of my award-winning book, Tell Everyone: Why We Share and Why It Matters, has just been published by PenguinRandomHouse. Just in time for the new academic year, the book unpacks how social media is fuelling our human urge to share, affecting the information we depend on to make smart decisions, from choosing politicians to doing business to raising money for charity. Tell Everyone delves into contemporary culture to reveal how social media has become the planet’s nervous system—amplifying the power of individuals, informing our choices and shaping how we learn about our world. Written with journalistic flair but with academic rigour, the book is an ideal textbook for undergraduate courses on media and society, social media or digital journalism. It has appeared on the reading list on courses on Technology Reporting at SMU in the US, on the Psychology of Self in Social Media at the University of British Columbia in Canada, and on Social Media Theory and Practice at the University of Southern Denmark. And it is retails in the US for just $18.00: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/225849/tell-everyone-by-alfred-herm… What the critics are saying: “Delivers fascinating insights … wonderfully clear eyed about contemporary culture… As Hermida moves from topic to topic – politics, marketing, revolutions, labour unrest, etc. – he delivers many similarly thought-provoking insights.” The Globe and Mail “This thoughtful and often amusing social history of social media shows how the abundance of information available today affects how we understand and give context to world events . . . [This] book succeeds by using real-life examples — from Tahrir Square to Anthony Weiner’s sexting mishap.” Toronto Star “Tell Everyone is an easy read with lots of takeaways…one of the first books to successfully explain the sharing logic of social media.” Digital Journalism review “A remarkable book characterized by smart insights, a lively narrative and impressive research.” J-source.ca<http://J-source.ca> “An excellent analysis of how social media is changing social and media dynamics.” John Stackhouse, former editor-in-chief of The Globe and Mail. [REQUEST] What are internet research's iconic diagrams?
by Alex Leavitt 29 Aug '16

29 Aug '16

If you were to pick a handful of the most iconic diagrams across internet research, theory, and history, what would they be? I'm trying to compile as many diagrams as possible. They could also be graphs, charts, photographs, drawings, etc. They could come from sociology, anthropology, computer science, physics, etc. They could also relate to social theories that are particularly prescient for internet studies. For example, I think the diagram of distributed networks in Paul Baran's 1964 "On Distributed Communications" ( http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/research_memoranda/2006/RM3420.pdf, diagram on p. 16 of the PDF) is a great example of what I'm looking for. For another example in the theoretical realm, perhaps the "two-step flow" model from Katz & Lazarfeld's 1955 Personal Influence ( https://www.utwente.nl/cw/theorieenoverzicht/Theory%20Clusters/Mass%20Media…, scroll down for the diagram). Does anyone else have pointers to any other iconic diagrams? CFP: Hackademia! Activism, Scholarship & the Internet (AoIR satellite event)
by Nathalie Marechal 29 Aug '16

29 Aug '16

*Call for participants: Hackademia! Activism, Scholarship & the Internet* Tuesday, October 4, 2016, 2-6pm Berlin, Germany (location TBA) *Workshop organizers:* Nathalie Maréchal, University of Southern California/Ranking Digital Rights Jillian York, Centre for Internet and Human Rights/Onlinecensorship.org Many Internet researchers straddle the line between academic Internet research and digital rights advocacy, including hacker communities. This workshop aims to strengthen the ties between these two modes of inquiry, leveraging AoIR 2016’s location in Berlin to invite digital rights activists from outside the academy to engage with the scholarly conversation. While many scholars and activists express interest in cross-sector collaboration, there are a number of barriers to such efforts, including mismatches between the career incentives, funding mechanisms, and timelines prevalent in the academic and NGO worlds. Nevertheless, the organizers of this half-day workshop have found that collaboration between civil society and academia are crucial to both research and to change. The first portion of the workshop (two hours) aims to: - Explore what “research” means to scholars and to activists - Surface the barriers to cross-sector collaboration - Brainstorm strategies for transcending such barriers - Provide a networking forum for scholars and activists working on similar or complementary projects The second portion of the workshop (two hours) will include a dive into the world of commercial content moderation. Using a fishbowl format, we will hear from experts looking at the the topic from a variety of angles: as an issue of labor, of free expression, and of information hegemony. Participants will be encouraged to take part in the discussion and share new ideas for research and advocacy. *Interested participants should complete the registration form at https://goo.gl/forms/9isVlduYmkeqMeG43 <https://goo.gl/forms/9isVlduYmkeqMeG43> by Sept 1, 2016. *The organizers hope to have roughly equal participation from academia and from civil society, and will use the requested information to plan the details of the workshop. Questions can be addressed to Nathalie Maréchal, marechal(a)usc.edu, at any time. We look forward to seeing you in Berlin! Hi Alex You might want to include Charles Minard's map of Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign of 1812. The graphic is notable for its representation in two dimensions of six types of data: the number of Napoleon's troops; distance; temperature; the latitude and longitude; direction of travel; and location relative to specific dates.
