Job announcement: Professor of Communication, Deakin U, Australia
by Matthew Allen 23 Sep '16

23 Sep '16

Hi everyone The School of Communication and Creative Arts, Deakin University is hiring a tenured full Professor of Communication to join us in 2017 and, by the end of that year, become part of the School Executive, leading the Communication Academic group. We would welcome international applications. Communication, which has around 20 academic staff, is responsible for the four B Communication courses (journalism, public relations, digital media and advertising (new course in 2018)); most of the staff in the group are from PR and Journalism; some media staff sit in the Screen and Design group. There is a strong Master of Communication as well and, of course, many doctoral students. Communication research at Deakin is ranked at world standard by the Australia Research Council (ERA 2015). Deakin as a university is in the top 2-3% internationally (depending on your ranking company of choice!) The role is a leadership one, and will involve cultural change and development, as well as ongoing personal excellence in research. We have made some quite big changes in the school recently and, as a result, there are strong opportunities to build new directions and lead significant improvement and join me and other leaders in developing the school. There is no particular kind of Communication specialisation required - the term is broadly used in Australia and might include traditional communication and media but also politics, history, sociology; a knowledge of professional public communication industries would be of interest, however, and of course internet and digital would be self-evidently important. I would be delighted if you can promote the availability of this position to your networks and, of course, to consider applying for it yourselves! The easiest link to the job is https://www.deakin.edu.au/ about-deakin/work-at-deakin/job-vacancies and let me know if you want to discuss it or suggest individuals who I can approach directly. Best to email hos-cca(a)deakin.edu.au PS - hello to all my old friends in AoIR - I miss you! -- Professor Matthew Allen, internet critic, researcher and educator life member AoIR <http://aoir.org> This is my independent email account and may or may not be answered swiftly. In my role as Head of School, Communication and Creative Arts, Deakin University, matthew.allen(a)deakin.edu.au is my personal / research email; hos-cca(a)deakin.edu.au is my official Head of School email.

2 PhD Positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam – Digital Vigilantism in China and Russia
by Daniel Trottier 22 Sep '16

*2 PhD Positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam – Digital Vigilantism in China and Russia* *www.academictransfer.com/employer/EUR/vacancy/36177/lang/en/ <https://www.academictransfer.com/employer/EUR/vacancy/36177/lang/en/>* *www.academictransfer.com/employer/EUR/vacancy/36179/lang/en/ <https://www.academictransfer.com/employer/EUR/vacancy/36179/lang/en/>* *Job description* We are looking for two highly motivated PhD Candidates who wish to conduct their PhD research in the context of a research project funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) entitled *Digital Vigilantism: Mapping the terrain and assessing societal impacts.* As a PhD Candidate of the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC), you will have ample opportunity to collaborate with renowned academics with an international and interdisciplinary approach. A Master’s degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities is required, as well as wide-ranging knowledge of and affinity for the sociology of crime, media and culture as well as qualitative methods of social scientific research. In addition to an understanding of the latest developments in the field, the candidates must possess didactic skills and an affinity for working with students. Candidates who take a proven interest in the field of surveillance, visibility and vigilantism studies in particular are preferred. *Project description Digital Vigilantism* Digital media enable citizens to persecute fellow citizens, and this process can transcend national boundaries. This project examines digital vigilantism (DV), both as a mediated practice and as a grounded social problem. DV is a process where citizens are collectively offended by other citizen activity, and respond through coordinated retaliation on digital media, including mobile devices and social media platforms. The offending acts range from mild breaches of social protocol to terrorist acts and participation in riots. The vigilantism includes a ‘naming and shaming’ visibility where users publish the targeted individual’s personal details on a public site, resulting in harassment, death threats, and other harms. DV is an interdisciplinary concern that requires both conceptual and empirical advancement. Drawing on previous research on digital media culture, online policing and surveillance, the project considers the cultural factors surrounding DV, in contradistinction to offline vigilantism. It also considers the social impact on the various actors involved, as well as how this complicates conventional policing and state power. The researchers will first develop a theoretical framework that will advance the frontier of knowledge of DV in relation to several key disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. Next researchers will deliver a comprehensive content and discourse analysis of news media as well as other important sources of public discourse on the matter. This will be followed by in-depth semi-structured interviews with an array of relevant social actors in The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Russia and China. This includes participants in DV campaigns, targets of DV, police, policymakers and media platform operators. These theoretical and empirical findings will advance a conceptually rigorous and nuanced understanding of the motivations and practices that surround digital vigilantism, alongside recommendations for stakeholders. *Research duties (80%)* - Conducting PhD research within the framework of the *Digital Vigilantism* project; - Contributing to the data collection and data analysis of the project; - Publishing and presenting research results in the form of articles in international peer reviewed journals and papers at international conferences; - Writing a dissertation; - Defending the dissertation to complete the doctoral degree; - Assisting in the organisation of workshops and other knowledge utilisation activities - Performing organisational tasks in the context of ESHCC, in particular with regard to the Department of Media and Communication; - Taking part in seminars, workshops, etc. that are organised by the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) as well as the research schools and scholarly associations of which ERMeCC is part. *Teaching duties (20%)* - Preparing and giving lessons within the context of the various degree programmes in the field of Media and Communication provided by the ESHCC; - Monitoring the literature and integrating new insight into the lessons; - Supervising and coaching students; - Pointing out possible improvements and integrating them into teaching methods and/or the content of the lessons given; - Contributing to the evaluation of the lessons, both in terms of structure and execution; - Participating in committees or working groups, as well as performing designated organisational tasks. *Requirements* - A Master’s degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities, preferably a research master; - Wide-ranging knowledge of and affinity with the sociology of crime, media and culture and with qualitative methods of social science research, such as textual analyses and interviews; - Proven affinity for qualitative empirical research, as evidenced by your master’s thesis, publications, research plans and other projects; - Didactic potential. Teaching experience is considered an advantage; - A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in various disciplines and to increase the ability to teach a wide range of subjects within the faculty’s degree programme; - Organisational experience and skills; - Proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF). - Proficiency in spoken and written Russian or Mandarin. Native speakers are preferred. *Conditions of employment * Employment starts January 1, 2016. The conditions of employment correspond with the “CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten” (CAO NU). REMINDER CFP: Countercultures of Data - Special Issue of Philosophy & Technology
by Anna Lauren Hoffmann 21 Sep '16

21 Sep '16

Just a wanted to remind folks about this CFP - the deadline is a little over a month away and I'd love to see some AoIR or AoIR-ajacent folks submit! -Anna ----- Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on Countercultures of Data Guest Editor Anna Lauren Hoffmann, School of Information – University of California, Berkeley About the Issue 25 years ago, Sandra Harding—in her influential book Whose Science? Whose Knowledge? Thinking from Women’s Lives—detailed and extended critical debates surrounding knowledge production and practices in science and technology. Collectively, these “countercultures of science” confronted the “problematics, agendas, ethics, and consequences” of scientific and technological production head on. Today, these same perspectives offer insight into the realm of data science, as philosophers, scholars, and practitioners alike grapple with ethical questions in a world where discourse, design, and governance increasingly revolve around “big” data and quantifiable knowledge. This special issue will bring together rigorous conceptual and theoretical perspectives on what might best be called—following Harding—emerging “countercultures of data.” In particular, this issue will further critical and philosophical thinking about the theories, methods, institutions, and technological arrangements that underwrite or support data science in various industries and forms. Combined, contributions to the special issue will put forward a more realistic assessment of possible futures for a data driven world. We invite submissions related (but not limited) to: Race and Data Science Theories of Property, Labor, and Data Political Economies of Data Data and Imperialism Feminist Perspectives on Data Science Data, Bodies, and Disability Data, Infrastructure, and the Environment Data, Philosophy, and the Law Communities and Data Data and Queer Subjects Data and/as Human Subjects in Research Data Science and Epistemic Justice Timetable for Submissions October 24, 2016: Deadline for paper submissions December 21, 2016: Deadline reviews papers February 6, 2017: Deadline revised papers 2017: Publication of the special issue Submission Details To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select the special article type: “COUNTERCULTURES OF DATA” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editor. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. (The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions.) About the Journal The journal addresses the expanding scope and unprecedented impact of technologies, in order to improve the critical understanding of the conceptual nature and practical consequences, and hence provide the conceptual foundations for their fruitful and sustainable developments. The journal welcomes high-quality submissions, regardless of the tradition, school of thought or disciplinary background from which they derive. The journal's Editor-in-Chief is Luciano Floridi (Oxford). Contact For any further information please contact: Anna Lauren Hoffmann - annalauren(a)berkeley.edu
