It starts with the conviction that after the great Bank Robbery of 2008, we can no longer only criticize financial capitalism but need to foster alternatives. On Thursday 1 and Friday 2 December, Moneylab#3 will bring together a cacophony of artistic and economic experimentations that offer strategies for the 99%. A two-day symposium of talks, workshops, performances and parties that tackle the assumption that there is anything too big to fail. Workers’ unions are on the rise and numerous collectives are working together to collectively insure their own wellbeing and build alternative models of social governance. The aspirations of grassroots organizations such as Diem25, that promise to liberate social democracy from the stronghold of global finance, are gaining momentum across Europe. People’s parties such as Podemos and 15M even neared an electoral majority. This momentum has thrust radical economic alternatives into the central stage and some governments in Europe have begun experimenting with progressive policies such as a living working wage and a universal basic income. Moneylab#3 will assess the ambition of financial provocations that have ignited and dispersed from grass-roots movements to people’s political parties to establish a terrain of social and political reform, from de-centralized networks to state governments. The rift we find ourselves in stems much further than 'the banks.' Deadline for submissions: October 17, 2016 Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology's special issue on Ethical Risk Assessment in Biomedical Big Data GUEST EDITOR Brent Mittelstadt, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford INTRODUCTION In biomedical research, the analysis of large datasets (Big Data) has become a major driver of innovation and success. 'Biomedical Big Data' (BBD) describes the complex and new set of technologically-driven phenomena focusing on analysis of aggregated datasets to improve medical knowledge, public health, clinical care and commercial health and well-being devices and services. Machine learning and algorithmic categorisation can increasingly make sense of the seemingly endless data emerging from sensors, wearable devices, clinical observations, clinical trials, social and online platforms which provide insight into the behaviours and physiology of individuals. BBD is expected to provide new ways of understanding health and well-being at the level of the individual and society, for example by predicting behaviours, monitoring diseases and outbreaks, and providing risk stratification for individual patients. Epidemiology, infectious disease research, and genomics and genetics are already deeply affected. However, the collection, storage and analysis of BBD potentially raises serious ethical problems which may threaten the huge opportunities it offers. To avoid foreseeable problems and react quickly to emergent issues, the planning and deployment of BBD must include proactive ethical risk assessment. To contribute to this critical step, this special issue of Philosophy and Technology aims to map new, under-researched but important issues, concepts and cases that should be considered in proactive ethical assessment of emerging BBD platforms and services. Question on Research Response Rates

Hi all- My students and I are doing online survey research and are using three online groups (1 Facebook group, 1 LinkedIn group, and 1 listserv) as our survey population. Between them, these groups have thousands of members, but of course, many members aren't active. Thus, I believe that conventional response rate guidelines do not apply. Can anyone point me to some good resources on the issue of internet research today and response rates? (In the past, I have used snowball sampling, but that is not the case here.) Thank you. HCI approaches to teaching digital media production

Hi everyone, Every semester and summer I teach an undergraduate Digital Media Production course where I cover basic design principles (color theory, typography, layout, etc.), basic HTML/CSS, Photoshop, and Premiere. So far I have been relying on graphic design material for the conceptual portions of my course, but I would like incorporate more about interactivity, mobile, and social media, particularly from a HCI perspective. Social Informatics Best Student Paper Award Call for nomination for the 2016 Social Informatics Best Student Paper Award The Special Interest Group for Social Informatics (SIG-SI) and the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics are seeking nominations for an award for the best paper written by a doctoral student on a topic informed by social informatics. Nominations may include a published paper in a peer reviewed journal during 2015 or a conference paper presented in 2015. The author or authors will present their paper at the 12th Annual SIG-SI Symposium on Saturday, October 15, 2016 and receive a $500 cash award at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in Copenhagen, Denmark in October, 2016. La Cura: a Summer School, an international exhibit

We will create an "augmented sense", a wearable technology that will enable people to experience on their bodies, through a new tactility, large scale, real-time online phenomena. We will explore the opportunities and the critical issues connected to this possibility. We will create the technology, an installation and an urban, large-scale architectural visualisation and we will exhibit at Milan's design Triennale. ## Please excuse crossposting ## CfP: Communicating family memory: remembering in a changing media environment Special issue of "Communications: The European Journal of Communication Research"; guest-edited by Christine Lohmeier, University of Bremen Memory and media are closely interlinked areas of research: In fact, memory has always materialized through cultural artefacts, various objects and the mediation of images, words and signs. Furthermore, memory as a social construct has a strong collective dimension. Even individuals' memories can be viewed and made sense of within the context of different collectivities and social formations such as the family, an ethnic community or a nation. Media are essential for these groups to communicate with each other and thereby constitute and negotiate identities, or make sense of the world - past, present and future included. The proposed special issue of "Communications" aims to solicit articles which consider remembering and forgetting within the contexts of families. Next to the nation and ethnic communities, families are classic memory communities. Families shape the individuals' understanding ofpersonal and collective identities and belonging, as well as notions of exclusion. Moreover, families can provide an immediate personal access to the past (through older family members and previous generations) as well as the future (children and imagined future generations). In times of 'deep mediatization', communication within families has undergone some tremendous changes: a higher number of communication devices are in use with an increasing number of functions and media and communication devices present in most areas of everyday life. At the same time the pace of innovation is increasing - both in terms of devices and gadgets available and in terms of services and platforms on offer. Through everyday practices like texting and emailing, more and more digital traces are produced creating a sense that these activities are stored somewhere and therefore not forgotten. Meanwhile, it is also apparent that the data produced through these activities are not in one's own hands and the people who generate them do not have complete control over them. Simultaneously, heightened mobility (be it for work or leisure purposes), migratory experiences and flight, as well as divorces and ruptures within families provide challenges as well as perhaps new opportunities for creating family memory. Submissions can address but are not limited to the following topics: - media and memory practices in families - negotiating memory through communication practices and media use - the family as a memory community in the context of or in relation to other memory communities - communicative practices and remembering in different types of families (single-parent, LGBT parents, mixed-race families, multi-generational families, foster families) - representation of family memory in media texts, exhibitions, museums - families as (dys-)functional memory communities - critical approaches that question/furtherdevelop the concept of family and family memory - theorizing mediated family memory - communication and family memory in times of crises, migration and flight - media, memory, mnemonic practices of transnational families - the significance of objects and mediated memories for families - forgetting in families in times of deep mediatization - power relations/struggles concerning memory and communication matters within families - methodological questions and reflections concerningresearching family communication and family memory - situating communicative practices and family memory in the context of mass communication Formal requirements and time line For this special issue "Communications. The European Journal of Communication Research" accepts full articles (manuscripts of up to 8,000 words with present original work) and research in brief (manuscripts of up to 4,000 words).
