Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies hosts five international research fellows in the field of critical digital & social media studies
by Christian Fuchs 02 Aug '16

02 Aug '16

The Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies hosts five international research fellows https://www.westminster.ac.uk/news/2016/the-westminster-institute-for-advan… Five scholars have been awarded fellowships at the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) during the academic year 2016/17: Dr Arwid Lund (Sweden), Dr Bingqing Xia (China), Dr Claudio Celis Bueno (Chile), Dr Ergin Bulut (Turkey), Dr Lynete Lusike Mukhongo (Kenya). All five are experts in the research field of critical digital and social media studies. The Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies is an academic space for independent critical thinking beyond borders at the University of Westminster in London - http://www.westminster.ac.uk/wias Its primary research focus is on critical digital and social media studies. Professor Christian Fuchs, Director of the IAS, comments: “Digital and social media have become ubiquitous in everyday life and society. Critical studies of data and digital media’s role in society’s power structures are much needed today. The IAS is excited to be able to host five distinguished international experts in critical digital media studies during the academic year 2016/17. The research fellows’ projects focus on various economic and political aspects of digital media in global society. They show the importance of critical thinking and critical research about the Internet in the information age”. Dr Claudio Celis Bueno is a postdoc researcher at Diego Portales University in Chile. His fellowship project will start on 5 September 2016, and will focus on the analysis of the role of digital media in the movies of the filmmaker and video artist Harun Farocki. He comments: “My research focuses on the relationships between images and power in contemporary society. The work of Harun Farocki offers a powerful tool in order to analyse the current role of images in contemporary society. Farocki explores the role of the visual in labour processes and how new algorithmic machines replace both manual labour and information labour. I will examine the role of operative images in Farocki’s documentary films and video installations. An operational image is a type of image that is part of a technical operation. Examples include images intended for surveillance, medical, industrial, logistic, or military purposes”. Dr Bingqing Xia, who is an assistant professor at Macau University of Science and Technology, will commence her IAS fellowship on 12 December 2016. Her research topic is the study of the Chinese Internet economy in context of crisis tendencies. Dr Xia describes her fellowship project: “In 2015, the number of Chinese Internet users had reached 670 million. Since 2015, when the Chinese economy slowed down, much attention has been given to the Internet industries. The Chinese Internet industry at the moment especially has a focus on O2O (online to offline) services and big data. Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (BAT) are the three largest Internet companies in China. BAT planned to invest a lot in new O2O services. My research asks if the Chinese Internet economy is a big bubble or not and what role low-level technical labour plays in it”. Dr Arwid Lund, from Uppsala University in Sweden, is studying discourses on open knowledge during his IAS fellowship. He completed the first part of his stay in July 2016 and will commence the second part on 3 April 2017. He comments: “The movement for Open Knowledge is a broad movement spanning new publishing models in science, commons-based ways of producing software, knowledge and design, e-governance and big data analytics. My project conducts a detailed analysis of what the open knowledge movement’s ideological landscape looks like. It asks: How does the movement understand its political position and mission? How do open knowledge activists assess commercial social media and big data services and the commercial digital economy in general?” Dr Lynete Lusike Mukhongo is a senior lecturer at Moi University in Kenya. Her fellowship research, that will start on 17 May 2016, will study how Kenya’s announcement that it wants to leave the International Criminal Court has been discussed on social media. Dr Mukhongo says about her IAS fellowship project: “The International Criminal Court (ICC) was established by the Rome Statute which came into force in 2002. Its jurisdiction is to prosecute international crimes against humanity. Kenya signed the Rome statute in 1999 and ratified it in 2005. There have been calls by the African Union for withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. The study aims to undertake an analysis of how users in Kenya communicate about this political issue. The study wants to identify diverging views among Kenyans on Twitter on themes related to justice, accountability, imperialism, emancipation, Africanness, postcolonial identity, and African states’ threats to withdraw from the ICC”. Dr Ergin Bulut is an assistant professor at Koc University in Turkey. He will start his IAS fellowship on 1 June 2017. It will focus on the analysis of labour conditions in the video game industry. Dr Bulut comments on the importance of studying the digital game industry: “There is much hype regarding the potentials of creative economy and creative production. Young people tend to regard video game development as a dream job. Our society also preaches that young people should do what they love and be ready to work for free if they really want to have a job in the video game industry or other creative industries. An inquiry of the game industry enables us to understand both the pleasures and pains of game development and interrogate the politics of this ‘dream job’ discourse”. -- Prof. Christian Fuchs University of Westminster, Director of the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies http://www.westminster.ac.uk/wias @fuchschristian

CfP SI Design Issues: Provocation, conflict and appropriation
by Karin Hansson 01 Aug '16

01 Aug '16

Second Call for Papers to a Special Issue of Design Issues: Organizing provocation, conflict and appropriation: The role of the designer in making publics Because of the importance of the role and embodiment of the designer/artist in making publics, this special issue draws attention to reflexive practices in Art & Design, and questions how these practices can be embedded in the formations and operations of publics and design practices. More specifically, the special issue aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? This issue will contain the best papers received and presented in the corresponding workshop in the Participatory Design Conference in Aarhus in August 2016 (PDC2016) entitled “Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation”, as well as other invited contributions. We invite researchers, designers, activists, artists, who in their work are exploring utopian, speculative, and critical design projects as well as designing for and with social movements, alternative societies and relational economies, to contribute to the theme of ‘Organizing provocation, conflict and appropriation: The role of the designer in making publics’. Authors are invited to consider (but are not limited to) the following issues and questions for this special issue: Design as world making and as a way to create a public space Agonistic public spaces versus consensual decision-making; The role of the author/designer/creator/artist in speculative and critical design in relation to participatory design; Politics of Participation Exclusion and inclusion in the design practice; Norms in speculative participatory design practices The tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design The tension between empowerment and exploitation, between participation and precarious labor GUEST EDITORS Shaowen Bardzell, Indiana University Tessy Cerratto Pargman, Stockholm University Carl DiSalvo, Georgia Institute of Technology Laura Forlano, Illinois Institute of Technology Karin Hansson, Stockholm University (Managing Guest Editor, khansson(a)dsv.su.se <mailto:khansson@dsv.su.se>) Jaz Hee-jeong Choi, Queensland University of Technology Somya Joshi, Stockholm University Silvia Lindtner, School of Information, University of Michigan TIMELINE 01.9.2016: Submission deadline for intentions to contribute (1500-2000 words) 01.10.2016: Notification of relevance sent to authors / selected contributions invited to continue 01.12.2016: Full papers submission deadline for those selected to continue (5000 + references) 01.02.2017: Notification of accept / reject / revisions to authors 01.06.2017: Final manuscript submission deadline 15.09.2017: Final selected manuscripts to production BACKGROUND http://performingthecommon.se/ting/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/DesignIssues.… <http://performingthecommon.se/ting/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/DesignIssues.…> For more information, and submissions e-mail: ting(a)performingthecommon.se <mailto:ting@performingthecommon.se> ************************* Karin Hansson Stockholm University

CFP> Combined SIG-SI and SIG-USE Full-Day Workshop (ASIS&T '16) 10/15/16
by Rosenbaum, Howard S. 01 Aug '16

01 Aug '16

Call for Papers and Participation Enhancing Lives through Information and Technology - A Combined SIG-SI and SIG-USE Full-Day Workshop The Social Informatics of Work and Play (SIG-SI): Morning
Information Behavior in Workplaces (SIG-USE): Afternoon ASIS&T Annual Meeting, Copenhagen, Denmark October 15, 2016 Organizers Katriina Byström, Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, Katriina.Bystrom(a)hioa.no<mailto:Katriina.Bystrom@hioa.no> Pnina Fichman, Indiana University, Bloomington, fichman(a)indiana.edu<mailto:fichman@indiana.edu> Luanne Freund, University of British Columbia, Luanne.Freund(a)ubc.ca<mailto:Luanne.Freund@ubc.ca> Howard Rosenbaum, Indiana University, Bloomington, hrosenba(a)indiana.edu<mailto:hrosenba@indiana.edu> Join us at ASIS&T in Copenhagen for a full-day pre-conference workshop to explore the ways in which our uses of information and technologies improve our work and social lives. Two vital and dynamic SIGs are joining forces for a workshop that will provide two interesting and complementary perspectives in the conference theme. In the morning session, SIG-SI will bring a perspective that focuses on the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) in work and play across all areas of ASIS&T. In the afternoon session, SIG-USE will focus on information related activities from different research perspectives and explores the significance of information seeking and use on our lives. Submissions may include empirical, critical, conceptual and theoretical papers and posters, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. The combined workshop will allow networking between members of both SIGs during the day. MORNING: THE SOCIAL INFORMATICS OF WORK AND PLAY (SIG SI) Co-sponsored by the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics This year’s conference theme is “creating knowledge, enhancing lives through information & technology.” This is a particularly apposite theme for SIG-SI, because the social impacts of ICT and the complex relations among people, technologies, and the contexts of ICT design, implementation, and use have long been core concerns of social informatics. The SIG-SI morning session, our 12th annual gathering at ASIS&T annual meetings, will bring a critical perspective that focuses on the social aspects of ICT that cuts across all areas of ASIS&T This year, we are particularly interested in papers that investigate the social informatics of work and play. We define “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. We also define “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (e.g., paper, books, etc.), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include papers and posters that explore the ways in which people’s uses of ICT affect their practices and behaviors while at work, play, and engaged in their social lives. We are particularly interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme, but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. Some of the questions we ask include: • What are the impacts of ICT on people’s practices and behaviors while at work, play, and engaged in their social lives? • What are some of the ways our work and play practices shape the design and development of ICT? • What are the ways ICT positively and negatively impact organizations, work, play, and social life? • What kinds of theoretical and methodological frameworks are best suited for studying the mutual shaping of ICT and practices and behaviors while at work and play? The schedule for the morning session of the symposium will involve the presentations of papers, a panel of distinguished scholars, and the best social informatics paper awards for 2015. We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. SIG-SI symposium chairs Pnina Fichman, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA Howard Rosenbaum, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA Eric Meyer, Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford, UK Adam Worrall, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada AFTERNOON: INFORMATION BEHAVIOUR IN WORKPLACES (SIG-USE) This year’s SIG USE symposium focuses on information issues at work. It acknowledges social, individual and technological perspectives on the roles and flows that information takes as part of physical and digital work. The broad approach relates to the conference theme with a focus on information behavior (IB) or on information practices (IP) in connection to workplaces. Earlier generations were accustomed to stable and localized work; now work activities and contexts have and are radically changing. During their work life, people may experience several career changes, are expected to learn new skills and adapt to new ideas as well as manage the increasingly fluid boundaries between work and leisure. Moreover, much of information and data are internetworked and accessible simultaneously by multiple mobile devices supporting networked communities anyplace, anywhere, anytime. This challenges both the creation and consumption of information used for work – or at work; it also affects how, when and where people work, as well as their productivity, collegiality and innovativeness. Despite, or perhaps due to, the advances in technology, today’s workplaces remain challenged by how to create, discover, share, value and enhance information and knowledge at and for work; and, how to design and manage the systems that support these functions, which are so critical to organizationally effective and individually rewarding work. The issues are many, from the consequences of new devices that are stretching the ways that an organization works, to the efficacy dynamics (stress, motivation, collaboration, productivity, age, etc.) and to the new skills and expertise required to work in such changing and changeable environments. Information is indispensable in many, if not all, workplace activities; as a resource for getting work done as well as for learning, managing change, developing and maintaining processes and creating professional networks. Specific issues to be addressed depend on the interest of the participants and the issues they bring into the workshop. Welcome topics include: • Critical cultural information behavior – how do we infuse our workplaces and practices with diversity and social justice sensibilities? • Collaborative IB; virtual team • Digital workplaces, peopleless offices & officeless people - what happens when the physical workplace dissolves? • Everyday Life Information (in the workplace) • Frameworks for understanding IB/IP in work settings • IB/IP and workplace or information systems design • Organizational behaviour research - what can we learn from this field of research that is relevant to IB/IP? • Organizational information genres • Personal Information Management (in the workplace) • The blurring of lines between personal and professional in digital information use in the workplace • The impact of mobile devices on IB/IP in the workplace • Workplace culture, diversity and inclusion - how these shape and are shaped by information behaviour (IB)/information practices (IP)? • and any other work-related informational topics We aim to an interactive workshop to enable the fullest exchange of ideas amongst attendees. For this reason, we encourage participants to submit; even if participation without a paper/poster is an eligible option. The workshop features a keynote by Professor Hazel Hall (preliminarily confirmed), presentation of selected papers, a joint poster session between the SIGs, and roundtable discussions based on short papers and posters by participants. Documentation: short papers and posters are shared digitally among the participants. Roundtable discussions are documented by a designated person in each group and collated by symposium chairs to a short summary that is made available for the participants afterwards. Dear All, I would like to bring to everybody's attention that in Tallinn University in Estonia a new research centre was recently started - titled TLU Centre of Excellence in Media Innovation and Digital Culture (MEDIT) - http://www.tlu.ee/en/TU-Centre-of-Excellence-in-Media-Innovation-and-Digita… MEDITs research teams tend to focus on the following areas: - trans- and crossmediality - digitisation of audiovisual cultural heritage and its innovative reuse - audiovisual media regulation and policy changes in Europe - management of convergent media - media innovation systems (incl. ‘cross-innovations’ - cooperations with other sectors) - augmented and virtual reality; location based storytelling (we are about to have a dedicated lab) - digital humanities approach to audiovisual media - media semiotics (with a focus on media change) - innovative uses of media in education Related to these and closely associated topics we invite scholars to work with us in Tallinn - especially as there are many good opportunities that enable this: - Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships. https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/… Deadline is September 15th, we invite expressions of interest by July 4th. - Mobilitas Plus programme - grants offered by Estonian Research Council. There are two programmes - for post-doctoral researchers ( http://www.etag.ee/en/funding/mobility-funding/23575-2/mobilitas-pluss-post… <http://www.etag.ee/en/funding/mobility-funding/23575-2/>) and top-researchers ( http://www.etag.ee/en/funding/mobility-funding/23575-2/top-researcher-grant/) Deadline is August 31st, we invite expressions of interest by July 4th. - Our centre is also offering 1-3 months fellowships to work with us in Tallinn - as part of our three research groups (digital humanities group, audiovisual media group and digital media management group) or to work in our Creatiive Lab that mostly focuses on experiments with augmented and virtual reality in service of the memory sector. Interested scholars and artists can contact us regarding these fellowships on a running basis.
