CSCL 2017: Preliminary Call for Papers The 12th International Conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning June 18-21, 2017 Drexel University & The University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA Conference theme: Making a Difference — Prioritizing Equity and Access in CSCL Computer Supported Collaborative Learning is a premier conference of the International Society of the Learning Sciences that focuses on the study of social learning processes with and without technology as well as the development and evaluation of tools to enhance or improve collective thinking and learning. The conference is a major international event bringing together researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds and research interests including educational technology, design, HCI, information sciences, educational psychology, museum research, library science, curriculum and instruction, psychology, computer science, cognitive science, and many more. We welcome high quality conceptual, empirical, and theoretical contributions. This year's conference theme focuses on the need to consider issues such as equity, access, and inclusion in the design, implementation, and deployment of computer-supported learning environments. CSCL 2017 will prioritize keynote speakers, workshops and papers that champion research and tools focused on equity and access relative to CSCL. Hosted by a diverse leadership team in the Learning Sciences, the conference will highlight work that discusses ways to broaden the CSCL pipeline, promotes and/or celebrates out of the box thinking, or that brings a wide range of viewpoints or voices to CSCL topics or tools. Submissions We are currently seeking submissions for the following: • Full Papers (8 pages): Full papers are for mature work, requiring lengthy explanations of the conceptual background, methodology and data and analysis. Full paper submissions should state: (a) the major issue(s) addressed, (b) potential significance of the work, (c) the theoretical and methodological approach(es) pursued, (d) major findings, conclusions, implications, and (e) relevant scholarly references. • Short Papers (4 pages): Short papers are for work that makes significant contributions, but that is still in progress, of smaller scale, or that can be reported briefly. Otherwise, the same criteria apply as listed for full papers above. • Posters (2 pages): Posters are for work in early stages and for novel and promising ideas. The two page abstract should identify the aspect of the work that will likely lead to productive discussions with conference participants in a poster session, including figures exemplifying the visual support to be provided for these discussions in the poster. • Symposia (8 pages): Symposia are for conveying larger ideas or results about a specific issue. Discussion among members of the symposium and with the audience should be moderated to focus on certain positions or controversies. We expect symposia to address large issues of interest to CSCL, particularly those related to this year's conference theme. hi all, Forgive the cross-postings - I am recruiting for a post-doctoral fellow to work with me at Concordia University over the next two years in *Game Studies and Design.* Here's the position description and a link to more information. Also feel free to email me for more details: The Postdoctoral Fellow in Game Studies and Design will play a central role in launching two newly funded research projects that investigate game culture and game creation, and take as a central objective investigating new forms of play and new types of game mechanics. Streaming @ the Margins of Play studies live streaming of videogame play via Twitch.tv. It will investigate how the play practices of women, people of colour, older and LGBTQ individuals are reconfiguring our understanding of gameplay. This project investigates how such play is being (re)built as a site for entertainment, for leisure, and for community building. The research-creation project Playing with Ambiguity: A Game Exploring Moral Dilemmas and Player Agency investigates how better game design conventions can be developed to persuade individuals to explore morally ambiguous situations through play, to understand complex societal issues as well as individual actions that seem morally suspect. The PDF will work with Dr. Consalvo at the mLab and the Technoculture, Art and Games (TAG) Centre, which has 15 faculty members and 30 graduate students from departments across arts and science, fine arts and engineering. The Centre has the single largest concentration of work of this kind in Canada. TAG’s faculty and students have a commitment to developing collaborative projects and mentoring in an open concept studio/lab based environment. Academic qualifications required PhD in Communication Studies, English, Media Studies or a related field, with experience in qualitative methods. In addition to helping with the management of these projects, the PDF should have an independent research program that focuses either on research about live streaming of gameplay or a focus related to players, morality and ethics, and digital gameplay. Attendees will be invited to participate in three hands-on, interactive sessions organized around core research challenges in net history: (1) theory and epistemology, (2) materials, sources, and methodology, and (3) mediation and transmission. Submission process : Anyone can submit as a presenter (with abstract) or an attendee (no abstract necessary). Both will be involved actively, through sharing problems, tips and solutions. Rather than whole case studies or paper presentations, each session will address specific challenges facing one or more participants: theoretical paradoxes, methodological dead-ends, and demonstrations of born-digital artifacts. Through a series of activities, participants will be asked to take positions, brainstorm solutions, and identify common themes. Hi everyone! So, I'm looking at the calendar, and I want to share with you quick updates on our planning for AoIR 2016 and some important information. The Conference This year's conference theme is Internet Rules! Our diligent German local organizing committee of Dr. Christian Katzenbach, Larissa Wunderlich, and the folks at the Humboldt University Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) has been planning a first rate conference for us. The conference gets underway at Humboldt University with several workshops on Wednesday, 5 October, and our keynote address with Jose van Dijck launches the main conference in the evening of the 5th. The main conference is 6-8 October, with a soon-to-be announced plenary panel on 6 October. Be sure to check the AoIR website: http://aoir.org for information and updates in the News and Conference sections and details about the location and venue for the conference. The conference ends the evening of the 8th with a reception at a unique Berlin-esque venue with food, drinks, and a DJ. More announcements on that soon. As we've done in the last few years, this conference reception is part of the conference--no additional fees to attend--thanks to our sponsors (http://aoir.org/aoir2016/sponsors/) Dr. Cornelius Puschmann, the AoIR 2016 program chair, will be announcing the final schedule for the conference in early August. Registration But, here's the catch: *if you plan to come to AoIR and present your work, you need to register*. Speaking of registration, please help us replenish the travel scholarship fund. AoIR has worked hard to provide up to 6 travel awards, 5 $500 awards and one $1500 award, to people who are doing scholarship that is underrepresented at the conference or who could not attend the conference due to financial circumstances or are from non-OECD countries (see the call for applications if you're curious). This money generally goes to doctoral students or early career faculty who may not have the support to come to the conference otherwise. Unfortunately, the fund is depleting. We will not be able to keep providing such generous support without help from our members. When you register, if you can spare $10, there is a check box to give a personal contribution to the travel fund. Help us make the AoIR conference a global meeting of scholars. Hotels AoIR overlaps with a holiday in Germany, and Berlin is a popular vacation destination. If you haven't yet, get your hotel room booked. Core contributions typically take the form of insightful findings, evolved theories, models, concepts, or methods, such as games improving well-being of older adults, TV gesture to improve TV watching experience etc. - Specific application areas: This topic will include papers that extend the design and understanding of applications for older adult user group. Example of application areas can be health, home, accessibility, gerontology, sustainability, ICT4D, data visualization, social computing and computer-supported collaborative work, and visual analytics. - Human factors: This topic will focus on papers on practice of designing products, systems, or processes to take proper account of the interaction between interactive systems and the old people who use them. - Input and Interactions: This topic focuses on new interaction techniques, technologies, and devices for input and output. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: sensing, actuation, unconventional UIs, touch and multi-touch, 3D interaction, augmented/mixed/virtual reality, mobile interaction, novel displays, and devices of different sizes and configurations. - Usability and user experience: This topic is suitable for works that extend the knowledge, practices, methods, components, and tools that make technology more useful, usable, and desirable. It expects significant works on the basis of their demonstrable potential for effective reuse and applicability across a range of application domains or across a range of design, research, and older user communities. Although we are interested in papers on the effects of various theories, technologies, software, or algorithms on ageing population interaction experience, technical contributions without clear indications of the impact on aged people are not within the scope of IxAP. SUBMISSION TYPES We encourage the following research submission types: PAPERS Full Papers are intended to report stable and completed research. Papers will be 4-10 pages and will undergo a peer review process. Submitted full papers should follow the ACM CHI paper. Accepted papers, after presented to the symposium, will be published in ACM Digital Library. The authors of selected oral presentations will be invited to a special issue of the International SCI- or EI- indexed Journal after further revision. Please note that there is no requirement to anonymize paper submissions and at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the symposium. We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and ageing people to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted, it will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Each paper will be reviewed by three program committee members. If review scores fall below a threshold, the paper will be rejected. Authors of accepted paper will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. POSTERS This is a juried submission track that allows attendees to showcase early, relatively speculative or not yet completed work so that others can know what they are doing. Authors are required to submit a 1-page poster paper including author information and a description of the study. Note that: 1. The poster size should be A0 (84.1 x 118.4cm, 33.11 x 46.61 inches). 2. A small desk can be provided on request. 3. There is no AC power supply for poster presenters. Please also note that there is no requirement to anonymize poster submissions and at least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the symposium.
