Later today, Jun 22 2016, the inaugural meeting of the Open Music Initiative <http://www.open-music.org/> takes place in NYC. The OMI is a collaboration between the Berklee school and the MIT Media Lab and others to "to promote and advance the development of open source standards and innovation related to music," However, when I got in touch and offered to livestream the meeting, I was told "the meeting is closed to the public so live streaming won't be permitted". It seems old habits die hard. By total contrast, the Engelberg/TPI conference last Friday, archived below, was an exemplar of the kind of open multistakeholder forum that we've come to expect in modern policy and standards development. The entanglement of digital media technologies with material culture, the workplace, and the domestic sphere means our everyday lives are coming into contact with automation as well. But what do we mean when we say ‘automation’ - does it encompass algorithms, sensor networks, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacture, and interoperability? What histories and pre-histories of automation and everyday life might we need to take account of? How are past robotic imaginaries shaping the present—in science and technology and in science fiction alike? Does the current preoccupation with automation signal the endurance of these earlier imaginaries, does it mark a moment of disruption, or does it simply coincide with an industrial pivot on behalf of Silicon Valley toward these areas of innovation, and an accompanying wave of hype? When does the appearance of automation work to elide or obscure various forms of manual, affective and immaterial labour? In this two-day symposium, we invite theoretical and empirical papers that engage with these and other questions, particularly as they intersect with the experience and politics of digital media technologies with everyday life, work and consumption. Cybersecurity in a Digital Age Workshop

Richard Legal and Policy Dimensions of Cybersecurity A by-invitation experts' workshop to be held at George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs September 28-29, 2016 The security of information networks and databases is now a critical element of national security and economic competitiveness. Rapid growth in e-commerce, banking, and communication systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased efficiency and driven economic growth, but by necessity these systems preclude consumers' control over how and where their data are collected, archived and processed. Recent high-profile breaches of security at banks and retailers, coupled with secret and not-so-secret efforts by foreign governments and rogue actors to attack critical information infrastructures, have heightened these concerns. Legal and policy responses to the cybersecurity challenge are just as important as technological ones. To focus much-needed attention on this field of study, the IIP invites authors to submit abstracts addressing the policy and legal aspects of information security, privacy, data protection, cybersecurity-related legislation, and critical cyber-infrastructure protection. Authors of the selected papers will be invited to present and discuss them during a 2 day by-invitation-only experts workshop held at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs on September 28-29 (Wed.-Thu.), 2016. Each paper will be assigned a respondent recruited from the local academic/policy/advocacy communities and will be allotted a full hour for presentation, response and discussion. A reception and formal dinner provide room for social interaction. This workshop is twelfth in a series of workshops organized by the IIP since 2011, in support of its Journal of Information Policy, published by the IIP in partnership with the Penn State University Press (http://www.psupress.org/Journals/jnls_JIP.html) Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for peer review to the Journal, with the successful papers presented in special issues dedicated to each workshop. Dear AoIR, Gohar F Khan just send a short analytical piece on the Australian Elections by comparing the Twitter profiles of two candidates with regard to - interactivity (measured by re-tweets, relies, user mentions) - influence and (measured by tweets favorited, re-tweets, user mentions) - popularity (measured by followers, following ratio, listed). **Is there an academic reference that someone can recommend regarding how to define/categorize and measure Twitter activities within an ego-centric network analysis??** >From a methodological point of view I find Khan's suggestion both interesting and difficult as he uses the same item to measure different characteristics. More specifically, the workshop aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? We invite researchers, designers, activists, artists, who in their work are exploring utopian, speculative, and critical design projects as well as designing for and with social movements, alternative societies and relational economies. irb approach to data like panama papers / wikileaks / etc?

Hi, for a study I'm doing I was wondering if people on this list might could contact me offline at (kalev.leetaru5(a)gmail.com) with any pointers or personal experiences of how their IRBs are addressing the issue of academic research using data from data breaches. Ie, the Panama Papers, Wikileaks, the Sony emails, Ashley Madison data, and any of the myriad other datasets now floating around. Researchers from several major US institutions I've spoken with thus far have shared IRB approval forms with me that show their particular IRBs accepting the argument that any data, no matter how sensitive, which can be downloaded openly from the web, is accepted as "public domain" and falls under an IRB exemption of existing public data. In particular, the IRB approvals I've seen accepted that any personally identifying information in the datasets, no matter how sensitive, is exempted due to its being public access now. I'm thus extremely curious whether this is a general trend and how other IRBs are treating the use of hacked datasets which are widely accessible online. In an era in which academic researchers can easily access with a few mouseclicks breached medical records to password archives to sexual preferences to financial statements to just about any kind of dataset you can imagine, there are all kinds of questions around whether those datasets should be available for academic research and I'm curious how IRBs are leaning right now. I realize there are a myriad professional ethics guidelines out there put forward by the various professional societies, but from browsing recent journal issues from a cross-section of fields including the social, information, and computer sciences, I've turned up countless papers using breached datasets, and those papers in fields that traditionally use IRBs have all claimed full IRB approval, while I've found in the computer sciences that few of the researchers I've spoken with thus far have either heard of the IRB or believe that their research is subject to IRB. Thus, my main interest is really at the institutional level - how are IRBs and universities handling the issue of their scholars using data from breaches like Wikileaks, Panama Papers, Sony emails, breaches from government agencies, etc? I'm also interested for those of you who are journal editors or who have gone through that process, how do you handle the issue of whether to publish a paper using something like Wikileaks data and, *in particular* how do you handle the issue of hosting portions of the breached data in the replication archive of your journal's website? I know this can be a deeply impassioned area of discourse and for my particular study I'm *solely* focused on how institutions, especially IRBs and also journals, are currently handling the issue of breached data like Wikileaks/Panama Papers/etc in academic publications.
