A workshop held during CHI 2014 signaled coalescence in the requirements for the establishment of said curriculum. This workshop seeks to further explore among multiple diverse HCI educators on how to proceed with the establishment of an HCI living curriculum that integrates different cultural contexts and requirements. The envisaged outcome is a plan to proceed with the creation of such a culturally sensible living curriculum/a and its implementation. For more information and CFP visit http://bit.ly/29MTNlW <http://africhi.us13.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=661d992f33fc276dd7cb159c…> *Social Media Usage in Africa and its Ethical Implications (Deadline: 15 August)* African users are continuously signing onto Social Media and it has become a game changer within the communication system. Most importantly the research on Social Media has become a topic of tremendous interest within the Human Computer interaction (HCI) field. Despite the benefits of Social Media, there have been concerns among users, communities, academics, researchers and governments on the ethical implications of Social Media use. We plan to have a workshop on understanding the ethical implications and perspectives of Social Media use from various stakeholders. Researchers in the Social Media space can share their work and methods in order to gain a broader under-standing of Social Media issues arising on the continent and specifically ethical implications. Finally the workshop aims to encourage collaboration and cross-cultural research among researcher in the space. It introduces postcolonial and anti-colonial approaches to the cultural legacies of colonialism and imperialism, that frame contemporary technology design, with a special emphasis on African theory and practice. Equally, it is a forum for sharing experiences about uneven socio-economic, political or onto-epistemic relations in technology design and actions that respond to, or resist, these. For more information about this workshop visit http://decolonisingtechnology.kagonya.net <http://africhi.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=661d992f33fc276dd7cb159c8…> *Harnessing the Power of Digital Mobile Maps in Africa (Deadline: 28 July)* Africa has experienced an explosive growth of smartphones– particularly sub-Saharan Africa where growth rates are more than twice the global average. Such mobile devices provide new ways for technologies to help people discover and interact with their physical worlds. In particular, harnessing the power of digital mobile maps in Africa has the opportunity to transform lives by providing greater access to information, goods, and services that exist in people’s physical worlds. Despite this potential, there are a number of challenges and opportunities to doing so that are unique to Africa’s culture, infrastructure, and physical landscape. The goal of this workshop is to engage in creative ideation around this topic in order to create a series of innovative designs and to build out a research agenda that would push forward the design and development of such technologies. Visit the website <http://africhi.us13.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=661d992f33fc276dd7cb159c…> for more information. *Gumzo: new dialogues in HCI (Deadline: 23 July)* Gumzo at AfriCHI’16 is a one-day workshop which aims to advance HCI by engaging design practice and scholarship with diverse voices and local or broader creativity, challenging dominant perspectives and raising critical issues about technology, society and participation in technology production. In Gumzo sessions, HCI practitioners, cholars, ethnographers, designers, storytellers, artists, performers and film-makers (and/or designers or researchers who collaborate with them) present original works, ideas and insights that relate technology and Africa, and reflect on the role of audio-visual media and performance in conveying knowledge about technology and design. We also plan to foreground the difficulties for designers and users who need to deal with the unequal global hierarchies of language and culture which inform the development of technologies. To submit a paper to this workshop, download our CFP here <http://africhi.us13.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=661d992f33fc276dd7cb159c…> . *LEDz and Cocktailsz (Deadline: stay tuned!)* This workshop will explore the use of low cost materials to stimulate ideas for introducing technology education in low resource communities in the African Region using HCI methods. We will begin with a tutorial for crafting together paper circuits using LEDs, copper tape, and a coin cell battery. Participants will follow along with the workshop leaders and be encouraged to use what they have learned to design their own custom paper card circuits for children in a local Kenyan hospital. Following the design session, the workshop leaders will open the floor up for discussion on alternative methods for teaching technology education in low resource communities in order to broaden participation and perception of the field. by Becky Lentz 21 Jul '16

21 Jul '16

Dear colleagues, I¹m collecting ideas for films (features, documentaries, Ted Talks, etc.) for an undergraduate course I teach on media governance. The course is organized broadly around the notion of the commons (http://www.onthecommons.org/) and features the roles of actors in three intersecting categories: private industry, government, and the third sector. Modules include the information/knowledge commons, the spectrum commons, the telecom commons, the software/hardware commons, and the internet commons. Would love to get suggestions for media to introduce each module. Feel free to email me off list (preferable). Many thanks, B. 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2017): Fourth Call for Papers
by Announce Announcements 21 Jul '16

21 Jul '16

** Fourth Call for Papers *** 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces IUI 2017 St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus March 13-16, 2017 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Overview ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Why you should submit to ACM IUI: At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. Submission Full and Short Papers We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user interfaces, applications, interactive and intelligent technologies, empirical studies, or design techniques. IUI 2017 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new concepts or directions for the design of intelligent interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2017". Examples of ACM IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · Intelligent visualization tools · User-Adaptive interaction and personalization · Recommender systems · Intelligent wearable, mobile and ubiquitous interfaces · Modeling and prediction of user behavior · Information retrieval and search · Education and learning-related technologies · Social media analysis · Multi-modal interfaces (speech, gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological information etc.) · Natural language and speech processing · Generation of multimodal content · Big Data and analytics · Smart environments and tangible computing · Intelligent assistants for complex tasks · Collaborative interfaces · Persuasive and assistive technologies in IUI · Affective and aesthetic interfaces · Interactive machine learning · Planning and plan recognition for IUI · Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation · Proactive and agent-based user interaction · Example-and demonstration-based interfaces · Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces Submission Guidelines · Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. · Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of full papers. · Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: 1. Author's names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. 2. Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. 3. Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. For example, "... as shown in our previous user study [2] ..." is not allowed, whereas "... as shown in Smith et al. [2] " is acceptable (because in this case the citation [2] will NOT be perceived as self-citation). Failure to follow these guidelines may results in submissions being rejected without review. Submissions should follow the standard SigCHI format available here: http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… . You may use either the Microsoft Word template or the LaTeX template. Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation. Accepted short papers will be invited either as oral or poster presentation, depending on the quality of the papers. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. (For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.) Important Dates · Abstracts: October 9, 2016 · Full and Short Papers: October 14, 2016 · Reviews to Authors: November 21, 2016 · Rebuttals: November 25, 2016 · Notification of Decisions: December 9, 2016 Committees General Chairs · Tsvika Kuflik, University of Haifa, Israel · George A. Cyber Hygiene and the Internet of Things: Invitation to participate in a consensus exercise
by John Blythe 20 Jul '16

20 Jul '16

Dear colleagues, If you have expertise in security and Internet of Things, you may be interested in taking part in our latest research project. At the UCL Centre for Behaviour Change, we are currently recruiting experts to contribute to the ‘Cyber Hygiene Project’. The project is part of the multi-disciplinary PETRAS research hub exploring critical issues in privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, acceptability, and security in Internet of Things environments. More information about the project and the hub can be found here (http://www.petrashub.org/) The Internet of Things will bring many benefits for consumers, businesses and government but alongside these benefits will be a heightened risk to threats. Cyber Hygiene refers to the security, privacy and safety behaviours end-users need to engage in to protect themselves in IoT environments. Our goal is to identify intervention strategies and develop guidelines for developers, companies, and end-users on improving Cyber Hygiene. To achieve this goal, we are looking to work with experts to establish consensus on potential IoT threats and mitigating behaviours that end-users should engage in to maintain their Cyber Hygiene. This would provide us with an understanding of the key user behaviours before we identify intervention strategies. Expert consensus studies are particularly useful when there is limited research and clarity around a topic. IoT research is well in its infancy and there is currently a lack of guidance on Cyber Hygiene behaviours. Establishing consensus in this area will be an important first step before establishing behaviour change strategies. Working with us would involve three online questionnaires sent to you between July to October 2016 (approx. 15-20 minutes each time) to obtain your opinions on these issues. In receipt of your time, we will be running a *free bespoke behaviour change and networking event* covering theory and practice related to a topic of interest from recruited IoT and information security experts (ran by our specialists at the UCL centre for behaviour change. If you are interested in participating, we would be grateful if you could complete the brief survey available at the following link ( https://t.co/8neHiQ7hTN) *within two weeks* of receipt of this email, in which you will be asked to confirm your interest in participation and answer some short questions in relation to your field of work and background, and choose your preferences for the behaviour change event. This will help ensure our final sample includes people from a wide range of countries, disciplines and areas of study. *Furthermore, please feel free to share this email with anyone you feel may be interested in taking part. * Best wishes John Blythe on behalf of the Cyber Hygiene team (Jeremy Watson, Carmen Leferve & Susan Michie) *__________________________________________________________________________________________________________* *Dr. John M Blythe* *Research Associate, UCL Centre for Behaviour Change* T: +44 (0)2031087982 <%2B44%20%280%29191%20227%203716> E: *j.blythe(a)ucl.ac.uk <j.blythe(a)ucl.ac.uk>* A: UCL Centre for Behaviour Change 8 Hunter Street, London, WC1N 1BN
