http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ANW720/research-fellow-social-media-and-sleep/ The Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey, UK seek to appoint a Research Fellow full time for 1 year for the project ‘Social Media and Sleep: Ethical agendas in a digital age’, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Sleep provides a particularly interesting case study of recent developments in digital and social media and especially the ethical challenges and opportunities they embody and engender. For example, these technologies have the potential to transform how we ‘know’ good and bad sleep; may come to be embedded within new standards, responsibilities and ideals to become a better or more productive sleeper; and may give rise to a future of work where sleep data becomes wrapped up within company health and wellbeing programmes. The current seed funding aims to: - Develop an international network of researchers - Consider and debate how best to research this area in a way which is reflexive of its own role with regard to these ethical issues - Carry out one-to-one interview with key stakeholders; such as legal experts, sleep experts, clinicians and designers. - Develop a large-scale representative survey to scope general population attitudes and practices As an experienced researcher, you will: - Organise project and network meetings - Organise a methodological symposium - Organise, conduct and analyse qualitative interviews - Draft & design an online questionnaire; and complete basic analysis of findings - Producing written reports of the findings suitable for different audiences (academic, policy, practice) and contributing to the dissemination of findings through stakeholder events. - Take the lead on drafting an application for funding for a larger study - Contribute to the design and organisation of stakeholder and other dissemination events (potentially including a large scale event at the 2017 British Science Association Festival) You will hold a PhD or equivalent in any social science discipline, which should ideally include a strong research methods component. Experience of undertaking interviews and designing and conducting online surveys would also be valuable. An interest in the sociology of sleep and/or science and technology studies would also be advantageous. The post is based in the Department of Sociology, working with the Principal Investigator, Dr Robert Meadows. Why do whole communities choose to go without the internet when the infrastructure for access is in place? Through an in-depth exploration of the digital practices occurring in Aboriginal households in remote central Australia, the authors address both the dynamics of internet adoption and the benefits that flow from its use. The book challenges us to think beyond the standard explanations for the digital divide, arguing that digital exclusion is not just another symptom of social exclusion. At its heart, Internet on the Outstation is a compelling examination of equality and difference in the digital age, asking: Can internet access help resolve the disadvantages associated with remote living? Internet on the Outstation is the result of a multi-year research collaboration, which included a trial of internet infrastructure, training and maintenance in three small Aboriginal communities (known as outstations). During the research phase, Ellie Rennie, Eleanor Hogan and Julian Thomas were based at the Swinburne Institute for Social Research in Melbourne. Anyone studying Ingress or whole game play histories?

Interestingly Eve Online saves all one's 'in game' messages and chat logs to simple text files on the gamer's C drive on their PC. I saved all these files over multiple PC's I have played the game on. I have almost my whole game history in small text files. A toy big data problem as there are at least 500,000 files now. Ingress a GPS cell phone exercise game sends e-mail/gmail notifications when one's landmarks are attacked by the other team. I have 5,000 e-mails after a few months playing. I have successfully compiled and parsed these files, the Eve game logs and the Ingress gmail notifications which can be a form of record of my entire game play. I can look at my first days in Eve and the huge risks I took in game play not knowing these were risks. Risk is a nice topic in gaming because of gambling studies and the policy desire to help compulsive gamblers. Anyone else analyzing whole game playing histories as data? Would you have thoughts on tracing out behaviour in game playing log files? Conceptual papers would address foundational theories of critical studies of media or ethical conduct in periods of rapid sociotechnical change—e.g., new ways of thinking about information exchange in communities and societies. By considering how infrastructures – the underlying material properties, policy decisions, and mechanisms of interoperability that support digital platforms – are designed, maintained, and dismantled, the work presented in this mini-track will contribute to debates about sociotechnical aspects of digital and social media, with a focus on data, knowledge production, and information access. This session will focus on research that employs techniques such as infrastructural inversion, trace ethnography or design research (among other methods) to explore factors that influence the development of infrastructures and their use in practice. Academic researchers and practitioners have deployed traditional techniques, from ethnography to social network analysis; but digital and social media challenge and even defy these techniques in a number of ways that must be examined. At the same time, digital and social media may benefit from more organic and unorthodox methods that get at aspects that cannot be examined otherwise. This intensive half day workshop will focus on approaches and best practices for studying digital and social media. We aim to go beyond the application of existing methods into online environments and collect innovative methods that break new ground while producing rigorous insights. This workshop will draw on invited and other participants’ research, teaching, classroom, and business experiences to think through “mixed methods” for qualitative and quantitative studies of digital and social media systems. Through a series of roundtables and guided discussions, the workshop will focus on best practices for studying digital and social media. As part of these discussions, we also will highlight technical and ethical challenges that arise from our studying cross-platform, digital and social media phenomenon. The output of this workshop will be an open, “co-authored” syllabus for a seminar offering what we might call a mixed-method, “from causal to complicated” approach to digital and social media research, applicable to both researchers and practitioners alike.
