Final CFP: Values, Power, and Politics in Digital Infrastructures
by Jaime Snyder 06 Jun '16

06 Jun '16

This is the final call for submission to the Values, Power, and Politics in Digital Infrastructures mini track within the Studying Social Media and Digital Infrastructures workshop-within-a-conference to be held at the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-50). Details about each of the three components of the workshop are below. Deadline for submitting is June 15th. —— CFP: Studying Social Media and Digital Infrastructures: a workshop-within-a-conference https://socialmediacollective.org/2016/04/19/cfp-studying-social-media-and-… part of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-50) paper submission deadline: June 15, 2016, 11:59pm HST. For fifty years, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) has been a home for researchers in the information, computer, and system sciences (http://www.hicss.org/) The 50th anniversary event will be held January 4-7, 2017, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. With an eye to the exponential growth of digitalization and information networks in all aspects of human activity, HICSS has continued to expand its track on Digital and Social Media (http://www.hicss.org/#!track3/c1xcj) This year, among the Digital and Social Media track’s numerous offerings, we offer two minitracks meant to work in concert. Designed to sequence together into a single day-long workshop-within-a-conference, they will host the best emerging scholarship from sociology, anthropology, communication, information studies, and science & technology studies that addresses the most pressing concerns around digital and social media. In addition, we have developed a pre-conference workshop on digital research methods that will inform and complement the work presented in these minitracks. Minitrack 1: Critical and Ethical Studies of Digital and Social Media http://www.hicss.org/#!critical-ethical-studies-of-dsm/c24u6 Organizers: Tarleton Gillespie, Mary Gray, and Robert Mason The minitrack will critically interrogate the role of DSM in supporting existing power structures or realigning power for underrepresented or social marginalized groups, and raise awareness or illustrate the ethical issues associated with doing research on DSM. Conceptual papers would address foundational theories of critical studies of media or ethical conduct in periods of rapid sociotechnical change—e.g., new ways of thinking about information exchange in communities and societies. Empirical papers would draw on studies of social media data that illustrate the critical or ethical dimensions of the use of such data. We welcome papers considering topics such as (but not limited to): * the power and responsibility of digital platforms * bias and discrimination in the collection and use of social data * political economies and labor conditions of paid and unpaid information work * values embedded in search engines and social media algorithms * changes in societal institutions driven by social media and data-intensive techniques * alternative forms of digital and social media * the ethical dynamics of studying human subjects through their online data * challenges in studying the flow of information and misinformation * barriers to and professional obligations around accessing and studying proprietary DSM data Minitrack 2: Values, Power, and Politics in Digital Infrastructures http://www.hicss.org/#!values-power-and-politics-in-digital-i/c19uj Organizers: Katie Shilton, Jaime Snyder, and Matthew Bietz This minitrack will explore the themes of values, power, and politics in relation to the infrastructures that support digital data, documents, and interactions. By considering how infrastructures – the underlying material properties, policy decisions, and mechanisms of interoperability that support digital platforms – are designed, maintained, and dismantled, the work presented in this mini-track will contribute to debates about sociotechnical aspects of digital and social media, with a focus on data, knowledge production, and information access. This session will focus on research that employs techniques such as infrastructural inversion, trace ethnography or design research (among other methods) to explore factors that influence the development of infrastructures and their use in practice. We welcome papers considering topics such as (but not limited to): * politics and ethics in digital platforms and infrastructures * values of stakeholders in digital infrastructures * materiality of values, power, or politics in digital infrastructures * tensions between commercial infrastructures and the needs of communities of practice * maintenance, repair, deletion, decay of digital and social media infrastructures * resistance, adoption and adaptation of digital infrastructures * alternative perspectives on what comprises infrastructures Pre-conference workshop: Digital Methods “Best Practices” http://shawnw.io/workshops/HICSS-digitalmethods Organizers: Shawn Walker, Mary Gray, and Robert Mason While the study of digital and social media and its impact on society has exploded, discussion of the best methods for doing so remains thin. Academic researchers and practitioners have deployed traditional techniques, from ethnography to social network analysis; but digital and social media challenge and even defy these techniques in a number of ways that must be examined. At the same time, digital and social media may benefit from more organic and unorthodox methods that get at aspects that cannot be examined otherwise. This intensive half day workshop will focus on approaches and best practices for studying digital and social media. We aim to go beyond the application of existing methods into online environments and collect innovative methods that break new ground while producing rigorous insights. This workshop will draw on invited and other participants’ research, teaching, classroom, and business experiences to think through “mixed methods” for qualitative and quantitative studies of digital and social media systems. Through a series of roundtables and guided discussions, the workshop will focus on best practices for studying digital and social media. As part of these discussions, we also will highlight technical and ethical challenges that arise from our studying cross-platform, digital and social media phenomenon. The output of this workshop will be an open, “co-authored” syllabus for a seminar offering what we might call a mixed-method, “from causal to complicated” approach to digital and social media research, applicable to both researchers and practitioners alike. How to apply April 1, 2016: Paper submission opens. June 15, 2016: Paper submission ends, 11:59pm HST. Submission to one of the the mini-tracks requires a complete paper. Instructions for submission requirements are available here: http://www.hicss.org/#!author-instructions/c1dsb Though the two minitracks are designed to work together, for submitting a paper you must choose one to apply to. Feel free to contact the mini-track organizers if you have questions about which is a better fit for your work. For the pre-conference workshop, application instructions, updates, materials, and a group syllabus will be posted on the workshop website. - See more at: http://culturedigitally.org/2016/04/cfp-studying-social-media-and-digital-i… ————————————————— Jaime Snyder Assistant Professor University of Washington Information School jas1208(a)uw.edu<mailto:jas1208@uw.edu> 206-616-1094

22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2017): Third Call for Papers
by Announce Announcements 06 Jun '16

06 Jun '16

** Third Call for Papers *** 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces IUI 2017 St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus March 13-16, 2017 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Overview ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. Why you should submit to ACM IUI: At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other. The conference brings together people from academia, industry and non-profit organizations and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. It is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and doctoral consortium for graduate students. Submission Full and Short Papers We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user interfaces, applications, interactive and intelligent technologies, empirical studies, or design techniques. IUI 2017 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new concepts or directions for the design of intelligent interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2017". Examples of ACM IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · Intelligent visualization tools · User-Adaptive interaction and personalization · Recommender systems · Intelligent wearable, mobile and ubiquitous interfaces · Modeling and prediction of user behavior · Information retrieval and search · Education and learning-related technologies · Social media analysis · Multi-modal interfaces (speech, gestures, eye gaze, face, physiological information etc.) · Natural language and speech processing · Generation of multimodal content · Big Data and analytics · Smart environments and tangible computing · Intelligent assistants for complex tasks · Collaborative interfaces · Persuasive and assistive technologies in IUI · Affective and aesthetic interfaces · Interactive machine learning · Planning and plan recognition for IUI · Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation · Proactive and agent-based user interaction · Example-and demonstration-based interfaces · Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces Submission Guidelines · Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. · Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of full papers. · Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: 1. Author's names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. 2. Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. 3. Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. For example, "... as shown in our previous user study [2] ..." is not allowed, whereas "... as shown in Smith et al. [2] " is acceptable (because in this case the citation [2] will NOT be perceived as self-citation). Failure to follow these guidelines may results in submissions being rejected without review. Submissions should follow the standard SigCHI format available here: http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… . You may use either the Microsoft Word template or the LaTeX template. Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation. Accepted short papers will be invited either as oral or poster presentation, depending on the quality of the papers. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. Second call for papers Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation A workshop at The Participatory Design Conference (PDC) in Aarhus 2016, August 15. http://www.performingthecommon.se/ting/ <http://www.performingthecommon.se/ting/> Because of the importance of the role and embodiment of the designer/artist in making publics, this workshop calls attention to self-reflective practices in participatory design, and questions how these self-reflective practices can be embedded in the functionality of new publics and design practices. More specifically, the workshop aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? We invite researchers, designers, activists, artists, who in their work are exploring utopian, speculative, and critical design projects as well as designing for and with social movements, alternative societies and relational economies. The specific themes and topics we are interested to revisit and discuss in this workshop are: • Agonistic public spaces versus consensual decision-making • Role of the author/designer/creator/artist in speculative and critical design in relation to participatory design • Exclusion and inclusion in the design practice • Norms in speculative participatory design practices • Institutional conditions for the development and growth of speculative and critical design within a participatory design practice Workshop Participation and Key Dates Participants will be selected to participate in the workshop based on their submitted position-papers. The submission should be between 1,000 to 2,000 words long, and include an image or illustration of a design work or design process. Submission should follow the ACM ICPS format (http://pdc2016.org/formatting-guidelines/ <http://pdc2016.org/formatting-guidelines/>). • Position paper deadline: June 13, 2016 • Author Notification: June 20, 2016 Extended papers will be considered for a special issue in Design Issues.
