Call for papers Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation A workshop at The Participatory Design Conference (PDC) in Aarhus 2016, August 15. http://www.performingthecommon.se/ting/ Because of the importance of the role and embodiment of the designer/artist in making publics, this workshop calls attention to self-reflective practices in participatory design, and questions how these self-reflective practices can be embedded in the functionality of new publics and design practices. More specifically, the workshop aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? We invite researchers, designers, activists, artists, who in their work are exploring utopian, speculative, and critical design projects as well as designing for and with social movements, alternative societies and relational economies. Three PhD scholarships in internet research The Department of Media, Cognition, and Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for three 3-year PhD scholarships. The successful candidates will be affiliated with the Peoples’ Internet (PIN) project sponsored by the Carlsberg Foundation. The candidates are expected to begin October 1, 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter. Description of the project “The Peoples’ Internet – Market, state, and civil society in China, Europe, and the United States” will undertake a comparative study of the internet in different world regions. Digital networks are among the most flexible and universally applicable technologies ever invented by humans. But the many significant variations in the social uses of the internet around the world remain poorly understood. The PIN project compares the current state and future potential of the internet in three centers of the global economy and world politics – China, Europe, and the United States – focusing on the interplay of civil society with the other two key sectors of modern societies: market and state. The PhD candidates will be an integral part of the PIN research group. They will participate both in formal project events and in informal deliberations throughout their affiliation with the project; they will have the opportunity both to pursue personal research interests and to contribute to the overall theoretical and methodological framework of PIN; and they will join a wider interdisciplinary research environment centered in the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Communication and Computing and its research group on Digital Communication and Aesthetics. In addition to coursework and other institutional obligations, the PhD candidates will undertake the following main activities: • six months of ethnographic fieldwork (China, Denmark, or the US) • review of regulatory regimes and cultural traditions in their fieldwork area • participation in analyses of population surveys • contributions to the dissemination of project findings and other outreach. PhD position # 1: The successful PhD candidate must be fluent in spoken and written academic English, and in Mandarin. Prior experience with cross-cultural studies and/or survey research within media and communication studies will be considered an advantage, but is not a requirement. It is expected that the successful candidate will be present, part of the research group, and engaged in the activities of PIN on a daily basis. Departing from the PIN project framework, the PhD project description must include: • a main section outlining preliminary research questions, methodological considerations, and a time schedule for a six-month ethnographic fieldwork in the People’s Republic of China • a section identifying preliminary issues to be addressed in a review of regulatory regimes and cultural traditions in China • a section discussing how insights from the fieldwork may inform and complement the survey component of the PIN project. Prior experience with cross-cultural studies and/or survey research within media and communication studies will be considered an advantage, but is not a requirement. Best regards Jean Automating the Everyday A symposium hosted by the QUT Digital Media Research Centre http://qut.edu.au/research/dmrc | @qutdmrc 8-9 December 2016 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Call for Papers Along with related concepts and trends like artificial intelligence (AI), the algorithmic turn, and big data, automation is central to contemporary discourses of and debates about digital transformation. The entanglement of digital media technologies with material culture, the workplace, and the domestic sphere means our everyday lives are coming into contact with automation as well. But what do we mean when we say ‘automation’ - does it encompass algorithms, sensor networks, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacture, and interoperability? What histories and pre-histories of automation and everyday life might we need to take account of? How are past robotic imaginaries shaping the present—in science and technology and in science fiction alike? Does the current preoccupation with automation signal the endurance of these earlier imaginaries, does it mark a moment of disruption, or does it simply coincide with an industrial pivot on behalf of Silicon Valley toward these areas of innovation, and an accompanying wave of hype? When does the appearance of automation work to elide or obscure various forms of manual, affective and immaterial labour? In this two-day symposium, we invite theoretical and empirical papers that engage with these and other questions, particularly as they intersect with the experience and politics of digital media technologies with everyday life, work and consumption. Dear colleagues: We are developing a state of the art about ICT-Mediated Citizen Engagement and its relation to promotion of democratic governance and new governance regimes. Although we are working with classics like Pippa Norris, we like to explore also any literature related to this problem in Latin America and hopefully, the case of Columbia in South America.
