effective strategies for including mixed media in journal articles?
by Chris Peterson 10 Jun '16

10 Jun '16

Hi AoIR: I’m working on a paper right now about Internet filtering in public institutions (project page <http://mappinginfoaccess.org/about>). The tl;dr is that we FOIA’d every public school and library in Alabama asking for, among other things, configurations of filters, lists of whitelisted/blacklisted sites, categories used, etc. Not every institution responded, but a few dozen did. The upshot is I now have a bunch of screenshots (or things that can be screenshotted) of these configurations and I’m trying to figure out how to fit them into the paper. The point of the paper is to provide empirical evidence supporting/consistent with certain theoretical arguments that have been made about knowledge infrastructures and the disunified/multiple quality of the Internet. Much of the paper is, of course, textual, and I’m working on some tables to summarize the data. But the real richness, I think, comes from seeing the screenshots, which forces you to encounter these alien ontologies of what kind of content is worth filtering. (I didn’t want to attach examples, bc I don’t know how the listserv deals with attachments, but if you want to see some examples, check slides 21-34 <http://cl.ly/3G112H1n1C1w> of my Theorizing the Web presentation; the config images are really fascinating) My basic question is: what are some effective strategies you’ve used (or seen used) for working media artifacts, particularly screenshots, into journal articles? In books, I’ve offset images into little boxes as artifacts that interrupt or lay alongside the text, but I’m not sure that works as well in articles. I don’t necessarily need (or want) the images to be the subject of analysis as much as objects for the reader to encounter that support/confirm the analysis. I suspect this also depends on the journal. I plan to submit to some of the major ones in ‘Internet studies,’ but if you have particular journals that would be good homes for this in topic and in format, I’m definitely open to suggestions! Thanks, — Chris Peterson Research Affiliate, MIT Center for Civic Media

Research Fellow - Social Media and Sleep
by CHRISTINE HINE 10 Jun '16

10 Jun '16

http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ANW720/research-fellow-social-media-and-sleep/ The Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey, UK seek to appoint a Research Fellow full time for 1 year for the project ‘Social Media and Sleep: Ethical agendas in a digital age’, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Sleep provides a particularly interesting case study of recent developments in digital and social media and especially the ethical challenges and opportunities they embody and engender. For example, these technologies have the potential to transform how we ‘know’ good and bad sleep; may come to be embedded within new standards, responsibilities and ideals to become a better or more productive sleeper; and may give rise to a future of work where sleep data becomes wrapped up within company health and wellbeing programmes. The current seed funding aims to: - Develop an international network of researchers - Consider and debate how best to research this area in a way which is reflexive of its own role with regard to these ethical issues - Carry out one-to-one interview with key stakeholders; such as legal experts, sleep experts, clinicians and designers. - Develop a large-scale representative survey to scope general population attitudes and practices As an experienced researcher, you will: - Organise project and network meetings - Organise a methodological symposium - Organise, conduct and analyse qualitative interviews - Draft & design an online questionnaire; and complete basic analysis of findings - Producing written reports of the findings suitable for different audiences (academic, policy, practice) and contributing to the dissemination of findings through stakeholder events. - Take the lead on drafting an application for funding for a larger study - Contribute to the design and organisation of stakeholder and other dissemination events (potentially including a large scale event at the 2017 British Science Association Festival) You will hold a PhD or equivalent in any social science discipline, which should ideally include a strong research methods component. Experience of undertaking interviews and designing and conducting online surveys would also be valuable. An interest in the sociology of sleep and/or science and technology studies would also be advantageous. The post is based in the Department of Sociology, working with the Principal Investigator, Dr Robert Meadows. Please direct informal enquiries to R.Meadows(a)surrey.ac.uk Other key members of the research team include Dr Christine Hine and Dr Paul Stoneman (Surrey), Professor Simon Williams (Warwick) and Professor Jon Gabe (RHUL). The post is full time for 12 months, although other flexible arrangements (e.g. job share) can be discussed. Some weekend work is required for this post, as part of a 36 hour week. Successful candidates will be expected to start in October 2016. Interview date: Wednesday 20th July 2016 http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/ANW720/research-fellow-social-media-and-sleep/

Database reading list
by Amanda Licastro 08 Jun '16

08 Jun '16

Hello Air Followers, I am looking to compile a list of readings on the database. I am specifically looking for information about how data is collected, organized, and manipulated in the humanities and social sciences, and even more specifically in terms of our teaching/assessment materials. Take, for example: Drucker, Johanna. “Database Narratives in Book and Online.” *Journal of Electronic Publishing* 18.1 (2015): n. pag. Web. http://quod.lib.umich.edu/j/jep/3336451.0018.113?view=text;rgn=main Price, Kenneth M. “Edition, Project, Database, Archive, Thematic Research Collection: What’s in a Name?” *Digital Humanities Quarterly* 3.3 (2009): n. pag. Print. http://digitalhumanities.org:8081/dhq/vol/3/3/000053/000053.html I will create a public Zotero group of these materials and invite anyone on the list who is interested once I collect your suggestions. Thank you in advance, Amanda Amanda Licastro, PhD Assistant Professor of Digital Rhetoric, Stevenson University in Maryland http://digitocentrism.commons.gc.cuny.edu/ @amandalicastro

+Just out+ Internet on the Outstation: The Digital Divide and Remote Aboriginal Communities
by Geert Lovink 08 Jun '16

08 Jun '16

http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/no-19-internet-on-the-outstatio… <http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/no-19-internet-on-the-outstatio…> Internet on the Outstation provides a new take on the digital divide. Why do whole communities choose to go without the internet when the infrastructure for access is in place? Through an in-depth exploration of the digital practices occurring in Aboriginal households in remote central Australia, the authors address both the dynamics of internet adoption and the benefits that flow from its use. The book challenges us to think beyond the standard explanations for the digital divide, arguing that digital exclusion is not just another symptom of social exclusion. At its heart, Internet on the Outstation is a compelling examination of equality and difference in the digital age, asking: Can internet access help resolve the disadvantages associated with remote living? Internet on the Outstation is the result of a multi-year research collaboration, which included a trial of internet infrastructure, training and maintenance in three small Aboriginal communities (known as outstations). During the research phase, Ellie Rennie, Eleanor Hogan and Julian Thomas were based at the Swinburne Institute for Social Research in Melbourne. Robin Gregory and Andrew Crouch worked at the Centre for Appropriate Technology, an Indigenous-owned research and training organization in Alice Springs. Alyson Wright worked for the Central Land Council, the representative body for traditional owners of the central Australia region. Authors: Ellie Rennie, Eleanor Hogan, Robin Gregory, Andrew Crouch, Alyson Wright and Julian Thomas. Editorial support: Miriam Rasch. Cover design: Katja van Stiphout. DTP: Léna Robin. EPUB development: Léna Robin. Printer: Print on Demand. Publisher: Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam, 2016. ISBN: 978-94-92302-07-6.

Greetings! Does your institution offer an online course on Interpersonal Communication? If so, what are the rationales for offering such a course online? If you are against offering an online course on Interpersonal Communication, what are your concerns? The faculty in my institution are debating about offering interpersonal communication as an online course. Your insights about this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Looking forward to hearing from you. Shing-Ling Sarina Chen Dept. of Communication Studies Univ. of Northern Iowa

agency / neutrality of algorithms
by Alex Gekker 07 Jun '16

07 Jun '16

Hi list, I've been running into a lot of writing criticising the notion of "algorithms are neutral" recently, but yet to find a scholarly work that tackles the subject yet. Any recommendations? Here are some examples for the types of arguments I'm interested in: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/04/go-tweak-yourself-fac… https://socialmediacollective.org/2016/05/18/facebook-trends/ thanks, Alex. ======= Alex Gekker, PhD Candidate (Promovendus), Media and Culture, Utrecht University. Anyone studying Ingress or whole game play histories?
by Peter Timusk 07 Jun '16

07 Jun '16

Interestingly Eve Online saves all one's 'in game' messages and chat logs to simple text files on the gamer's C drive on their PC. I saved all these files over multiple PC's I have played the game on. I have almost my whole game history in small text files. A toy big data problem as there are at least 500,000 files now. Ingress a GPS cell phone exercise game sends e-mail/gmail notifications when one's landmarks are attacked by the other team. I have 5,000 e-mails after a few months playing. I have successfully compiled and parsed these files, the Eve game logs and the Ingress gmail notifications which can be a form of record of my entire game play. I can look at my first days in Eve and the huge risks I took in game play not knowing these were risks. Risk is a nice topic in gaming because of gambling studies and the policy desire to help compulsive gamblers. Anyone else analyzing whole game playing histories as data? Would you have thoughts on tracing out behaviour in game playing log files? Peter Timusk B.Math (statistics) B.A. (legal studies) graduate school certificate in systems sciences, Working in government statistics in Canada.
