Call for papers: Imagining Digital India: Power, Control and Resistance

*CALL FOR PAPERS* <http://app1.ftrans01.com/linktrack/lt.pl?id=10960=d0lVAVBWWwVRHQQCCAMGVAVUU…> *Special Issue:* *Imagining Digital India: Power, Control and Resistance* *Guest Editor:* *Mohan J Dutta,* *National University of Singapore* The digital imaginary marks the catalytic emergence of neoliberalism as an organizing framework for Indian political economy. The realm of the digital is the site of reworking of the state, civil society, and market relationships, positioning a locally specific and culturally situated narrative of the digital as an anchor to the imagination of the nation. Citizenship is constituted by the digital, in the ambit of the participation of a skilled workforce in an information technology-driven economy on one hand and in the digitally mediated global free market on the other. The digital as a site of desire and affect is thus the site for reworking of power and control. Simultaneously, amid the large scale deployment of the digital as an instrument of neoliberal hegemony, communities across local spaces are voicing their resistance through networks of relationships constituted digitally. What then are the interplays among the realms of power, control and resistance in the context of digital India? This special issue offers scholarship exploring the circulation of capital, affect, and communication through digital platforms. It also invites scholarship on digital resistance as a site of political economic transformations in India. <http://app1.ftrans01.com/linktrack/lt.pl?id=10960=d0lVAVBWWwVRHQQCCAMGVAVUU…>*Email address for submissions: **JOCCeditor(a)micamail.in* <JOCCeditor(a)micamail.in?Subject=> (*Address to:* *Editor-In Chief, Journal of Creative Communications, MICA - The School of Ideas, Shela Ahmadabad, India*) Please read through the *Call for Papers* <http://app1.ftrans01.com/linktrack/lt.pl?id=10960=d0lVAVBWWwVRHQQCCAMGVAVUU…> for more information and view the *Manuscript Submission Guidelines* <http://app1.ftrans01.com/linktrack/lt.pl?id=10960=d0lVAVBWWwVRHQQCCAMGVAVUU…> for full author instructions. VIDEO: Music Licensing: Innovations for Modern Times @techpolicyinst @NYUEngelberg
by Joly MacFie 22 Jun '16

Later today, Jun 22 2016, the inaugural meeting of the Open Music Initiative <http://www.open-music.org/> takes place in NYC. The OMI is a collaboration between the Berklee school and the MIT Media Lab and others to "to promote and advance the development of open source standards and innovation related to music," However, when I got in touch and offered to livestream the meeting, I was told "the meeting is closed to the public so live streaming won't be permitted". It seems old habits die hard. By total contrast, the Engelberg/TPI conference last Friday, archived below, was an exemplar of the kind of open multistakeholder forum that we've come to expect in modern policy and standards development. Kudos. joly posted: "On June 17 2016 the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy and the Technology Policy Institute, hosted a conference Music Licensing: Innovations for Modern Times at NYU Law School in NYC. Reminder: Automating the Everyday, 8-9 December, QUT - CFP closing soon
by Jean Burgess 21 Jun '16

21 Jun '16

Dear colleagues A reminder that the due date for the submission of abstracts for Automating the Everyday is at the end of next week. We’ve already got some really interesting submissions, keep ‘em coming! Also a reminder that December is glorious, summery summer in Brisbane. Cheers Jean Shareable URL for the CFP: https://goo.gl/Rh8Czd Symposium email: autoeveryday(a)gmail.com AUTOMATING THE EVERYDAY A symposium hosted by the QUT Digital Media Research Centre 8-9 December 2016 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Call for Papers Along with related concepts and trends like artificial intelligence (AI), the algorithmic turn, and big data, automation is central to contemporary discourses of and debates about digital transformation. The entanglement of digital media technologies with material culture, the workplace, and the domestic sphere means our everyday lives are coming into contact with automation as well. But what do we mean when we say ‘automation’ - does it encompass algorithms, sensor networks, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacture, and interoperability? What histories and pre-histories of automation and everyday life might we need to take account of? How are past robotic imaginaries shaping the present—in science and technology and in science fiction alike? Does the current preoccupation with automation signal the endurance of these earlier imaginaries, does it mark a moment of disruption, or does it simply coincide with an industrial pivot on behalf of Silicon Valley toward these areas of innovation, and an accompanying wave of hype? When does the appearance of automation work to elide or obscure various forms of manual, affective and immaterial labour? In this two-day symposium, we invite theoretical and empirical papers that engage with these and other questions, particularly as they intersect with the experience and politics of digital media technologies with everyday life, work and consumption. Themes and topics that might be covered include: * Automation and the home (e.g., the Internet of Things) * Automation and work (e.g., mechanisation vs automation, microtasking, microsurveillance, and time management) * Automation and locative media, wayfinding and transport * Automation and AI in service and consumption, (Siri, customer service chatbots, ‘automated’ checkout, drone deliveries) * Sex, romance and robotics * Automated content curation and communication in digital and social media * Health, fitness and assisted living Submission process and key dates Please submit paper proposals to autoeveryday(a)gmail.com <mailto:autoeveryday@gmail.com> by 30 June 2016. Proposals should include an abstract of 250–400 words along with a brief bio of no more than 100 words. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by 15 July 2016. Draft papers (3000–4000 words) of accepted presentations are to be submitted by 18 November 2016 for sharing and discussion among among symposium participants. Following the symposium, presenters will be invited to submit full-length papers to be considered for publication as part of a themed collection. We are approaching major international communication, cultural and media studies journals with a proposal for a special issue on the symposium theme. Cybersecurity in a Digital Age Workshop
by Richard Denny Taylor 21 Jun '16

21 Jun '16

Colleagues, Perhaps this Workshop may be of interest to some of you. Richard Legal and Policy Dimensions of Cybersecurity A by-invitation experts' workshop to be held at George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs September 28-29, 2016 The security of information networks and databases is now a critical element of national security and economic competitiveness. Rapid growth in e-commerce, banking, and communication systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased efficiency and driven economic growth, but by necessity these systems preclude consumers' control over how and where their data are collected, archived and processed. Recent high-profile breaches of security at banks and retailers, coupled with secret and not-so-secret efforts by foreign governments and rogue actors to attack critical information infrastructures, have heightened these concerns. Legal and policy responses to the cybersecurity challenge are just as important as technological ones. To focus much-needed attention on this field of study, the IIP invites authors to submit abstracts addressing the policy and legal aspects of information security, privacy, data protection, cybersecurity-related legislation, and critical cyber-infrastructure protection. Authors of the selected papers will be invited to present and discuss them during a 2 day by-invitation-only experts workshop held at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs on September 28-29 (Wed.-Thu.), 2016. Each paper will be assigned a respondent recruited from the local academic/policy/advocacy communities and will be allotted a full hour for presentation, response and discussion. A reception and formal dinner provide room for social interaction. This workshop is twelfth in a series of workshops organized by the IIP since 2011, in support of its Journal of Information Policy, published by the IIP in partnership with the Penn State University Press (http://www.psupress.org/Journals/jnls_JIP.html) Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for peer review to the Journal, with the successful papers presented in special issues dedicated to each workshop. The JIP has previously conducted workshops on a variety of topics including the future of broadband policy, digital diversity, new ICTs and democracy, media policy and advocacy, campaign funding and media, intellectual property, and more. For programs of previous workshops see: http://comm.psu.edu/research/centers/iip/conferences-and-worskhops. Possible topics for the workshop include the following: . Critical infrastructure protection, including information and energy networks . Cybersecurity policies and governance in nation states . Cybersecurity policies and governance in transnational organizations . Threats and vulnerabilities to cybersecurity and the policies they invoke . Information policy and cybersecurity in the age of IoT . Data breaches and the law - regulation, enforcement, protection, and damages . Cybersecurity and U.S. courts . Cybersecurity and privacy legislation-federal and state efforts to balance cyber security and civil liberties . The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and consumer online data protection enforcement-efforts, failures, future models . The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and web-based data regulation . Consumer data protection - an international legal and diplomatic conundrum The Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) . Cybersecurity models . Cybersecurity management . Cybersecurity concerns and democracy . Strategic planning and security strategy . History of cybersecurity policy and governance . Security education, training and awareness . The future of cybersecurity: uncertainties and scenarios This workshop is made possible with financial contributions from the Penn State Colleges of Communications, Information Sciences and Technology, and Law, and the Office of the Provost, and with organization assistance from the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs. Abstracts of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be submitted to pennstateiip(a)psu.edu <mailto:pennstateiip@psu.edu> by July 15, 2016. Please write IIP_CYBERSECURITY: YOUR NAME in the subject line. Presenters will be notified by August 15, 2016 regarding acceptance. Accepted papers will need to be submitted by September 19, 2016.
