CFP "Countercultures of Data" - Special Issue of Philosophy & Technology
by Anna Lauren Hoffmann 28 Jun '16

28 Jun '16

I'm excited to share this CFP for an upcoming special issue of Philosophy & Technology. Please feel free to share widely! -Anna ----- Call for Papers for *Philosophy and Technology*’s special issue on Countercultures of Data Guest Editor Anna Lauren Hoffmann, School of Information – University of California, Berkeley About the Issue 25 years ago, Sandra Harding—in her influential book *Whose Science? Whose Knowledge? Thinking from Women’s Lives*—detailed and extended critical debates surrounding knowledge production and practices in science and technology. Collectively, these “countercultures of science” confronted the “problematics, agendas, ethics, and consequences” of scientific and technological production head on. Today, these same perspectives offer insight into the realm of data science, as philosophers, scholars, and practitioners alike grapple with ethical questions in a world where discourse, design, and governance increasingly revolve around “big” data and quantifiable knowledge. This special issue will bring together rigorous conceptual and theoretical perspectives on what might best be called—following Harding—emerging “countercultures of data.” In particular, this issue will further critical and philosophical thinking about the theories, methods, institutions, and technological arrangements that underwrite or support data science in various industries and forms. Combined, contributions to the special issue will put forward a more realistic assessment of possible futures for a data driven world. We invite submissions related (but not limited) to: - Race and Data Science - Theories of Property, Labor, and Data - Political Economies of Data - Data and Imperialism - Feminist Perspectives on Data Science - Data, Bodies, and Disability - Data, Infrastructure, and the Environment - Data, Philosophy, and the Law - Communities and Data - Data and Queer Subjects - Data and/as Human Subjects in Research - Data Science and Epistemic Justice Timetable for Submissions October 24, 2016: Deadline for paper submissions December 21, 2016: Deadline reviews papers February 6, 2017: Deadline revised papers 2017: Publication of the special issue Submission Details To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select the special article type: “COUNTERCULTURES OF DATA” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editor. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. (The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions.) About the Journal The journal addresses the expanding scope and unprecedented impact of technologies, in order to improve the critical understanding of the conceptual nature and practical consequences, and hence provide the conceptual foundations for their fruitful and sustainable developments. The journal welcomes high-quality submissions, regardless of the tradition, school of thought or disciplinary background from which they derive. The journal's Editor-in-Chief is Luciano Floridi (Oxford). Contact For any further information please contact: Anna Lauren Hoffmann - annalauren(a)berkeley.edu

CFP CHIPLAY2016: WIPs, Doctoral Consortium, and Industry Case Studies
by Nicole Crenshaw 27 Jun '16

27 Jun '16

***************************************************************************** * * CHI PLAY 2016: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION - WIPs, Doctoral Consortium, & Industry Case Studies * Submission Deadlines: * July 15, 2016: Works-in-Progress, doctoral consortium, and industry case studies * * CHI PLAY 2016 * The 3rd ACM SIGCHI Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play * http://chiplay.org <https://email.lincoln.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?SURL=yA8DYPuy8mgBG5vwBFHYpXylh4y…> * Twitter: #chiplay * * Austin, Texas * October 16 - 19, 2016 * ***************************************************************************** CHI PLAY is an international and interdisciplinary conference (by ACM SIGCHI) for researchers and professionals across all areas of play, games and human-computer interaction (HCI). We call this area “player-computer interaction”. The goal of the conference is to highlight and foster discussion of current high quality research in games and HCI as foundations for the future of digital play. To this end, the conference will feature streams that blend academic research and games with research papers, interactive demos, and industry case studies. CHI PLAY grew out of the increasing work around games and play emerging from the ACM annual conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) as well as smaller conferences such as Fun and Games and Gamification. CHI PLAY is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group for Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). IMPORTANT DATES WORKS-IN PROGRESS, DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM Paper deadline: 15th July, 2016 Review deadline: 5th August, 2016 Decisions: 12th August, 2016 Camera-Ready Deadline: 19th August, 2016 SUBMISSIONS As a SIGCHI-sponsored conference, CHI PLAY will consider submissions related to games and play. We encourage submissions on novel and innovative game interactions and mechanics and acknowledge that contributions on systems research may involve less extensive evaluation than more traditional research papers. We welcome submissions from all topics in interactive game research that are relevant to player-computer interaction, including but not limited to the following: - Game Interaction - Novel Game Control - Novel Implementation Techniques that Affect Player Experience - Evaluation of Feedback and Display Technologies for Games - Gamification - Neurogaming - Persuasive Games - Games for Health, Learning and Change - Exertion Games - Player Experience - Virtual and Augmented Reality Games - Games User Research - Game Evaluation Methods - Psychology of Players and Games - Player Typologies - Accessible and Inclusive Game Design - Novel Game Mechanics Impacting Player Experience - Casual Game Design Studies - Social Game Experiences - Serious Games - Alternate Reality Games - Tools for Game Creation - Developer Experiences and Studies of Developers - Industry Case Studies Although we are interested in papers on the effects of various technologies, software, or algorithms on player or developer experience, technical contributions without clear indications of the impact on players or developers are not within the scope of CHI PLAY. WORKS-IN-PROGRESS (6 pages excluding references in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract Format.) While in previous years authors submitted a poster design in addition to their extended abstract, this year submissions will comprise an extended abstract only. Can include an optional video describing the work (5 minutes maximum). Submissions are not anonymous and should include all author names, affiliations, and contact information. DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM (4 pages excluding references in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract Format + a 3-4 page Appendix.) The CHI PLAY 2016 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for Doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests in games and HCI in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of distinguished researchers. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their dissertation work to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along that they can no longer make changes. In addition to stating how you will gain from participation, both you and your advisor should be clear on what you can contribute to the Doctoral Consortium. INDUSTRY CASE STUDIES CHI PLAY is looking for speakers who can provide insights into the theory and practice of “player-computer interaction” within the games industry. Speaking at CHI PLAY is a great way to share insights gained from development and operations to an expert audience. Presentations should be short (20 minutes including Q&A), issue-oriented, and provide concrete examples. They can contain both practical and theoretical information. Postmortems and case studies are welcome. If you’re interested in being an industry speaker then please contact the industry chairs. We will make final decisions on speakers by September 10th. Note that speakers can attend the conference without paying the registration fee. -- Nicole Crenshaw PhD Candidate Information and Computer Sciences University of California, Irvine http://sites.uci.edu/nicolecrenshaw/

mapping american interest in the rest of the world
by kalev leetaru 27 Jun '16

27 Jun '16

Thought this would be of great interest to those of you studying media geography and online bias. The Google Trends group created for me a map of how often Americans have searched about each country in the world thus far in 2016. Turns out it matches quite closely the attention paid to each country by American television coverage 2009-2016. Africa, Central Asia and the Baltics are standouts, along with Southern Europe. Thought this was quite fascinating to pair up all of the work being done on media geography and online bias with the use of search volume as a proxy for American public interest in those countries. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2016/06/27/do-americans-… ~Kalev

by AJ Kelton 27 Jun '16

27 Jun '16

The Journal of Emerging Learning Design (ELDj) and the 7th Annual Emerging Learning Design Conference (ELDc17) are looking for reviews for articles and proposals, respectively. - The ELDj is currently collecting proceedings articles from the 6th Annual Emerging Learning Design conference, which took place on June 2 & 3. Review of submissions will begin in early August. The expected publication of the proceedings issue is January, 2017. - ELDj has also announced its first *Special Issue*. A call for submissions will be going out shortly but the theme of ELDj's first Special Issue will be *Digital Humanities*. Submissions for this Special Issue will be due in late fall and the publication date will be June 2nd, 2017. - ELDc17 is looking for reviewers for session proposals for our Annual Conference, which will take place on June 1st and 2nd, 2017. Details on theme and the call for submissions will be coming out later this summer. Review will begin in late fall, 2016. The review process is simple and straight-forward and takes place entire online. The process is blind, so being a reviewer does not preclude submitting. Reviewers are asked to consider a very limited number of submissions, in order to help reduce the work load and time commitment. The only thing we ask in return is that reviewers agree to respond within approximately 2 weeks. Those interested in reviewing for the ELDj, ELDc17, or both, are asked to complete this short online form <https://chssmontclair.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4NkJ4v2GP06vPz7>. http://bit.ly/eldvol If you have any questions on the review process for either ELDj or ELDc17, please do not hesitate to contact me at keltona(a)mail.montclair.edu aj -- ----- AJ Kelton Director of Emerging & Instructional Technology College of Humanities and Social Sciences - Montclair State University Doctoral Candidate, ABD Educational Communication and Technology - New York University ---------- Emerging Learning Design 2017 Conference Chair http://eld.montclair.edu Twitter: @ELDConf <http://twitter.com/ELDConf> Hashtag: #ELD17 ELD Question?
