Yet these poor decisions are leading to epidemics, which represent some of the greatest challenges we face as a society today. Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), which include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, account for approx. 60% of total premature deaths worldwide. These diseases share the same four behavioural risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful consumption of alcohol and can be prevented and sometimes even reversed with simple lifestyle changes. Eating more healthily, exercising more appropriately, sleeping and relaxing more, as well as simply being more aware of one's state of health are all things that would lead to improved health. Yet knowing exactly what to change and how, implementing changes and maintaining changes over long time periods are all things people find challenging. These are also problems, for which we believe recommender systems can provide assistance by offering specific, tailored suggestions for behavioural change. In recent years recommender systems for health has become a popular topic within the RecSys community and a selection of empirical contributions and demo systems have been published. Efforts to date, however have been sporadic and lack coordination. We lack shared infrastructure such as datasets, appropriate cross-disciplinary knowledge, even agreed upon goals. It is our aim to use this workshop as a vehicle to: ** Establish the problem as a prominent RecSys topic ** Create a community of researchers who will determine a concrete research agenda for health in RecSys ** Attract scientists from other domains to RecSys: health (e.g. sports, nutrition, medicine), psychology, signal processing, wearables, HCI, etc. ** Create new ideas for collaboration, particularly cross-domain collaborations ** Establish shared infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics, but are not limited to: ** Motivation - increasing motivation, understanding motivation, utilising psychological models, gamification ** Algorithms for Health Recommendations ** Interfaces - Explanations/Presentation, Feedback, Usability ** Persuasive Design ** Sensors - e.g. activity tracking, context detection, quantified self, motivation by self assessment ** Mobile devices ** Gamification - e.g. Making exercise or diet fun ** Social Motivation - Inclusion of Social Context, Coactivity and Group Recommenders ** Knowledge representation - Transfer of domain knowledge to digital systems ** Ethics - Gap between recommendations and medical advice ** Ease of use - embedding systems into everyday life Learning about health ** User modelling, behavioural analytics and behavioural change Submissions: ============ We solicit short research papers (up to 4 pages) & short postion papers (up to 2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. Papers should be submitted in EasyChair to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=healthrecsys2016 Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must be written in English; * contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; * be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template ( http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; * be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; All papers will be peer-reviewed, must not be under review in any other conference, workshop or journal (at the time of submission), and must contain novel contributions. Reminder CFP/Social Sciences
by T. Towner 24 Jun '16

24 Jun '16

Reminder CFP: Full manuscript for Special Issue "Social Media and Political Participation" in Social Sciences (Edited by Terri L. Towner, Oakland University) Manuscript Deadline: Full manuscripts due by June 30, 2016. Social media’s role in politics, campaigning, and elections has been the focus of scholarly research for over a decade. Scholars have examined how political candidates, parties, and citizens use social media during campaigns as well as how social media influences citizens’ political attitudes and behaviors. Despite extensive study, the empirical literature linking social media use and attention, particularly Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, to political participation is mixed and thus, inconclusive. Some research suggests that social media facilitates and promotes political and civic participation whereas other research does not. Therefore, this special issue seeks to further clarify the link between social media and political engagement. This call is particularly interested in research that examines relatively understudied social media platforms, such as Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest, and SnapChat. In addition, this call encourages submissions that examine many forms of political participation, as this concept can be a multidimensional activity including voting, protesting, marching, blogging, tweeting, volunteering, sharing online content, emailing, and more. If you are interested in submitting, please see the website for more information and submission instructions: http://www.mdpi.com/journal/socsci/special_issues/political_participation Regards, Terri Towner -- Associate Professor Pi Sigma Alpha Faculty Advisor Oakland University Department of Political Science *Submit to the PSA Undergraduate Journal of Politics! * http://www.psajournal.org/

CfP: Cultural studies in the context of object-oriented philosophy and object-oriented ontology
by magdalena zdrodowska 24 Jun '16

24 Jun '16

Dear All, "Cultural Studies Review" ("Przeglad Kulturoznawczy"), academic journal affiliated at the Jagiellonian University, Poland and Polish Academy of Sciences, invites you to contribute to new volume on the relations between cultural studies and object-oriented philosophy (OOP) and object-oriented ontology (OOO). Below please find call for paper with all the deatils. Regards, Magda Zdrodowska You are encouraged to submit articles for the new issue of "Cultural Studies Review" (“Przegląd Kulturoznawczy”) devoted to cultural studies in the context of object-oriented philosophy and object-oriented ontology (OOP, OOO). The last decades in critical humanities elapsed under the banner of a return to materiality. The ecological crisis, tensions within the capitalist system, and exhaustion of the energy of poststructuralism have forced a reassessment of the notion of matter. While the twentieth-century critical theory organized the political debate around epistemological issues, the materialistic tendencies, more and more strongly present in the humanities of the twenty-first century, are currently re-introducing metaphysics into the area of political reflection. It appears that none of the new trends in materialistic reflection have generated as many controversies as speculative realism in its various guises (object-oriented philosophy or object-oriented ontology). The third issue of "Cultural Studies Review" will be an occasion to use the dictionary of object-oriented philosophy in the field of cultural studies. Ever since speculative realism emerged in the area of contemporary philosophy—largely as social ferment on scientific blogs—its findings, insights, and methodological suggestions have been quickly applied to reflections on technology, material culture, and contemporary art. The dOCUMENTA festival (12) has established object-oriented philosophy as one of the most significant trends in contemporary reflections on the aesthetic experience and on the condition of the art market. Jussi Parikka and Levi Bryant find use for OOO/OOP in the archeology of media and in the contemporary studies on technology. OOO/OOP appears as a methodological basis in reflections on such different phenomena as the ecological crisis, immaterial labor, algorithmization, or post-digital aesthetics. Its emphasis on the study of relationships allows cultural studies to readdress the issue of agency, work, and ideology. Speculative realism appears to be the most radical and promising attempt at transcending poststructuralism. The sources of this impulse may be sought in works by A. Badiou or Q. Meillasoux, and inspiration may be found in the works of, among others, M. Heidegger and, notably, of K. Twardowski. Speculative realists (including A. Toscano, G. Harman, L. R. Bryant, I. Bogost, R. Brassier) refute the basic relationship that has organized philosophical debates concerning our thinking of reality from the times of Kant: the subject-world relationship. They introduce the concept of the object, which can be man, Pegasus, or an atom. The anti-humanism of speculative realism thus allows us to locate this project within broadly-understood posthumanism, in close proximity to the actor-network theory or STS (science, technology and society studies); however, its (seemingly?) nihilistic provenance generates a number of critical opinions, which, in the anti-humanism of OOP, discern the dangerous anti-critical turn reproducing the spirit of contemporary cognitive capitalism. The criticism of object-oriented philosophy resonates strongly in contemporary feminism, queer theory, new materialism, and psychoanalysis in the context of debates on the political nature of the theories and the concept of agency. In the next issue of "Cultural Studies Review" we would like to discuss the proposals of object-oriented philosophy in the context of cultural studies. We are interested in the following issues: — object-oriented philosophy as the super-science of culture? — object-oriented philosophy and actor-network theory in cultural studies; — “aesthetics as the first philosophy”—aesthetic experiences in the face of object-oriented philosophy; — object-oriented philosophy and material culture; — object-oriented philosophy and immaterial and affective labor; — criticism of speculative realism—is critical theory possible without a subject? — object-oriented philosophy and the materialistic theory of media; — object-oriented philosophy and the philosophy of science and technology; — object-oriented philosophy in the face of emancipatory projects. Editors of the issue: Michał Gulik, Samuel Nowak *Deadline for submission of articles: July 31st, 2016* Date of publication: October/November 2016

22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2017): Third Call for Workshop Proposals
by Announce Announcements 24 Jun '16

24 Jun '16

** Third Call for Workshop Proposals *** 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces IUI 2017 St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus March 13-16, 2017 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Overview ACM IUI 2017 is the 22nd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. The 22nd edition of the conference will be held in Limassol, Cyprus. Limassol (or Lemesos) is a multicultural bustling town, flanked by two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion, and guarded by the Amathusian Aphrodite and Appolo Hylates. It is a town of great visual diversity and contrast from spectacular seafront views, historic places like the mediaeval Castle, and Byzantine churches. Along the 17 km long sandy beaches, two Marinas, world renowned 5 star hotels, and a most exciting dining, shopping, nightlife and yachting scene create a year-round vibrant lifestyle well beyond the expectations of a Mediterranean island. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI), with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both more traditional HCI approaches, as well as solutions that involve state-of-the art AI techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from any relevant arena: academia, business, or non-profit organizations. IUI 2017 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to: · "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. · "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). · "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. · "Project centric" workshops that may be closely related to the scope of an existing large scale (e.g. EU funded) project. · "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hack-a-thons around selected topics with individual or team participation. Proposal Format Note: The key to a successful workshop submission is to CONTACT THE CHAIRS WITH YOUR IDEAS (workshop2017(a)iui.acm.org) and work together to prepare an exciting proposal! Workshop proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions from SIGCHI Paper Format, http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… . Please submit your proposal by e-mail to the workshop chairs at workshop2017(a)iui.acm.org. The proposals should be organized as follows: · Name and title: A one-word workshop acronym and a full title. · Description of workshop topic and goal: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to IUI and its interest for the IUI 2017 audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the workshop is of particular interest. · Organizers: Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the workshop organizers. This can be a single person or a group of people. Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Please indicate the primary contact person and the organizers who plan to attend the workshop. · Previous history: List of previous workshops that were held on the topic including the conferences that hosted past workshops and the number of participants. Also please provide the list of other workshops organized by workshop organizers in the past. · Workshop program committee: Names and affiliation of the members of the workshop program committee that will evaluate the workshop submissions. · Participants: A statement saying how many participants you expect and how you plan to invite participants for the workshop. We recommend the proposal to include the names of at least 10 people who have expressed interest to participate in the workshop. · Workshop format: A brief description of the workshop format regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, demonstrations, and general discussion. · Length: Full-day or half-day. · Proposal format: Workshop proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions from SIGCHI: http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… . Additional Guidelines · Workshop proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop chairs and the IUI 2017 program committee chairs. · Organizers: We strongly encourage the workshop organizers to attend IUI and take part in their workshop. This can make the workshops more appealing for the participants and strengthen the discussion part. · Workshop summary: An extended abstract (max. 3 pages) with a summary of the workshop goals and an overview of the workshop topics will be included in the ACM Digital Library for IUI 2017. · Workshop proceedings: At the convenience of the workshop organizers, we will arrange a joint volume of online proceedings for the workshop papers. Workshops should request the authors to submit papers in the ACM SIGCHI Paper Format. · Cancellation: Workshops with fewer than 10 submissions by December 23, 2016 may be cancelled. This will be done in consultation between the workshop chairs of IUI 2017 and the workshop organizers. Additionally, we strongly encourage to have workshop organizers from different institutions and research communities, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that attracts various types of contributions and ensures rich interactions. The organizers of accepted workshops are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Workshop organizers will maintain their own web site with updated information about the workshop and the IUI 2017 web site will refer to the workshop site. The workshop organizers will coordinate the paper sollicitation, collection, and review process, and coordinate the production of the joint online proceedings with IUI 2017 workshop chairs.
