Persistent Conversation CFP | 50th Anniversary HICSS | Deadline June 15
by Yoram Kalman 26 May '16

26 May '16

The Persistent Conversation minitrack at HICSS is back. We invite you to submit your work to the upcoming 50^th anniversary HICSS. The CFP is here: [1]http://www.hicss.org/#!persistent-conversation/c236g ABOUT THE MINITRACK: A significant consequence of communication technologies is that conversations are no longer ephemeral and volatile. Most conversations mediated by technology leave a persistent record and become persistent conversations. This persistence transforms the essence of conversation, and it is the focus of extensive academic and applied research. The persistent conversation minitrack is the home of this research at HICSS. The minitrack was launched in 1999 by Susan Herring and Tom Erickson, and was led by them until 2010. For details of the rich history of this minitrack and the accepted papers see Tom Erickson's page at: [2]http://tomeri.org/HICSS_PC_History.html The submission deadline is June 15. For other important dates, see [3]http://www.hicss.org/#!importantdates/c1j3s If you have any questions, contact the minitrack co-chairs: Sheizaf Rafaeli (Primary Contact( University of Haifa [4]sheizaf(a)rafaeli.net Yoram M Kalman The Open University of Israel [5]yoramka(a)openu.ac.il Carmel Kent University of Haifa [6]kent.carmel(a)gmail.com -- Yoram Kalman, PhD [7]www.kalmans.com Cell: +972 54 574 7375 References Visible links 1. http://www.hicss.org/#!persistent-conversation/c236g 2. http://tomeri.org/HICSS_PC_History.html 3. http://www.hicss.org/#!importantdates/c1j3s 4. mailto:sheizaf@rafaeli.net 5. mailto:yoramka@openu.ac.il 6. mailto:kent.carmel@gmail.com 7. http://www.kalmans.com/ Hidden links: 8. http://www.hicss.org/#%21persistent-conversation/c236g 9. http://www.hicss.org/#%21importantdates/c1j3s 10. mailto:sheizaf@rafaeli.net 11. mailto:yoramka@openu.ac.il 12. mailto:kent.carmel@gmail.com

Call for abstracts: Making sense of the value of personal data (MyData 2016 workshop)
by Tuukka Lehtiniemi 26 May '16

26 May '16

Dear AoIR people, FYI a conference & workshop that some on this list might be interested in. -------- Call for abstracts: Making sense of the value of personal data (http://mydata2016.org/call-for-abstracts/) MyData 2016 is an international conference that takes place in Helsinki in end of August / early September. The purpose of the conference is to find ways to unleash the value of personal data through human-centric data management and technological innovation. The event will bring together up to 1000 participants from businesses, the research community, civil society, government and local communities. One track in the conference takes the form of an academic workshop on August 31st. RATIONALE In the workshop we aim to unpack and clarify the “ways to unleash the value of personal data,” both the unleashing and the value, from the point of view of people. What does it mean for personal data to be valuable to people? What is the value of disclosing data, choosing to keep it secret, or the ability to harness it for individual, social or societal purposes? In particular, how to understand and assess this value? Personal data is clearly valuable to firms, who are able to aggregate data over several individuals and contexts. Personal data does bring valuable benefits to people themselves too. Valuable outcomes to people might include personalized or targeted services, and the possibility to generate and employ personal data for self-reflection. At the same time, the increasing necessity to submit to ubiquitous data extraction processes brings along subjective privacy harms. Disclosing data can also lead to tangible, but as of yet unforeseeable, negative consequences at some point in the future. The social nature of personal data makes this also a social question: data about me, and the consequences of sharing it or keeping it secret, may concern also others or the society at large. Online services are often accessible only after agreeing to data collection and use policies, and firms have framed this as a value exchange of personal data to services. In cases, the users of services may see themselves as the rightful beneficiary of more of the value generated via their data. The current data collection and use practices expect people to be able to make an informed analysis of the benefits and costs of disclosing their data, a practice that is riddled with conceptual and practical difficulties. The consequences of disclosing data are in many cases not transparent or understandable, and the downstream markets of personal data make this even more problematic. People are not intrinsically capable of valuing abstract things – perhaps something to aid people in valuing personal data would be needed? Discussion of personal data is often framed in abstract terms like privacy – perhaps we are also lacking the terminology and concepts to approach the issue? MOTIVATING QUESTIONS Your contribution in the workshop could concern the following, or related, questions: - Is the value of personal data a relevant concept or a useful framework? What new framings or concepts could we employ to better make sense of the uses of personal data? - How can the consequences of personal data collection and use to our everyday lives be made transparent or understandable? - What tools could help people in assessing the value of data? What socio-technical solutions could be developed and employed? - What rights do people have over their personal data? How could the politics of data enhance or endanger individual freedoms? - What alternatives to the current notice & choice paradigm can be developed? What are the problems these alternatives aim to solve and how? - How to approach the complexities of personal data vs. aggregated data, and personal data vs. social consequences? - How to make personal data value exchanges understandable to people who participate in these exchanges? PRACTICALITIES Important dates: Workshop on August 31st, abstract DL May 31st Other details: see http://mydata2016.org/call-for-abstracts/ ------- Regards, Tuukka Lehtiniemi Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT tuukka.lehtiniemi(a)hiit.fi +358 50 328 2462

New Book: Digital Photography and Everyday Life: Empirical Studies on Material Visual Practices
by Edgar Gómez Cruz 25 May '16

25 May '16

Our new edited collection is out: Digital Photography and Everyday Life: Empirical Studies on Material Visual Practices <https://www.routledge.com/Digital-Photography-and-Everyday-Life-Empirical-S…> (Routledge Studies in European Communication Research and Education) Edited by Edgar Gómez Cruz and Asko Lehmuskallio With contributors from ten different countries and backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines - including anthropology, media studies and visual culture - this collection takes a uniquely broad perspective on photography by situating the image-making process in wider discussions on the materiality and visuality of photographic practices and explores these through empirical case studies. By focusing on material visual practices, the book presents a comprehensive overview of some of the main challenges digital photography is bringing to everyday life. It explores how the digitization of photography has a wide-reaching impact on the use of the medium, as well as on the kinds of images that can be produced and the ways in which camera technology is developed. The exploration goes beyond mere images to think about cameras, mediations and technologies as key elements in the development of visual digital cultures. Digital Photography and Everyday Life will be of great interest to students and scholars of Photography, Contemporary Art, Visual Culture and Media Studies, as well as those studying Communication, Cultural Anthropology, and Science and Technology Studies. Reviews "This is an outstanding collection of essays which invites a radical rethinking of photography. Each chapter dismantles conventional understandings of photography by examining in detail a specific assemblage of social practice, camera technology and light-generated image. What photography is, what it does and what it might do is thus rendered radically open, and photography is once more made as remarkable, emergent and diverse as it was a century and a half ago. Essential reading for anyone interested in photography and visual culture." Gillian Rose, Professor of Cultural Geography, The Open University, and Author of Visual Methodologies "This exciting and multifaceted book casts new light on the practice of photography. Highlighting the various processes of communication, networking and human-nonhuman relationality in different parts of the world, it shows the photographic medium as literally teeming with life. This is a must-read not just for scholars and students of photography but for anyone who reads the news, uses social media, moves from place to place or owns a camera phone!" Joanna Zylinska, Professor of New Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Curator of Photomediations Machine About the Authors Edgar Gómez Cruz is a Vice-Chancellor Research Fellow at RMIT, Melbourne. He has published widely on a number of topics relating to digital culture, ethnography, and photography. His recent publications include the book From Kodak Culture to Networked Image: An Ethnography of Digital Photography Practices (2012). Current research investigates screen cultures and citizenship, which is funded through RCUK and Vice Chancellor research grants. Asko Lehmuskallio is Chair of the ECREA TWG Visual Culture and founding member of the Nordic Network for Digital Visuality. As researcher at Universities of Tampere and Siegen, he specialises in visual culture, mediated human action and networked cameras. Recent books include Pictorial Practices in a "Cam Era": Studying non-professional camera use (2012) and #snapshot: Cameras amongst us (co-ed, 2014).

Hi All, There are still a couple of seats in my summer PhD course at University of Vienna. Dates: June 28-July 2, 2016 Title: Qualitative methods: Flexible methods and adaptive stances for studying complexity in the digital era. Professor: Annette Markham Basically, this is a (somewhat) introductory and intensive 5-day qualitative methods course, targeted toward contemporary digital contexts but certainly suitable for anyone using qualitative methods. It is sponsored by the University of Vienna's Department of Communication. The focus is interpretive, with emphasis on ethics, complexity, and creative (re)mixed methods approaches to studying social contexts in the 21st Century. Course combines some lecture with plenty of discussion and exercises. Workshop format means participants won't work on their own projects, but focus on building their toolkit for strong qualitative inquiry.
