Events are happening all over the world including NYC. The purpose of GAAD is to get people talking, thinking and learning about digital (web, software, mobile, etc.) accessibility and users with different disabilities. The target audience of GAAD is the design, development, usability, and related communities who build, shape, fund and influence technology and its use. While people may be interested in the topic of making technology accessible and usable by persons with disabilities, the reality is that they often do not know how or where to start. Communication and Technology book
by James Danowski 19 May '16

19 May '16

Dear Readers, The new book,* Communication and Technology*, Lorenzo Cantoni and James Danowski (eds.), published by De Gruyter Mouton, Berlin is the latest volume (#5) in the* Handbooks of Communication Science* series. *Communication and Technology* contains 30 chapters that review relevant literature, analyze major theoretical, methodological, and practical issues, and suggest directions for future research. We thought you might like to take a quick look at the Table of Contents and first chapter which overviews and analyzes the entire book including use of semantic network analysis of the content: http://bit.ly/1WE8oEn We didn’t realize this book would be so expensive and have this suggestion for you. If you are a faculty member, to access the entire book *Communication and Technology’*s 30 chapters for free, ask your librarian to buy it. If you are a student, ask a faculty member to make the library request. On the other hand, if money is not an issue, you could purchase *Communication and Technology* through Amazon: http://amzn.to/1NHbTa5 <http://amzn.to/1NHbTa5> Thank you, Jim James A. New book: Post, Mine, Repeat: social media data mining becomes ordinary by Helen Kennedy
by Helen Kennedy 19 May '16

19 May '16

My expensive new book, *Post, Mine, Repeat:* *social media data mining becomes ordinary,* is out with Palgrave Macmillan: http://www.palgrave.com/de/book/9781137353979 (eBook 16th May, hardback 30th May). Blurb, table of contents, endorsements & discount code below. *BLURB* In *Post, Mine, Repeat: **social media data mining becomes ordinary*, Helen Kennedy argues that as social media data mining becomes more and more ordinary, as we post, mine and repeat, new data relations emerge. These new data relations are characterised by a widespread desire for numbers and its troubling consequences, but also by the possibility of doing good with data and resisting data power, by new and old concerns, and by instability and contradiction. Drawing on action research with public sector organisations, interviews with commercial social insights companies and their clients, focus groups with social media users and other research, Kennedy provides a fascinating and detailed account of living with social media data mining inside the organisations that make up the fabric of everyday life. *TABLE OF CONTENTS* - Chapter 1: Social media data mining becomes ordinary - Chapter 2: Why study social media data mining? - Chapter 3: What should concern us about social media data mining? Key debates - Chapter 4: Public sector experiments with social media data mining - Chapter 5: Commercial mediations of social media data - Chapter 6: What happens to mined social media data? - Chapter 7: Fair game? User evaluations of social media data mining - Chapter 8: Doing good with data: alternative practices, elephants in rooms - Chapter 9: New data relations and the desire for numbers *ENDORSEMENTS* *‘Post, Mine, Repeat* is a genuinely ground-breaking and original piece of work, in which Helen Kennedy shares a range of important and revealing empirical insights into the practices of data mining. To my knowledge, no-one before has managed to produce such detailed research into data mining. The book shows how data mining fits into commercial monitoring, into organisations, into activism and into public sector services, how these are changing, and exactly what part data mining plays in empowerment and resistance, as well as surveillance and control. It is accessible, yet it tells some complex stories. This really is a tremendous, agenda-setting piece of work.' *Dr David Beer, University of York* 'Helen Kennedy has written an enlightening, informative and utterly convincing book. The focus of *Post, Mine, Repeat* on "ordinary" uses of data mining is a hugely welcome and much-needed contribution to debates about the role of big data in society. I’m so glad that Kennedy’s sane, measured, thoughtful, careful, eloquent, ethical voice is there in these debates, for me to cite, recommend and go back to for guidance whenever I get into arguments on the vitally important topics she covers.' *Professor David Hesmondhalgh, University of Leeds* 'This is a much-needed study on the importance of data mining to workers in ordinary organisations and more generally in society. What sets this book apart from other academic studies is its empirical focus: through interviews with users, professional data miners and key agents in organisations, Helen Kennedy tackles the larger issues involved in data mining and renders them concrete. The book is clearly focused and persuasively argued, a must-read for anyone who wants to understand what happens next in the world of Big Data.' *Professor José van Dijck, University of Amsterdam* *DISCOUNT CODE* 30% discount with code PM16THIRTY for orders placed by individuals, directly with Palgrave Macmillan, up to 30th June. -- Professor Helen Kennedy Department of Sociological Studies / Faculty of Social Sciences Elmfield, Northumberland Road Sheffield S10 2TU T: 0114 2226488 E: h.kennedy(a)sheffield.ac.uk

CfP: Ting – Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation (PDC2016 Workshop)
by Jaz Choi 18 May '16

18 May '16

Call for papers Ting: Making publics through provocation, conflict and appropriation A workshop at The Participatory Design Conference (PDC) in Aarhus 2016, August 15. http://www.performingthecommon.se/ting/ Because of the importance of the role and embodiment of the designer/artist in making publics, this workshop calls attention to self-reflective practices in participatory design, and questions how these self-reflective practices can be embedded in the functionality of new publics and design practices. More specifically, the workshop aims to explore the following questions: How do the designer/artist create and maintain publics? How do we accommodate differences in these agonistic spaces? What is the role of the designer/artist in these contexts? How can we understand the tension between artistic control in speculative design and empowerment in participatory design? We invite researchers, designers, activists, artists, who in their work are exploring utopian, speculative, and critical design projects as well as designing for and with social movements, alternative societies and relational economies. The specific themes and topics we are interested to revisit and discuss in this workshop are: • Agonistic public spaces versus consensual decision-making • Role of the author/designer/creator/artist in speculative and critical design in relation to participatory design • Exclusion and inclusion in the design practice • Norms in speculative participatory design practices • Institutional conditions for the development and growth of speculative and critical design within a participatory design practice Workshop Participation and Key Dates Participants will be selected to participate in the workshop based on their submitted position-papers. The submission should be between 1,000 to 2,000 words long, and include an image or illustration of a design work or design process. Submission should follow the ACM ICPS format (http://pdc2016.org/formatting-guidelines/) • Position paper deadline: June 13, 2016 • Author Notification: June 20, 2016 Extended papers will be considered for a special issue in Design Issues. by Klaus Bruhn Jensen 17 May '16

17 May '16

Three PhD scholarships in internet research The Department of Media, Cognition, and Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for three 3-year PhD scholarships. The successful candidates will be affiliated with the Peoples’ Internet (PIN) project sponsored by the Carlsberg Foundation. The candidates are expected to begin October 1, 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter. Description of the project “The Peoples’ Internet – Market, state, and civil society in China, Europe, and the United States” will undertake a comparative study of the internet in different world regions. Digital networks are among the most flexible and universally applicable technologies ever invented by humans. But the many significant variations in the social uses of the internet around the world remain poorly understood. The PIN project compares the current state and future potential of the internet in three centers of the global economy and world politics – China, Europe, and the United States – focusing on the interplay of civil society with the other two key sectors of modern societies: market and state. The PhD candidates will be an integral part of the PIN research group. They will participate both in formal project events and in informal deliberations throughout their affiliation with the project; they will have the opportunity both to pursue personal research interests and to contribute to the overall theoretical and methodological framework of PIN; and they will join a wider interdisciplinary research environment centered in the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Communication and Computing and its research group on Digital Communication and Aesthetics. In addition to coursework and other institutional obligations, the PhD candidates will undertake the following main activities: • six months of ethnographic fieldwork (China, Denmark, or the US) • review of regulatory regimes and cultural traditions in their fieldwork area • participation in analyses of population surveys • contributions to the dissemination of project findings and other outreach. PhD position # 1: The successful PhD candidate must be fluent in spoken and written academic English, and in Mandarin. Prior experience with cross-cultural studies and/or survey research within media and communication studies will be considered an advantage, but is not a requirement.
