digital methods/data activism summer school (University of Amsterdam)
by Stefania Milan 11 May '16

11 May '16

Curious about data activism, the politics of data, data infrastructure, data ethics? We have still limited availability for the Digital Methods Summer School at the University of Amsterdam (27 June - 8 July 2016)! This year's theme is "Only Connect? A Critical Appraisal of Connecting Practices in the Age of Social Media". The first week is devoted to explore "connective action", with a keynote by Lance Bennett (University of Washington).. and more. The second week is entirely dedicated to *data activism*, and is organized by the DATACTIVE research collective/project (data-activism.net) For more info, and how to apply, see https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/SummerSchool2016 <https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/SummerSchool2016> (under 'Application'). The extended deadline is *May 24, 2016*. --- **Call for participation** The second week of the Summer School is dedicated to the study of 'data activism'. *What is data activism?* With the diffusion of big data, citizens become increasingly aware of the critical role of information in modern societies. Today’s world is awash with data. Never before have we created such a quantity of data by and about people, things, and their interactions. While this data has captured the imagination of governments and corporations alike, people are also increasingly responding to this new technological landscape. From open data initiatives to privacy enhancing technologies, a growing number of people are developing new tools and practices in response to massive data collection and availability. People take advantage of the possibilities of data for civic engagement, advocacy, and campaigning (pro-active data activism). At the same time, people resist its harms through the development and use of encryption and free and open source alternatives to centralised software and online services (re-active data activism). Data activism is a signal of a more general change in perspectives and attitudes towards massive data collection. For more see data-activism.net. *Experiments with methods* Data activism emerges at the intersection of the social and technological dimensions of human action. This raises the question: how are we to understand and study this phenomenon? We think that it is important to experiment with methods. We want to investigate how people make use of data and interact with the socio-technical infrastructures that enable their circulation. This is especially relevant, since these are often complex, proprietary and opaque. For this purpose, we want to test and refine research approaches that enable the study of technological practices and infrastructures. This can involve configurations of digital methods and ethnographically informed traditions bridging media studies, science and technology studies (STS), informatics, and anthropology. * Can we develop an approach to 'software ethnography’, which traces and explores assemblages of data, infrastructures, technology designers and technology users? * How can we learn how (big) data infrastructures actually function and are used in practice? * Technology is always changing. How can we trace changes to the socio-technical infrastructures of tools over time? * How can new software tools help us understand the workings of different kinds of data infrastructures? Can we develop tools to reverse-engineer algorithms, analytic techniques, or surveillance infrastructures? *Format* Participants will work 4 days in self-organised groups on a project to explore these questions, together with several invited subject matter experts. *Output* Outputs can include short research reports (wiki’s) describing process and results, tool prototypes, or creative interventions. 2016 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture: Leopoldina Fortunati
by Sarina Chen 11 May '16

11 May '16

The 2016 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture features Leopoldina Fortunati (University of Udine, Italy), at 12 pm, on June 14, 2016, in Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk, International Communication Association’s 66th Annual Conference, in Fukuoka, Japan. The title of Fortunati’s lecture is “Feminism, labor and the mechanization of everyday life.” In the lecture, Fortunati will adopt a political economy approach to examine the issue of machines diffusion in everyday life, which connects machines with labor, value production and struggles/resistance, especially by women, against the present organization and division of labor. Fortunati will address the social and political role of machines in society, as well as social robots, which can be considered in many ways the next new media. Some social robots built in recent years in many laboratories are ready to be launched on the market and more generally placed in society. But the conceptual tools to handle this last mile to go still need to be fully developed. When an object of such technological complexity and with such rhetorical power, like robots are, is no longer used only by niches of innovators or users (such as autistic) but is proposed as a good of mass consumption, a series of problems, new themes and strategies comes into the spotlight. This event is co-sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) University of Illinois, Chicago, and the International Communication Association. For more information about this event, please contact Shing-Ling Sarina Chen, sarina.chen(a)uni.edu.

Reminder: Travel Scholarships
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 11 May '16

11 May '16

Hi everyone, Just a reminder that AoIR has travel scholarships available to help support travel to Berlin. The full announcement is on the AoIR website, under Awards - Travel Scholarships, and I'm posted the call here as well. Give a shout if you have questions. ~Jenny President, AoIR ++++++++++++++++++++ In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers makes available several conference fee waivers and travel stipends per year. Applications are invited from authors whose proposals have already been accepted via the conference reviewing process, as well as by PhD Students applying to the Doctoral Colloquium. All applications should be emailed directly to the President of AoIR (Jenny Stromer-Galley, prez at aoir.org) and must be received by June 15, 2015. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: * A brief description of how the author's presentation or contribution to the IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the conference. * An explanation of the author's distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver, and an indication that the applicant will be able to make effective use of the funds. These may include, but are by no means limited to: exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one's own work. * A short (2-page) CV with your application. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her/his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers and travel stipends of up to $500 (with one stipend of up to $2,000) will be awarded (to be paid out after the conference) on the basis of the Executive Committee's collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there may be more meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless, we hope that awarded fee waivers and travel stipends will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also enrich the IR 16.0 conference for all attendees.
