Vasari Centre/BIMI Digital Animation Series Sebastian Buerkner: Screening and Discussion 17 June, 2016 6-9pm, Birkbeck Cinema The Vasari Research Centre for Art and Technology and the Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image (BIMI) present the first in a series of events, curated by Joel McKim and Esther Leslie, exploring multiple dimensions of digital animation. We are very pleased to host the London-based German artist Sebastian Buerkner who will be screening, for the first time in London, his award winning 3D stereoscopic film The Chimera of M along with a selection of other short animated films. Buerkner's work pushes digital animation into new aesthetic territory, bringing together the narrative and visual traditions of cinema, painting and sculpture in highly original forms. His innovative stereoscopic works explore the otherwise unrealized potential of 3D cinematic technology. The film screening will be followed by a discussion between Sebastian Buerkner and Joel McKim. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/vasari-centrebimi-digital-animation-series-t… Sebastian Buerkner (born in Berlin, Germany) lives and works in London. He completed an MA at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2002 and was awarded their Fellowship Residency in 2003. From 2004, his art practice has shifted primarily to animation. Recent solo shows include Kunsthaus im KunstkulturQuartier Nuremberg, Germany; Tramway, Glasgow; Sketch, London; The Showroom Gallery, London; Whitechapel Project Space; London and LUX at Lounge Gallery, London; Art on the Underground, Screen at Canary Wharf, London. Re: [Air-L] Free access - JCAL special issue on "Learning analytics in massively multi-user virtual environments and courses"
by Lee, Mark 04 May '16

I have received a few emails in response to my last message, asking for instructions on how to use the access code. Apologies for neglecting to include this information in the original message; I hadn’t tried using the access code myself and so didn’t realize the process wasn’t intuitive! I also wanted to take this opportunity to clarify that the access code will provide free access to ALL JCAL articles—not just those in the special issue—for the remainder of the year. 1. You will need to register for an account on the Wiley website at http://www.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/user-registration if you have not already done so. 2. Log in to Wiley Online Library (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com) with your email and password. 3. Once you have logged in, go to the trial access page within your profile at http://www.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/myprofile/trials. Enter the access code JCALLAK16 in the "Trial Access Code" dialog box, then click "Submit Code." You should now have access to all JCAL content (not just the special issue). If you encounter any difficulty, please email jcal.specialissues(a)gmail.com and I will endeavor to assist you. Kind regards, Mark > On May 4, 2016, at 1:06 PM, Mark J. W. CFP Extended: Union for Democratic Communications 2016 Conference (Detroit. Sep. 29-Oct. 1, 2016)
by Doug Tewksbury 04 May '16

04 May '16

CFP: The Union for Democratic Communications 2016 Conference Troubled Waters: Structural Inequalities, Structural Responses Location: Wayne State University. Detroit, MI. Date: September 29 – October 1, 2016 Deadline to submit extended to: May 20, 2016 Paper Submission: http://www.democraticcommunications.org Call for Papers: As global inequality reaches staggering levels and capitalism becomes increasingly unstable, people of color increasingly face disproportionate impacts of environmental degradation, pauperization, and state repression. Media and communications systems play an important role in enabling and resisting such phenomena across the globe, from Europe’s refugee crisis, to police violence in the U.S., to the illegal occupation of Palestine, to the displacement of people across the Global South due to climate change. The global phenomenon of racialized inequality has poignantly played out in Detroit, the site of this year’s conference. The city, once a symbol of the United States’ industrial dominance, has been reconstructed over the last 40 years as one of decay in the popular imaginary. From lead-tainted drinking water to crumbling schools, southeastern Michigan has felt the suffering that stems from the failures of the corporate state and institutionalized racism. Unfortunately, Detroit’s experience is not unique, but rather must be seen as part of a broader war on the working-class and people of color under neoliberalism, facilitated by utopian myths around digital technology and the post-industrial economy. Though these problems are the result of varied historical and deep-seated racial and social injustices, their continued existence is not a foregone conclusion. This UDC conference will draw attention to the relationship between neoliberal culture and ideology and institutional racism, both domestically and internationally. Specifically, the conference organizers encourage submissions that examine how systematic, institutionalized racism shapes our physical, social, cultural, ecological, and mediated environments; we also encourage submissions that identify promising avenues of institutional and social transformation. We invite abstract submissions to this year’s conference from new, emerging and established scholars; graduate students; artists; activists; and media practitioners. We welcome proposals for paper presentations, workshops, theme panels, film screenings, artistic interventions, and other formats. Abstracts should be between 300-500 words. Graduate students who want to be considered for the Brian Murphy Student Paper Award should submit a full paper along with their abstract. All submissions are subject to double-blind review and can be submitted at www.democraticcommunications.org -- Any questions? Call for Volunteers: AoIR Technical Advisory Group
by Axel Bruns 04 May '16

04 May '16

AoIR is now calling for expressions of interest from volunteers to serve on our Technical Advisory Group (TAG). From time to time, the Association faces various issues relating to our technical infrastructure - including the AoIR Website, the Selected Papers in Internet Research (SPIR) site, our conference submission and registration platforms, our mailing-list, and the integration between these different systems. Members of the TAG will be asked to help us make better strategic decisions about our technology choices, and to support the Association Coordinator and Exec in addressing any urgent issues - for example to clean up and better protect our sites after the hacking attacks we suffer on occasion. TAG members should have strong familiarity with technologies such as PHP, MySQL, Open Journal Systems, Wordpress, and/or ConfTool, as well as overall server admin skills. Experience in protecting Web servers from hackers would also be very welcome. AoIR is an almost entirely volunteer-based, non-profit organisation, so unfortunately we can't offer any payment for this work - other than the satisfaction of having made a significant contribution to our community. If you're interested in helping out, please email Axel Bruns (vp(a)aoir.org) with an expression of interest and some information about your tech skills and expertise. The first major point of focus for the TAG will be our conference publication, Selected Papers in Internet Research (SPIR). As you may have noticed, SPIR is currently offline; unfortunately, the site has been hacked, and we are hoping that with the help of TAG volunteers we'll be able to bring it back online as soon as possible. In the longer term, we hope to transition SPIR to a more secure, hosted setup. On behalf of the AoIR Exec, many thanks in advance. -- Dr Axel Bruns a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au - @snurb_dot_info ARC Future Fellow, 2014-17 http://www.amazon.com/author/axel.bruns/ Professor, Media & Communication http://mappingonlinepublics.net/ QUT Digital Media Research Centre http://qut.edu.au/research/dmrc/ Creative Industries Faculty, Z6-503, KG http://snurb.info/ Queensland University of Technology +61 7 3138 5548 GPO Box 2434, Brisbane, Qld 4001, Australia CRICOS No.: 00213J
