Book announcement: Discursive self in microblogging
by Daria Dayter 02 May '16

02 May '16

Dear AoIRists, please forgive the self-promotion! My new book "Discursive self in microblogging: Speech acts, stories and self-praise" has just been published by Benjamins. It might be interesting to those of you who research the issues of identity formation online and/or teach classes on linguistics of CMC. The book is now available for review on The Linguist List: http://linguistlist.org/issues/27/27-1999.html Short description: This volume examines the language of microblogs drawing on the example of a group of eleven users who are united by their interest in ballet as a physical activity and an art form. The book reports on a three and a half year study which complemented a 20,000 word corpus of tweets with semi-structured interviews and participant observation. It deals with two main questions: how users exploit the linguistic resources at their disposal to build a certain identity, and how the community boundaries are performed discursively. The focus is on the speech acts of self-praise and complaint, and on the storytelling practices of microbloggers. The comprehensive treatment of the speech act theory and the social psychological approaches to self-disclosure provides a stepping stone to the analysis of identity work, for which the users draw on two distinctive interpretive repertoires – affiliative and self-promoting. Further information about the book can be found on the publisher's website: https://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/pbns.260 -- Dr. Daria Dayter Department of English - University of Basel Postdoctoral Assistant Nadelberg 6, room 15 CH-4051 Basel / Switzerland Tel: 0041 - 61 - 2 67 27 82 Email: daria.dayter(a)unibas.ch https://engsem.unibas.ch/department/people/staff/profile/profile/person/day…

Call for Papers E-Book on HHRR & Technology
by Mariateresa Garrido Villareal 02 May '16

02 May '16

Dear all, I want to share the call for papers for the E-Book: "Human Rights and Technology. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” that will be published by the UN mandated University for Peace to celebrate the International Human Rights Day (Dec. 10). If you have any doubts or questions, please do not hesitate in contact me. Mariateresa Garrido PHD Candidate University for Peace - Department of International Law www.upeace.org<http://www.upeace.org/> Call for papers: “Human Rights and Technology. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” Technology in the 21st Century has the potential to positively contribute to the promotion of tolerance and peaceful coexistence among all human beings, to the protection of human rights, and to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The United Nations mandated University for Peace (UPEACE), established as a Treaty Organization with its own Charter<https://www.upeace.org/pdf/charter.pdf> in an International Agreement<https://www.upeace.org/pdf/agreement.pdf> adopted by the General Assembly in resolution 35/55<https://www.upeace.org/pdf/resolution.pdf> of 5 December 1980, has the mission: "to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace and with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations". At UPEACE, we believe that peace, sustainable development and human rights are all inter-connected and inter-dependent, and that technology can play a major part in promoting all these objectives in a holistic manner. For that reason, UPEACE has decided to publish an e-book that examines how the uses of current technologies, and the development of new ones, can contribute to guarantee and protect human rights within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/post2015/transformingourworld/publica…> framework. Hence, considering that every Sustainable Development Goal aims to protect one or more human rights, and that states will rely on the use of technological innovations and global interconnectedness to implement the 2030 Agenda, we are looking for articles that explore one or more of the following topics: 1. The role of technology in promoting a culture of peace in the 2030 Agenda. Examples of research questions: a. To which extend technology can be used as a tool to guarantee human rights? b. How technology contributes to the development of transparent and accountable institutions? c. Can stakeholders benefit from the use of technology in promoting and respecting human rights? 2. The achievement of gender equality (SDG #5) through the use of technology. Examples of research questions: a. How programs designed to reduce the impact of the digital divide can promote gender equality? b. What can be done to include girls and women in educational programs that encourage them to participate in economic activities related to the development of technologies? c. Can technology be used to empower women and include them in decision-making processes? 3. Technology as a tool to overcome discrimination in the 2030 Agenda. Examples of research questions: a. How technology can be used to overcome discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, or any other type of discrimination? b. Which type of policies can be designed to use technology as a form to reduce discrimination? c. How can technology contribute with the inclusion of children, youth, persons with physical impairments, indigenous peoples, refugee and internally displaced people, LGBTI, and any other vulnerable community? 4. The role of technology in achieving economic, cultural and social rights in the 2030 Agenda. Examples of research questions: a. How technology contributes to ensure healthy lives and to promote well-being? b. To which extend can technology improve environmental conditions? c. Can smart cities be sustainable while promoting economic development? 5. The role of technology in achieving civil and political rights in the 2030 Agenda. Examples of research questions: a. How e-government increases political participation and the inclusion of minorities? b. Which are the new challenges for the exercise and protection of the right to freedom of expression? c. Can judiciary benefit from the use of new technology? 6. The role of the private sector in the promotion and protection of human rights and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Examples of research questions: a. Which is the role of technology developers, service providers, and intermediaries in the promotion and protection of human rights? b. Which is the role of technology in the implementation and monitoring of the SDGs and protection of human rights? c. Can human rights serve as an ethical framework for technology developers and the ICT sector? Submission Abstract can be presented in English and Spanish, it should not exceed 300 words and it must follow this format: - Times New Roman 10, single-spaced. - Title, headings and subheadings in bold print. - Author(s) Name. - Author(s) institutional affiliation. - Author(s) e-mail(s). - 5 Key words - Biographical note: please include a short bio note for each author at the end of the abstract. CFP: Studying Politics across Platforms

Apologies for cross-posting. Please see below for a call for papers for an upcoming issue of Political Communication, guest edited by me and Emily K. Vraga. This call should be of interest to many doing work in this area! Best, ~Leticia *Call for papers* *Symposium in Political Communication* *Studying Politics Across Media* Guest editors: Leticia Bode (Georgetown University) Emily K Vraga (George Mason University) The work in political communication with an emphasis on digital technologies, new media, and social media is growing rapidly. However, the majority of this research is narrowly construed, typically focusing on a single medium or platform at a time. Though this tendency has been criticized, it shows little sign of disappearing. With this special issue, we hope to jumpstart the field of Political Communication to focus on the broader media environment and interactions between the use of multiple media platforms. Theoretically, such an effort addresses important questions in political communication. What are differences in the framing and effects of political events across platforms? Do news and political stories spread the same way, to the same people, in different places? What role do the audience and the affordance of a medium play in this process? In short - how does political communication happen in the complicated modern media environment? We see this manifesting in myriad ways. Scholars could approach this theoretically, adapting a theory from one medium or platform to test its utility across other media spaces, or comparing multiple platforms in terms of audiences, structure, affordances, uses, or other attributes. Empirical work could consider the influence of individuals’ use of several media spaces on outcomes such as knowledge, information seeking, or participation, or on candidates’ or campaigns’ use of diverse platforms to target and persuade mass audiences. Work with an international focus is strongly encouraged. This topic is of utmost importance, given the growing role that digital, mobile, and social media platforms are playing in political communication, and the parallel growing scholarly attention to this area. *Timeline* May, 2016: Call for papers published October 1, 2016: Deadline for full paper submissions. Use the online submission system and follow the journal’s submission guidelines ( http://www.tandfonline.com/action/authorSubmission?journalCode=upcp20&page=…)

Hi everyone, Thought this might be of interest to some on the AIR-L, especially those of you working on (or have students working on) media history. Details below. Thanks for looking, David Media Archaeology summer school University of Pisa July 4-8 350 € (300 € for registration by May 2) Includes course materials, lunches, and coffee breaks Program description: Rather than a discipline, Media Archaeology may be seen as a perspective which addresses different practices and methodological approaches. Media culture – including the culture of the so-called “new media” – is investigated as a product of stratification of different social and historical processes. The aim of the Summer school is double: on one hand to draw a map of contemporary Media Archaeology; on the other hand, to discuss about open fields of research from the perspective of Media Archaeology. The course will be held by European and North American experts from different disciplines who will illustrate the complexity and potentialities of this perspective. Faculty staff includes: James Hay (University of Illinois, Vincenzo Mele (University of Pisa), David Parisi (College of Charleston), Jeremy Packer (University of Toronto), Jussi Parikka (University of Southampton), Wanda Strauven (University of Amsterdam).
