CFS: The Torist, an Onionland Literary Journal
by Robert W. Gehl 22 Apr '16

22 Apr '16

On behalf of GMH, founder of the Torist, I'm pleased to send out this call for submissions for issue 2 of The Torist, an Onionland Literary Journal: In January 2016, we released the first issue of the first literary magazine hosted inside the Tor anonymity network. We knew this project would cater to a niche audience. In fact, that was precisely the point: to create an artistic outlet for the growing communities of people interested in topics such as cryptography and anonymity, and to help these technologies realize their positive potential. Nonetheless, we were taken aback by the breadth of its success. Major media outlets including Motherboard, Lit Hub, Deutschland Radio, and the Atlantic ran pieces on The Torist's inaugural issue. William Gibson, author of Neuromancer, even retweeted an article about us—a cyberpunk's dream come true. Buoyed by the surprise popularity of The Torist Issue 1, we're excited to release this call for fiction, poetry, non-fiction and visual art for our second issue. ====What to Submit Prose submissions should not exceed 4000 words, though there can be a degree of flexibility, for instance if your work is exceptional or is suitable to be excerpted. Prose submissions may encompass fiction, non-fiction, and reviews. Non-fiction could include a broad range of material, for instance journalism, essays and op-eds. Please note we do not provide academic peer review. With works of fiction, we are less concerned about genre and more about whether the work strikes us as insightful, exciting, forward-thinking, and enjoyable. Reviews could deal with (but need not be limited to): books or other publications films music technologies websites (especially in the deep web) events (technology conferences, art exhibitions) Poems should not exceed five pages in length, though there may be exceptions made for outstanding work. Visual artwork will be used on the cover and for illustrations throughout the issue. Submissions can encompass most formats which can be sent electronically including photography, graphic design, and photographs of physical works such as paintings, drawings, and sculptures. We would also be interested in sequential art such as comics. Your work doesn't have to address themes such as cryptography, anonymity or surveillance, though that, too, is welcome. The purpose of The Torist is to engage with communities of people interested in those topics and encourage their creativity to grow. The themes those communities address can arise organically. ====How to Submit We have two main ways of submitting: by email at torist(a)riseup.net or through our GlobaLeaks submissions site toristfgqiroaded.onion. If you use PGP email encryption, please make use of our public key. We accept most file types. If we are unable to open a file, we will contact you if possible and ask for an alternative. Please only use PDFs if it is necessary to preserve special formatting; in particular, PDFs can make it more difficult to edit extended prose. For written work, it is fine either to attach the file or to put it in the body of the email. You may publish under any name you wish, but please avoid offensive ones. If you do not provide us with a name, we will simply publish you as Anonymous. If you have a preference please let us know by putting it in the document containing your work, in an email, or in the “Full description” box in the GlobaLeaks submissions form. Providing a name is completely optional. ====Key Dates For inclusion in Issue 2, we require submissions by August 1, 2016. We intend to produce Issue 2 by December 2016. ====Find Us Online Our Tor blog: toristinkirir4xj.onion Our GlobaLeaks submission site: toristfgqiroaded.onion Our Twitter account: https://twitter.com/thetorist Our Tumblr blog: thetorist.tumblr.com Our PGP key: https://pgp.mit.edu/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x2A37AFAC9449E214

CFP: Consuming Gender
by Megen De Bruin 22 Apr '16

22 Apr '16

Please find attached a CFP for a special journal edition of Assuming Gender (www.assuminggender.com<http://www.assuminggender.com>) – an online, peer-reviewed academic journal from Cardiff University. For this special edition, Assuming Gender invites articles that focus specifically on the idea of ‘Consuming Gender’. How has consumer culture constructed (and how has it been constructed by) gender through the ages? Proposals of roughly 500 words should be sent to Megen de Bruin-Molé, Akira Suwa and Daný van Dam at gender(a)cardiff.ac.uk<mailto:gender@cardiff.ac.uk> under the subject line ‘CFP Consuming Gender’, including your name, e-mail institutional affiliation (if any), and a biographical note (100 words maximum). We welcome papers from scholars of all backgrounds, disciplines, and career stages. The deadline for proposals is 16 October, 2016, and completed papers of 5000 to 8000 words will be expected no later than 16 April, 2017. If you could circulate this to any potentially interested parties, we would be much obliged. Kind regards, Megen de Bruin-Molé School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University John Percival Building, Rm. 1.07 Colum Drive Cardiff CF10 3EU UK Email: DeBruinMJ(a)cardiff.ac.uk<mailto:DeBruinMJ@cardiff.ac.uk> Social media: @MegenJM | facebook.com/megenj<http://facebook.com/megenj> Website: angelsandapes.com<http://angelsandapes.com> Call for Papers: ‘Consuming Gender’ This special issue of Assuming Gender – an online, peer-reviewed academic journal from Cardiff University – seeks to explore the way gender is both presented and consumed through popular media and advertising. As Ann Herrmann points out in the article ‘Shopping for Identities’, commodities ‘are characterised by their dual nature: material composition and symbolic meaning’ (Herrmann 2002: 539). Consumer culture plays a significant role in constructing valid (and normative) identity categories with which consumers are encouraged to identify. Scholars as diverse as Americus Reed, Laura C. Nelson, and Henry Jenkins have theorised the ways in which identity and consumer culture are intertwined. Reed, for example, claims in ‘Activating the Self-Importance of Consumer Selves’ that ‘[s]ocial identities are mental representations that can become a basic part of how consumers view themselves’ (Reed 2004: 286). In a later article on ‘Identity-Based Consumer Behaviour’, Reed and others use the example of athletics to illustrate their point: ‘if consumers view themselves as “athletes”, they are likely to behave in ways that are consistent with what it means to “be” an athlete’ (Reed, Forehand, Puntoni and Warlop 2002: 310). Consumption thus becomes defined by identity, and identity becomes defined by consumption. While the construction of identities based on athleticism seems relatively benign, the case quickly becomes more complicated when consumer identities are racially, economically, or sexually coded. In addition to delineating the borders between various interest groups, consumer culture plays a significant role in establishing and maintaining binary identity distinctions (male/female, gay/straight, black/white), undermining the validity of those identifying across or in-between one or more categories, or who refuse categorisation at all. Those identities not classified as valid consumer groups are not seen as valid identities at all. For this special issue of Assuming Gender, we invite articles that focus specifically on the idea of ‘Consuming Gender’. How has consumer culture constructed (and how has it been constructed by) gender through the ages? Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: • Consuming gender/gendered consumption • Historical contexts of gendered consumption • Feminist/postfeminist approaches to consumption • Consumption and intersectionality • Queer consumption • Media constructions of (gendered) consumer identities • Post/colonialism and gendered consumption Please send a proposal of roughly 500 words to Megen de Bruin-Molé, Akira Suwa and Daný van Dam at gender(a)cardiff.ac.uk<mailto:gender@cardiff.ac.uk> under the subject line ‘CFP Consuming Gender’, including your name, e-mail institutional affiliation (if any), and a biographical note (100 words maximum). We welcome papers from scholars of all backgrounds, disciplines, and career stages. The deadline for proposals is 16 October, 2016, and completed papers of 5000 to 8000 words will be expected no later than 16 April, 2017. Assuming Gender is an electronic journal dedicated to the timely analysis of constructions of gendered texts, practices, and subjectivities. This journal seeks to continue and shift debates on how gender is problematized in contemporary discourses as well as participate in the dialogue and tensions that maintain the urgency of such conversations. Prior issues can be viewed on www.assuminggender.com<http://www.assuminggender.com/>.

Re: [Air-L] IAMCR Pre-conference, 26-27 July 2016 at LSE: Children's and Young People's Rights in the Digital Age
by Livingstone,S 21 Apr '16

21 Apr '16

Apologies for cross-posting Children's and Young People's Rights in the Digital Age Registration is now open for our conference in July on children’s and young people’s rights in the digital age at LSE, a central London-based IAMCR pre-conference. Please register here: http://eshop.lse.ac.uk/browse/product.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=327 (Early bird fees run until 20 May). See http://iamcr.org/leicester2016/preconf/youth-digital-rights for the outline programme. The draft full programme will be available in early May. We see a growing momentum for recognition of the potential of online and networked media for promoting children’s rights. Yet, researchers, child rights’ advocates and internet governance experts are concerned that children’s rights are being newly infringed rather than enhanced in the digital age. This raises questions for research, policy and practice: * How is the digital environment impacting on children’s rights today? * What are the challenges to children’s rights presented by the digital? * How might we seize the opportunities for children’s online participation to promote children’s rights globally? We hope you will register and come to join a lively discussion. Note that the conference is co-hosted by Global Kids Online: www.globalkidsonline.net<http://www.globalkidsonline.net/>. It will finish in time for those who wish to get to Leicester for the opening of the IAMCR conference. All the very best, Sonia Livingstone, Amanda Third and Mariya Stoilova

Historicizing the Digital, University of Leicester
by Caroline.Tagg 21 Apr '16

21 Apr '16

With apologies for cross-postings, the deadline for abstract submissions to Historicising the Digital has been extended until 30th April. Historicizing the Digital: language practices in new and old media Mon 27th - Tues 28th June 2016 University of Leicester, UK CALL FOR PAPERS: *new deadline 30th April 2016* REGISTRATION: opening soon Language and new media is a rapidly emerging area of applied linguistics which considers how the affordances of digital technologies promote new linguistic strategies for identity work by individuals and communities (Seargeant and Tagg 2013). Research suggests that language use in digital spaces is highly innovative (in forms, functions, ideologies and cultural norms), and especially so for written language, such as online spelling variation, code-switching, multimodality, and sharing (Georgakoupoulou and Spilioti 2015). Our seminar, 'Historicizing the Digital', provides a space in which researchers are encouraged to re-evaluate assumptions and claims of digital communication research. The event explores the extent to which digital practices really are "new". What precedents might be found in earlier periods? What practices show continuity between the pre- and post-digital age? What practices constitute genuine innovation within digital spaces? The event invites speakers working within different historical periods who may not otherwise join in conversation to promote fresh discussions from a trans-historical perspective. Proposals should be submitted to the Conference Organisers (histthedig(a)gmail.com) as a Word document, containing the following information: * Title of proposal in bold * Name of presenter * Name and address of institution, telephone and email * Abstract text max. 300 words * 12pt, left-aligned, single-spaced Please visit our website for more details: www.histthedig.blogspot.co.uk<https://mail.bham.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?REF=wO1TlPlwFPYBiM2oGJSHYAFzFUT4XtFo…>

Out now! - "Religion in Digital Games RESPAWNED" - Issue 10 (2016) of "online - Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet"
by Simone Heidbrink 21 Apr '16

21 Apr '16

Dear all, The new special issue 10 (2016) of "online - Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet" (edited by Simone Heidbrink and Tobias Knoll) is - once more - dedicated to "Religion in Digital Games RESPAWNED" <http://heiup.uni-heidelberg.de/journals/index.php/religions/issue/view/2354>. As the "gamers" among our readers will be very well aware of, "respawn" is a constant occurence in most videogames. However, while in-game it usually is rather annoying (especially when mobs respawn while the player is still out cold) this issue is the - very positive - result of some kind of "respawn", namely the submission of many great papers by highly innovative authors doing research in the field of digital games and gaming. Enjoy! If you would like to submit a paper for a future issue of Online – Heidelberg Journal of Religions on the Internet, feel free to send an abstract or full article to online.religion(a)zegk.uni-heidelberg.de. We will gladly consider the publication of further articles related to religion and video games as well as any other topic fitting the scope of the journal. For further information please see: http://heiup.uni-heidelberg.de/journals/index.php/religions/index. If you want to be kept up to date on things like new releases and call for papers, you can follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/onlinehjri/) or subscribe to our Newsletter by sending an e-mail (no subject) to the following address: listserv(a)listserv.uni-heidelberg.de. The text must be as follows (case sensitive): SUBSCRIBE irw-online-journal [first name] [last name] Please replace the content in the square brackets with your personal data. In the meantime, enjoy our new issue!
