Literary stuff for courses
by Barry Wellman 16 Apr '16

Amanda, et al I've read and used two of what you ask: EM Forster, "The Machine Stops" is great--and short. Wonderful antidote to SV hype. RUR is stilted, old--good for us to get a historical sense, but I don't think students would relate. I'd rather show "Ex Machina" Or read a chunk of Asimov's _The Naked Sun_ YMMV Barry Wellman A vision is just a vision if it's only in your head Step by step, link by link, putting it together Streisand/Sondheim _______________________________________________________________________ NetLab Network FRSC INSNA Founder http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman twitter: @barrywellman NETWORKED:The New Social Operating System Lee Rainie & Barry Wellman MIT Press http://amzn.to/zXZg39 Print $17 Kindle $11 _______________________________________________________________________

WEBCAST FRI/SAT: Theorizing the Web #TtW16
by Joly MacFie 15 Apr '16

15 Apr '16

This is underway. Not your regular policy/tech Internet Conference! I have volunteer operators running ISOC kit in rooms B and C. joly posted: "On Friday/Saturday April 15-16 2016 sixth annual Theorizing the Web conference will take place at the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC. Theorizing the Web is an inter- and non-disciplinary annual conference that brings together scholars, journalists, art" On *Friday/Saturday April 15-16 2016* sixth annual *Theorizing the Web* <http://theorizingtheweb.tumblr.com/2016/> conference will take place at the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC. Theorizing the Web is an inter- and non-disciplinary annual conference that brings together scholars, journalists, artists, activists, and technology practitioners to think conceptually and critically about the interrelationships between the Web and society. We deeply value public engagement, and consider insights from academics, non-academics, and non-“tech theorists” alike to be equally valuable. Both days of programming will feature invited speakers as well as presentations from competitively selected open-submission system. Selected papers advance clear theoretical arguments; represent a diverse range of perspectives; embrace accessibility by demystifying jargon rather than using it as a crutch; and, importantly, appeal to concerns of power, social (in)equality, and justice. The event comprises three afternoon tracks, plus plenary evening keynote sessions. Tracking a Tag on a Grad School Budget: Where and How can we do this?
by Jon Michael Wargo 15 Apr '16

15 Apr '16

Hello Fabulous Listserv, Just a quick question for the mind of the AIR-L hive. How can I track a tag in a way that is not costly (aka FREE) and breaks down analytics that would be helpful in a presentation to a generalist audience (e.g., # of unique users who used the tag, word cloud with other popular text, reach/scope of the #tag)? I've tried a number of suggested apps and tools on the social media tools page but as someone with limited proficiency with code I am having difficulty finding something that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Email me directly please. Thanks, Jon Jon M. Jennifer Haley's The Nether / VR vs RLd
by Jill Walker Rettberg 15 Apr '16

15 Apr '16

Have any of you watched or read Jennifer Haley’s play The Nether? It’s being played all over the world (Washington, Philadelphia, Munich and Bergen right now, LA, NYC and London a few months ago, no doubt elsewhere too) and is about the relationship between virtual worlds and RL, set in a near future where the world is horrible (no trees etc) and a lot of people spend most of their time in a VR world. I found a PDF of the manuscript here. It’s a fast read. http://www.playsandplayers.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/THE-NETHER-8.9.11… Reading reviews and the blurb I first thought it was going to be just another “virtual worlds are sick pornographic dens of pedophilia and nothing else) but that as I read the manuscript I found really quite fascinating. The NY Times review emphasises “the dark side of the web” and certainly the pedophilia thing is strongly emphasised in the marketing of the play. Reading the manuscript through to the end I don’t have that takeaway. (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/25/theater/review-jennifer-haleys-the-nether…) I’d love to hear what others think about it - it gets SO much more interesting towards the end but I’m a bit loathe to give spoilers. The reviews I’ve read all seem to fall into the “virtual is bad” trap, which is odd given the last third of the play. Of course, I haven’t yet seen it on stage. It’s premiering here in Bergen tomorrow and I’ve been invited to give a talk about VR at the theatre at noon tomorrow, and they gave me tickets to the dress rehearsal tonight - will be interesting to see how they slant it. Book Announcement: Learning in Virtual Worlds - Free Download
by Lee, Mark 14 Apr '16

14 Apr '16

Announcing the release of: LEARNING IN VIRTUAL WORLDS: RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS Edited by: Sue Gregory, University of New England, Australia, Mark J.W. Lee, Charles Sturt University, Australia, Barney Dalgarno, Charles Sturt University, Australia, and Belinda Tynan, The Open University, UK With a Foreword by Chris Dede, Harvard University, USA Part of the "Issues in Distance Education" series (Series Editor: Terry Anderson, Athabasca University, Canada) Published by Athabasca University Press as an open-access publication— Free PDF download available at: http://www.aupress.ca/index.php/books/120254 Also available for purchase in Paperback and ePub formats *** Description *** Three-dimensional (3D) immersive virtual worlds have been touted as being capable of facilitating highly interactive, engaging, multimodal learning experiences. Much of the evidence gathered to support these claims has been anecdotal but the potential that these environments hold to solve traditional problems in online and technology-mediated education—primarily learner isolation and student disengagement—has resulted in considerable investments in virtual world platforms like Second Life, OpenSimulator, and Open Wonderland by both professors and institutions. To justify this ongoing and sustained investment, institutions and proponents of simulated learning environments must assemble a robust body of evidence that illustrates the most effective use of this powerful learning tool. In this authoritative collection, a team of international experts outline the emerging trends and developments in the use of 3D virtual worlds for teaching and learning. They explore aspects of learner interaction with virtual worlds, such as user wayfinding in Second Life, communication modes and perceived presence, and accessibility issues for elderly or disabled learners. They also examine advanced technologies that hold potential for the enhancement of learner immersion and discuss best practices in the design and implementation of virtual world-based learning interventions and tasks. By evaluating and documenting different methods, approaches, and strategies, the contributors to Learning in Virtual Worlds offer important information and insight to both scholars and practitioners in the field. *** About the Editors *** - Sue Gregory, associate professor and chair of research in the School of Education at the University of New England, Australia, lectures in ICT education, conducts research on the use of virtual worlds for learning and teaching, and leads the Australia and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. - Mark J.W. Lee, adjunct senior lecturer with the School of Education at Charles Sturt University, Australia and honorary senior research fellow with the School of Science, Information Technology and Engineering at Federation University Australia, has broad interests in learning sciences and technology, with a current focus on creative and playful pedagogies that transcend multiple spaces, temporalities, and/or modalities. He was previously editor-in-chief of MERLOT's Journal of Online Learning and Teaching. - Barney Dalgarno, professor/co-director of the uImagine Digital Learning Innovation Laboratory at Charles Sturt University, Australia and co-lead editor of the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, has received national and international recognition for his innovative research, teaching, and learning design using leading-edge technologies. - Belinda Tynan, pro vice-chancellor (learning and teaching) at The Open University in the United Kingdom, has held management positions at higher education institutions in four countries across three continents and over the years has attracted considerable grant funding as well as been responsible for multiple, large-scale innovation projects. *** Contributors *** - Paul M. Final Call: Carl J. Couch Internet Student Research Award 2016
by Mark D. Johns 14 Apr '16

14 Apr '16

CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2016 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center issues an international call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies. According to basic symbolic interactionist premises, what we understand as self, identity, relationship, and cultural formations are constructed dialogically and interactively. While the works of George H. Mead, Georg Simmel, Erving Goffman and other leading symbolic interactionists have been integral to the study of social interaction, Carl Couch was among the first from this tradition to suggest the importance of engaging in the study of mediated interaction. It is critical that symbolic interactionists move boldly forward, beyond Couch's initial suggestion, to study what has become for many a dominant form of communication in their everyday life. Whether we research identities, emotion, memory, family, work, career, presentations of self, deception, love, loss or other areas, the impact of mediated communication is felt by those interacting within it. As internet-related media continue to influence our everyday interactions--not only with other people but also with technologies, devices, algorithms, platform parameters, and so forth--it becomes crucial for symbolic interactionists to attend to the role of these mediating factors in the interaction process. We encourage any paper that uses a symbolic interactionist approach in internet studies. We also encourage papers that explore the interface between deliberate social interaction and structured (or automated) interactions sponsored or enacted by various technological features, exploring not only how identities, relations, and social formations are negotiated through social interactions, but also how these interactions are mediated further through the use or capacities of various technologies. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of social interactions. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Camille Johnson-Yale, Lake Forest College, Illinois Lois Scheidt, Indiana University, Bloomington Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should be in English and not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top paper will receive Couch Award to be presented at the 2016 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) in Berlin, Germany. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US and the author will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 6-8, 2016 in Berlin. Candidates should send a copy of their paper electronically, along with information concerning the location and level of their studies, to Mark Johns at mjohns(a)luther.edu Application deadline is May 15, 2016. Notification of award will be sent by June 15. Those with questions or comments about Couch Award application, please contact: Mark D. Johns Communication Studies Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Phone: 563-387-1347 E-mail: mjohns(a)luther.edu
