Hi everyone, I am delighted to announce the upcoming publication of my first book, Social Media and Everyday Politics, coming out through Polity very soon. The book draws upon a lot of the research I have carried out over the last few years, including elements which have featured in various AoIR presentations -- thanks to the AoIR community for all the feedback and support for this work! While this is, clearly, a book about social media and politics, it’s not just about politicians and elections and Twitter and blogs – after all, there’s far more to both 'social media' and 'politics' than just those topics. ACM UMAP Workshop - HAAPIE 2016 - CALL FOR PAPERS The 1st International Workshop on Human Aspects in Adaptive and Personalized Interactive Environments, in conjunction with the 24th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2016) Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, 13-17 July 2016 Full details are available online: http://haapie.cs.ucy.ac.cy IMPORTANT DATES Submission: 7 May 2016 Notification: 1 June 2016 Camera-ready: 7 June 2016 MOTIVATION & GOALS State-of-the-art approaches in adaptation and personalization research consider user models that mostly maintain information regarding the "traditional" user characteristics (i.e., experience, knowledge, interests, context), and related contextual or technology aspects (i.e., displays, connectivity, processing power). While modeling these factors has shown significant improvements and benefits to the end-users in terms of usability and user experience, still the needs of today's epoch signify the further engagement into research that will produce more holistic human-centered practices. The vision is to bring more inclusively the "human-in-the-loop", considering intrinsic user characteristics and abilities, like perceptual, personality, visual, cognitive and emotional factors as expressed by the theories of individual differences. In addition, recent studies show the need of broadening the scope of diversity parameters to include characteristics such as motivation, self-actualization, and socio-cultural differences. The overarching goal of HAAPIE 2016 is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the areas of human aspects in adaptation and personalization, and aims to: - Explore state-of-the-art and new implicit and explicit methods and techniques of modeling a broad range of human factors of users and behaviors - both separately and in possible combinations (e.g., cognitive abilities and age; motivation and cultural differences); - Explore personalization techniques, computational intelligence algorithms, recommendation models, and real-time paradigms that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of user tasks and interventions; - Compare challenges and experience in different real world contexts and applications (e.g., decision support, learning, wellbeing, security), where a holistic view on human aspects is needed to provide a positive user experience; and - Identify theoretical and computational models for the design, development and evaluation of human aspects in adaptation and personalization. The added value will be to shape new human-centered adaptive interactive environments and personalized platforms that can contribute towards long-term viable solutions. All workshop papers must contain original, previously unpublished, research work adhering the two publication types: - Full research papers (8-10 pages), proposing new approaches, innovative methods and research findings. They should make substantial theoretical and empirical contributions to the research field. - Short research papers (4-6 pages), presenting work in progress, lessons learnt, positions, emerging or future research issues and directions on human aspect challenges in the area. Models of app user experience studies

Hi everybody, I have recently started a multi-stage research project related to child/family wellness apps. I wanted to know whether any of you know of app user experience studies that consist of providing users with apps (either specific ones or a range of choices) and assessing their experience with them? Right now, I'm just looking for different models for structuring this type of user study, so the studies can focus on apps of any kind--they don't need to relate to family wellness (but yay if they do!). Fellow AoIRists, We are now seeking applicants to one postdoctoral Research Associate position and one PhD scholarship sought associated with a major new research project in digital journalism at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. ABOUT THE POSTDOC POSITION We are seeking a Research Associate to work on our recently-awarded ARC Discovery Project titled Journalism beyond the Crisis: Emerging Forms, Practices, and Uses. Administered within the QUT Digital Media Research Centre, this international collaborative project is led by Professor Brian McNair, in partnership with Axel Bruns, Folker Hanusch, Tamara Witschge, Mark Deuze and Christoph Neuberger. The project will examine the evolution of journalism and fact-based content forms in the emerging globalised public sphere. It will employ interview, survey and social media analytics methods to assess the future of journalism 'beyond the crisis', and to consider the impacts of journalistic evolution on culture and politics. It will also impact on journalism education and training by providing greater understanding of current trends in journalistic production and usage. The successful applicant will be supervised by Prof. Brian McNair. Key responsibilities include: * Undertake high quality academic research in collaboration with other research staff and under the supervision of the lead Chief Investigator; * Provide regular written and verbal reports and undertake associated administrative functions, including some day-to-day operational management of the research project; * Prepare papers, articles and reports in a range of academic publications, including journals, monographs and conference proceedings; * Mentor casual Research Assistants to provide direction and advice in the completion of specific project tasks, including preparation of academic publications; * Prepare and present project findings, particularly for the project website and for local research seminars and events. Type of appointment This appointment will be offered on a fixed-term, full-time basis for two (2) years. Location: Kelvin Grove campus, Brisbane Selection Criteria 1. Completed PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent research experience. 2. Proven experience in one or more of the following: journalism studies, media studies or communication. 3. Proven ability and commitment to conduct high quality research and experience to undertake the project brief under flexible supervision. 4. Demonstrated high level written communication skills with a proven track record of preparing and publishing results in papers, articles and reports in a range of academic or industry publications, including journals, monographs or conference proceedings. 5. The PhD will (1) explore how data from wearable devices (e.g., movement, location and sleep quality) can predict other psychologically relevant traits (e.g., personality, mood); (2) aim to build a series of computational models that can accurately identify changes in an individual’s everyday behaviour; and (3) consider how, in conjunction with other physiological measures (e.g., heart rate), this data could predict more complex psychological states (e.g., depression). Such understanding could be of value in understanding and mitigating security threats from the leakage of personal data through mobile and wearable technology, as well as in monitoring the well-being of security personnel in stressful and dangerous environments. PhD-6 (ESRC SWDTC studentship): The Nature of ‘Shadow Security’ and Facilitators of Security Ownership (Adam Joinson [UBath], Debi Ashenden [CU], Stacey Conchie [LU]) This PhD will examine the existence and nature of shadow security—employees’ adoption of alternative security behaviours that are invisible to security professionals—within the security sector. Its focus is to provide a method of helping employees act as a resource for identifying more creative approaches to protective security. Specifically, the PhD will: (1) study what types of ‘shadow security’ employees use; (2) examine whether or not all types of ‘shadow security’ mechanisms are equal; (3) attempt to derive a set of heuristics that describe how ‘shadow security’ mechanisms are constructed by users, and understand any ‘dimensions’ on which these heuristics fail; and, (4) examine how this understanding can be leveraged to improve organisational security. 2) One PhD studentship on behavioural science and cyber-security (http://www.bath.ac.uk/management/phd/pdf/ursa-advert-behavioural-science-an… <http://www.bath.ac.uk/management/phd/pdf/ursa-advert-behavioural-science-an…>).
