digital subject symposium 12 May London
by Olga Goriunova 20 Apr '16

20 Apr '16

Dear all, I am organising the event below. Places are limited, so please make sure you email me to book a place if you'd like to attend. best, olga Senior Lecturer Media Arts Royal Holloway University of London *Digital Subjects* *12 May 2016, Senate House, London* *Organiser:* Olga Goriunova, Royal Holloway University of London Digital subjects can be many things: a nested set of abstractions assembled by algorithms; a dynamic data aggregate feeding upon the movement of bodies in space and time; an experiential, sensuous presence and performance online. Digital subjects are the subjects of profiles, video channels, search query histories, inboxes, logs of GPS coordinates, traded data of financial transactions or travel card usage. The reason why it's worth calling them subjects are the new ontological and epistemological demands placed by the rapid development of computational infrastructures and our cyborgian lives. The question of the digital subject is a political question wielded by the disciplinary lines of differentiation. These lines are cut in the thick distance that joins together human, posthuman, nonhuman and the digital (Goriunova). Some humanities regard digital subjects from the point of view of the operation of representational data surveillance (data gathered forms a shadow of the human (Raley)) and a political/legal question (Rouvroy); some data sciences ignore the distance and claim that data gives direct access to, in this case, humans (people are equal to their tweets). Many contemporary art practices, especially feminist performances online, explore the distance as a thick field of production that is not fully determined (Scourti). The aim of the event is to rethink the subject and think the digital subject from the point of view of different genealogies, reasons, expressions and logics. What we aim to work towards is not a return to any previous form of unity, but a way to construct an understanding of computational kinds of subjects and their ways of generation, production, and sustenance. *This is a Royal Holloway’s Humanities and Arts Research Centre event in cooperation with the Department of Media Arts* +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ *PROGRAMME* *12 May, **Senate House, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HU* *ROOM BSQ-SH264* 9.30 Registration 9.45 Introduction Chair: *Silvia Mollicchi* 10.00 – 10.50 *Lisa Blackman,* Data are Us? CFP: Studying Social Media and Digital Infrastructures: a workshop-within-a-conference
by Tarleton L. Gillespie 19 Apr '16

19 Apr '16

CFP: Studying Social Media and Digital Infrastructures: a workshop-within-a-conference part of the 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-50) paper submission deadline: June 15, 2016, 11:59pm HST. For fifty years, the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) has been a home for researchers in the information, computer, and system sciences (http://www.hicss.org/) The 50th anniversary event will be held January 4-7, 2017, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. With an eye to the exponential growth of digitalization and information networks in all aspects of human activity, HICSS has continued to expand its track on Digital and Social Media (http://www.hicss.org/#!track3/c1xcj) This year, among the Digital and Social Media track’s numerous offerings, we offer two minitracks meant to work in concert. Designed to sequence together into a single day-long conference-within-a-conference, they will host the best emerging scholarship from sociology, anthropology, communication, information studies, and science & technology studies that addresses the most pressing concerns around digital and social media. In addition, we have developed a pre-conference workshop on digital research methods that will inform and complement the work presented in these minitracks. Minitrack 1: Critical and Ethical Studies of Digital and Social Media http://www.hicss.org/#!critical-ethical-studies-of-dsm/c24u6 Organizers: Tarleton Gillespie, Mary Gray, and Robert Mason The minitrack will critically interrogate the role of DSM in supporting existing power structures or realigning power for underrepresented or social marginalized groups, and raise awareness or illustrate the ethical issues associated with doing research on DSM. Conceptual papers would address foundational theories of critical studies of media or ethical conduct in periods of rapid sociotechnical change—e.g., new ways of thinking about information exchange in communities and societies. Empirical papers would draw on studies of social media data that illustrate the critical or ethical dimensions of the use of such data. We welcome papers considering topics such as (but not limited to): * the power and responsibility of digital platforms * bias and discrimination in the collection and use of social data * political economies and labor conditions of paid and unpaid information work * values embedded in search engines and social media algorithms * changes in societal institutions driven by social media and data-intensive techniques * alternative forms of digital and social media * the ethical dynamics of studying human subjects through their online data * challenges in studying the flow of information and misinformation * barriers to and professional obligations around accessing and studying proprietary DSM data Minitrack 2: Values, Power, and Politics in Digital Infrastructures http://www.hicss.org/#!values-power-and-politics-in-digital-i/c19uj Organizers: Katie Shilton, Jaime Snyder, and Matthew Bietz This minitrack will explore the themes of values, power, and politics in relation to the infrastructures that support digital data, documents, and interactions. By considering how infrastructures – the underlying material properties, policy decisions, and mechanisms of interoperability that support digital platforms – are designed, maintained, and dismantled, the work presented in this mini-track will contribute to debates about sociotechnical aspects of digital and social media, with a focus on data, knowledge production, and information access. This session will focus on research that employs techniques such as infrastructural inversion, trace ethnography or design research (among other methods) to explore factors that influence the development of infrastructures and their use in practice. We welcome papers considering topics such as (but not limited to): * politics and ethics in digital platforms and infrastructures * values of stakeholders in digital infrastructures * materiality of values, power, or politics in digital infrastructures * tensions between commercial infrastructures and the needs of communities of practice * maintenance, repair, deletion, decay of digital and social media infrastructures * resistance, adoption and adaptation of digital infrastructures * alternative perspectives on what comprises infrastructures Pre-conference workshop: Digital Methods “Best Practices” http://shawnw.io/workshops/HICSS-digitalmethods Organizers: Shawn Walker, Mary Gray, and Robert Mason While the study of digital and social media and its impact on society has exploded, discussion of the best methods for doing so remains thin. Academic researchers and practitioners have deployed traditional techniques, from ethnography to social network analysis; but digital and social media challenge and even defy these techniques in a number of ways that must be examined. At the same time, digital and social media may benefit from more organic and unorthodox methods that get at aspects that cannot be examined otherwise. This intensive half day workshop will focus on approaches and best practices for studying digital and social media. We aim to go beyond the application of existing methods into online environments and collect innovative methods that break new ground while producing rigorous insights. This workshop will draw on invited and other participants’ research, teaching, classroom, and business experiences to think through “mixed methods” for qualitative and quantitative studies of digital and social media systems. Through a series of roundtables and guided discussions, the workshop will focus on best practices for studying digital and social media. As part of these discussions, we also will highlight technical and ethical challenges that arise from our studying cross-platform, digital and social media phenomenon. The output of this workshop will be an open, “co-authored” syllabus for a seminar offering what we might call a mixed-method, “from causal to complicated” approach to digital and social media research, applicable to both researchers and practitioners alike. How to apply April 1, 2016: Paper submission opens. June 15, 2016: Paper submission ends, 11:59pm HST. Submission to one of the the mini-tracks requires a complete paper. Instructions for submission requirements are available here: http://www.hicss.org/#!author-instructions/c1dsb Though the two minitracks are designed to work together, for submitting a paper you must choose one to apply to. Feel free to contact the mini-track organizers if you have questions about which is a better fit for your work. For the pre-conference workshop, application instructions, updates, materials, and a group syllabus will be posted on the workshop website. — Tarleton Gillespie tarleton(a)microsoft.com<mailto:tarleton@microsoft.com> Microsoft Research, New England Cornell University

Hi all, Are there any theories/models related to social media use/political communication/information aspects? I am doing a research in relation to social media use in Libyan revolution context. My main objectives are: -To find out how social media has been used among Libyans during the revolutionary and post-revolutionary period, through conducting semi-structured interviews and doing content analysis of sample of public Facebook pages. -To explore young Libyans’ perception regarding the impact of social media on their views and attitudes in relation to the revolution and post-revolutionary period. Do you have any suggestions? Will be helpful for me if you share your knowledge. Thanks, -- Sukaina Ehdeed PhD Student, Information School, University of Sheffield, UK Lecturer, Dept of Library and Information Science, University of Tripoli, Libya

Yet these poor decisions are leading to epidemics, which represent some of the greatest challenges we face as a society today. Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), which include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, account for approx. 60% of total premature deaths worldwide. These diseases share the same four behavioural risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful consumption of alcohol and can be prevented and sometimes even reversed with simple lifestyle changes. Eating more healthily, exercising more appropriately, sleeping and relaxing more, as well as simply being more aware of one's state of health are all things that would lead to improved health. Yet knowing exactly what to change and how, implementing changes and maintaining changes over long time periods are all things people find challenging. These are also problems, for which we believe recommender systems can provide assistance by offering specific, tailored suggestions for behavioural change. In recent years recommender systems for health has become a popular topic within the RecSys community and a selection of empirical contributions and demo systems have been published. Efforts to date, however have been sporadic and lack coordination. We lack shared infrastructure such as datasets, appropriate cross-disciplinary knowledge, even agreed upon goals. It is our aim to use this workshop as a vehicle to: ** Establish the problem as a prominent RecSys topic ** Create a community of researchers who will determine a concrete research agenda for health in RecSys ** Attract scientists from other domains to RecSys: health (e.g. sports, nutrition, medicine), psychology, signal processing, wearables, HCI, etc. ** Create new ideas for collaboration, particularly cross-domain collaborations ** Establish shared infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics, but are not limited to: ** Motivation - increasing motivation, understanding motivation, utilising psychological models, gamification ** Algorithms for Health Recommendations ** Interfaces - Explanations/Presentation, Feedback, Usability ** Persuasive Design ** Sensors - e.g. activity tracking, context detection, quantified self, motivation by self assessment ** Mobile devices ** Gamification - e.g. Making exercise or diet fun ** Social Motivation - Inclusion of Social Context, Coactivity and Group Recommenders ** Knowledge representation - Transfer of domain knowledge to digital systems ** Ethics - Gap between recommendations and medical advice ** Ease of use - embedding systems into everyday life Learning about health ** User modelling, behavioural analytics and behavioural change Submissions: ============ We solicit short research papers (up to 4 pages) & short postion papers (up to 2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. Papers should be submitted in EasyChair to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=healthrecsys2016 Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must be written in English; * contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; * be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template ( http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; * be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; All papers will be peer-reviewed, must not be under review in any other conference, workshop or journal (at the time of submission), and must contain novel contributions. Accepted papers will be published according to the ACM RECSYS 2016 WS publication rules. Location: ========= The workshop will take place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) or the IBM Research campuses in Boston, MA, USA (venue not fixed yet) and will be held in conjunction with the 10th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems.
