New Book Series Announcement
by DAL JIN 29 Apr '16

29 Apr '16

Dear AOIR members, Routledge and I have agreed to launch a new book series (Routledge Research in Digital Media and Culture in Asia) since April 2016. This will be of interest to some of you. ROUTLEDGE RESEARCH IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND CULTURE IN ASIA Editor Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University Since the late 1990s, Asia has emerged as one of the major centers for the production of digital media and transnational popular culture. While the influence of Western culture and technologies has continued in the global markets, the Asian cultural and digital industries have developed many of their digital technologies, such as social networking sites, instant mobile messengers, smartphones and relevant applications. Asian cultural industries have also created media/cultural products, such as television programs, films, music, and digital games, and expanded the export of these products to the global markets. Consequently, Asian digital technologies and popular culture consisting of non-Western based digital media and cultural forms have rapidly become a global sensation wherein Western audiences as well as Asian users enjoy several local cultural forms, including popular music and television programs, as well as digital technologies. This new book series critically, culturally, and historically contextualizes the nascent development of Asian popular culture and digital technologies. The books in this series emphasize that digital technologies and culture are fundamentally altering the ways in which we communicate. The series examines questions about the impact of digital media and society in all its facets, including economics, culture and politics. As its detailed major goals, this book series investigates Asian media, popular culture and digital technologies, encompassing all major cultural sectors, from television programs to online games, and from pop music to smartphones, as well as digital technologies and social media, through the use of consistent theoretical and methodological frameworks. In particular, the books in this series explore media convergence between digital technologies and content to analyze the emergence of cutting-edge digital culture, such as webtoons, mobile novels, and mobile games. The books in the series mostly determine the possibility of the advancement of non-Western theories and new theoretical perspectives in the midst of the continuation of Western dominance. In other words, with the growth of local popular culture and digital technologies, the books explore whether non-Western perspectives challenge central assumptions and arguments developed by Western perspectives. They may discuss the integration of Western and non-Western perspectives in media and area studies, the uses of theories of global comparative research, the relevance of non-Western theories and models, and successful and failed efforts at theoretical cross-pollination. We hope to secure the book series as the platform of choice for the best scholarship within the field. While our primary emphasis will be upon single/joint-authored books, we will consider edited collections where the book is brought together by editors in ways that result in a coherent work that is both innovative and more than the sum of the individual chapters. The topic areas listed below are illustrative only.  Asian Video Games  Digital Storytelling Asia: convergence of popular culture and the smartphone  Political Economy of the Asian App Economy in the Digital Platform Era  Asian Cinema  New Media and Asian Society  Asian Mobile Communication, Culture and Society  Transnationality and Digital Migration  Platform Technologies and Transformation of Asian Youth Culture  Digital Asia  Cyber Security, Intellectual Property, and Digital Labor in Asia  Asian ICT Industry and Policy  History of Asian Digital Media  Asian Youth and Media  Asian Soft Power  Construction of Pan-Asian Culture  Regional Co-production in Cultural Industries  South Asian Digital Media and Popular Culture  Korean Pop Music  Comparison Studies of Korean and Japanese Popular Culture Please contact me if you have any questions and relevant projects you want to submit to this book series Dal Yong Jin (djin(a)sfu.ca) School of Communication, Simon Fraser University

REMINDER: CfP - conference: Fomenting political Violence - Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, Essex University, 9-10 Sept. 2016
by Steffen Krueger 28 Apr '16

28 Apr '16

Dear colleagues, here a reminder of our Call for Papers! All best, Steffen Krueger *Fomenting political violence – Phantasy, Language, Media, Action.* A two-day international conference at the *Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, * *University of Essex*, UK, September 9 – 10 2016, in co-operation with * Bournemouth University* and the *University of Oslo* (UiO), Norway. Steffen Krueger, postdoc and lecturer, Dept. of Media and Communication, University of Oslo Karl Figlio, Professor Emeritus, Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. Barry Richards, Professor of Political Psychology, Bournemouth University. This two-day conference invites researchers from a wide range of disciplines to address the relationship between phantasy, language, media and action. Do language and phantasy feed into one another, especially in the contemporary mediascape, fostering an extremist mentality that foments violent political action? And, if so, how can we understand the relationship between action on the one side, and phantasy and language in their specific forms of mediation on the other? Although it is difficult to establish causal links between, for example, racist slurs and racist violence, we can nevertheless observe how increases in ethnocentric, xenophobic and fundamentalist speech in online forums and on social networking sites go together with increases in right-extremist criminal acts, as is presently the case in Germany. Various traditions of research into prejudice, extremism, violence and the media have taken different routes in conceptualising the links between the above concepts. Discourse analysis, for example, has pointed to the subtle ways in which language use can help make symbolic violence permissible. Social psychology, and especially the social identity tradition, has shown how typical tendencies in group dynamics suggest certain fault lines for larger-scale political behaviour. Media effect studies, in turn, have suggested a string of concepts based on social-psychological work, such as “uses-and-gratifications”, the “spiral of silence”, “agenda setting”, and “frame theory”, which can be instrumental in conceiving how people’s construction of reality, facilitated by media, might lead to widely held dispositions for the legitimation of socio-political action and/or the restraining and containing of such action. Although there is a substantial psychoanalytic literature on prejudice, ethnic and religious hatred, and fundamentalism, there is little on the process of fomenting violence, which moves from phantasy through language into action. With a view to intervening in and advancing the above traditions, the conference invites papers inquiring into how psychoanalysis can help understand the build-up to eruptions of violence. How can conceptions of sociality, relationality, divisiveness, exclusion and affect, developed in various psychoanalytic traditions, shed light on the often invisible ties that link what we do to what we feel, imagine, hear, see, read or say – or to an atmosphere of extremism? Can psychoanalysis contribute to deliberations around policy and practice in relation to freedom of speech, ‘hate speech’ and media regulation, as well as foster a sensitivity to implied prejudice in everyday encounters? The attempt to gain a more rounded, situated and dialectical way to understand these phenomena suggests ‘scenic’ methodology, for which the work of Alfred Lorenzer – a psychoanalytic-social theorist not well known in the English-speaking world – is central. We plan to reserve one session to explore his work, but we invite you imaginatively to address the full range of issues relevant to the topic of the conference. We encourage an open, exploratory manner and look forward to engaging discussions. *Keynote speakers*: - Vera King (Frankfurt): *"Fighting for something great ..." - * Intergenerational Constellations and Functions of Self-Culturalization for Adolescents in Migrant Families. - Barry Richards (Bournemouth): *"A most brutal and implacable superego"*. *Indicative **fields of research include*: - Psychodynamics and social dynamics of political violence, and their enmeshment / co-constitution. - Spaces, scopes and fields of action. - Gendered forms / gender dynamics. - Media discourses / media performances. - (Symbolic) interactions. - Internal and external worlds. - Freedom of expression vs blasphemy and prejudice. - -isms, -phobias and psychopathologies. - Methodological and/or theoretical reflections. - Researching across cultures. - Historical studies. - Humiliation and violence. - Violence and purification. - Bystanders and collusion with political violence. - Psychotic realities: Paranoia and delusions of threat. - Hate speech and hate actions. Yet these poor decisions are leading to epidemics, which represent some of the greatest challenges we face as a society today. Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), which include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, account for approx. 60% of total premature deaths worldwide. These diseases share the same four behavioural risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful consumption of alcohol and can be prevented and sometimes even reversed with simple lifestyle changes. Eating more healthily, exercising more appropriately, sleeping and relaxing more, as well as simply being more aware of one's state of health are all things that would lead to improved health. Yet knowing exactly what to change and how, implementing changes and maintaining changes over long time periods are all things people find challenging. These are also problems, for which we believe recommender systems can provide assistance by offering specific, tailored suggestions for behavioural change. In recent years recommender systems for health has become a popular topic within the RecSys community and a selection of empirical contributions and demo systems have been published. Efforts to date, however have been sporadic and lack coordination. We lack shared infrastructure such as datasets, appropriate cross-disciplinary knowledge, even agreed upon goals. It is our aim to use this workshop as a vehicle to: ** Establish the problem as a prominent RecSys topic ** Create a community of researchers who will determine a concrete research agenda for health in RecSys ** Attract scientists from other domains to RecSys: health (e.g. sports, nutrition, medicine), psychology, signal processing, wearables, HCI, etc. ** Create new ideas for collaboration, particularly cross-domain collaborations ** Establish shared infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics, but are not limited to: ** Motivation - increasing motivation, understanding motivation, utilising psychological models, gamification ** Algorithms for Health Recommendations ** Interfaces - Explanations/Presentation, Feedback, Usability ** Persuasive Design ** Sensors - e.g. activity tracking, context detection, quantified self, motivation by self assessment ** Mobile devices ** Gamification - e.g. Making exercise or diet fun ** Social Motivation - Inclusion of Social Context, Coactivity and Group Recommenders ** Knowledge representation - Transfer of domain knowledge to digital systems ** Ethics - Gap between recommendations and medical advice ** Ease of use - embedding systems into everyday life Learning about health ** User modelling, behavioural analytics and behavioural change Submissions: ============ We solicit short research papers (up to 4 pages) & short postion papers (up to 2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. YouTube Conference: CFP reopened, additional keynote speakers confirmed
by Jean Burgess 27 Apr '16

27 Apr '16

Sharing by request of the organisers: Your last chance to submit a paper – the CFP is reopened now we have some new speakers to announce in addition to Jean Burgess who is giving an overview of YouTube and the broader online video environment have changed in the past decade, and what its competing futures look like, how we might learn to recognise such patterns of change empirically, and the key methodological approaches to studying the co-evolution of proprietary digital media platforms and their cultures of use over time. Sonia Livingstone whose ethnographic fieldwork with a class of thirteen year olds at an ordinary London school explores young people's experiences of growing up and learning in a digital world - in school, at home, and with their friends. YouTube comes in and out of focus, varying in meaning and significance yet consistently insinuating itself into their everyday experiences of connected and disconnected learning and opportunity. Farida Vis and Mike Thelwall will reflect on - via a number of different case studies - their collaboration over eight years of researching YouTube, including the development of tools for collecting YouTube data, and their continuing interest in YouTube research in the context of teaching social media analytics skills to students when a lot of current social media research focuses on Twitter. Stuart Cunningham will be talking about changes in screen entertainment enabled by YouTube (amongst other social media platforms). His research with David Craig takes an ‘ecological’ approach by investigating the interdependencies amongst its elements: mapping the platform’s affordances, content innovation, creative labor, monetization and management, new forms of media globalization, and the critical cultural concerns raised by this nascent media industry.
