For those of you who follow IT and West Africa: Event Description The Right to Access Information Commission in collaboration with the Open Data Council and the Ministry of Information and Communication with support from the Open Aid Partnership of the World Bank and other partners are organising a two-day datafest to raise the awareness of Open Data and its importance to economic development through a multi stakeholder process on Thursday and Friday, April 21 - 22, 2016 at 10 a.m. As a Preamble to that event will be a symposium celebrating International Open Data Day on March 5, 2016 and an ideathon in the afternoon to kickstart the Hackathon process which ends on April 22. The Hackathon will encourage young developers and coders in Information Technology to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects via hackathons over 6 weeks on specific topics to include: - Peacebuilding and State-Building - The Sustainable Development Goals - Exposing Gender-Based Violence - Land and Women’s Rights - Academia - Agriculture - Legal aid, the Judiciary and Freedom of Information Open Data Day <http://opendataday.org/> is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption of open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments. The event is open to all, curious citizens, journalists, tech-geeks, students, scientists, graphic designers. Come by on the day to learn, hack, wrangle and just plain hangout. We emphasize that no specialist skills are needed - come along to learn and connect with other members of the community. You don’t need to know anything about (open) data or technology in advance – enthusiasm and interest is all that is needed and you’ll get support and advice from others! Events: The following are the events that would be held on the Open Data Day: - Launch of national awareness campaign on open data - Formal presentations on open data activities - Ideation workshops for brainstorming on projects related to open data - Scrap-a-thon workshops on creating web tools for collecting data from sources online - Sessions and talks from some of our amazing partners, such as Code for Africa and the World Bank! Learn more about how you can use tech to drive social impact for your own communities! Register for Training Before the Hackathon! Never been to a hackathon before? Want to get accustomed with how open data can be used for creating products that benefit the community? Sign up for our Data Fest Training in the link below! The training shall run from the 4th-5th of March. Register Now! Limited seats available! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1nIEDvWO_Sh82hAmEYU5Ecj9HRBaSLRXqNADl0Jks3Z… FAQs: Q. Who is this event for? A. Everyone. If you have an idea for using open data, want to find an interesting project to contribute towards, learn about how to visualize or analyze data or simply want to see what's happening, then definitely come participate! No matter your skillset or interests, we shall be fostering opportunities for you to learn and help the global open data community grow. Developers: We need computer cowboys and cowgirls like yourself to wrangle data into something useful. That means visualization, notification, integration, etc., all in the name of doing something crazy and fantastic. Designers: We need people like you to make the everything look amazing, feel intuitive, and have a smooth user experience. Librarians: I heard you folks like books and eat catalogs of data for breakfast. You beautiful people are going to scour the earth for interesting data, help the rest of us figure out what’s important, and generally be useful. Statisticians: YES! YOU ARE SO NEEDED. Seriously. While we can find it, blow it up, calculate it, and make it look pretty, we needs us some mean number crunchin’ to present meaningful visualizations. Join up. Citizens: We need you the most. If it weren’t for you, this whole thing wouldn’t be happening. We need ideas, cheerleaders, and friends to spread the word. Q. What to Expect? A. A lot will be going on. So... expect to: - Learn more about open data. - Find out how your local and national government could do more to release open data. - Meet & network with tons of cool people in your city and around the world. - Voice your opinion & share your ideas with the people and media attending. - Find out about apps being created, and get to play around with them as well. - Help out with parts of the conceptualization, creation, design, advertisement and testing of apps. - Have lots and lots of fun! Q. Should I bring anything? A. We recommend bringing a device that will allow you to access and browse the internet (via wifi - wifi will be provided). A laptop or tablet would be perfect. If you plan to code, design or write quite bit of content we recommend bringing a laptop rather than just a tablet as it will be easier to write with. Q. Do I need specific skills to participate? A. No - you don’t need any special skills (technical, data or otherwise) to get involved. Interest and enthusiasm are recommended :-) Our Partners for the Event: - Open Data Council - Ministry of Information and Communication, Sierra Leone - The World Bank - Code for Africa WHENThursday, April 21, 2016 at 9:00 AM - Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 11:30 PM (GMT) - Add to Calendar <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/open-data-festival-sierra-leone-2016-registrat…> WHEREFreetown - Right to Access Information Commission Open Data Council and the Ministry of Information and Communication Miatta Conference Centre,Youyi Building, Brookfields, Freetown, Sierra Leone - View Map <https://www.eventbrite.com/e/open-data-festival-sierra-leone-2016-registrat…>

Announcing AoIR's new Association Coordinator
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

As many of you know, AoIR is almost entirely a volunteer-run organization, with one exception: the Association Coordinator. The AC helps make this organization run on a daily basis: answering your emails about membership issues, updating the website and social media, getting all of the conference proceedings up on SPIR, and a thousand other little things that are part of the work of an Association. This month we make a transition in our AC position. We are pleased to welcome Courtney Bennett as the new Association Coordinator for AoIR. Courtney holds a PhD in communication from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MSc in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has worked as a consultant for several years, for clients such as the Blue Shield of California Foundation and Children's Hospital Oakland, and currently has a contract with the University of California, Office of the President in the Office of Diversity and Engagement. Courtney is stepping in as Anna Hoffmann, who has served as our Coordinator for just over two years, takes her leave so that she can focus more actively on her academic career. Anna has been essential to making the Association go these past years, and I personally am grateful for her dedication, conscientiousness, and attention to the Association. We will miss Anna tremendously, and wish her luck and give her our eternal gratitude. ~Jenny Stromer-Galley President, AoIR

We call this area “player-computer interaction”. The goal of the conference is to highlight and foster discussion of current high quality research in games and HCI as foundations for the future of digital play. To this end, the conference will feature streams that blend academic research and games with research papers, interactive demos, and industry case studies. CHI PLAY grew out of the increasing work around games and play emerging from the ACM annual conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) as well as smaller conferences such as Fun and Games and Gamification. CHI PLAY is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group for Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI). IMPORTANT DATES FULL PAPERS AND NOTES Paper deadline: 18th April, 2016 Reviews sent to authors: 7 June, 2016 Rebuttals due: 14 June, 2016 Decisions: 5th July, 2016 Camera-Ready Deadline: 12th August, 2016 STUDENT GAME COMPETITION Student game competition submissions: 27th May, 2016 Student game competition notifications: 24th June, 2016 WORKSHOPS/COURSES Workshop proposal submissions: 27th May, 2016 Workshop proposal notifications: 24th June, 2016 Workshop participation submissions: 12th July, 2016 Workshop participation notifications: 12th August, 2016 WORKS-IN PROGRESS, DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM Paper deadline: 15th July, 2016 Review deadline: 5th August, 2016 Decisions: 12th August, 2016 Camera-Ready Deadline: 19th August, 2016 SUBMISSIONS As a SIGCHI-sponsored conference, CHI PLAY will consider submissions related to games and play. We encourage submissions on novel and innovative game interactions and mechanics and acknowledge that contributions on systems research may involve less extensive evaluation than more traditional research papers. We welcome submissions from all topics in interactive game research that are relevant to player-computer interaction, including but not limited to the following: - Game Interaction - Novel Game Control - Novel Implementation Techniques that Affect Player Experience - Evaluation of Feedback and Display Technologies for Games - Gamification - Neurogaming - Persuasive Games - Games for Health, Learning and Change - Exertion Games - Player Experience - Virtual and Augmented Reality Games - Games User Research - Game Evaluation Methods - Psychology of Players and Games - Player Typologies - Accessible and Inclusive Game Design - Novel Game Mechanics Impacting Player Experience - Casual Game Design Studies - Social Game Experiences - Serious Games - Alternate Reality Games - Tools for Game Creation - Developer Experiences and Studies of Developers - Industry Case Studies Although we are interested in papers on the effects of various technologies, software, or algorithms on player or developer experience, technical contributions without clear indications of the impact on players or developers are not within the scope of CHI PLAY. SUBMISSION TYPES We encourage the following research submission types: PAPERS (4 pages notes and 10 page papers, references excluded from page limit) Papers must be in the two-column ACM SIGCHI format and in the English language (paper failing to meet these criteria will be desk rejected with a brief review from the papers chairs). All accepted papers must be presented as a talk at the conference with the option of also presenting a demo or video at the conference. Paper length must match the size of the contribution, and the same general review criteria hold for all papers. All papers will undergo the same review process and be published in the same way: all accepted submissions in this category will be included in the conference proceedings and we intend to publish through the ACM Digital Library. Authors are invited to submit high-quality original work to advance the field. Papers will be subject to blind peer reviewing and all identifying information about authors needs to be removed from the submitted manuscripts. Citations to own work must not be anonymous, but should be described in a way that does not reveal you as the author of the cited work. Submissions must be made using the Precision Conference System (PCS). We encourage authors strongly to submit a video figure to support and accompany their submission. The committee will choose the best to be part of a plenary session at the conference. WORKS-IN-PROGRESS (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format excluding references, poster presentation at the conference) Works-in-progress provide a unique opportunity for late-breaking results to be presented in a poster format. Accepted submissions will be presented as a poster at the conference. Posters papers will be lightly peer-reviewed and archived in the proceedings planned to be published in the ACM digital library. We encourage authors to submit a video figure to support their submission, and the committee will choose the best videos to be part of a plenary session at the conference. CHI PLAY STUDENT GAME COMPETITION (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format excluding references, interactive demonstration at the conference) The CHI PLAY Student Game Competition will provide a unique opportunity for students to showcase their interactive play systems and designs. Students will need to submit a video of their game as well as proof of student status (full-time or part-time, all levels up to Ph.D.). A jury panel will nominate the best submissions for an interactive presentation at the conference, where a panel of experts choose the winners. WORKSHOPS (6 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstract format, workshop at the conference) Workshops allow conference participants that share a common interest to deepen their knowledge and meet in an interactive hands-on learning and discussion environment. They provide great opportunities for community-building at CHI PLAY. Workshops should focus on a theme in one of CHI PLAY’s core areas mentioned above. We especially welcome workshops that bridge the gap between practitioner and researcher knowledge or between communities. Workshops should provide novel perspectives and generate ideas about player-computer interaction. If you are passionate about this field, please consider organizing a workshop. Workshops can independently from the conference result in special issues of journals, wikis, websites, or books. DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM (4 pages in ACM SIGCHI Extended Abstracts Format excluding references, plus a poster presentation at the conference) The CHI PLAY 2016 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for Doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests in games and HCI in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of distinguished researchers. Students who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along that they can no longer make changes are welcomed to submit for this full-day event. DC participants receive free registration to CHI PLAY. COURSES (4 pages in ACM SIGCHI format, course at the conference) Courses at CHI PLAY should allow participants to learn new hands-on knowledge about player-game interaction, development and evaluation. They are great opportunities for industry pros to teach their knowledge to an interested audience and allow interdisciplinary knowledge development between practitioners and researchers. If you work in game development and are eager to teach a workshop at CHI PLAY, we look forward to your submission. DEMOS/PLAY CHI PLAY offers a chance for game developers and researchers to showcase their commercial game or to deploy multiplayer social games at the conference. Please contact the DEMOS/PLAY chairs if you are interested in showcasing your game during the conference breaks. REVIEW PROCESS: All PAPERS We have selected a program committee of experts in human-computer interaction and game research to lead the formal review process. Once your paper is submitted as a blind manuscript in the correct format, our program committee and external reviewers will provide at least 3 high quality reviews (at least two from our PC members). The Associate Chair (AC) will contribute their own opinion about the paper and summarize the individual reviews, meta-reviewing the paper and providing advice to the authors regarding the rebuttal. A rebuttal is a chance to clarify any misconceptions that the reviewers might have about the paper. This is an opportunity for authors to rebut factual error in reviews or to answer questions asked by reviewers. Rebuttals are required to be written in a very short timeframe after the reviews are sent out. CHI PLAY rebuttals are 2500 characters in length. The PC and conference chairs will review and discuss all submitted rebuttals. The papers chairs will then deliberate in close communication with the committee members about the acceptance of papers. Authors will then be recommended to make certain changes before the camera-ready submission and acceptance might be tentative until those changes are included. At least one author of the paper must register for the conference and present the paper at the conference. CONFERENCE COMMITTEE CONFERENCE CHAIR Anna Cox, University College London, UK Zachary O. by Erik Bengtson 08 Apr '16

08 Apr '16

I am in the panel of the workshop presented below. There has been an extension of the deadline and I would like to inform about this. I hope to reach researcher in the borderlands between internet research and the field of rhetorical research. The workshop will include discussions on contemporary political rhetoric, the formation of social movements and the international rhetoric of terror organisations. To understand these areas it is (of course) of key importance to understand the function of internet and social media in relation to these areas . I hope to reach PhD-students and emerging scholars (dissertation no earlier than 2012) that are interested in contributing to this discussion. /Erik Bengtson, Uppsala University CALL FOR PAPERS UPDATE: Deadline Extended to 15 April 2016 “Crossing Traditions: Reimagining the Political” International Rhetoric Workshop Uppsala University, Sweden 17-19 August 2016 The International Rhetoric Workshop (IRW) invites PhD students and emerging scholars to participate in developing the study of political rhetoric and its theoretical traditions. At beautiful Uppsala University, Sweden, we will meet in the last days of summer to advance rhetorical scholarship on “Crossing Traditions: Reimagining the Political”. In an informal setting with a focus on engaging discussion, developing scholarship, and extending community, IRW welcomes everyone interested in rhetoric’s relation to politics, theory, history, power or its formative concepts to join us. The workshop theme addresses questions of how various traditions of rhetorical theory meet and merge within global rhetorical practices, and how these crossings can change and develop the concept of the political. Contemporary rhetorical studies include the study and criticism of contemporary persuasive practices, theoretical discussions on the conditions for communal meaning-making, and historical studies of rhetorical practices and rhetorical thinking in different times and places. The emphasis rhetorical studies places on cross-fertilization between these different forms of inquiry opens opportunities to take on the challenges posed by contemporary politics. Suggested themes or questions to be furthered at the workshop: How to understand geographically structured traditions of rhetorical practices: their local, regional, and national negotiations. What happens when these traditions crosses boundaries: how they are compared, merged or intersected with other specific practices globally. How political and rhetorical theories change and merge across academic traditions. Theoretical or conceptual contributions to the rhetorical conditions of possibility for the political to emerge. Politics and its relations to established power structures and resistance movements. How rhetoric’s multifaceted, transnational intellectual history has crossed borders: its ancient heritage, its Arabic-European transformations, its mutation into post-colonial settings across the world and various histories of thought. How rhetoric’s continuous engagement with political, philosophical, and aesthetic thought is played out in global political settings. Format and participants The format consists of a three-day workshop at Uppsala. The core activities are breakout sessions in which workshop participants review and discuss work-in-progress of their ongoing research with faculty. In addition, each day will open with a keynote address and conclude with faculty discussion panels on topics relevant to the theme and the participants’ research interests. IRW will include three keynote addresses from internationally recognized scholars working at the intersection of rhetorical and political thought: Debra Hawhee (Penn State University, USA), Kari Palonen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland), and Philippe-Joseph Salazar (University of Cape Town, South Africa). Papers will be pre-circulated to a small group of about 5-6 workshop participants and one member of the invited faculty and everybody is expected to come with suggestions and offer comments on each other’s work. IRW will also have panel sessions, led by the invited faculty, on methodological and theoretical topics relating to the theme and participant’s research interests (more on that as soon as we have all applications!). The invited faculty consists of: Mats Rosengren (Uppsala University, Sweden), María Alejandra Vitale (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Jiyeon Kang (University of Iowa, USA), Jairos Kangira (University of Namibia), Dilip Gaonkar (Northwestern University, USA), Anne Ulrich (University of Tübingen, Germany), Alan Finlayson (University of East Anglia, UK) and our three keynote speakers. They work in the fields of postcolonial intellectual history, securitization, neo-liberal forms of governmentality, the changing forms of protest movements, the challenge of the political to continental thought, and national political rhetoric at the intersection of geopolitical rhetorical practices. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and submitted through the form below. Abstract submission is open to PhD students and emerging scholars who have received their PhD no earlier than January 2012. Deadline for abstract: 15 April 2016. (23.59 GMT) To submit your abstract, please follow the submission link from the official website: http://www.internationalrhetoric.com Letters of acceptance will be sent no later than 30 April 2016. Please note that if an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper of your work-in-progress should be submitted by 30 June 2016. Final papers should be 3000-6000 words in length, excluding notes and references. Registration fee (includes participation in the workshop with pre-circulated paper, one informal dinner, as well as breakfast and lunch for three days): 100 EUR The Planning Committee understands that the financial burden for attending a workshop can be heavy for young scholars, and we have made every effort to make IRW a low-cost event. It means that besides having a low registration fee, we include most of the food throughout the three days. If you are in need of support to participate in the workshop and cannot acquire this from your home university, please contact the planning committee to discuss options. We are also happy to provide practical suggestions on how to keep the costs down when in Uppsala! - - - Erik Bengtson Doktorand / Ph.D Fellow Avdelningen för retorik / Section of Rhetoric Litteraturvetenskapliga institutionen / Department of Literature Uppsala universitet / Uppsala University Thunbergsvägen 3 P Box 632, SE-751 26 Uppsala Sverige / Sweden erik.bengtson(a)littvet.uu.se<mailto:erik.bengtson@littvet.uu.se>
