Data Ethics case study
by Nathaniel Poor 05 Apr '16

05 Apr '16

You may remember my question to the list about using hacked data, or not, from a while ago. I am pleased to say it has been published as a case study at Data & Society, where you can find it here: http://bdes.datasociety.net/council-output/case-study-the-ethics-of-using-h… <http://bdes.datasociety.net/council-output/case-study-the-ethics-of-using-h…> We even did a little analysis of the AoIR thread and included that, essentially as expert testimony. CFP RO-MAN 2016 Workshop: The Challenges of Human-Robot Interaction in Real-World Contexts
by Somaya Ben Allouch 05 Apr '16

05 Apr '16

Dear all, Please see below the CFP for our workshop at RO-MAN 2016. Please disseminate in your own networks. ************************************************************************ Call For Papers: Workshop The Challenges of Human-Robot Interaction in Real-World Contexts In conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN 2016) http://ro-man2016.org/ Workshop Date: August 31, 2016, New York, NY, USA www.challengesofhumanrobotinteractioninrealworldcontexts.wordpress.com/ ************************************************************************ Introduction ------------------ Most HRI research is performed in the lab which offers a simplification of the real-world context to allow problem solving. However, robotic systems should eventually be tested in ecologically valid settings to determine whether and how they actually meet real-world needs. Only recently, robotic systems have become reliable and robust enough to be deployed in real-world settings, such as homes, schools, care facilities, museums and alike. And long-term acceptance research of social robots in such real-world settings is about to become a sub-field in evaluating the interactions between robots and their human users. This stresses the need for more ecologically valid research and the inclusion of the real potential end-users required to be able to gain insight into how people perceive, accept and interact with robots in real-world contexts as well as to test the feasibility and/or usability of these robots in such contexts. The aim of ecologically valid research is to use methods, materials and settings that approximate the real-world as much as possible. Studying HRIs in real-world contexts reveals more natural interactions and human reactions. Moreover, the robotic system can be tested within its intended use context which is unpredictable, dynamic and unstructured, something that is difficult if not impossible to simulate in the lab. Therefore, HRI research in real-world contexts offers a unique insight into the interactions between robots and their human users. However, studying HRI in real-world contexts also brings along many challenges, among other topics related to: - Technologically with regard to the robustness and reliability of the system - Methodologically: with reference to the controllability of variables and a lack of validated measurement tool kits for the evaluation - Contextually: in relation to the social and cultural aspects of HRI Aim of the workshop ------------------ The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from both industry and academia to discuss best practices as well as pitfalls of HRI research in real-world settings, and to provide the HRI community with guidelines to inform future developments of their robotic systems. We invite multi-disciplinary contributions from researchers and practitioners from the fields of HRI, engineering, computer sciences, fine and media arts, (interactive) design, sociology, anthropology, psychology, neurosciences, cognitive sciences, semiotics, linguistics, literary studies, history, policy, law, communication science, and cultural studies. Submissions ------------------ We welcome prospective participants to submit extended abstracts (max. 4 pages) covering any relevant topic (related to the problem statement on the homepage) addressing real-world HRI research. In addition to papers presenting empirical research, we also welcome papers about new theoretical perspectives, design challenges, and ethical or legal issues related to HRI research in real world contexts. The manuscripts should use the IEEE RO-MAN two-column format. Please submit a PDF copy of your manuscript to maartje.degraaf(a)utwente.nl. Important deadlines: - Submission deadline: May 22, 2016 - Notification of acceptance: June 1, 2016 - Camera-ready deadline: June 15, 2016 All submitted papers within the scope of the workshop will be peer-reviewed. Papers will be selected based on their originality, relevance, contributions, technical clarity, and presentation. Accepted papers will require that at least one author registers for and attends the workshop. After the conference, accepted authors will be offered to submit extended versions of their workshop contributions to be considered for a book chapter published by Springer. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to provide a short pitch (2-3 minutes) about their most relevant topic to address in real-world HRI research, after which there is time scheduled for extended discussion (10-15 minutes) on that topic with the workshop audience. Advances made through the discussions will serve to push the sub-field of HRI in real-world contexts forward. Parenting for a Digital Future - News April 2016
by Sonia Livingstone - Parenting for a Digital Future 05 Apr '16

05 Apr '16

View this email in your browser (http://us10.campaign-archive1.com/?u=6ed42cda03012774a98ca3add&id=b5675ecec…) ** ------------------------------------------------------------ This month parenting.digital (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/) turned one! Since our launch (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/03/18/welcome-to-our-bl…) in spring of last year we have used the latest research to answer some of dilemmas foremost in the minds of parents, and those who support them. Our team (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/about/our-team/) , with help from guest posters, has explored: * How parents around the world (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/around-the-world/) are bringing up their children in a digital age * What are parents’ visions of their children’s futures (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/01/06/reading-the-runes…) , and that of wider society * The risks (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/09/more-online-risks…) and opportunities that characterize the digital future In celebration, we wanted to highlight some of the recent content that you might have missed. (As always click here (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/subscribe/) to subscribe) Knowing that parents are always hungry for good advice, we published 10 tips for digital citizen’s parents (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/01/04/10-tips-for-digit…) , full of sensible wisdom on why your teen’s use of social media isn’t necessarily a problem (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/03/21/if-we-cant-prove-…) , but what you or your kids (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/24/learning-from-chi…) can do (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/15/are-the-trolls-wi…) if it is. As part of our on-going project to show the texture and diversity of what children, young people and families actually do online, we presented emerging research looking at the surprisingly wide array of digital skills that pre-schoolers need to use on tablets (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/29/what-are-pre-scho…) , and what parents (and apps designers) should consider when designing for or evaluating learning potential. Writing against the ‘deficit narrative’ that characterizes policy about poor families, this research showed the myriad ways in which kids from low-income Hispanic families in the US acted to facilitate their families’ digital lives (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/03/07/when-children-are…) . We also considered where and why parents (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/01/27/where-do-us-mothe…) go online to find information and support, and when they still called on their face-to-face communities. So not all families are necessarily digital families, and some have even gone as far as to try to consciously opt-out (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/01/14/a-digital-future-…) of the culture of ‘digital by default.’ The internet holds special promise for many marginalized young people, for reasons of disability (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/17/be-independent-go…) or poverty (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/03/09/youth-and-digital…) . But these opportunities are not evenly distributed, nor are they viewed with the same enthusiasm by parents around the world (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/03/03/why-we-post-why-p…) . For example, research on parents in Ireland (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/11/digital-parenting…) , Russia (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/01/20/digital-parenting…) and in the Asia Pacific (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/03/16/going-online-in-t…) region showed very different approaches to ‘good’ digital parenting – with some overlaps too. Calls for new policy interventions aimed at supporting children and young people to develop ethical (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/12/30/wendy-grossman-re…) , critical approaches to privacy (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2016/02/03/privacy-and-data-…) need to take into context these existing assumptions, in order to develop digital skills for a new generation. We hope you’ll read and share some of the posts above, and get in touch with us if you have something you’d like to write (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/about/editorial-guidelines/) this year. ============================================================ ** (http://www.twitter.com/) ** (http://www.facebook.com) ** (http://mailchimp.com) Copyright © 2016 London School of Economics and Political Science, All rights reserved. Call for Papers E-Vote-ID 2016 - Deadline 27 May 2016
by Robert Krimmer 05 Apr '16

05 Apr '16

________________________________ Prof. Dr. Robert Krimmer Professor of e-Governance Dear All, it is about time to start preparing your papers for E-Vote-ID 2016. Read more below or on www.e-vote-id.org/2016/. Best, Robert --- International Joint Conference on Electronic Voting E-VOTE-ID 2016 Formerly known as EVOTE and VoteID 18 – 21 October 2016 Bregenz, Austria http://www.e-vote-id.org/2016 This conference aims – in continuation of the tradition established by the EVOTE and VoteID conferences – to become a leading international event for electronic voting experts from all over the world. E-VOTE-ID is an annual meeting formed by merging EVOTE and VoteID. The conference will take place the first time in the new format in October 2016. One of its major objectives is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary and open discussion of all issues relating to electronic voting. Cumulatively, since 2004 more than 750 experts from 35+ countries in six continents have attended this conference to discuss electronic voting and related topics. The aim of the conference is to bring together electronic voting specialists working in academia, politics, government and industry in order to discuss various aspects of all forms of electronic voting (including, but not limited, to polling stations, kiosks, ballot scanners and remote voting by electronic means) in three conference tracks and a PhD colloquium. Conference Tracks and PhD Colloquium Track on Security, Usability, and Technical Issues Design, analysis, formal modeling or research implementation of: – Electronic voting protocols and systems; – Voter identification and authentication; – Ballot secrecy, receipt-freeness and coercion resistance; – Election verification including end-to-end verifiability and risk limiting audits; – Requirements; – Human aspects of verifiable elections; – Evaluation and certification, including international security standards, e.g. Common Criteria or ITSEC; – Or any other security issues relevant to electronic voting. Track on Administrative, Legal, Political, and Social Issues – Discuss legal, political and social issues of electronic voting implementations, ideally employing case study methodology; – Analyze the interrelationship with, and the effects of electronic voting on democratic institutions and processes; – Assess the cultural impact of electronic voting on institutions, behaviours and attitudes of the Digital Era; – Discuss the administrative, legal, political and social risks of electronic voting; – How to draft electronic voting legislations; – Public administrations and the implementation of electronic voting; – Understandability, transparency, and trust issues in electronic voting; – Data protection issues; – Public interests vs. PPP (public private partnerships). Track on Election and Practical Experiences – Review developments in the area of applied electronic voting technologies employed at voter identification/authentication, vote casting, and/or ballot processing; – Report on experiences with electronic voting or the preparation thereof (including project progress reports, case law, court decisions, legislative steps, public and political debates, election outcomes, etc.) Experience reports need not contain original research, but must be an accurate, complete and, where applicable, evidence-based account of the deployment. Submissions will be judged on quality of the system or of the analysis, and the applicability of the results to other democracies. PhD Colloquium The colloquium continues the tradition of PhD workshops on e-voting. Since 2006 the PhD seminars have focused on various aspects of e-voting including technical aspects, legal challenges, identity management, verifiability of the vote, etc. The workshops took place in various locations in Austria, Catalonia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The goal of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of space for discussion and initiating collaboration based on presentations by attendees. What makes this colloquium special is that it is truly interdisciplinary, where PhD students from legal backgrounds are joined by PhD students with computer science and cryptography backgrounds and by social scientists. Master students in e-voting and related areas are also welcome to participate. Each interested participant should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) of some two pages length using the conference platform. Format of the Conference The format of the main conference is a three-day meeting. The PhD colloquium takes places on the day before the main conference begins. No parallel sessions will be held, and sufficient space will be given for informal communication. Paper Submission Paper submissions can be in two formats – either as a full paper or an abstract. – Full paper submissions (up to max 16 pages, including abstract, figures, bibliography); – Abstract submissions (2 pages, roughly 1,200 words). LNCS style has to be used (see the Springer guidelines at http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) All submissions will be subject to double-blind review. Submissions must not substantially duplicate work that any of the authors has published elsewhere or has submitted in parallel to any other conference or workshop with proceedings. Submissions should be anonymous, with no author names, affiliations, acknowledgement or obvious references. Each submission should have a contact author who should provide full contact information. At least one author of each accepted paper will be required to present the work at the conference. Submissions are to be made using the Easychair conference system at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=evoteid2016, which serves as the online system for the review process. During submission, please select the appropriate track or the PhD colloquium. Track chairs reserve the right to re-assign papers to other tracks in case of better fit based on reviewer feedback, and in coordination with other track chairs. If you think that one or more of the programme committee members could have a conflict of interest with your submission, please let the general chairs know at conference-chairs@e-voteid. org. We will in turn make adjustments to the easychair settings so that the respective member/s is/are not involved in the review process. In addition, programme committee members will be required to indicate potential conflict of interest with papers during reviewing phase/paper bidding. Key Dates Deadline for submission of papers and abstracts: 27 May 2016 (hard deadline, no extension) Review Deadline: 1 July 2016 Deadline for PhD Colloquium submissions: 1 July 2016 Notification of acceptance for all tracks: 11 July 2016 Deadline for resubmission of conditionally accepted papers: 12 August 2016 Deadline for camera-ready paper submissions: 26 August 2016 Deadline for system description for demonstration session: 30 September 2016 Publication The conference proceedings will be available at the time of the conference. Full papers accepted for the tracks on technical as well as administrative, legal, political and social issues will be published in Springer LNCS. All other accepted publications, including full papers in the election experience track, accepted abstracts in any of the tracks, and those from PhD colloquium submissions will be published in proceedings with TUT press. The proceedings will also be made available under open access on the E-Vote-ID non-commercial archival repository, and authors will be required to provide their copies of accepted papers for this purpose. Venue The conference will be held in the beautiful Renaissance castle of Hofen at Lochau/Bregenz on the shores of Lake Constance in Austria. On the evening of 18 October a welcome reception for all conference participants will be organized in castle Hofen, where also the conference dinner on 20 October will take place and feature the traditional “cheese road”. Voting System Demonstrations We also invite demonstrations of electronic voting systems, to be presented in an open session on Tuesday 18 October during the welcome reception. Participation is open to all conference participants, but we request a one-page summary by 1 October describing the system’s requirements and properties, such as: – whether the system is intended for use in controlled (i.e. in polling stations) or uncontrolled environments (i.e. remotely via the Internet or in kiosks); – which types of elections it accommodates; – whether it addresses the needs of voters with disabilities; – what sort of verifiability it provides; – the extent to which it guarantees vote privacy; – whether it has been deployed in a real election; – where to go for more information. Dear AoIR-ers, The discussion of snapchat and its (lack of) persistence is a great opportunity to update you about the Persistent Conversation minitrack at HICSS. I think it will interest many of you. Details below. ________ The Persistent Conversation minitrack at HICSS is back. We invite you to submit your work to the upcoming 50th anniversary HICSS. The CFP is here: [1]http://www.hicss.org/#!persistent-conversation/c236g ABOUT THE MINITRACK: A significant consequence of communication technologies is that conversations are no longer ephemeral and volatile. Most conversations mediated by technology leave a persistent record and become persistent conversations. This persistence transforms the essence of conversation, and it is the focus of extensive academic and applied research. The persistent conversation minitrack is the home of this research at HICSS. Persistent conversations are being created using text, audio, images, and video, and they are a part of every aspect of life: From the Cluetrain Manifesto's "markets are conversations", through Robin Dunbar's conversations as devices for social grooming, conversations are at the heart of every human activity. Accordingly, the minitrack is open to research on persistent conversation from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including Communication, Management, Education, Computer Science, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, Linguistics, Law, and the like. As noted by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring, who established the Persistent Conversation minitrack at HICSS in 1999, the persistent trace frees conversations from the lock-step synchrony of face-to-face talk. It allows to dramatically scale the number of participants within a single discussion and to distribute an interaction over geographies, time zones, and cultures. Human and machine access to those digital traces enables a wide set of prisms and analyses, leading to novel insights into the numerous forms of human activity. At the same time, the persistence of human communication imposes a new set of challenges. For example, what mechanisms perform the role of the ephemeral social cues of face-to-face conversation? What are the ethical consequences of the creation of potentially permanent records in terms of privacy, accountability, and the right to be forgotten? In addition, claims have been made about the loss of intimacy, depth, and quality of human communication when it is carried out digitally, especially in the case of massive open communication. The aim of this minitrack is to bring together researchers and innovators to explore digitally persistent conversation and its implications for learning, commercial transactions, entertainment, news, politics, and other forms of human interaction; to raise new socio-technical, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. Examples of appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: - Innovation in digital conversational practice: turn-taking, threading, and other structural features of CMC - The dynamics and analysis of large scale conversation systems (e.g., MOOCs and big data applications) - Methods for analyzing persistent conversation - Studies of virtual communities or other sites of digital conversation - The role of persistent conversation in knowledge management - The role of persistent conversation in organizational dynamics - Domain specific applications, opportunities and challenges of persistent conversations (e.g., in education, healthcare, social movements, government, citizen participation) - Conversation visualization, and visual cues - The role of listeners, lurkers, and silent interactions - Social presence and the persistence of an attributed user's identity The minitrack was launched in 1999 by Susan Herring and Tom Erickson, and was led by them until 2010. For details of the rich history of this minitrack and the accepted papers see Tom Erickson's page at: [2]http://tomeri.org/HICSS_PC_History.html The submission deadline is June 15.
