Second call for papers - Charting the Digital: Play, Discourse, Disruption - DL 25 March
by Alex Gekker 04 Apr '16

04 Apr '16

8-9 October 2016, Venice (Italy) http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/international/world/venice/location/ Organised by the ERC funded Charting the Digital team: Sybille Lammes (Principal Investigator), Chris Perkins (Senior Research Fellow), Sam Hind (PhD candidate), Alex Gekker (PhD candidate) and Clancy Wilmott (PhD candidate and Research Fellow). ____ [Download PDF Here <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15825733/UpdatedDisseminationProjectCFP…> ] After receiving initial submissions, we are now re-issuing a track-specific call to better accommodate the emergent themes of the conference. Please see below for the original CFP and possible range of topics. Submission is possible via one of the following formats/methods: - Presentation abstract of up to 500 words (including keywords). - Full papers of up to 6000 words. We are planning to publish a conference proceedings, in which both formats may be included. Submissions of full papers is encouraged, as in addition to conference proceedings, select papers will also be considered for a special issue journal dedicated to playful and digital cartographies. However, submitting a full paper does not also automatically guarantee journal acceptance which will be conducted through a double blind peer-review process. When submitting, please indicate to which of the following tracks your talk or paper is intended: 1. Maps make societies, societies make maps 2. Maps make cities, cities make maps 3. Maps make manoeuvres, manoeuvres make maps Abstract deadline: 25 March 2016 Notification of acceptance: 15 April 2016 Full paper submission (optional): 15 June 2016 Please send to: chartingthedigital(a)gmail.com ===== Original CfP Whether a navigation device that adjusts its route-display according to where the driver chooses to go, or a map in a computer game that is co-produced by players’ input, digital mapping has transformed our daily lives and how we engage with and shape our worlds. During this final conference of the ERC project Charting the Digital we will share and discuss what this transformation means. Over the last 4 years the Charting team has interrogated what this shift entails, taking on board new developments in the field as well as novel technological possibilities. This has encompassed the deployment of theoretical and methodological frameworks in order to analyse a broad spectrum of digital mapping applications, platforms and devices - from the use of mobile apps such as Google/Apple Maps, Citymapper, Ingress, TripAdvisor, Waze and many more to revolutionary platforms like Google Earth and OSM and devices from smartphones and watches to fitness trackers. Using an interdisciplinary approach we have examined digital maps in relation to each other, to ‘traditional’ non-digital cartographies and to other media forms concerned with mapping and navigation. In so doing we have expanded concepts of navigational interfaces; play, playfulness and playful mapping; casual politics; cartographic reason and logic; and mapping experimentation, risk and failure. Now it is time to set up the next stage of this inquiry. Through discussion with scholars whose ideas influence, challenge or resonate with our work, we wish to open the question of what digital mapping is, has become, or could become in the future. ____ We are interested in a variety of themes, which include, but are not limited to: Playful cartography - videogames and maps - minimaps, player representation, post-colonialism - location-based games - pervasive games with/out maps - mapping as play, play as mapping: the relations between game maps and physical movement - actions/activities/manoeuvres - situationism and pyscho-geography - cheating Mapping and discourse - systems of thought - interoperable logics - rationalism - authority - transformations - transplantations - abstraction and formalisation - cartographic reason - maps and culture Performative mapping - embodiment - materiality - new technologies - new vocabularies - imaginaries - spatialities - limits to representation - temporality (immediacy, ephemerality, (a)synchronicities) Big data, small data, ‘sweaty’ data in digital mapping practices - empirical/ethical challenges - ‘offline’ to ‘online’ articulation - visualisation: the transformation from data to map (layering, inscription) - cartographic politics of big data - issues of representation/scale - applicability of big data metaphors (‘fumes’, ‘sweat’, stacks etc.) Disruptive cartographies - tactical/strategic/logistic - interrelation between disruption, disobedience, disorientation and dislocation - risk and excess (and play) - cartographies of care - autonomous mapping practices - ‘disruption’ as innovation (critique of) - post-colonial mapping - new epistemologies/ways of mapping/unmapping - hacking, hacker culture and crypto-politics - failure (systemic, glitches, inter-active/haptic, capture/collect, privacy/crypto concerns, as productive/non-binary, entrepreneurial/motivational discourse) Mapping methods - in pedagogy - design and making - conceptual frameworks (situatedness, moments, traces, instantiations, models etc.) - playful mapping as method - interdisciplinarity - mobile methods & fieldwork Future Maps and future mapping - self-driving cars and mapping - predictive maps and crisis maps - embodied, sensory maps/wearable technology - personalised maps - ‘dumb’ phones, un-mapping and non-maps We invite contributions from methodological, theoretical and practical vantage points, and are particularly interested in bringing together a wide range of approaches, from junior and senior researchers, and from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Thank you in advance, The Charting the Digital team

Applications now open for DH2016 Expert Workshop: Beyond The Basics: What Next For Crowdsourcing?
by Mia 31 Mar '16

31 Mar '16

DH2016 Expert Workshop: Beyond The Basics: What Next For Crowdsourcing? Applications are now open for an expert workshop to be held in Kraków, Poland, on 12 July 2016, 9:30am - 4:00pm, as part of the Digital Humanities 2016 conference (http://dh2016.adho.org/) We welcome applications from all, but please note that we will aim balance expertise, disciplinary backgrounds, experience with different types of projects, and institutional and project affiliations when finalising our list of participants. This workshop is not suitable for beginners. Participants should have some practical knowledge of running crowdsourcing projects or expertise in human computation, machine learning or other relevant topics. You can apply to attend at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1l05Rba3EqMyy-X4UVmU9z7hQ-jlK2x2kLGvNtJfgtg… Beyond The Basics: What Next For Crowdsourcing? Crowdsourcing - asking the public to help with inherently rewarding tasks that contribute to a shared, significant goal or research interest related to cultural heritage collections or knowledge - is reasonably well established in the humanities and cultural heritage sector. The success of projects such as Transcribe Bentham, Old Weather and the Smithsonian Transcription Center in processing content and engaging participants, and the subsequent development of crowdsourcing platforms that make launching a project easier, have increased interest in this area. While emerging best practices have been documented in a growing body of scholarship, including a recent report from the Crowd Consortium for Libraries and Archives symposium, this workshop looks to the next 5 - 10 years of crowdsourcing in the humanities, the sciences and in cultural heritage. The workshop will gather international experts and senior project staff to document the lessons to be learnt from projects to date and to discuss issues we expect to be important in the future. Topics for discussion will be grouped by participants in an unconference-style opening session in which topics are proposed and voted on by participants. They are likely to include the following: Public humanities, education and audiences: The use of crowdsourcing in formal education Designing research questions that encourage participation and create space for informal education, the social production of knowledge and collaborative problem solving The intersection of crowdsourcing, public humanities and engagement with cultural heritage and academic goals Resolving tensions between encouraging participants to follow opportunities for informal learning and skills development, and focusing on project productivity Organisational and project management issues: Collaborative partnerships/funding to develop community platform(s) based on open source software The state of focused research into interface design, engagement methods, and end-user impact studies Design tensions between techniques that can improve the productivity of projects (such as handwritten text recognition and algorithmic classification) and optimising the user experience Workflows for crowdsourced data and the ingestion of crowdsourced data into collections management systems Challenges to institutional and expert authority The compromises, pros and cons involved in specifying and selecting crowdsourcing software and platforms The impact of crowdsourcing on organisational structures and resources Inter-institutional cooperation or competition for crowdsourcing participants Future challenges: The integration of machine learning and other computational techniques with human computation Lessons to be learnt from the long histories of grassroots and community history projects Sharing lessons learnt and planning peer outreach to ensure that academics and cultural heritage professionals can benefit from collective best practice The ethics of new and emerging forms of crowdsourcing The timetable will include a brief round of introductions, a shared agenda-setting exercise, four or so discussion sessions, and a final session for closing remarks and to agree next steps. The discussion and emergent guidelines documented during the workshop would help future projects benefit from the collective experiences of participants. Outcomes from the workshop might include a whitepaper and/or the further development of or support for a peer network for humanities crowdsourcing. The workshop is organised by Mia Ridge (British Library), Meghan Ferriter (Smithsonian Transcription Centre), Christy Henshaw (Wellcome Library) and Ben Brumfield (FromThePage). For more information, please contact Ben @benwbrum We anticipate accepting 30 participants. You can apply to attend at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1l05Rba3EqMyy-X4UVmU9z7hQ-jlK2x2kLGvNtJfgtg… On notification of acceptance, participants should register via the DH2016 website. Reminder special collection of Social Media + Society on Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 31 Mar '16

31 Mar '16

Dear colleagues, Apologies for cross-posting, this is a kind reminder there are 2 weeks left to submit an abstract for a guest-edited special collection of Social Media + Society on Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe. With best regards, Koen Leurs & Kevin Smets ****** *Call for papers: Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe, * * Special collection of /Social Media + Society/, edited by Koen Leurs and Kevin Smets* *//* While it is increasingly observable that forced migration and digital connectivity are intertwined, there is a need for more in-depth, critical research into this topic, especially in the context of Europe. With this special collection of /Social Media + Society/, a high standing, peer reviewed, open-access journal published by Sage, we seek to bring together cutting-edge research on forced migration in(to) Europe and the way in which digital technologies and digital connectivity and in particular social media play a role in the lives of forced migrants. The collection aims not only to present empirical evidence for discussions about forced migration and digital connectivity, but also to offer new theoretical insights on the issue. Approaching forced migration as a complex societal, political and cultural phenomenon, we seek to consider different aspects of digital connectivity, such as the use of social media by migrants, activists and trolls, issues of affectivity, representation, materiality, mobility, solidarity, political economy and the communication industry, as well questions related to gender, race, sexuality, nation, class, geography and religion; identity; diaspora; media literacy; policy; legislation and human rights. The label forced migrants includes here asylum seekers, refugees, forced migrants, stranded migrants, left-behind children and child migrants as well internally displaced populations amongst others. We welcome scholars from the (digital) humanities and (computational) social sciences. Theoretical perspectives may include but are not limited to communication, media and cultural studies, HCI, postcolonial, feminist, critical race and intersectional approaches, critical ICT4D, and political economy. Empirical perspectives may include but are not limited to (virtual) ethnography, big data, digital methods, fieldwork, action-research, creative methods, mixed-methods, and survey-research. *//* Contributions may address the following topics: * connected migrants in Europe * social media use in refugee camps and asylum seeker centres * forced migration and selfie citizenship * solidarity * transnational communication and affectivity * information scarcity * encapsulation & cosmopolitanization * differences and similarities different migrant groups (class, gender, race, age, generation, location) * digital migrant identities, self-representations and alternative migrant cartographies * migrant recruitment and radicalization online * digital deportability and algorithmic sorting * surveillance and tracking * migrant networked learning * migrant acculturation online * trolling, extremism and anti-migration protest online * political economy of migrant connectivity * digital communication rights * rethinking communication rights in Fortress Europe * securitization versus human rights: recentering European policy and legislation * ethical considerations and methodological reflections * digital diasporas * postcolonial digital humanities *//* Please send a 1-page (ca. 500 words) abstract outlining the main objectives of your paper as well as its empirical/theoretical contributions to the topic of forced migration and digital connectivity to both k.h.a.leurs(a)uu.nl<mailto:k.h.a.leurs@uu.nl> <mailto:k.h.a.leurs@uu.nl> and kevin.smets(a)uantwerpen.be<mailto:kevin.smets@uantwerpen.be> <mailto:kevin.smets@uantwerpen.be> by 15 April 2016. Decisions by the editors to solicit full papers will be made in May 2016. The deadline for submitting full papers (8000 words all inclusive) is 7 December 2016. The contributions will be published as a Special Collection of the online, open-access, peer-reviewed journal /Social Media + Society/, published by Sage and edited by Prof. Zizi Papacharissi (http://sms.sagepub.com<http://sms.sagepub.com/> <http://sms.sagepub.com/><http://sms.sagepub.com/%3E <http://sms.sagepub.com/%3E%3Chttp://sms.sagepub.com/%3E>> <http://sms.sagepub.com/%3E%3Chttp://sms.sagepub.com/%3E%3E> <http://sms.sagepub.com/%3E%3Chttp://sms.sagepub.com/%3E%3E%3E>). Please contact the guest editors if you have any questions about this call for papers. Informal inquiries about possible topics, themes and proposals are also welcomed. The guest editors welcome contributions by established scholars as well as early career researchers. *The special collection is developed in tandem with two events:* 1) the symposium “Connected migrants: encapsulation or cosmopolitanism?” (http://www.knaw.nl/connected-migrants) taking place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 14-16 December 2016. The symposium is financed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. 2) two panels on “Forced migration and digital connectivity in(to) Europe”, to be submitted to the Association of Internet Research annual conference, to be held in Berlin, Germany from 5-8 October, 2016. *Key dates* -15 April 2016: 1-page abstract + 150 word bio -May 2016: invitations for full papers after selection by guest editors -7 December 2016: first version of full papers (8000 words all inclusive) -Late 2017: anticipated publication date *Rationale* Daily, Europeans witness Syrian asylum seekers arriving on the beaches of Greek and Southern-Italian islands. TV news footage shows how freshly arrived migrants use smartphones to take selfies or use Skype to happily announce their safe arrival on European soil to loved ones elsewhere. In response, prejudicial discourses about migrants have centered on smartphones; for example, anti-immigrant politicians and various social media memes frame refugees who own ‘luxury’ smartphones as less deserving of asylum. Forced migrants, who are digitally connected, embody Europe’s Janus-faced character in an age when advanced technologies are celebrated for increasing communication speed and economic prosperity. As a result of different conflicts worldwide, forced migration has become a major challenge for Europe. The enormous death toll of migrants at Europe’s borders, the reintroduction of border controls within the Schengen Area, and the violence and hostility towards refugees and asylum seekers in several European countries published across various social media platforms all attest to the way in which the current influx of forced migrants is overturning European society and political structures. At the same time mainstream media have devoted significant attention to the situation of refugees along their migration routes in(to) Europe. Interestingly, these instances often included digital technologies as central anchoring points in the lives of refugees. Detailed reports were made of refugees using smartphones, keeping in touch with their relatives, or documenting their journey through social media. Other accounts, albeit less frequently, focused on the ways in which governments seek to deal with forced migration via digital technologies, for instance by making use of GPS tracking in smartphones, or by setting up online deterrence campaigns to discourage refugees to migrant to specific countries. *About the guest-editors* Koen Leurs is Assistant Professor in Gender and Postcolonial studies at the Graduate Gender Program, Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD in 2012. He is a feminist internet researcher interested in multiculturalism, race, migration, diaspora and youth culture using mixed methods and ethnography. He has just completed a 2 year EU funded Marie Curie research project titled /Urban Politics of London Youth Analyzed Digitally/, at the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK. From February 2016 onwards he will work on a 3-year Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research funded research project ‘Young connected migrants. Comparing digital practices of young asylum seekers and expatriates in the Netherlands’. See www.koenleurs.net <http://www.koenleurs.net/>. Kevin Smets is assistant professor in Communication Studies at the Free University of Brussels, and a postdoctoral fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders. He obtained his PhD in Film Studies and Visual Culture at the University of Antwerp in 2013. He has published widely on diasporic media cultures, particularly film cultures, in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
