G'day ! This may be of interest to some of you: > -----Original Message----- > From: Axel Bruns [mailto:editor@media-culture.org.au] > Sent: Friday, 5 December 2014 15:25 > Subject: [MCJ] CFP: M/C Journal 'technique' Issue (article deadline: 27 Feb. > 2015) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 5 Dec. 2014 M/C - Media and Culture http://www.media-culture.org.au/ is calling for contributors to the 'technique' issue of M/C Journal http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ M/C Journal is inviting new contributors. Founded in 1998, M/C is a crossover journal between the popular and the academic, and a blind- and peer-reviewed journal. Our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ provides open access to all past issues. To find out how and in what format to contribute your work, visit http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/about/submissions. Call for Papers: 'technique' Edited by Adam Muir and Daniel Hourigan In this issue we are interested in technique, crafting, making, hacking - as these ideas relate to the knowledge or know-how that informs the social contexts that transform a technology into a medium of expression. We are seeking contributions which challenge, augment and productively reposition the notion of technique(s) as it relates to: social praxis involving knowledge that breaches the purely technical; techne and/or crafting that masters, re-purposes, or hacks media broadly conceived; the negotiations with technology that produce new aesthetic, social and political forms; other forms of knowing-and-doing that are intellectually fecund. Areas for consideration may include: * political dimensions of makers / hackers * psychic dimensions of technology: techne, knowledge, know-how * economy of code as interface to technology * critique of technological production * media praxis * communities of crafting * political economy of "new" media * cultural techniques * forgotten histories of technology/media * techniques of control as they relate to knowledge or process Such areas may manifest as questions such as: * what are the cultural politics of craft and technology? * where does technique rupture technology or media? * why does understanding techniques make a difference in contemporary life? * how does mastery of techniques re-imagine and interrupt know-how? * does contemporary understanding of specific techniques reveal alternative histories? Prospective contributors should email an abstract of 100-250 words and a brief biography to the issue editors. Abstracts should include the article title and should describe your research question, approach, and argument. Biographies should be about three sentences (maximum 75 words) and should include your institutional affiliation and research interests. Articles should be 3000 words (plus bibliography). All articles will be refereed and must adhere to MLA style (6th edition). Please send any enquiries to technique(a)journal.media-culture.org.au. Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly - special issue CFP "Information access and control in an age of Big Data"
by Louisa Shu Ying Ha 04 Dec '14

04 Dec '14

Dear AOIRs: You are encouraged to submit a paper to this JMCQ special issue: Call for Papers for a Special Issue Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly Information Access and Control in an Age of Big Data Submission Deadline for Papers: June 1, 2015 Guest Editors Edward L. Carter, J.D. LL.M., Associate Professor, Brigham Young University Laurie Thomas Lee, Ph.D., Professor, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Overview In a keynote address at a 1996 conference on information policy sponsored by the U.S. government, scholar and analyst William J. Drake said, “The new information infrastructure can and should be designed to balance the needs of all parties with direct stakes in it: large corporate suppliers and users, the public sector, the non-commercial sector, small and large businesses, and individual users.”[1] However, Drake warned that conflicting interests and competing international models of information access and control could impede the achievement of this vision. He suggested that use patterns and government regulation should be monitored and managed as technological advances caused changes in mass communication. Given the impact of Big Data and technological advances in the nearly 20 years since Drake’s comment, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly proposes to publish a special issue on “Information Access and Control in an Age of Big Data.” The editorial team of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly believes this research has the potential to make an important contribution to the literature appraising the current state of information and communication technology, consumer and audience behavior, and policy and law, as well as to provide a platform for development of future research in journalism and mass communication. Papers We invite contributions to a special issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly that will address access to and control of information in an age of Big Data. We encourage submissions that approach this topic from an inclusive range of fields and research methodologies within journalism and mass communication and also from other disciplines, with a focus on the implications of the topic to media and society. Papers may offer insights about technological, behavioral, policy, legal and other issues. Possible topics might include, among others, the so-called right to be forgotten on the Internet; social media and privacy; the implications of Big Data for journalism and mass communication; government and corporate surveillance; technology solutions to protect confidentiality in reporter-source relationships; access by news media and other individuals to digital records of government and other institutions; the response of journalism, public relations and advertising to challenges and opportunities in the current environment; search engine optimization and reputation management; intellectual property and freedom of expression; data protection; and the right of publicity. This special issue lends itself to research from a variety of cultural and international perspectives, and therefore papers with international and intercultural approaches are particularly encouraged. We welcome both qualitative and quantitative approaches to the topic. Details of Paper Content, Length, and Due Date Papers will undergo blind peer review. Those selected for publication will then enter the editorial publication process, resulting in publication online in January 2016 and in print in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly in summer 2016. The deadline for full paper submissions is June 1, 2015 at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jmcq. Authors are requested to submit manuscripts in APA Style, 6th Edition. Manuscripts in other citation styles will be considered in initial review. Other manuscript submission details for Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly are available at http://www.sagepub.com/journals/Journal202061/manuscriptSubmission. Re: [Air-L] Risk awareness and aversion in online spaces
by Ian O'Byrne 03 Dec '14

Hi, Thanks for sharing this. It makes me think about how we construct our identity online, in the light of this online trolling behavior that we sometimes see. I'm also concerned about these same practices as data and freedoms are under attack as well. Our research was trying to understand how to empower educators...and as a result their students as they work/play in these spaces. Thanks again. I'll grab the book. :) -Ian On Sun, Nov 30, 2014, 9:44 AM Research <researchtexts(a)gmail.com> wrote: > There is a new Canadian book that talks about how online abuse -- > tormenting, bullying, stalking, revenge porn, predation -- is driving > different types of people off the Internet. > Extreme Mean: Trolls, > Bullies and Predators > Online. CFP: Legal and Technical Issues in Cloud Computing (CLaw)
by Jat Singh 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

=========================================================== CLaw: IEEE 1st International Workshop on Legal and Technical Issues in Cloud Computing http://www.claw-workshop.org in conjunction with IC2E 2015: IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering 12 March 2015 http://conferences.computer.org/IC2E/2015/ =========================================================== *** This workshop brings together legal and technical practitioners to explore technical solutions to legal problems, and to provide a legal framework for new emerging patterns in cloud computing. *** =========================================================== The rapid emergence and uptake of cloud computing services brings a number of legal concerns. Existing (and proposed) regulatory and governance regimes place obligations on those who manage (process, use and collect) data. The end-users of applications provisioned in the cloud also have certain rights that must be respected: tenants and cloud providers bear various degrees of responsibility, which must be properly managed. From a technical perspective, these issues concern the capacity for management: the mechanisms that enable control and compliance within cloud services. While cloud computing has been a revolution in IT provisioning, concerns of interaction with law and policy are now gaining prominence. Recent discussion has concerned issues of locality, including where data physically resides and/or is processed (regional clouds), and the services/information available within a locale (such as the "right to be forgotten"). Further, despite the surge toward the cloud in many commercial contexts, some sectors are hesitant in adopting cloud services due to a mismatch between the legal environment and the technology. Such issues will adversely impact new directions such as the green cloud or incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) through "Fog". Potential topics include, but are not limited to: * Privacy and security in cloud services * Application of cloud computing in regulated sectors * Encryption, security and responsibility * Audit and proof of compliance * Regional cloud initiatives (e.g. EU-only cloud), and other data geographical location concerns * Internet of Things: threats, legal and compliance concerns of 'fog' computing. * Crime, malware and spam proliferation within cloud computing * Compatibility issues between regulation and technical reality * Technical enforcement of legal regulations * The right to be forgotten Important Dates: * Paper submission: **Extended: 14 December 2014 23:59 GMT-12** * Author notification: Mid Jan 2015 * Final camera ready: 31 Jan 2015 * Workshop date: 14 March 2015 Submission: We invite authors to submit papers relating legal and technical aspects of cloud computing. Application-specific papers are welcome (healthcare, IoT, etc). Fully implemented and evaluated systems are not essential. Ideally, the output of this first workshop on legal and technical issues will influence both regulators and service providers. Submissions must be in electronic format submitted through this EasyChair link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=claw2015. Papers should not exceed 6 pages in IEEE format (single-spaced 2-column text using 10-point size type on A4 paper, templates available). Submissions will be peer reviewed, and for each accepted paper, at least one author is required to register and present the paper at the workshop. All accepted papers will be published in IEEE Xplore. =========================================================== -------------------------------------- Dr. Jatinder Singh Senior Research Associate Computer Laboratory University of Cambridge Office: +44 (0)1223 763690 http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~js573

Vince Miller on his forthcoming book about presence, crisis and culture (CAMRI seminar 10/12)
by Christian Fuchs 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

The Crisis of Presence in Contemporary Culture Vince Miller (Univ of Kent) Wed, Dec 10 14:00 UNiv of Westminster Harrow Campus Room A7.01 http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/research-seminars/the-crisis-of-presence… Registration: e-mail to christian.fuchs(a)uti.at In this presentation, Vince Miller problematises the notion of presence within a contemporary culture in which social life is increasingly lived and experienced through networked digital communication technologies alongside the physical presence of co-present bodies. Using the work of Heidegger, Levinas, Bauman, Rotman (and others), he suggests that the increasing use of these technologies and our increasing presence in online environments challenges our tendencies to ground moral and ethical behaviours in face-to-face or materially co-present contexts. Instead, the mediated presences we can achieve amplify our cultural tendency to objectify the social world and weaken our sense of moral and ethical responsibility to others. Such a disjuncture manifests itself in a number of popular contemporary concerns over privacy, ‘anti-social’ behaviour, and the problems of free speech and inappropriate disclosure. Vince Miller will suggest that the solution of overcoming such problems lies not in increasing regulation, but in more scrutiny paid to the software architecture of social media as the medium by which humans are ‘made present’ online, as well as an expansion of the notion of being/presence to include virtual data/presences, so that these may gain ‘ethical weight’. Vincent Miller is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Cultural Studies at the University of Kent, where he has research interests in digital culture and urban sociology. He is author of ‘Understanding Digital Culture’ (Sage) and is currently writing ‘The Crisis of Presence in Contemporary Culture: Ethics, Privacy and Disclosure in Mediated Social Life’, also for Sage.
