CFP: Convergence: Special themed issue Vol 22, no 3 (August 2016) Connected Viewing: Multi-Platform Media in the Digital Era Guest Editors: Jennifer Holt and Karen Petruska This special issue aims to bring together researchers from film, television, internet, and game studies to examine evolving trends in connected viewing, an evolution in how screen media is created, circulated, and consumed. Specifically referring to a multi-platform entertainment experience, connected viewing also relates to a larger trend across the media industries to integrate digital technology and socially networked communication with traditional screen media practices. This special issue will explore connected viewing as a crucial frame through which we can understand contemporary media in the digital era. Connected viewing is more than digital distribution, for it encapsulates the broader ecosystem in which digital distribution is rendered possible and new forms of user engagement take shape. Connected viewing is as much about the aesthetic and social experience of second-screen media as it is about the intermediaries that deliver content to mobile devices and the gatekeepers that regulate access. It also extends to those firms and individuals operating “outside” of the mainstream who are looking to create innovative connections to the digital, global, and mobile audience. This call for papers invites contributions that focus on the evolving economics, technologies, regulations, texts, and audience practices of connected viewing. Possible topics may include digital distribution technologies and platforms; global markets and audiences; the economics of connected viewing; web series and transmedia content; data collection and privacy; cloud technologies and internet infrastructure; network neutrality, internet governance, and other regulatory issues; audience engagement and fandom. Contributions on the following questions are welcome, but we are open to any substantive inquiry: **What are the historical continuities that limit or expand the landscape for digital media innovations? **Legacy companies today compete not only with each other but also with new entrants like Netflix and Amazon. How is the struggle between these companies transforming traditional media practices? **What innovations has connected viewing brought to the production and circulation of content, especially across platforms? How has this affected creative labor? **What are the emerging business models driving connected viewing, and how might these impact audience practices and priorities (i.e. in terms of digital divides, affordable content, privacy protections, etc.)? **What are the most dynamic connected viewing developments in Latin American, Asian, European, or emerging economic markets? **Do “independent” companies have a competitive advantage in the connected viewing market for either film, TV, or games? **What audiences have the advances of connected viewing left behind, particularly considering racial, gender, class, and age differences? Alternatively, how have audiences pushed connected viewing practices forward in ways media companies have not? **How is connected viewing transforming ideals of the public sphere and community life? Research articles will be in the range of 6,000-8,000 words and all submissions should be formatted in the SAGE Harvard reference style. The format is that of a data sprint, with hands-on work on media monitoring with data analytics, and a Mini-conference, where PhD candidates, motivated scholars and advanced graduate students present short papers on digital methods and new media related topics, and receive feedback from the Amsterdam group of DMI researchers and international participants. Participants need not give a paper at the Mini-conference to attend the Winter School. The focus of this year's Winter School is on how online media monitoring is currently done by non-governmental (NGOs) such as treealerts.org, and it seeks to identify practices that could fill in the notion of critical data analytics. For the occasion we have invited academics to present on the state of the art of online media monitoring by focusing on three areas where there is both innovation as well as repurposing of techniques normally associated with marketing, business intelligence and the work of digital agencies: issue discovery and language placement (who's carrying the conversation), engagement and public fund-raising (when do images and other engagement formats ‘work’?) and crisis communication (who is making the calls when there is a breakdown?). At the Winter School social media analysts and communications specialists from NGOs will present on the state of the art of media monitoring, their current analytical needs and what the Internet can continue to add with respect to new data sources as well as monitoring techniques. We will also ask each of the organizations to show us their dashboards. The first day kicks off with Nathaniel Tkacz from the University of Warwick who will talk about Dashboards and Data Signals <http://blogs.cim.warwick.ac.uk/dashboard/about-2/>, and the desire to control the data deluge. After the the first day of talks as well as dashboard show and tell, the data sprint commences, whereupon the attendees, including analysts, designers and programmers, undertake empirical projects that address the state of the art in NGO online media data analysis. We work on projects that seek to meet the current analytical needs. The week closes with presentations of the outcomes as well as a festive celebration. During the week there is also an evening of talks and a debate with Jimmy Wales <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Wales>, co-founder of Wikipedia, at the nearby Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science <https://www.knaw.nl/en/>. The theme of the 2015 Winter School furthers the analytical collaboration between the Digital Methods Initiative and NGO media analysts, including Soenke Lorenzen of Greenpeace International <http://www.greenpeace.org/>. In preparation for the sprint we also have developed how-to worksheets on New Media Monitoring and Tooling that take as their case studies NGO issue mappings with digital methods. Upon conclusion we aim to compile the Sprint projects from the Winter School, and combine them with the how-to sheets to produce an open access publication on NGO media monitoring. All participants are invited to contribute. Digital Methods Winter School Data Sprint A data sprint is a workshop format for intensive, empirical project work, where analysts, programers, designers and subject matter experts collaborate to output research. This year's data sprint is devoted to new media monitoring with data analytics, and particularly its critical practice. Broadly speaking, media monitoring is understood as the process of reading, watching or listening to the editorial content of media sources on a continuing basis, and then identifying, analyzing and saving materials that contain specific themes, topics, keywords, names, forms or formats. Monitoring the editorial content of news sources including newspapers, magazines, trade journals, TV shows, radio programs and specific websites is by far the most common form of media monitoring, but most organizations increasingly monitor social media online, and its impact on the diffusion of news in all media or in online conversation (including the comment space) more generally. Most companies, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations utilize media monitoring as a tool to study the "meaning of mentions" of their organization, its campaigns and slogans, and gain some sense of the composition of their audiences, and what animates them (or keeps them quiet). During the first day of the data sprint academics studying online media monitoring will present the state of the art of the field, focusing on three areas: issue discovery and issue language placement (who is the carrying the conversation, and which voices are continually elided?), engagement and fundraising communication (how are audiences and funders reacting to so-called 'faces of need' and other formats and calls for engagement?) and crisis communication (when there is a breakdown, who makes the calls?). Representatives from leading NGOs will present to the attendees how they practice online media monitoring, the look of their dashboards and the analytical needs that drive them. What are these experts able to accomplish with the techniques available to them, and which questions remain unanswered? What are the critical media monitoring practices and questions that are specific to NGOs? How to conceptualize and operationalize issue discovery, engagement for fundraising and crisis monitoring? We will ask the NGO communications experts to address these questions. We also will ask them what they think digital methods and issue mapping may add to the outputs of media monitoring. The conversations with the experts will serve as starting points for winter school attendees - including analysts, designers and programmers - to develop into empirical projects that aim to answer research questions, and develop further techniques for media monitoring online.Digital Methods Mini-Conference at the Winter School The annual Digital Methods Mini-Conference at the Winter School, normally a one-day affair, provides the opportunity for digital methods and allied researchers to present short yet complete papers (5,000-7,500 words) and serve as respondents, providing feedback. Often the work presented follows from previous Digital Methods Summer Schools. The mini-conference accepts papers in the general digital methods and allied areas: the hyperlink and other natively digital objects, the website as archived object, web historiographies, search engine critique, Google as globalizing machine, cross-spherical analysis and other approaches to comparative media studies, device cultures, national web studies, Wikipedia as cultural reference, the technicity of (networked) content, post-demographics, platform studies, crawling and scraping, graphing and clouding, and similar. April 8-10 2015 University of Sunderland London Campus, South Quay, London, UK This conference, co-hosted by the Centre for Research in Media and Cultural Studies<http://www.crmcs.sunderland.ac.uk/>, University of Sunderland, and the Onscenity Research Network will take place on April 8-10 2015 at the University of Sunderland London Campus, London, UK http://www.onscenity.org/sexual-cultures-conference-2/ The conference will host several keynote panels, bringing together academics and activists on the topics of: · Sex and disability · Trans* and non-binary activism · Sex worker and stripper activism · Youth, race and sexuality Confirmed Keynote Panelists include: Andrea Cornwall, Jade Fernandez, Kat Gupta, Kate Hardy, Laura Harvey, Alex Iantaffi, Tuppy Owens, Emma Renold, Jessica Ringrose, Nabil Shaban, Jay Stewart. The overriding theme of the conference is the bringing together of academia with activism. Submissions are particularly welcomed from: academics who are also activists, activists who are also academics, academic/activists on the inside and outside of conventional academia, and academics and activists who are working together on projects relating to sexual cultures. The key themes of the conference are: Sex and technology Technologies of all kinds have been central to the ways in which sex is understood and experienced in contemporary societies. We are interested in papers that explore evolving technologies in the presentation of sex through print, photography, film and video to todays online and mobile media; the ways that technologies are increasingly integrated into everyday sex lives; the expansion of sex technologies in toy, doll, machine and robot manufacture, the marketing of drugs such as Viagra and cosmetic technologies such as body modification and genital surgery for enhancing sex; the expansion of sex work and recreation online; sex 2.0 practices, regimes and environments such as porn tubes, sex chat rooms and worlds like Second Life; and the shifting relations between bodies and machines in the present and in predictions of futuresex. Intersecting sex Many of the most important and current debates around sexual identities, practices and cultures in recent years have cohered around intersectionality. Sex is an area in which we particularly see intersections playing out between various forms and systems of oppression discrimination. For example, key debates concern the possibilities for consensual sex and agency within multiple intersecting structures of oppression; the ways in which ‘sexualization’ operates – and is discussed – in gendered, classed, and raced ways; which bodies and identities are considered to have the potential to be sexual or not, and which are regarded as intrinsically hypersexual or pathologically sexual. Papers in this strand will explore intersectional elements of sexual identity, practice, experience and culture, the ways in which academics and/or activists are engaging and intervening in these areas (online and offline), and the key points of tension and conflict that are emerging around these issues. Advising/educating sex Sex advice and education is a key area of concern in relation to sexual cultures. Sex advice and sex education are arenas in which cultural conceptualisations of sex are reproduced and perpetuated, as well as being potential sites for the resisting of dominant cultural understandings and offering alternative possibilities. Sex advice and education occur across various media and diverse professional contexts, including – for example – self-help books, problem pages, websites, online forums, news reporting, TV documentaries, and pornography, as well as school sex ed, youth work, sexual health clinics, sex therapy, sex coaching and sex work. Papers in this strand will explore the kinds ways in which intimacies are being mediated through various forms of sex advice and education, as well as considering the ways in which activists and/or academics are engaging and intervening in these areas (online and offline, in policy and in practice) and the forms of sex advice and education that are emerging from these engagements and interventions. Working sex In recent years sex work has become a potent site for the discussion of labour, commerce and sexual ethics, attracting increased academic attention and public concern. Papers in this strand of the conference will seek to develop our understanding of commercial sex, focus on conceptualizing emerging types of sexual labour, and explore the place of sex work of all kinds in contemporary society. They will ask how an investigation of contemporary forms of sex work and sex as work may shed new light on the study of cultural production, industry, commerce, and notions of commodification and labour. We are also seeking papers which are interested in exploring the connections between work and leisure, work and pleasure, sex work as forms of body and affective labour, and the ethics and politics of sexual labour. We invite proposals for the following: Panels, roundtable discussions, and workshops of up to four presenters/facilitators (1 hour) Papers/interactive events (20 minutes) Short Ignite papers (5 minutes/20 slides) Posters We particularly welcome proposals for non-standard types of presentation which question the academic/activist distinction, such as fish bowl discussions, pecha kucha, creative methods workshops, and interactive workshops. All presenters are requested to make their material accessible to an audience which will include academics, activists, practitioners and community members. Deadline for the submission of proposals is October 31 2014. For all individual papers please submit a 150 word abstract and 150 word biographical note. Please indicate which key theme of the conference your paper belongs to. For panels, workshops and roundtable sessions please submit a 600-800 overview and set of abstracts with 150 word biographical notes. Please indicate which key theme of the conference you want your panel to be considered for. Hi folks, I am excited to announce that we are launching a new MA in Social Technologies here at Arizona State University, starting in Fall 2015. The Masters in Social Technologies (MAST) is a groundbreaking program for students who wish to understand how new technologies affect social and organizational change and to apply that understanding in a variety of professional contexts. Focused on the increasing prominence of social technologies in nearly every facet of contemporary life, MAST is an interdisciplinary degree anchored in social, behavioral, cultural, and design approaches to this new reality. Our faculty members are leading experts in the study of globalization, surveillance, social networking, online activism, computer gaming, networked learning, collective behavior, social media and social change, cultural theory and technology, sport and social media, and the political economy of media. Our flexible curriculum consists of two core courses (Theories of Social Technology and Applied Social Technology), a graduate-level research methods course, a series of elective courses, and a six credit-hour applied project. Working closely with our faculty, students select their coursework and develop a final project appropriate to their educational and vocational goals. Students leave the program with a thorough grounding in social theory and research methods, applied to the social uses of interactive environments, networked technologies, and mobile computing.
