DE-CONSTRUCTING THE SMART CITY, REASSEMBLING URBAN LIFE - Call for Abstract
by Maurizio 24 Nov '14

24 Nov '14

Dear All, first, apologies for cross-posting. Second, I point you a session at the forthcoming IAS-STS Conference on the Smart-City narrative and its deconstruction. You can find details at the bottom of this email. Abstracts should include no more than 250 words, comprising detailed contact information, affiliation and specification of the *session* you are referring to. In this case, *SESSION 17: DE-CONSTRUCTING THE SMART CITY, REASSEMBLING URBAN LIFE.* Abstracts should be sent to Michaela Jahrbacher (sts-conf-graz(a)aau.at ) until *January 15**, 2015* as a *DOC/DOCX-file*. More information about the conference: http://www.ifz.tugraz.at/ias/IAS-STS/Upcoming-Activities/Call-for-Abstracts… Thanks for you attention and I hope to see you in Gratz Best M. *---* *SESSION 17: DE-CONSTRUCTING THE SMART CITY, REASSEMBLING URBAN LIFE* *Michela Cozza, Giusi Orabona, Giacomo Poderi, Maurizio Teli*, Department of Information Engineering and Computer Sciences (DISI), University of Trento, Italy Since nearly a decade, the idea of a “Smart City” strongly emerged and rapidly spread in urban planning, political discourse and academia in general. As any successful term, its widespread adoption has attributed it many meanings, almost overlapping with the idea of having digital technologies distributed in the urban environment. On the one hand, such distribution seems to favour the city management related to the transit, traffic and provision of localized services. On the other hand, it could be interpreted as a program of control of the population by the big corporations of the ICT domain (Greenfield 2013). Nevertheless, we are already witnessing tentative appropriations and applications of the “Smart City” ideal into several specific domains which concern urban life: from transportation to welfare services, from active ageing to energy management. As already noted in one of the first and pivotal works on Smart Cities (Hollands, 2008), this concept is usually vaguely defined, biased towards the ICT dimension of urban developments, and often portrayed with enthusiastic, uncritical and entrepreneurial rhetoric. In summary, the concept of “Smart City” hides urban life behind the (often physical) screens of technological efficiency and monitoring social practices. As described, the picture of the “Smart City” is signed by technological determinism, an ideological commitment privileging the private sector, social polarization as an inevitable by-product, missing concerns with class inequality, inclusion and social justice, and the almost clear neo-liberal attempt to incorporate local communities into the entrepreneurial discourse. Such discourse needs to be de-constructed and re-assembled in order to leave space for a more socially aware, distributed effort, that is actually empowering people more than the powerful actor at the political and economic level. Therefore, we welcome contributions that critically examines the concept of a “Smart City” at one or both of the two following levels. At the theoretical level, where the different dimensions and elements of “Smart City” such as ICT, urban planning, societal challenges, are defined, analysed and discussed in relationship to state-of-the-art developments and their respective domains of application (e.g. energy, mobility). At the empirical and practical level, where the actual efforts of designing, implementing and deploying plans for smart cities are critically described, reviewed or assessed. In particular, we welcome contributions able to point at how the “Smart City” can be de-constructed and re-assembled in a more democratic way, supporting urban life instead of neo-liberal narratives. Ultimately, we welcome contributions that look at the “Smart City” from the viewpoints both of the citizens and professionals: reflections that discuss how citizens’ identity and professional practices take part in the construction of the idea of “smartness” are appreciated.

CFP Extended: Problematizing Cyber Wars
by Vit Sisler 23 Nov '14

23 Nov '14

Problematizing Cyber Wars Call for Papers CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Helga Tawil-Souri Submission deadline: January 31, 2015 (Full Papers) Aim According to military analysts, since the 1991 Gulf War and even more so since the Hezbollah-Israel 2006 war, we have entered a new phase of warfare, in which kinetic and traditional military power are losing importance to symbolic and media power. Perhaps unsurprisingly given a still-widely held Orientalist view in military circles, many such perspectives revolve around wars and conflicts in the ‘Middle East’ or against ‘Islam’ more broadly – taking place in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, Syria, but also on cyber networks and mobile phones. While these claims are of course hyperbole, this special issue of CyberOrient invites articles on questions of how we might define wars in a (new) media-age in the region; whether, why, and how (new) media are increasingly sites of warfare; the relationships between ‘virtual’ and ‘real’ battlespaces. Topics could include the significance of targeting (and bombing) telecommunications and media infrastructures; the use of (new) media as outlets for propaganda during wartime; the mediatization of war and the militarization of media; the role of participatory or social media and mobile communications during and in wars; relationships or differences between official, military, alternative, citizen, and grass-roots (new) media uses during war and conflict; the expanding definition of warzones; commemoration and memorialization of war in a digital age; among others. We welcome submissions from across disciplines and methodological approaches that are empirically and critically grounded. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The aim of the journal is to provide research and theoretical considerations on the representation of Islam and the Middle East, the very areas that used to be styled as an “Orient”, in cyberspace, as well as the impact of the internet and new media in Muslim and Middle Eastern contexts. Submission Articles should be submitted directly to Helga Tawil-Souri (helga(a)nyu.edu) and Vit Sisler (vit.sisler(a)ff.cuni.cz) Article should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including references), and follow the AAA style in referencing and citations. Upon acceptance, articles will be published online with free access in spring 2015. More information can be found here: http://www.cyberorient.net/detail.do?articleId=3682 -- Vit Sisler, Ph.D. Charles University in Prague Faculty of Arts Institute of Information Science and Librarianship New Media Studies http://uisk.jinonice.cuni.cz/sisler/

Call: 5th ICTs and Society-Conference: The Internet and Social Media at a Crossroads: Capitalism or Commonism? Perspectives for Critical Political Economy and Critical Theory.
by Christian Fuchs 21 Nov '14

21 Nov '14

5th ICTs and Society-Conference: The Internet and Social Media at a Crossroads: Capitalism or Commonism? Perspectives for Critical Political Economy and Critical Theory. http://icts-and-society.net/events/5th-icts-and-society-conference/ Part of the ISIS Summit Vienna 2015: Information Society at the Crossroads: Response and Responsibility of the Sciences of Information. Vienna University of Technology. Vienna, Austria June 3-7, 2015. The information society has come with the promise to restore information as a commons. The promise has not yet proven true. Instead, we face trends towards the commercialisation and commoditisation of all information; towards the totalisation of surveillance and the extension of the battlefield to civil society through information warfare; towards disinfotainment overflow; towards a collapse of the technological civilisation itself. The Vienna Summit is a multi-conference and is at the same time the 5th ICTs and Society-Conference: The Internet and Social Media at a Crossroads: Capitalism or Commonism? Perspectives for Critical Political Economy and Critical Theory. Given that the information society and the study of information face a world of crisis today and are at a crossroads, also the future of the Internet and social media are in question. The 5th ICTs and Society Conference therefore wants to focus on the questions: What are the main challenges that the Internet and social media are facing in capitalism today? What potentials for an alternative, commonist Internet are there? What are existing hindrances for such an Internet? What is the relationship of power structures, protest movements, societal developments, struggles, radical reforms, etc. to the Internet? How can critical political economy and critical theory best study the Internet and social media today? Presentations and submissions are organised in the form of 23 panel topics (ICT&S1-ICT&S23; please indicate the panel identification number to which you submit in your submisison): * ICT&S1 The Internet and Critical Theory: What does it mean to study the Internet, social media and society today in a critical way? What are Critical Internet Studies, Critical Political Economy and Critical Theories of Social Media? * ICT&S2 The Internet, Karl Marx, and Marxist Theory: How can classical forms of critical theory and critical political economy – e.g. the works of e.g. Karl Marx, the Frankfurt School, Critical Political Economy of the Media and Communication, Critical and Marxist Cultural Studies, Socialist Feminism, Theories of Imperialism, Raymond Williams’ cultural materialism, etc – be used for understanding the Internet and social media today? * ICT&S3 The Internet, Commodities and Capitalism: What is the role of the Internet and social media in the context of the commodity logic in contemporary capitalism? * ICT&S4 The Political Economy of Online Advertising How can we best critically understand, analyse and combat the role of advertising on the Internet and the role of online advertising in capitalism? What are the problems of online advertising culture? How would a world without advertising and an advertising-free Internet look like? * ICT&S5 The Internet and Power: How do power structures, exploitation, domination, class, digital labour, commodification of the communication commons, ideology, and audience/user commodification, and surveillance shape the Internet and social media? What is the relationship of exploitation and domination on the Internet? * ICT&S6 Raymond Williams’ Cultural Materialism and the Internet: How can we use theoretical insights from Raymond Williams’ cultural materialism for critically understanding the Internet and social media today? * ICT&S7 Dallas Smythe and the Internet: How can we use insights from Dallas Smythe’s political economy of communication for critically understanding the Internet and social media today? * ICT&S8 Critical Cultural Studies Today: Stuart Hall, Richard Hoggart and the Internet: What is the legacy of Stuart Hall and Richard Hoggart’s versions of cultural studies for critically understanding the Internet?
