by Anatoliy Gruzd 19 Nov '14

19 Nov '14

(Apologies for cross-posting) ------------------------------------ 6th Annual International Social Media & Society Conference Toronto, Canada July 27-29, 2015 http://SocialMediaAndSociety.com/ ------------------------------------ Call for Submissions Academic research on social media is growing exponentially across various disciplines including: Communications, Information / Library Science, Computer Science, Business, Sociology, Education, Psychology, Health and others. The Web of Science alone indexed nearly 5,000 journal and conference publications over the last decade. This growing body of research revealed many interesting factors about social media platforms, their users, and a glimpse of our society at large. But are we any closer to understanding the broader implications of social media on our increasing networked society? The 2015 Social Media & Society Conference (#SMSociety15) invites scholarly and original submissions that build on the previous work and critically evaluate the role of social media for social and political change, community engagement, marketing, new forms of governance, support of individuals and organizations in domains such as business, information, management, public administration, academia, health, and journalism (just to mention a few). We are also calling for submissions that develop and apply novel methods and theories to collect, analyze, and visualize social media data as well as those that discuss ethical and privacy implications of using big and small data. We welcome both quantitative and qualitative work in the broad area of Social Media & Society that crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in social media. Whether you are just starting a new research project or ready to report on the final results, you will find that #SMSociety15 is a great venue for you! The 2015 conference invites a wide range of submissions: - short papers on completed or well-developed projects (Due: March 2, 2015) - work-in-progress paper abstracts (Due: April 10, 2015), - panel discussions (Due: March 2, 2015) - poster presentations (Due: May 1, 2015). New to this year, we are also calling for proposals to host: - half-day workshops (Due: February 2, 2015) on a well-defined area or technical tutorials that will examine a particular method or tool for the analysis of social media data in more detail PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES All accepted short papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings by the ACM International Conference Proceeding Series (ICPS). Authors of accepted top papers will be invited to submit their full papers to the special issue of the Information, Communication & Society journal (published by Taylor & Francis). Academics and Activist Against Xenophobia
by Sanaz Raji 18 Nov '14

18 Nov '14

This statement has already been endorsed by more than 50 individuals including National Union of Students (UK) and University College Union representatives in addition to David Palumbo-Liu, Professor, Stanford University, Dr Adi Kuntsman, Manchester Metropolitan University, Sima Shakhsari, Assistant professor, Wellesley College, and Mark LeVine (UC irvine, Lund University). *If you agree with the statement, please send me a personal message along with your university/organizational affiliation. * We, the undersigned, are academics, activists, and students deeply concerned about the growing xenophobia of the Home Office, which is harming our fellow non-EU colleagues and students and often preventing them from teaching, researching, and studying in British higher education. As indicated in a Times Higher Education piece in January 2014 [* <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…>http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/features/non-eu-scholars-struggling-w… <http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.timeshighereducation.co.uk%2…>*] universities are being discouraged from hiring non-EU academics, many of whom are the top scholars in their field. Non-EU academic staff, especially those who have completed their PhD research in the UK, are finding themselves at the mercy of an exploitative neoliberal higher education system that is bolstered by Home Office's punitive immigration policy, making it incredibly difficult to gain a work visa despite being offered employment. In other instances, non-EU scholars are increasingly being denied visas to attend academic conferences and to work on collaborative projects with their British counterparts [* <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…>http://euromaidanpress.com/2014/07/09/why-britain-denies-visas-to-ukrainian… <http://euromaidanpress.com/2014/07/09/why-britain-denies-visas-to-ukrainian…>*]. We do not believe that preventing non-EU scholars from entering the UK to take part in the production of knowledge and research helps our universities to maintain their world class position. However, the situation for non-EU international students who are already here is also appalling. While we saw British students decry the heavy-handed police involvement on campuses last year as part of the #CopsOffCampus initiative and, in particular, the horrendous treatment suffered by Defend Education Birmingham protesters on the University of Birmingham campus, little is known about police surveillance inflicted on non-EU students from a selection of countries who are forced to register with the police as demanded by their visa requirement. In some universities, most notably at Ulster University and Sunderland University, non-EU international students are subjected to biometric fingerprinting and further humiliating surveillance. We fail to understand how treating non-EU international students like criminals constitutes a welcoming and hospitable environment. Adding insult to injury, academics are being told they are obliged to inform the Home Office if they have any suspicions that a student is breaching the conditions of his or her leave to remain in the UK, or if the student is engaging in ‘suspicious behaviour.’ The discriminatory treatment of non-EU international students doesn't stop there. Despite non-EU international students paying exorbitant tuition fees, from £14,000 to over £20,000, that in turn helps fund the studies of British students, from May 2015, students and workers from outside the EU will have to pay a ‘NHS surcharge’ of up to £200 per year before they are given a visa. And what happens to non-EU international students who encounter substandard education and services at their universities? Instead of the educational provider being penalised for their failure to provide for the needs of their students, it is the students who have faced the wrath of UKBA, as was seen by students at London Metropolitan University in 2012 and now at Glyndwr University, who were forced to find another educational provider within 60 days or face deportation. Why should non-EU international students be punished in such a draconian manner for the failings of their universities? As National Union of Students (NUS) International Officer, Shreya Paudel has remarked, ‘We have been informed of some students being called for a “meeting” with the Home Office and then being detained to be deported. Even proven British criminals have substantially more rights to challenge a case against them than international students. Even the minimum legal concept of ‘innocent before proven guilty’ does not apply to international students.’ [* <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…>http://www.nusconnect.org.uk/blogs/blog/shreyapaudel/2014/07/24/Internation… <http://www.nusconnect.org.uk/blogs/blog/shreyapaudel/2014/07/24/Internation…>* ] The state- and media-imposed xenophobia directed at non-EU international students has now led to increased racist verbal and physical attacks, and even outright murder, as we witnessed this summer in Essex in the case of a Saudi international PhD student at Essex University, Nahid Almanea. Initiatives such as the I'm Not Welcome Campaign [* <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…>https://www.facebook.com/imnotwelcome/timeline <https://www.facebook.com/imnotwelcome/timeline>*] have documented many incidents of both racial and xenophobic attacks on and off campus against non-EU international students, especially those who are people of colour. The campaign also underscores the failure of universities, the Home Office, and the student movement to understand the particular needs of non-EU international students and academic staff. The xenophobic and racist rhetoric faced daily by non-EU international students is exemplified by the comments of Nigel Carrington, Vice Chancellor of the University of Arts London (UAL), who said in August 2014 to The Independent [* <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…>http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/university-syste… <http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/university-syste…>*] that while non-EU international students are needed in order to prevent an increase in tuition fees for British students, they 'undermine our economy' because they take away the skills honed in the UK and use them to ‘go home and build their creative industries to compete against us.’ Mr. Carrington fails to question why non-EU international students and academic staff leave the UK and let their skills flourish elsewhere? He would do well to reflect on how fanning the flames of xenophobia in this way will affect the already hostile environment against migrants where racial attacks are frequent thanks to Theresa May's policies and the notorious ‘go home’ vans. Mr. Carrington appears to be unaware that it is now impossible for non-EU international students to remain legally in the UK after they finish their courses if they do not have a job offer, because in 2012 the government phased out the post-study work visa (which allowed non-EU international students the right to seek work for 2 years in the UK), replacing it with a graduate entrepreneur visa, requiring ‘genuine and credible’ business ideas. Mr. Carrington, like many other university vice-chancellors, clearly regards non-EU international students as cash cows who are essential if they themselves are to retain their inflated six figure salaries and luxury lifestyles. It is they who are running British higher education to the ground, not non-EU international students and academic staff. Even more shameful is the treatment of those non-EU academics and students who dare to speak out against the rampant neoliberalism within higher education and the way universities use their precarious immigration status to force them out of the country in order to silence their voices and activism. Ongoing cases and campaigns like that of Sanaz Raji (Justice4Sanaz campaign) [* <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…>http://ceasefiremagazine.co.uk/neoliberalism-higher-education-sanaz-rajis-s… <http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fceasefiremagazine.co.uk%2Fneolib…>*] and past threats directed at Dr. Casey Brienza [ <https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop…> http://www.city.ac.uk/people/academics/casey-brienza <http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.city.ac.uk%2Fpeople%2Facadem…>] by her employer regarding her immigration status are only two examples of a widespread abuses in this context. The fact that non-EU academics and students cannot challenge a university for continually failing to meet its own standards speaks volumes about the nature of the once highly regarded British higher education system. We call for an end to state-imposed xenophobia and racism against non-EU international students and an end to draconian restrictions placed upon them. We call for a fairer system that does not penalise non-EU academics and students or seek to limit their contributions. Without these changes British higher education will inevitably become more insular and mediocre and unable to achieve and maintain world-class standards. Finally, we call on other UK academics to speak out and take a lead as professionals and intellectuals against turning the country's higher education institutions into a racist money making endeavour, destroying the spirit and integrity of the very idea of knowledge and learning. Link to statement here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/sanaz-raji/statement-academics-against-xenop… Many thanks, Sanaz -- Sanaz Raji +44 (0) 780 7873 550 Web: http://leeds.academia.edu/SanazRaji

ECIS 2015 | 10 Days | CfP for Track: Media Management and Information Systems | 10 Days Left | Strict Deadline 28th November
by Artur Lugmayr 18 Nov '14

18 Nov '14

=================================================================================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS ECIS TRACK 28: MEDIA MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS Cinzia Dal Zotto, Artur Lugmayr, and Robert Picard European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) 2015, M?nster, Germany http://www.ecis2015.eu/ *** IMPORTANT DATES: - submission opens: 6th October 2014 - submission deadline: 28th November 2014 (strict and only deadline!) - notification of acceptance: 28th February 2015 *** - submission system: http://www.ecis2015.eu/participation/submissions - track homepage: http://www.ecis2015.eu/participation/list-tracks/28-media-management-and-in… *** The track is organized by the Association of Information System (AIS) SIG-eMedia in cooperation with the International Ambient Media Association (iAMEA) =================================================================================================================== TRACK DESCRIPTION Media firms face the central tension between the need to optimize and to innovate. Innovation is constantly needed as audiences are fragmenting as well as changing their preferences, and demand is rapidly declining. Thus, mechanisms must be developed to allow a multi-platform exploitation of content so that user preferences are fulfilled and returns from investments ensured. Information technology plays a key role within this context. Newly emerged forms of news and, more in general, knowledge gathering, dissemination and consumption have been challenging traditional economic and working models during the past decade. These new forms are driven by mass creativity, interactive rather than passive consumption of media, erosion of industrial control over the means of production and the development of highly accessible new communication technologies. The implications of these emerging modes of practice have enormous potential for constructive growth and increased competitiveness within our economic system. Media are therefore an interesting and worthwhile research object for both media and information technology scholars. Besides strategic management, innovation and technology management theories as well as concepts from disciplines such as sociology and psychology can be applied in order to better understand the impact of social media on the development of new business models, and on media user and consumer behavior. This track aims therefore at merging media management as well as information management and systems researchers to stimulate discussion around the current status as well as the future development of media from a technological, managerial, business as well as social point of view. The proposed track will focus on (but is not limited to) topics such as - The role of information technology within the development of the media industry - The impact of information systems on the economics of the media business - Network and Lock-in effects on media industry structure and competition - Information systems and media convergence issues - The role of technology acceptance factors for the adoption and diffusion of technology driven media products - The role of content and information systems for the creation of new media business models - The interplay between technology and content, and their impact on media consumer choices - Information technology and the emergence of new media professions - The link between information systems and the development of data journalism - The impact of information systems on journalistic work and processes - Information technology, audience measurement and audience participation - Information technology and social media management TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS The proposed track on media management aims at attracting the full spectrum of submissions: - Completed papers that represent a mature, theory-driven and empirically validated research - Research-in-progress papers that explore emerging research areas and would profit from discussion and feedback at ECIS - Practical examples of technology sustained new media business models and managerial systems PAPER SUBMISSIONS Research papers and research-in-progress papers are limited to 12 and 7 pages in length respectively, practical examples to 14 pages. All submissions must use the Word or the LaTeX template on the website and be submitted as PDF. Submissions to ECIS 2015 must be original, NOT previously published in a journal or conference proceedings, nor presented at another conference. Moreover, they must NOT be currently under consideration for publication or presentation elsewhere. Note that a person can be (co)author of NO more than 3 submissions to ECIS 2015 to assure diversity at the conference. For all the relevant information regarding the submission of your paper(s) to ECIS 2015, please go to: http://www.ecis2015.eu/participation/submissions If you have questions concerning the ECIS TRACK 28: MEDIA MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS, please contact: cinzia.dalzotto(a)unine.ch or Artur Lugmayr (lartur(a)acm.org) If you have a question regarding the submission of your paper and your question is not being answered on the website, please feel free to contact info(a)ecis2015.eu.

Book Announcement - Developer's Dilemma: The Secret World of Videogame Creators
by Casey O'Donnell 18 Nov '14

18 Nov '14

I know many of you have either heard me talk about the book or been annoyed by recent giddy social media postings. However, it is a real physical thing in warehouses and getting shipped to actual worldly locations (as opposed to just a thing I talk about as if it was real), so I'm sending an official book announcement: http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/developers-dilemma Developer's Dilemma: The Secret World of Videogame Creators By: Casey O'Donnell Overview Rank-and-file game developers bring videogames from concept to product, and yet their work is almost invisible, hidden behind the famous names of publishers, executives, or console manufacturers. In this book, Casey O’Donnell examines the creative collaborative practice of typical game developers. His investigation of why game developers work the way they do sheds light on our understanding of work, the organization of work, and the market forces that shape (and are shaped by) media industries. O’Donnell shows that the ability to play with the underlying systems—technical, conceptual, and social—is at the core of creative and collaborative practice, which is central to the New Economy. When access to underlying systems is undermined, so too is creative collaborative process. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in game studios in the United States and India, O’Donnell stakes out new territory empirically, conceptually, and methodologically. Mimicking the structure of videogames, the book is divided into worlds, within which are levels; and each world ends with a boss fight, a “rant” about lessons learned and tools mastered. O’Donnell describes the process of videogame development from pre-production through production, considering such aspects as experimental systems, “socially mandatory” overtime, and the perpetual startup machine that exhausts young, initially enthusiastic workers. He links work practice to broader systems of publishing, manufacturing, and distribution; introduces the concept of a privileged “actor-intra-internetwork”; and describes patent and copyright enforcement by industry and the state. Cheers. Casey -- Casey O'Donnell, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Media and Information Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab (GEL) Michigan State University http://www.caseyodonnell.org

38th Annual New Jersey College English Association
by Klobucar, Philip Andrew 17 Nov '14

17 Nov '14

*Announcing Call for Papers for 38th Annual New Jersey College English Association * *OUT OF SYNC: TEACHING LITERATURE in the DIGITAL ERA* This year’s conference seeks papers as well as electronic media projects focusing on the future of literature and writing studies in the early 21st century. Featuring panel discussions and professional demos, “Out of Sync: Teaching Literature in the Digital Era” proposes to examine how digital education technologies have recently transformed both the practice and instruction of the literary arts in today’s academy. Possible topics to be explored may include: the influence of big data, rapid innovation, and startup culture on the teaching and study of literature; how literary theory has responded politically, materially and aesthetically to the digital era; the shrinking size and intellectual role of humanities departments in postsecondary institutions. We are looking for both scholarship and apps or tech demonstrations that explore the intersection between literature and educational technology. *PRESENTATION PROPOSALS FOR THE FOLLOWING TWO CONFERENCE PANELS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED* * 1. After the Book: Critical Reflections on Digital Storytelling and its Challenges to Traditional Narrative Models in Electronic Literature.* As the literary arts continue to expand in scope to include multimodal formats and new production and distribution tools, the very concept of what a text is and how it functions is undergoing its most significant transformation in half a millennium. This panel welcomes papers on how traditional print-based modes of narration and storytelling will continue to develop as digital media. Possible topics include: § Educational uses of digital storytelling § The Move from narrative structures to databases as a mode of organizing, chronicling and communicating storylines. § Coding as a literary form § Immersion and interactive narratives within digital media § Narratology and multimodal media format *2. Precariat Labor and University Teaching in the Humanities* By now we’re all familiar with the same oft-quoted statistics: the ratio of available tenure-track positions in American universities to the amount of Ph.Ds awarded each year is roughly 1:7. In Humanities related fields that ratio is even more unbalanced. Undergraduates in most English programs across the country have less than a 50 per cent chance of having a tenured or tenure-track faculty member as their professor. This panel welcomes papers on how the increasingly precarious state of employment for university professors is likely affecting scholarship, pedagogy and course and program design in the literary arts and beyond. Possible topics include: § Digital labor in the university: how digital technologies are transforming teaching and service in higher education § Role of literature in an information-based economy and its relationship to the so-called “creative industries.” § Ethnographies of digital work: the race and gender politics of online courses § Digital labor and gaming/gamification in relation to online teaching and course design § The Networked Student: the use and effect of crowdsourcing on student assignments and curriculum design § The use of automated essay scoring in online teaching *Presentation Proposals *of 250-500 words can be submitted here: http://goo.gl/forms/fFzGwTCWHU *DEADLINE:* *January 16, 2015* *WORKING RECIPES - THE TECH TEST KITCHEN: DEMOS and ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION on TEACHING with NEW EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES* In addition to the panel presentations, the conference will also feature a special, ongoing demo session able to highlight new digital education technologies now development or ready for use. Participants in the “Tech Test Kitchen” will be given the opportunity to introduce their tools and answer questions in a later round table discussion on how these technologies and methods may be transforming our pedagogies and teaching practices. *Individual proposals to demo tools and new teaching methods in the Tech Test Kitchen are now being accepted. Please provide a cover sheet including your name, the title or name of the tool you will be featuring and a brief 100 to 250 word description of its various features and capabilities to Dr. Andrew Klobucar, NJCEA Conference Organizer via **klobucar(a)njit.edu* <klobucar(a)njit.edu>*. Please note that wire frame renderings and concept art are also acceptable. These demos do not have to feature fully finished projects and technologies. A chief aim of this session and discussion is to introduce new ideas and arguments concerning teaching with education technologies.* *DEADLINE: January 16, 2015* Andrew Klobucar Associate Professor Department of Humanities 428 Cullimore Hall 973.596.5724 klobucar(a)njit.edu

FW: [MCJ] CFP: M/C Journal 'authentic' Issue (article deadline: 16 Jan. 2015)
by Axel Bruns 17 Nov '14

17 Nov '14

G'day ! This may be of interest to some of you: > -----Original Message----- > From: Axel Bruns [mailto:editor@media-culture.org.au] > Sent: Monday, 17 November 2014 17:23 > To: Axel Bruns > Subject: [MCJ] CFP: M/C Journal 'authentic' Issue (article deadline: 16 Jan. > 2015) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 17 Nov. 2014 M/C - Media and Culture http://www.media-culture.org.au/ is calling for contributors to the 'authentic' issue of M/C Journal http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ M/C Journal is inviting new contributors. Founded in 1998, M/C is a crossover journal between the popular and the academic, and a blind- and peer-reviewed journal. Our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ provides open access to all past issues. To find out how and in what format to contribute your work, visit http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/about/submissions. Call for Papers: 'authentic' Edited by Nicholas Hookway and Sara James Authenticity pervades contemporary culture. From therapy and self-help culture to moral exhorts to be 'true to yourself' to debates about 'realness' in political and online life, authenticity is the value of our times. We seek to perform authentically, to consume authentic products and to be authentic people. To describe something as inauthentic is the critic's cruellest barb, implying that the product or person under review is contrived, insincere, or at worst, soulless. As Charles Taylor has suggested, authenticity is not simply an "offshoot of individualism", it is in itself a "powerful moral ideal" (Ethics of Authenticity, 14-15). Ideals of self-fulfilment, personal improvement and 'being true to myself' are central to Western culture but how productive are these ideals and what are their consequences for moral, social and cultural life? Is the prominence of authenticity an expression of growing narcissism or does it engender new forms of responsibility and care? This issue of M/C Journal seeks to investigate the significance of authenticity in regards to self, culture and society across key areas of social life from ethics, spirituality, work and intimacy to new media, tourism, health and environment. We invite submissions that assess the role of authenticity in late-modern life and its real-world applications and consequences.
