CFP: 10th Visual and Cultural Studies Graduate Conference (Drawing Together: Solidarities, Pictures, and Politics)
by Anderson, Joel Neville 13 Nov '14

13 Nov '14

Drawing Together: Solidarities, Pictures, and Politics 10th Visual and Cultural Studies Graduate Conference University of Rochester April 10-11, 2015 http://humanities.lib.rochester.edu/vcsconference “Solidarity” recalls notions of inclusivity, activism, and movement. Adopted from the French solidarité in the early 19th century, the word continues to indicate the communal union of interests or aspirations, as well as collective responsibility. From its use by labor unions to its association with socialism and communism, solidarity has historically been made to bear a sense of the political. We recognize in the powerful images of recent events a renewed need to assess strategies of togetherness, both historical and contemporary. We propose this topic with the aim of critically engaging pictures and their power to mobilize both differences and commonalities. Can we envision solidarity outside the pursuit of common political aims? Can we find common ground amidst different struggles? We invite scholars, artists, and activists to draw upon our understanding of solidarity and the visual dimensions in which solidarity is organized in social movements, represented in art and activism, and studied in and out of the academy. Possible topics might include, but are by no means limited to: * Artistic practice in political movements (labor, civil rights, climate change) * Tactics and strategies of historical and contemporary grassroots movements * Media images, hashtag #solidarity, spectacle * Protest songs, union anthems, “The Internationale,” “Solidarity Forever” * Armchair activism, “slacktivism,” and the ethics of involvement * Documentation of collectivity, alternative journalism * The politics of love and kinship We invite individual submissions as well as pre-constituted panels (of 3-4 presenters) in the form of 300 word abstracts (for 20-minute paper presentations) and 100 word bios for each presenter, to be sent to vcsconference(a)gmail.com by February 15, 2015. Select presenters may be invited to revise presentations for publication at InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal of Visual Culture (http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu<http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/>). CfP - Persona Studies Journal and Working Papers Symposium
by Kim Barbour 12 Nov '14

12 Nov '14

Call for Papers (with apologies for cross-posting): The inaugural issue of Persona Studies is scheduled for open access publication in March 2015. This exciting new journal will be preceded by a Working Papers Symposium held in Melbourne, Australia on February 5 2015, with virtual participation welcome. Abstracts are now being sought for the symposium and/or the inaugural issue of the journal. Open Call: Research and writing on any aspect of persona and persona studies. Persona studies is an emerging area of cross-disciplinary study that investigates the presentation of the self and the masks that we use as we construct ourselves in real and virtual settings and worlds. It is an exploration of the public self and how these versions of identity come to prominence in contemporary culture. It acknowledges that we all negotiate and construct personas that we deploy and employ in work and professional environments as much as in our recreational and leisure activities: much of the emerging work in persona studies is closer studies of these particular settings and how they help frame our public selves. The field of study has antecedents that connect its work to the study of celebrity and public personalities, performance studies, media and cultural studies and game identity work, biographical research, life-writing and autobiography work along with Internet studies, communication studies, cultural anthropology, social psychology, sociology and philosophy of the self and gender studies. It has further links with areas that also look at reputation and impression management and the critical investigation of branding, self-branding and the 'quantified self'. The journal's intentions are to facilitate an intellectual exchange, debate and discussion around persona and its constitution. It is an invitation to investigate its varied manifestations, its patterning in contemporary culture, its differentiation in different technological and cultural settings, and its conceptual and material significance and value. To gain a further sense of what constitutes persona studies, please see the recent special persona themed issue of M/C - Journal of Media and Culture: http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/issue/view/persona Written paper submissions: In the first instance, submit a 250-300 word abstract to personastudies(a)deakin.edu.au<mailto:personastudies@deakin.edu.au>, with 'Full Paper' in the subject line, by 8 December 2014. You will be notified to proceed to a full length paper within a week of abstract submission. For guidelines on the preparations of your full paper, see Author Guidelines: https://ojs.deakin.edu.au/index.php/ps/about/submissions#authorGuidelines. Full papers should be between 5000-8000 words, including citations, and will be vetted by the editorial team prior to submission for blind peer-review. Acceptance for peer review does not guarantee inclusion in the inaugural issue of the journal, but the editorial team may work with authors to develop papers for later issues. The second issue will have a special themed section on health and persona, and we encourage authors interested in this area to submit abstracts for inclusion. Key dates - Journal Abstract submission deadline - 8 December 2014 Notification of acceptance - 15 December 2014 Full papers due for peer review - 13 February 2015 Final revised papers due - 13 March 2015 Persona Studies journal launch - 20 March 2015 Working Paper Symposium submissions: In the first instance, submit a 250-300 word abstract to personastudies(a)deakin.edu.au<mailto:personastudies@deakin.edu.au>, with 'Working Paper' in the subject line by 8 December 2014. We will notify by 15 December 2014. Symposium participants must submit either a 10 minute audio-visual presentation OR a 2000-3000 word written paper by 28 January. This will be circulated to workshop participants and attendees. The symposium is designed to allow ample discussion. Therefore, each presenter will have fifteen minutes to focus on their work. In this time, you will briefly introduce your project or paper in process before shifting to group discussion. Where possible, papers on similar or complimentary themes will be presented consecutively, and more general discussion will follow each themed section. You may attend in person or participate virtually, and your paper will also be considered for inclusion in the inaugural issue of the journal. Nov 21st #ELD15 Initial Proposal Deadline
by AJ Kelton 12 Nov '14

12 Nov '14

Please consider submitting a proposal, which consists of a title and a 500 word abstract. See below for information on our revise/resubmit process. Also, please share this with your colleagues The *2015 Emerging Learning Design Conference (ELD15)* is accepting proposals for its 5th annual conference, to be held *May 29th 2015 *on the campus of Montclair State University. *INITIAL PROPOSAL DEADLINE – NOVEMBER 21st, 2015*. See below for details. - For the Call for Proposals Submission Form – click https://msusurveys.montclair.edu/index.php/771656/lang-en - For the ELD15 Session Types – click http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/session-types/ - For the Call for Proposals FAQ – click http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/eld-call-for-proposals-faq/ The theme for this year's conference is *CONNECT, CONSTRUCT, CREATE: ENGAGING APPROACHES TO TEACHING AND LEARNING* *ROLLING SUBMISSION / EARLY ACCEPTANCE MODEL* ELD uses a “rolling submission” model for proposals: every proposal will be reviewed and given feedback within 2 weeks of submission. Your submission will either be accepted or you’ll be provided feedback from our reviewers and offered an opportunity to revise and resubmit. We’ll continue this process of accepting or giving constructive feedback to proposals until all presentation slots are filled or we reach our INITIAL PROPOSAL DEADLINE of November 21st, 2014. Submissions will still be accepted after November 21st, but they will be considered in the second round of proposals. We will work with those who submitted by the EARLY ACCEPTANCE DEADLINE and then look toward later submissions to complete the program, should presentation slots still be available. Why this model? Two main reasons: we've seen that having revise-and-resubmit cycles make our conference’s presentations the best they can be for our attendees, and accepting excellent proposals as they arrive is a great way to let our prospective audience know what to look forward to even before the whole program is finalized. In addition, this model is easier on our reviewers as we don’t get a rush of proposals on deadline day. How do you submit a proposal? Go to http://eld.montclair.edu/eld-call-for-proposals/eld-call-for-proposals-faq/ <http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Feld.montclair.edu%2Feld-call-for…> read some brief instructions on what we need in your submission, and then go to URL and supply that information. We’ll be in touch to confirm your submission was complete, and then let you know within a couple weeks the response from our reviewers. Accepted conference presentations have the potential to be included as proceedings in the Journal of Emerging Learning Design. -- *AJ Kelton* Director, CHSS Emerging & Instructional Technology College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University 973.655.3057 keltona(a)mail.montclair.edu [image: It's all here. cfp - The Social Productivity of Anonymity
by Andreas Wittel 11 Nov '14

11 Nov '14

Call for papers for an *ephemera *special issue on: The social productivity of anonymity *Issue Editors: *Götz Bachmann and Andreas Wittel Anonymity is deeply tied to the European values of liberty, equality and fraternity. Concealing one’s identity can enable freedom (as in the anonymity of speech), support equality (e.g. in anonymous application procedures), and provide the basis for non-reciprocal relationships as expressed in the value of brotherhood (e.g. asking a stranger for directions). It is capable of traversing cultural differences and is essential for many contemporary forms of sharing, communality and collaboration (e.g. commons based peer production such as Wikipedia entries and open-source software). However, it is also contested and, indeed, under threat: networked databases, biometric identification and surveillance technologies such as CCTV are matched by discourses that condemn anonymity and celebrate transparency and openness. Legal, technological and moral imperatives towards transparency contribute to a process in which anonymity is increasingly under attack. As a consequence, the ‘end of anonymity’ has been declared in public discourses, not only since the revelations of Edward Snowden. However, this claim deserves to be scrutinised a bit further. Using a more analytical perspective, it becomes apparent that anonymity constitutes a specific form of social relation in which potentially identifying markers of individuality and difference are dissociated from specific individuals and collectives. This has the effect of creating situational, relational and partial forms of unknowability, invisibility, and untrackability (Nissenbaum, 1999; Ponesse, 2013). As contemporary societies are increasingly based on networked infrastructures we face new questions of how information, property and people can be disconnected. This holds true with regard to phenomena such as the international activist network Anonymous, internet-based communication, and forms of ‘algorithmic anonymity’ (Rossiter and Zehle, 2014). The social, moral, and legal significance of anonymity is also reflected in such controversial domains as baby drop-off boxes and anonymous births, the anonymous donation of organs, gametes, and blood, as well as peer reviewing and application procedures. Research into current transformations of anonymity at the intersections of technologies/infrastructures and politics is surprisingly thin. Empirical scholarship is fragmented and theoretical conceptualizations are rare (Nissenbaum, 1999; Frois, 2009; Wiedemann, 2012; Ponesse, 2013). With a perspective on everyday social and cultural practices future research will be able to build on a number of ethnographies such as Konrad’s work on egg donation (2005), Copeman’s comparative inquiries into blood donation (2009), Frois’ exploration of anonymity in self-help groups (2009), Lock’s ethnography of organ transplantation (2002), and Coleman’s study of hackers who operate under the Anonymous label (2010, 2013). While these studies provide some methodological and theoretical groundwork, none of them has addressed anonymity in its full complexity, nor have they linked constellations of anonymity regimes across different case studies. To collect insights into the ways in which anonymity is modified, maintained or abandoned in contemporary online-offline worlds, this special issue will combine three areas of research into anonymity: (1) research into technologies and infrastructures of information, communication, surveillance and identification; (2) research into the regulation, ethics and politics of anonymity; and (3) research into the everyday practices of anonymity ranging from sperm donation to social media, from peer review to police work, from political mobilisation to self-help groups. While anonymity is a deeply ambivalent social form we are particularly interested in contributions that defend anonymous interactions. Can we develop a concept of anonymity that emphasises its cultural and political values and its social productivity? Can we demonstrate that anonymity enhances, enriches and strengthens the social? We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines, looking for - Enquiries into the technical dimensions of anonymity: What forms of standards, protocols, software designs, technologies and aesthetics are shaping anonymity? How are they designed, decided upon, regulated and changed? - Ethnographic case studies into local formations of anonymity, especially those that connect online-based forms of anonymity with offline practices. - Case studies on the macro and micro-politics of anonymity, especially when anonymity becomes problematic. What undermines anonymity in specific settings, who develops strategies in its defence and to what aim? - Research into activist tactics and strategies for enabling anonymity, and attempts to raise the public socio-technical literacy with regard to managing identifying information (for example cryptoparties). - Research into the legal, moral or ethical principles and (historical) discourses, and how they are enacted, reflected, criticized or recreated by heterogeneous actors while doing/undoing anonymity. - Theoretical and empirical articles on the properties of anonymity, such as blockages of tracing identification, continuities between past and present and the prevention of reciprocity, and anonymity’s duration, (non-)reversibility and dynamics. - Theoretical and empirical articles on ways in which anonymity connects to concepts and practices of the person, the self, the social, of private/public constellations, of statehood, property and the commons. Contributions Potential contributors are asked to write an extended abstract (between 500 and 1000 words). Abstracts should be sent to both editors (goetz.bachmann [at] leuphana.de and andreas.wittel [at] gmail.com) The deadline for the submission of abstracts is *15 January 2015*. Notification of acceptance of abstracts will be 1 March 2015, and the deadline for the submission of full papers is *30 September 2015*. Please note that three categories of contributions are invited for the special issue: articles, notes, and reviews. All submissions should follow *ephemera*’s submissions guidelines ( www.ephemerajournal.org/how-submit <http://www.ephemeraweb.org/journal/submit.htm>). Articles will undergo a double blind review process. References Bauman, Z. (2011) ‘Is this the end of anonymity? CFP: First International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'15)
by Seda Gurses 11 Nov '14

11 Nov '14

hi everyone, this computer science workshop is especially encouraging interdisciplinary and critical works on privacy and engineering practice, so i hope you consider submitting. best, s. CFP: First International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'15) http://ieee-security.org/TC/SPW2015/IWPE/ http://www.ieee-security.org/TC/SP2015 21 May 2015 - The Fairmont, San Jose, CA ************************************************************ IMPORTANT DATES Deadline of paper submission: 23 January, 2015 Notification of acceptance: 16 February, 2015 Accepted Paper camera ready: 3 March, 2015 ************************************************************ We are pleased to invite you to participate in the premier annual event of the International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'15). Ongoing news reports regarding global surveillance programs, massive personal data breaches in corporate databases, and notorious examples of personal tragedies due to privacy violations have intensified societal demands for privacy-friendly systems. In response, current legislative and standardization processes worldwide aim to strengthen individual’s privacy by introducing legal and organizational frameworks that personal data collectors and processors must follow. However, in practice, these initiatives alone are not enough to guarantee that organizations and software developers will be able to identify and adopt appropriate privacy engineering techniques in their daily practices. Even if so, it is difficult to systematically evaluate whether the systems they develop using such techniques comply with legal frameworks, provide necessary technical assurances, and fulfill users’ privacy requirements. It is evident that research is needed in developing techniques that can aid the translation of legal and normative concepts, as well as user expectations into systems requirements. Furthermore, methods that can support organizations and engineers in developing (socio-)technical systems that address these requirements is of increasing value to respond to the existing societal challenges associated with privacy. In this context, privacy engineering research is emerging as an important topic. Engineers are increasingly expected to build and maintain privacy-preserving and data-protection compliant systems in different ICT domains such as health, energy, transportation, social computing, law enforcement, public services; based on different infrastructures such as cloud, grid, or mobile computing and architectures. While there is a consensus on the benefits of an engineering approach to privacy, concrete proposals for processes, models, methodologies, techniques and tools that support engineers and organizations in this endeavor are few and in need of immediate attention. To cover this gap, the topics of the International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'15) focus on all the aspects surrounding privacy engineering, ranging from its theoretical foundations, engineering approaches, and support infrastructures, to its practical application in projects of different scale. Specifically, we are seeking the following kinds of papers: (1) technical solution papers that illustrate a novel formalism, method or other research finding with preliminary evaluation; (2) experience and practice papers that describe a case study, challenge or lessons learned from in a specific domain; (3) early evaluations of tools and other infrastructure that support engineering tasks in privacy requirements, design, implementation, testing, etc.; (4) interdisciplinary studies or critical reviews of existing privacy engineering concepts, methods and frameworks; or (5) vision papers that take a clear position informed by evidence based on a thorough literature review. IWPE’15 welcomes papers that focus on novel solutions on the recent developments in the general area of privacy engineering. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to: -Integration of law and policy compliance into the development process -Privacy impact assessment -Privacy risk management models -Privacy breach recovery Methods -Technical standards, heuristics and best practices for privacy engineering -Privacy engineering in technical standards -Privacy requirements elicitation and analysis methods -User privacy and data protection requirements -Management of privacy requirements with other system requirements -Privacy requirements operationalization -Privacy engineering strategies and design patterns -Privacy architectures -Privacy engineering and databases -Privacy engineering in the context of interaction design and usability -Privacy testing and evaluation methods -Validation and verification of privacy requirements -Engineering Privacy Enhancing Technologies -Models and approaches for the verification of privacy properties -Tools supporting privacy engineering -Teaching and training privacy engineering -Adaptations of privacy engineering into specific software development processes -Pilots and real-world applications -Privacy engineering and accountability -Organizational, legal, political and economic aspects of privacy engineering This topic list is not meant to be exhaustive; since IWPE'15 is interested in all aspects of privacy engineering. However, papers without a clear application to privacy engineering will be considered out of scope and may be rejected without full review. ************************************************************ PAPER FORMAT & SUBMISSION We solicit unpublished short position papers (up to 4 pages) and long papers reporting technical, research or industry experience (up to 8 pages) on all dimensions of the privacy engineering domain.
