Variations in this identity have been perceived either in relation to preferred platform or level of commitment and skill (newbie, casual, core, pro, etc.). Today the popularity of games has increased dramatically, games have become more specialized and gaming is taking place in a number of divergent practices, from e-sport to gamification. In addition, the gamer position includes a number of roles and identities such as: players, learners, time-fillers, users, fans, roleplayers, theory crafters, speed runners, etc. Furthermore, techniques like gamification and game-based learning, as well as the playful use of computer simulation for training purposes, is making it difficult to distinguish games from non-games. Additionally, video game culture is merging with other forms of popular culture and new mobile technologies are making distinctions between digital and non-digital gaming blurred. Yet, whilst the forms of play seem to have become more diverse, the content of games is often only challenged by independent titles. This is the case despite a maturing audience, some of whom now seem to urge for more diverse themes and representations within games. In the light of increasing criticism of the representations and practices that have dominated much of games culture, it seems that the relationship between the identity of the ‘gamer’ and the content of games is undergoing a change. Traditionally, game studies has tried to find common ground, seeking shared definitions and epistemologies. DiGRA 2015 seeks to encourage questions about the ‘Diversity of play’, with a focus on the multiple different forms, practices and identities labeled as games and/or game culture. The conference aims to address the challenge of studying and documenting games, gaming and gamers, in a time when these categories are becoming so general and/or contested, that they might risk losing all meaning. Given this, what concepts do we need to develop in order for our research to be cumulative and how do we give justice to the diverse forms of play found in different games and game cultures? As in the previous year, DiGRA 2015 will accept submissions in five categories: full papers, abstracts, panel, workshops, and events. All submissions will be peer-reviewed using double blind reviewing. In addition, all submissions will receive a meta review and authors of rejected full papers will have the possibility to send a rebuttal if they perceive they have been given biased or uninformed reviewers. In his theoretical manifesto, Toward An Architecture, Le Corbusier wrote, “The plan is the generator. Without plan there can be neither grandeur of aim and expression, nor rhythm, nor mass, nor coherence. . . . The plan is what determines everything; it is the decisive moment.” The plan or blueprint is the primary tool of the architect’s and the drafter’s trades—a technical document that bridges creative impulse and constructive labor, intent and execution, virtuality and materiality. Taking shape as a conversation among concept, form, and representation, a blueprint insistently nudges its spectator’s gaze outside its frame. It is understood as a necessary stage on the way to something larger, something grander, something more, and is usually seen not as a self-contained object, but as prescription directed toward a particular outcome. Yet a blueprint may also be the terminus of the unrealized and the unrealizable. Étienne-Louis Boullée’s Cénotaphe à Newton, Le Corbusier’s Ville Contemporaine, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Broadacres, and the Chicago Spire are among the many visionary designs abandoned at the drawing board, whose construction in real space we may now only imagine. In Issue 23, we would like contributors to consider how blueprints—and more broadly, agendas, manifestos, models, or prophesies—negotiate between the present and an imagined, idealized, or impossible future. What qualities and limitations are shared by conceptual architecture and other speculative mediums? How do plans and prototypes function as a critique of present realities? What is the aesthetic value of diagrams, renderings, sketches, or preparatory studies? What occurs when we no longer consider the model as process, but as finished product? What are the mechanisms through which the plan attempts to fill the gap between language and image or event? We welcome papers and artworks that further the various understandings of blueprints. The best critique of Ello I've seen so far comes from a founder of Upcoming and Kickstarter: https://ello.co/waxpancake/post/oy73kFfDdhOPh8Jv9z9pFA Andy Baio notes that Ello is venture capital funded, and unless they have a "very special" relationship with their VCs, it seems unlikely they'll be able to remain ad-free. Diaspora's big failing, IMHO, was that even a friend of mine who codes for a living couldn't get one of its distributed servers set up. It had massive usability issues on that front, meaning its promise of a distributed network was hamstrung from the start as everyone had to rely on centralized servers. Gus

Large scale asset repositories and different workflows in the content production process had to be introduced. Other media industries faced similar challenges, as the emergence of digital publishing, digital content distribution, or advancement of in-house customer relationship management infrastructures, and the digitalization of workflows. This change towards digital implies a more holistic view of information systems and management in media industries to provide optimal system solutions, and eventually cut costs. Where other industries are well researched in terms of their IT system solutions, in media industries the discussion around content repositories, media management solutions, and digital workflows seems to be predominant. Within the context of this publication, a more holistic view towards information systems and management in media industries shall be introduced, and emphasize the importance of research of business information management and systems in media industries. The media and entertainment industry is the third largest industry segment for investments in information systems. And this particular industry segment is faced with tremendous challenges in terms of organizational, transformational, leadership, customer behaviour, and technological changes. User studies, usability metrics, techno-determinism, socio-determinism, user-centered design, participatory design, end user programming, user appropriation, technology adoption, diffusion of innovations, technology and development: such research overwhelmingly focuses on people using technology. We seek to problematize this focus by turning our attention to situations in which a particular individual or group of individuals are unable or choose not to use some specific technology or technological system. Focusing explicitly on non-use can function as a dialectic maneuver, an inversion that provides a novel perspective on, and potentially fuller understanding of, the complex, multifaceted relations among society and technology. We seek to explore these relationships and their broad ramifications rather than simply to transform non-users into users. Studying non-use in its many forms can highlight sociotechnical configurations that may be overlooked due to a singular focus on technology use. To this end, we seek submissions from a broad array of disciplines representing a diverse collection of methodological approaches to the topic of technology non-use. Studying non-use may require novel empirical investigations, methodological approaches, conceptual tools, and theoretical developments. Many and varied technologies may be relevant to consider: digital and analog, modern and ancient, computational and mechanical, popular and obscure, etc. Through this special issue, we also seek to avoid reifying a binary distinction between use and non-use. The point is not to draw ever clearer lines that help us understand what distinguishes non-use(rs) from use(rs). Rather, this special issue aims to explore the complex sociotechnical situations where various forms and degrees of non-use arise. We hope to provide a foundational repository for the topic of non-use through which scholars from many diverse fields can be in conversation with one another. Hi, all -- While we're on the topic of alternative social media sites such as Ello, I thought I'd bring a new article of mine to the list's attention. It's called "Power/freedom on the dark web: a digital ethnography of the Dark Web Social Network." It will be published in New Media and Society, and you can see an advance version here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2498629 The article explores a social network that is only accessible through Tor. Despite this, the site has grown quite a bit in the past year, with many privacy-conscious members signing up on this non-commercial, anti-surveillance social networking site.
