DEGREE> New hybrid Masters of Data Science @ Indiana University
by Rosenbaum, Howard S. 07 Nov '14

07 Nov '14

IU adds data science master's degree to keep pace with growing big data job demands Hybrid program allows for combination of online, on-campus course work Oct. 30, 2014 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing has announced a new master’s degree in the rapidly expanding field of data science. The inaugural class of students will begin the program in January. The new degree program capitalizes on the existing breadth of research and study at the school, with courses coming from computer science, informatics, information science, library science and statistics. There are two paths through the degree -- a technical path and a decision-maker path -- allowing students to easily customize the program to meet their professional goals. “The pace of data generation continues to escalate at unprecedented levels, and IU’s breadth and depth of faculty expertise in data science distinguishes our school and university,” Dean Bobby Schnabel said. “This program will produce well-prepared graduates who will provide a competitive advantage to companies and organizations across Indiana and throughout the nation.” The demand for big data jobs is a major driver behind the creation of the program. A 2011 McKinsey Global Institute report predicted huge demand in data science positions, projecting up to 1.8 million jobs in the United States in the next five years across all industries. “A high percentage of the school’s more than $18 million in annual research funding centers around big data, and our diverse faculty expertise in big data has shaped this degree,” said Geoffrey Fox, senior associate dean for research. The 30-credit program is available on campus, online or in a blended version with online and in-residence components. The online option provides an affordable, flexible opportunity for working professionals, while the residential program provides physical access to the school’s world-class faculty, opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research, and immersion in the vibrant Bloomington campus. The hybrid option allows students to take the first year of courses online and complete the second year on campus. “The hybrid option provides maximum flexibility for students,” said Howard Rosenbaum, associate dean for graduate studies. “This will be particularly appealing for students outside Indiana, especially international students.” Additional sequences will be available for those interested in specific domains, such as health, cybersecurity, life sciences and more. Courses will be offered in four broad areas: • Data analysis and statistics, which gives students skills to develop and extend algorithms, statistical approaches, and visualization techniques. • Data lifecycle, which helps students understand the data lifecycle, from digital birth to long-term preservation. • Data management and infrastructure, which teaches students to manage and support big data projects. • Big data application domains, which provides students with data analysis and decision-making experience in high-impact domain areas like health and security. The master’s degree deepens the school’s reach in this area, building on the affordable online data science certificate program, which will enter its second year in January. Visit the school’s Data Science degree site for more information and application details for both programs. http://www.soic.indiana.edu/graduate/degrees/data-science/index.html Related Links IU: Data science in demand http://www.soic.indiana.edu/graduate/degrees/data-science/ IU School of Informatics and Computing, Bloomington http://www.informatics.indiana.edu/ IU School of Informatics and Computing, IUPUI http://soic.iupui.edu/

recruiting students for new practice-based research PhD
by Lori Emerson 06 Nov '14

06 Nov '14

Dear all, Applications are now being accepted for the University of Colorado at Boulder's brand new practice-based PhD in Intermedia Art, Writing and Performance. The Intermedia Art, Writing and Performance (IAWP) unit is an interdisciplinary digital arts and humanities research unit with a practice-based PhD. Located in the University of Colorado's recently approved College of Media, Communication and Information, IAWP's core faculty collaboratively investigate past and present forms of digital art, writing, and performance and offer graduate students a hands-on, experiential-based learning environment in which to explore emerging forms of creativity triggered by practice-based research methodologies. The research conducted in the program reflects the rapidly transforming knowledge systems and digital media economies emerging from the substantial technological shifts currently taking place in our society. Digital creative work and critical media literacy play a defining role in our information society and are transforming all aspects of contemporary life, including the way many professional visual artists, multimedia performers, writers, publishers, digital humanists and archivists pursue their practice. Traditional scholarly and creative work outputs such as the single-authored print book or conventional gallery exhibitions have already been challenged by the emergence of multi-authored and/or hybridized forms of transmission such as Internet art sites, electronic literature, live audio/visual performance, multi-platform storytelling or transmedia narratives, software art, interactive installations for public spaces, augmented reality, game art, networked media activism, and innovative art applications for mobile devices and tablets. IAWP’s internationally-renowned and affiliated faculty network collaborate with graduate students probing the significance of a digitally-expanded, process-based research environment located in a cluster of interdisciplinary research labs. The program provides a flexible pedagogical structure that will lead to the creation of new and hybridized forms of art, writing, performance, scholarship, theory, design, curation, exhibition, and publication appropriate for our current cultural moment. The program concentrates its curriculum on digital forms of creativity so as to cultivate cutting-edge investigations into the practice, theory, history, and philosophy of media and its relationships to creativity, communication, technology, and information. Application deadlines: International: December 1, 2014 Domestic: January 1, 2015 To find out more about IAWP as well as application guidelines and program requirements, please visit: http://www.colorado.edu/cmci/academics/phd-intermedia-art-writing-and-perfo… For more on the IAWP faculty, please visit: http://www.colorado.edu/cmci/people/intermedia-art-writing-and-performance I would be grateful if you'd encourage your students to apply! best, Lori Emerson -- Lori Emerson Assistant Professor | Director, Media Archaeology Lab Department of English, University of Colorado at Boulder Hellems 101, 226 UCB, Boulder, CO 80309-0226 loriemerson.net | mediaarchaeologylab.com

Data Power conference, Sheffield, UK, June 2015
by Ben Light 06 Nov '14

06 Nov '14

Forwarding this on behalf of Helen Kennedy at Sheffield. Please direct all enquiries as detailed below. Cheers, Ben. DATA POWER: a two-day, international conference Date: Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd JUNE 2015 Venue: University of Sheffield, UK Data make many promises. Through data, we can access opinions, feelings, behaviours, people, in real time, at great volume and at great speed. Tracking data is the holy grail. Data have the potential to transform all aspects of society, making all of its operations more efficient. Big data represent opportunities for social researchers to enhance understanding of human behaviour. The numbers speak for themselves. But what is the cost of the data delirium (van Zoonen)? What kind of power is enacted when data are employed by governments and security agencies to monitor populations or by private corporations to accumulate knowledge about consumers in an increasingly ‘knowing capitalism’ (Thrift)? Because contemporary forms of data mining and analytics open up the potential for new, unaccountable and opaque forms of population management in a growing range of social realms, questions urgently need to be asked not only about who gets access to data and whose privacy is invaded, but also about control, discrimination, and social sorting – about data power. We also need to ask about the possibility of agency in the face of data power, of social groups sidestepping the dominating interests of big business and big government in our increasingly big-data-driven world. This conference creates a space to reflect on these and other critical issues relating to data’s ever more ubiquitous power. Keynote speakers include these fantastic commentators on data power: · Mark Andrejevic, Center for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland, author of AOIR book award winner Infoglut (2013); · Nick Couldry, London School of Economics, author and editor of 11 books & numerous articles, including ‘Big data from the bottom up’ (Big Data and Society); · Kate Crawford, Microsoft Social Media Research Collective, author of numerous articles on big data and Understanding the Internet: Language, Technology, Media, Power (forthcoming) (participation to be confirmed); · José van Dijck, Comparative Media Studies, University of Amsterdam, author of The Culture of Connectivity (2013); · Alison Hearn, Faculty of Information and Media Studies, University of Western Ontario, author of numerous articles on data, labour and subjectivity; · Richard Rogers, Digital Methods Initiative, University of Amsterdam, author of ICA book award winner Digital Methods (2013); · Evelyn Ruppert, Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths College, University of London, author (with Engin Isin) of Being Digital Citizens (forthcoming) & editor of Big Data and Society; · Joseph Turow, Annenberg School of Communication, University of Pennslyvania, author of The Daily You (2012), amongst many other publications. Papers are invited on the following – and other relevant – topics: * The political economy of data * Data cultures (data and the cultural industries, data journalism) * Data and the production of subjectivity and identity * Theorising data * The politics of data visualisation * Data labour * Emotional data * The social life of data and data-driven methods * The politics of open and linked data * Data-driven governance, surveillance and control * Data and discrimination * The regulation of data mining * Data citizens * Resistance, agency, appropriation. Information/details · Whilst we welcome papers of all kinds, please note that this conference focuses on critical questions about data’s power. Papers which do not address critical, social questions will not be accepted. · Submit 250 word paper proposals to data-power-conference(a)sheffield.ac.uk<mailto:data-power-conference@sheffield.ac.uk>by 16th January 2015. Decisions will be communicated by 30th January 2015. · The conference fee is £120 waged (approx. $190 / 150 euro, £80 unwaged/student (approx. $130 / 100 euro). · The conference will launch the special issue of The European Journal of Cultural Studies edited by Mark Andrejevic, Alison Hearn and Helen Kennedy, entitled ‘Data Mining and Analytics’. · DATA POWER is hosted by the University of Sheffield’s Digital Society Network, and the Department of Sociological Studies, both in the Faculty of Social Sciences. · The Steel City of Sheffield is one of the UK’s largest cities, close to the Peak District National Park in the heart of England, and with a fantastic cultural and creative life. -- Professor Helen Kennedy Department of Sociological Studies / Faculty of Social Sciences Elmfield, Northumberland Road Sheffield S10 2TU T: 0114 2226488 E: h.kennedy(a)sheffield.ac.uk<mailto:h.kennedy@sheffield.ac.uk>

CFP: CSCW 2015 Workshop on Feminism and Feminist Approaches in Social Media
by Ingrid Erickson 05 Nov '14

05 Nov '14

--------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: CSCW 2015 workshop on FEMINISM AND FEMINIST APPROACHES IN SOCIAL COMPUTING Sunday, March 15, 2015 --------------------------------------------- Submission Deadline: November 21, 2015 @ 5PM EDT Workshop website: http://www.stephaniesteinhardt.com/feministcscw/ --------------------------------------------- We invite participants interested in feminist perspectives in social computing and technology to join us for a pre-conference workshop at CSCW 2015. We will explore literature and empirical studies to build a set of creative dialogues around the topics of diversity, sexual orientation, cultural attitudes, sociopolitical affiliations, and other emergent themes. Conversations will be directed toward the challenges of using a feminist approach in CSCW scholarship, fueled in particular by the following generative questions: * How do the concerns of feminism and queer studies align with the central concerns of CSCW? * How can we pragmatically employ feminist reflexivity to understand current CSCW interests in mobile development, big data, and social media, or distributed practices? * How might we better represent our technological innovations and mediated collaborations through feminist and queer studies approaches? * What are the gaps that feminist perspectives can fill for CSCW scholarship? * How can we employ feminist perspectives to consider the nature of both work and leisure life? * How can feminist approaches be used to identify and legitimize different forms of work central to CSCW concern? We hope to unpack the unifying threads connecting the many epistemological approaches across disciplines, field sites, theoretical contributions, and methodologies that employ the term "feminism" for studies of technology and collaboration. Application Procedure If you are interested in joining us, please submit a position paper (1000-word limit) that includes: 1. A vignette or anecdote from your work or from existing literature that illustrates your opinion on the purchase or challenge of a feminist approach. 2. Three (3) or more relevant references annotated to generate discussion on feminist approaches in CSCW. 3. Author biography including current research or potential goals of research. All proposals must be submitted in English. Papers will be selected via blind review based both on quality as well as breadth of perspective in order to ensure a broad conversation on gender. Accepted position papers will be circulated within the participant group prior to the workshop and made available post hoc on the workshop website (with permission). SUBMISSIONS and questions may be emailed to feministcscw-l(a)cornell.edu <mailto:feministcscw-l@cornell.edu> Important Dates Submissions due: Nov 21 5pm EDT Acceptances announced: Dec 15, 2014 Workshop date: March 15, 2015 Thank you! Syracuse University's ISchool welcomes applications for our PhD program
by Jennifer Stromer-Galley 05 Nov '14

05 Nov '14

Syracuse University's School of Information Studies welcomes applicants for our doctoral program. Admitted students are assured of at least four year's funding (including summers) along with tuition and other support. The interdisciplinary nature of our program is visible through the backgrounds of the 40 students currently pursuing their Ph.D. Students hail from ten countries and a range of academic backgrounds: communications and other social sciences, business, computer science, library science, information science, and others. This makes our doctoral program a welcoming and inclusive place for scholars from under-represented populations, something we see as a defining element of our program. Doctoral students pursue individualized course plans that are tuned to their particular research interests and needs. This means advising and, more importantly, close working relationships with faculty members is a cornerstone of the Syracuse University iSchool Ph.D. program. This is why it is both residential and full-time. We celebrate the success of our recent graduates who are taking up tenure-track positions in premier research institutions and exceptional liberal arts colleges, excelling in academic and policy think tanks, and pursuing entrepreneurial success! Current students are earning awards for their publications and dissertation work, continuing a long tradition of such recognition. For 2015, we are particularly interested in speaking with applicants and seeing applications from those whose interests align with one or more of the following research areas: Text and data mining, Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval | Data science and data analytics | Information policy, Internet governance, and telecommunications policy | Information technology policy and globalization | Mobile computing | Librarianship | Usability, accessibility, and universal design | Data infrastructure and services in support of research Organizational impacts of ICTs (e.g., Citizen Science, FLOSS, Wikipedia, mobile work, distributed scientific collaboration, health IT) | Digitally-enabled research methods (e.g., Trace ethnography, socio-computational approaches) | Smart grids/energy informatics and Infrastructure studies | Information security and privacy (policies, management, and technologies) | Social Computing, social media, social networks, and crowdsourcing You can learn more about the Syracuse iSchool faculty and interests at http://ischool.syr.edu/future/doctoral/research_areas.aspx. You can learn more about the doctoral program and application (due 3 January, 2014) at http://ischool.syr.edu/future/doctoral/index.aspx.
